(A/N: This is the second fanfiction I'm working on. I'm still pretty new to this as I never intended on sharing any of the fics I wrote. So, depending on how well this goes, I'll continue it. With that being said, enjoy.)
Note: I don't own Apex Legends (Only this story of course)
Chapter 1: Voices
In a darkened room, there was a faint glow of light coming from under a door and behind that door was a connected bathroom. Inside of said bathroom was foggy due to the steam from the shower water running. A woman with fair skin and raven-black hair that reached down her back was showering trying to take her mind off voices that chattered in the back corners of her mind. Every now and again, she would get headaches and suffer pain in her left arm. The reason for this was because she was a part of horrific experiments that were conducted on her, against her will. Sometimes she would get visions from her forgotten past, along with glimpses of alternate realities. The remnants of these memories and flashes sometimes haunted her and made the headaches worse. They would get so bad that sleep was nearly impossible and the nights she was able to sleep, she would wake up in cold sweats.
Turning off the water, the woman let out a breath of relief through her nose as she opened her eyes. She opened the shower curtain, stepped out and walked over the mirror to which she then whipped off the condensation to reveal herself staring back. Her eyes were a piercing blue, however she had light bags under them that stood out if noticed. Her eyelashes seemed unnaturally long which annoyed her when they got in her eye and her eyebrows held a shaped yet natural curve to them. Her lips, although on the thinner side were full of color, but it seemed they were always fixated in a slight frown.
She glanced over all her features in the mirror. Her fingers traced over scars she had faint memories of getting or not remembering at all. She looked back up to her face in the mirror when all of a sudden a voice started to speak.
"Look at you." The voice spoke. At first the woman had a look of concern but it was quickly taken over with annoyance.
"What do you want? If you haven't noticed, I'm busy." she responded inwardly.
"Busy doing what, checking yourself out?" the voice teased.
The woman rolled her eyes as she stepped away from the mirror and picked up her towel to dry off. "I wasn't 'checking myself out' I was trying to remember where the scars are from."
"But your breasts don't have any scars and yet you seemed to look at them more than the scar-." The voice retorted but was cut off.
She scoffed "For fuck sake, what do you want? You never talk this much, and when you do, it's always bad."
The voice came across as somewhat laid back and chill as it spoke "Relax, I just wanted to talk. Besides, you're my other half in a way."
"Yeah? Well how about you tell me who or what you are 'other half'." The woman said with her voice clearly becoming upset.
"Well, I'm you, but at the same time I'm not you. You can think of me as a second consciousness. I can see other realities and different outcomes. That's how I'm able to help you in the Arena. I'm constantly on the lookout for danger, cause if you go, I go." the voice explained.
The woman sucked in a breath as she laid back on her bed and released it. "Alright, self preservation, can't be mad at that, but why haven't you told me this before? You had ample time to tell me while in between games."
"Well, you try having literally hundreds of possibilities coming at you at once. Seeing them all at once and trying to pick out the best outcome in just a few seconds, isn't easy." the voice tiredly said
The woman stretched across the bed, feeling the soft silk of the sheets brush against her bare skin, she exhaled at the feeling of comfort which came rarely."I see visions too. Maybe not that many, but still. So, what makes it different this time? Why are you choosing now to talk to me?" she questioned.
The voice took a second to respond "Those are the ones I let you see. And as for why I'm talking this much now, is, well; Being in a calm environment like this brings fewer visions."
"I see. Well, since you're here to chat, let's chat. We have a LOT to talk about" the woman said in an almost sinister tone.
=X=
The woman quickly sat up gasping for air. She had woken up in a cold sweat as she leaned forward and rested her head on her palms and gave her eyelids a few rubs as she settled her breathing. The light that crept in through her curtains of her room illuminated the room and gave off a hazy like scene. After a few moments she rose out of bed and stretched a few times before heading over to her closet for some underwear on. She slept naked because she felt smothered when sleeping in clothing. After getting dressed in a bra, panties and a white shirt she stepped into her bathroom. She stepped in front of the mirror and gave herself a look over. Her hair was a mess and she had a few beads of sweat on her forehead. She reached for a hairbrush that sat on the counter and began to brush her hair. After brushing her hair she styled it up into a bun and then proceeded to brush her teeth, but as she was brushing her teeth the voice started to speak.
"Well, good morning, how'd you sleep?" the voice asked.
"You should know." the woman responded crankily.
The voice sounded sympathetic when it responded "Yeah… I guess you're right."
"So, why are you back? Want to chat more or is this just a brief meeting?" the woman questioned as one of her brows raised.
"All those questions didn't satisfy you?" the voice responded
"Nope, but I got the major ones out of the way. It's good to know that my name is actually my name, for all we know it could have just been a name they chose, glad I could actually go by something other than 'Wraith' or the 'Interdimensional skirmisher' bullshit." the woman said in a slightly annoyed tone. "Speaking of knowing my name; you never told me how you confirmed it was mine." the woman asked as she spit into the sink.
"Well, I can't really confirm it per-say, when we saw our files in that lab, the other files from the other realities also read more or less the same thing, but again, can't confirm or disprove any of it." the voice explained.
