Note: this takes place not in the same universe as Toon Platoon :)
I can't do this.
10 days.
It had been about a week and a half since Roger had looked himself in the mirror and was finally able to admit it to himself.
"I'm going to marry her."
36 months.
It had been 3 years since they started dating, yet they had been close friends for a lot longer than that. Before the sparks had even flown, everyone had assumed that they were already married since every time they'd hung out they would always end up at the same place and would always sit together. They had gained a sense of comfort because everyone and their mother knew each other and knew who they were.
But they don't really know us. We were only 18 when we started going, being married at that age is a bit much. But he would never say it out loud, or was quick to say, "if other people want to, that's fine." it was just too soon for him.
He sat on his bed, twirling the ring in his hands that had taken him 3 months of paychecks to save up for.
We became friends at 11…...started dating at 18…..and now getting married at 21. Is it too soon….?
"Honey bunny! Are you home?~" Jessica chimed in from downstairs.
welp. too late to back out now.
"Yes, dearest!" He answered back as he scrambled to find a place to hide the ring. Finally, after lots of banging and shuffling, he decided on a small pot that used to hold a succulent that was given to him by Betty as a graduation gift. Somehow it had managed to wilt and die because they both had neglected it, but kept the pot because Jessica felt bad for killing the plant and decided, "It's pretty!".
Struggling to shove the ring inside the pot, Roger knocks over the ceramic, completely destroyed as it hits the floor.
Awwww….
"Darling is everything alright? Do you need some help with something?" Jessica asked and he started to panic as he heard her footsteps come up the stairs.
"N-no! I'm fine!" His voice starts to falter as he realizes he can't find the ring "E-eVeRyThInG's FiNe!"
"What is all that banging?" He heard her ask as he was frantically running around looking for it.
Stupid giant clown feet.
"S-sorry! I was just in the shower and I accidentally knocked over the body wash!" He quickly lied.
"Alright," He did a huge sigh of relief.
Thank goodness.
"I just came home for a bit because I think I left my purse at home."
"Do you want me to bring it down for you?"
ITS NOT UP HERE. WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT, AND YOU'RE NOT WET, SHE'S GONNA CATCH YOU IN YOUR LIE.
Footsteps.
"I'll just come up and get it, then I can give you a goodbye kiss."
"You can do that when I come down though, can't you?"
Silence for a moment.
Shoot. She's on to me.
"Roger, why can't I just come upstairs? I'm perfectly capable, and I know exactly where it is!"
"I know, I jus-Hold on a second."
He rushes into the bathroom right next to the bed and removes all of his clothing, splashes himself with water, and wraps his torso and ears in towels. Finally, he opens the door. Jessica is standing right there.
"AHHH! Oh…hehe...hi." he laughs, trying to cover up his terror.
Why did I have to lie? Why didn't I want her up here again…? I can't remember!
"What is going on? Why wouldn't you let me come up here?" she was firm, but gentle.
The ring! Thats it! Where is the ring?! WHAT DO I DO?!
"No reason! I told ya I was just taking a shower, and I wanted to bring down your purse for you!"
"You mean this?" She holds up a small purple crossbody. "Why did you say it was up here?"
Uh oh. Play it off play it off…..
He walks back into the bathroom to grab his clothes and dress himself as calmly and collected as possible, and then over to the corner of the room where the closet is to pull out some random purse she never uses.
"I thought you meant this one." He says, smiling.
She walks over to him. "Honey, I use the exact same purse every single day. You should know that since you bought it for me for valentines day this year because you knew I loved it, and it was too expensive for me to buy at the time. I know somethings up, and now the pot is somehow broken. So what is the real reason why you wouldn't let me come up here. Just tell me the truth, I promise I won't be mad." She said, ending very sweetly.
"I…." He sighs. "I was trying to look for a place to hide..a ring."
"A ring?"
"Yeah, I didn't know you were coming home today, and so when I heard you open the door, I panicked. So I came up with this huge thing to keep you from coming upstairs so I could put it in a place you'd never look." Roger says.
"Is that why the pot is broken? You tried to put it in there?" She laughs.
He sort of smiles back.
"Yeah, I sort of scrambled to get it in there before you had the chance to come up here, but in the panic of it all, it fell over and broke." He explained.
She smiles, and moves towards him. "Soooo where is it?"
His ears immediately drop "I don't know."
"What do you mean?" she asks, concerned but not angry.
"I was so busy trying to answer you after the noise the pot made when it fell over, that I dropped the ring and I didn't see where it went. I looked everywhere.." he says, a frown appearing on his face.
"Well now you have me so we can look for it together." she smiles at him.
"Okay." he perks up a bit.
They immediately start looking for the ring together. Opening drawers, digging through the laundry basket, looking under the dresser, but with no luck. After about an hour of looking, Roger sits down on the bed, he doesn't want to give up but feels like he might have to at this point. Jessica is looking around for a bit more before she looks up at her fiance.
"If I didn't know any better I'd say that the universe is trying to tell us something." She laughs, hoping to lighten the mood, this just makes him feel worse.
It's okay, it's okay, it's gonna be okay.
"Are you okay?"
His eyes immediately well up.
Nononononnono.
"Honey.." She moves to sit next to him, and pulls him into a hug.
I can't do this.
"You can't do what?"
Did I say that out loud?
"I was so nervous about tonight and I just-I wanted everything to be perfect—" he lets out a sob "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lie!" he can barely talk as he bursts into tears, she just rubs his back.
"Shhhh….I understand darling, it'll be alright…I promise." her voice very soothing.
"I'm sorry…" he says, the softest she's ever heard him.
It took him a few minutes before he was finally able to calm down. She moved him away to wipe his eyes and bring his chin up to hers.
"You know I would marry you even if you didn't have a penny to your name, right?"
He smiles finally. "Yes."
"I don't care about some stupid ring, I love you for you and nothing is ever going to change that." She says. "But even so…" She holds out the ring to him, smiling.
He smiles, "The ring! Where did you find it?"
"It practically stabbed me when I sat down."
They both burst into laughter.
"So...would you like to do the honors?" she holds out her hand.
"Don't I have to ask first?"
"I think you already know the answer to that, just put it on." She giggles.
He smiles and places the ring on her finger. She looks up at him and kisses her new fiance, and then pulls him into another hug.
"I love you."
"I love you too"
I did it.
