Hey, guys. The Tokyo Olympics are officially over and I gotta say I had a blast watching the games but now I'm free to create more stories frequently. Speaking of stories, this edition of the Mancub's Den newsletter will focus on the behind the scenes of my new DC Superhero Girls fanfic called Primal Instinct though I may change the title to Primal Justice. It will explain everything of the story so everyone can get a glimpse to what it's all about. Let's get started.
======What's Elseworlds?======
Before I explain the story, let's talk about Elseworlds. For those who do not know what Elseworlds is, it's a special line of comics by DC. It's basically comics telling different stories in alternate realities not related to the main DC canon. For example, Superman from a different reality will be a villainous dictator from Superman: Red Sun or Batman in 19th century England solving the case of Jack the Ripper in Gotham by Gaslight. It's taking these characters of DC and repurposing them into different roles giving them fresh stories to tell. And that's what I'm doing to Primal Instinct with the same formula being an Elseworlds canon from my main canon of Captain Hurricane and the Superhero Girls. I hope I'd made a good explanation of Elseworlds. I suggest you Google DC Elseworlds for more information and feel free to check out a few comics being Justice League: Gods and Monsters, Superman: Red Sun, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight and Kingdom Come for they're pretty good. And now to explain about Beastars.
=====What is Beastars?======
Now this is the inspiration for my new fanfic that I want to explain to you all. Beastars is a manga series debuted in 2016 and ended in late 2020 created by Perrut Itagaki. Hope I spelled her name right so please forgive me for that. The anime adaptation happened in Japan in 2019 and was brought to Netflix in the West in 2020. The story takes place in a world of anthropomorphic animals where tension between carnivore and herbivore animals are at odds. To make things worse, an herbivore student died from being devoured on campus which made the teens feel uneasy towards their carnivore peers at their school and the Drama Club. The main protagonist is a gray wolf named Legoshi who takes it upon himself to solve the murder of his classmate while battling his natural instincts as he falls in love with a rabbit. It's kind of like Disney's Zootopia but verry realistic in how society operates. If you have Netflix, I recommend you check out Beastars. It's a great show and they just released Season 2 last month just to understand the story.
=======About Primal Instinct========
This Elseworlds story I've written is a similar premise from Beastars but with the alternate world of DC as the characters being animals. The story begins with Steve Trevor being devoured by a carnivore and it affects the class of Metropolis High. Diana now heartbroken of her potential love interest dead, must now figure out who killed Steve and get to the bottom of it. However, she'll have help from her friends while dealing with the prejudices placed onto them by herbivores and carnivores in school and in society as a whole. I already wrote the first chapter and it's uploaded yesterday. I obviously won't spoil it for everybody who didn't read it but I will say it would surely kick Off the story intensely with the main protagonist going through a torturous revelation. Now the upcoming chapters will see not Only the solving of Steve's murder but many other situations such as teen drama, criminal corruption and tension of the two cultures of animals. I'll probably upload the second episode some time this week to open up the world a Little inside the school life of the main protagonists. Speaking of which, I'll talk about the characters in the next section.
====The Characters=====
Since this story takes place in a world full of animals, I was thinking of an animal for each DCSG character to portray. Some were easy while some were difficult but in the end, I managed to get the job done. Here are the animals for my characters.
-Protagonists-
Diana Prince: Lioness- The main character of the story who is a top student willing to improve society for a peaceful coexistence for herbivores and carnivores. She's the best friend to Steve Trevor in which she's avenging his death.
Hunter Lawton: Gray Wolf- The deuteragonist of the story in which he was close friends to Steve since middle school. He was stunned at the news of the murder as his other friends. Just like Diana, he wants to find the truth and reason behind the devouring and make the one pay for their crime. He's the and the Superhero Girls. Oh and one freebie, he's a thing for other girl species. Just read the first chapter and you'll see.
Karen Beecher: Sloth Bear- One of Diana and Hunter's friends who is into science and tech but is very shy. She's not as close to Steve as the other two protagonists but is good friends with Steve. Speaking of him.
Steve Trevor: Horse- The friend and student at Metropolis High who was devoured that fateful night and was Diana's best friend and love interest. Though he obviously won't appear in the present, he will appear in flashbacks to look at his life with Diana, Hunter and the gang.
Kara Danvers: Siberian Tigress- A tigress who is hotheaded but speaks her mind and tells it like It is. She's close friends with Diana and the other girls.
Barbara Gordon: Meerkat- A funny wisecracking wiz girl who loves nothing more than working at the Burrito Bucket. That reminds me, in this story, meat is prohibited for that's murder. Though fish, eggs and bugs are legal. Babs is a stage hand at the Drama Club led by Zee and Ollie.
Jessica Cruz: Jaguar- A vegan activist who is all about a healthy lifestyle and the member of the agricultural club headed by Pamela Isley. She's close friends to the Elseworld's version of the Superhero Girls.