"So, what are you exactly, like, do you have a body, are you sentient or am I going crazy?" the woman said while reaching for some dental floss.
The voice was struggling to find the right words to say but was seemingly having a hard time. "Well, technically both of those things. And believe me, you're not crazy. Well, maybe a little cold but…" The voice paused for a second, sensing the anger brewing in the woman. "Anyways. me and you share a body except I'm not really connected to it, I'm not in control, I don't experience pain. I can see and hear all the things you do as well as having my own sense of sight. I can feel your emotions and my sensory experience is tied to yours although to a lesser degree." the voice explained
"Interesting…" the woman replied
"And as far as the sentient thing goes, that's a 'kinda' thing. We're pretty much one in the same. I'm like a subconscious. You know when you enter into a portal and you see all the different splits and outcomes? Those are a few different realities that are similar to us and all of them have their own life and will experience stuff we may or may not ever get too. It's also the reason why I don't talk to you when you enter it, because, again, we're one in the same. It's complicated, I don't even understand it full, just know I'm watching your back, well, our back. Also, all of the other voices you hear are like me. You can hear them talk, but they're muffled into whispers. I can't control how loud or quiet they are, sorry." the voice finished
"It's fine...This whole thing is bizarre, but I guess it makes more sense than half the shit I've seen so far." the woman said as rinsed her mouth out with mouthwash. After she whipped her face clean with a soaked washcloth then turned towards the door. "Well, it's time we get ready."
Stepping back into her room, she walked over to her closet again and looked through it pulling out a pair of pants and a jacket. After assembling her outfit she stepped over to a full length mirror and checked herself out. The white shirt she was wearing was now tucked into high waisted black jeans, she had a cropped black leather jacket on and black running shoes. She also put in tiny skull earrings and wore a golden necklace.
"Ooo, looking good." the voice commented.
"That we do." she responded with a small smile creeping along her face. "Well, let's go get some fresh air." she said finished aloud as she turned and walked towards her bedroom door.
"So, where 'we headed?" the voice asked
"First: food, then to the park. I think the clear space and fresh air will help clear my mind before the game tomorrow. Then we'll head over to the Paradise Lounge." she stated
"Why the Paradise Lounge?" the voice questioned
"To get a drink." she answered
"Right, but don't you hate drinking?" the voice replied.
"Yeah, but one drink wouldn't hurt." She said while locking the door to her apartment and putting her keys in her pocket. She turned to face down the hall and was met by her neighbors: A brunette named Jacklyn and a ginger named Makayla. "Oh no…" she tiredly thought.
They're roommates and are extremely nosey girls who moved in next door a few months back, and they're exactly what you'd expect from two giddy college girls. Way too excited, girly and very intrusive. Or at least that's how they treated Wraith as they were very keen on befriending the woman.
"Oi, Wraith!" Makayla, greeted.
"For fuck sake, why this…?" Wraith inwardly questioned as she forced a smile.
"Play nice." The voice teased.
"Damn, what's got you all dressed up?" Jacklyn asked in a playful manner as her and Makayla approached
"This is how I normally dress. And I'm going out for a bit." Wraith responded
"Oh? Where too?" Jacklyn asked.
Wraith sighed a bit before responding "Oh you know, to the park, I need some space, so I'll be going now." she answered, but just before she started to move:
"Really? Hmph, you look awfully good to be going to just 'the park'. You even got earrings in, which you never wear. Are you sure you're not meeting up with someone? A boyfriend perhaps?" Jacklyn asked in a teasing manner.
"What? No, no… I-" Wraith was starting to explain but was cut off by Makayla who gasped
"Don't tell me you got a boyfriend and didn't tell us! Who is he? What's he like?" Makayla said with excitement.
"I bet he's the romantic type. Wraith seems like the type of girl who'd like to be woo'd." Jacklyn teased.
"And this isn't happening." Wraith said inwardly.
Wraith lightly bit her lip while inhaling through her nose before she responded. "Ok, look; I'm not meeting with anyone." Wraith said with a bit of sternness "I'm just going to mind my own business, like you two should be doing. Stop worrying about my relationship status, cause I'm not seeing anyone. Goodbye." she added and before they could respond, Wraith disappeared and then reappeared behind them and was walking away while leaving the two girls in slight shock.
"You know, no matter how many times she does that, it's still super cool," Makayla stated.
"Agreed… And she's definitely lying." Jacklyn stated.
"How can you tell?" Makayla questioned.
"That's a secret I cannot tell, you'll have to figure it out on your own, and it's fairly obvious." Jacklyn answered.
"Oh cmon! That's not fair, just tell me." Makayla cried out as the two walked back to their apartment.
"Tell you what; If you get close to guessing, I'll tell you." Jacklyn said to which Makayla let out an exaggerated sigh.

(A/N: All of the chapters are named after a song I like. The artist(s) and song will be named at the end of every chapter, if interested. I thought it'd be fun to do so instead of saying Cpt.1,2,3 etc;. This is the theme all of my other fanfics have which I only have 2 of at the moment. Also, if this isn't lore accurate, it's because I haven't indulged in the cannon enough or because I wanted to change it to fit my criteria.)
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this and the rest.
Song Name: Voices By Randy Orton Ft. Revy Theory.