Zee Zatara: Fox- A fashion expert and the co-leader of the Drama Club who sometimes goes at odds with Oliver Queen.
Hal Jordan: Coyote- The football star at Metropolis High and one of Hunter and Steve's close friends. He's also close to Jessica Cruz though he's iffy about Carol Ferris.
Oliver "Ollie" Queen: White-Tailed Deer- The Thespian afficionado and co-leader of the Drama Club. He and Zee are frenemies but maybe leading to something more. You'll have to find out as the story goes on.
Garth: Seal- A nerd who is also close friends to Steve and the boys. He's sometimes the victim to Doris's bullying.
Barry Allen: Roadrunner- Close friend to Steve as well as the server at Sweet Justice.
Garfield "Gar" Logan: Spider Monkey- The class clown and a wisecrack of the boys. Ollie goes at odds with him in a comical sense.
Carter Hall: Hawk- He's a strong yet silent type of the boys but he' bonded with Steve since middle school just like the others.
Doris Marie Zuel: Kodiak Brown Bear- A reckless and hot-tempered girl just like Kara but she proves to everyone how ruthless she can be. She's usually the rival to Karen Beecher but it may escalate when a love triangle ensues but it would have something to do with a certain deuteragonist.
Pamela Isley: Gray Wolf- The head of the Agricultural Club and hates how plants are treated and eaten. She's pretty much yearns for meat but can never attain It. Furthermore, she's kind of annoyed with Jessica's vegan stance and wants her to act like the carnivore she really Is.
Harleen "Harley" Quinzel: Spotted Hyena- The wisecracking girl of the Supervillain Girls who is best friends with Pam. She'll play a role of the upcoming Black Market episode when I get to it.
Selina Kyle: Black Panther- She's the brains of the Supervillain Girls though In this Elseworlds story, she's the leader and not Pam. She's into the finer things in Life due to her upbringing by her wealthy family.
Leslie Willis: Falcon- The best friend to the Kodiak girl Doris Zuel and a talented DJ. She's a fan of rock and roll and sometimes gets on her Supervillain friends' nerves with her antics.
Carol Ferris: Maned Wolf- A cheerleader at Metropolis High who has the hots for Hal Jordan though one-sided on her part. She's jealous and very territorial when Jessica is around the coyote. Though Carol's not my favorite female antagonist, I'll give her some attention. That honor goes to Giganta overall in the DC Universe.
Barbara Ann "Barbie" Minerva: Cheetah (Do I have to ask why?)- The spoiled rich girl and a member of the gymnastics team of Metropolis High though Diana is the leader of the group. She's close friends to Carol Ferris and good friends to the Supervillain Girls.
Coriander "cory": Pheasant- A cheerful girl who is a stage hand of the Drama Club. She's best friends with Rachael Roth who are both empaths.
Rachael "Rae" Roth: Rabbit- An empath who is the serious yet down to earth one of the duo. She tries and Learns to be compassionate towards both carnivores and herbivores.
I won't share the main antagonist of this story for it would kill the mystery of Steve Trevor's murder. But that's the animals I have for each of the characters without giving much of their mystique away. But I have a feeling that some of you may become furries after reading Primal Instinct. Though I'm kind of a furry shame in the game.
Now a Maned Wolf is not exactly a wolf but a type of fox from the Amazon in south America.
=====The Tone=====
This story is obviously a crime drama with a shonen-style twist. It's going to touch certain real life elements such as prejudice and tension in society. Zootopia touched on it where stereotypes and discrimination can happen but Beastars took a realist approach of the issue. Primal Instinct will take the latter's tone for the plot and another issue is their natural born instincts kept under control. I'll try not to reveal too much of my fic but in Zootopia and Beastars, both had animals turned rogue and primal but in different ways.
Zootopia had a drug called Night Howlers that made a carnivorous or in some cases, an herbivorous animal turn savage. So as long as the person doesn't take the drug, they won't go into their primal rage. Beastars however is not the case. The animals in the anime has them with primal instincts right from the start but the carnivores have It worse for they need to keep It under control for their sake In society. And that's how I'm going to have the DCSG characters be like in this story being born with their natural instincts. Carnivores like Diana, Hunter, Hal, Kara and Doris will have It the roughest for it will have them keep their predatory instincts and their teen angst in check especially when the tension builds up in Metropolis High.
Also, the criminal activity will happen but I won't give it away but it will play an important role in the fic. So be patient while I'm at work on it.
=====Conclusion======
That's all I have for the behind the scenes today. But I hope I've made a lot of things clear without ruining the anticipations of the fic. Did I mention just then that I'm sort of a furry? XD! Anyway, I rambled too much there but at least I'd knocked that out of the way. Feel free to PM or leave a review for any suggestions or constructive feedback of Primal Instinct. I'm currently thinking of how my second chappy should go. Anyway, LilMancub out and I'll see y'all in the next one.
