There were many ways that Neji had imagined getting married. This was not one of them.
So he did the only thing he could do in this situation, both for catharsis and because it was in the mission description. He grabbed the sake bottle on the table and threw it out of the window. And the other sake bottle on the other table. And another. And another. When he had finally cleared the party hall of thirty bottles of sake, he leaned against the fancy floral-patterned wallpaper and sighed.
He hated missions like this. He had begged, requested, pleaded with Tsunade-sama not to send him on missions like this. Especially on this day, of all days. What was he supposed to do?
Then Tenten walked into the room. She glanced at all the tables, devoid of any sake, and then she too leaned against the wall and sighed.
"Thank God. You got rid of the sake before Lee got here. Why, Neji, why? Why were we assigned this mission?" she moaned.
"Because Tsunade-sama said so." Neji's lips curled upwards in distaste, a rare sight given how much respect he usually accorded to the Godaime. "And you know the thirty-second rule of the shinobi code of conduct. The mission always comes first. Even if it's your wedding day."
"Yeah, yeah, I get that," Tenten muttered, scowling and impaling the floral-patterned wallpaper with a shuriken (the owner of the building would have wept). "But why do we have to infiltrate someone else's wedding on our own wedding day? I begged Tsunade-sama for the cat-catching mission and the evil tycoon assassination mission."
"The same reason I'm impersonating the bride and you the groom," Neji said with as much venom as he could muster. "Because Tsunade-sama won the lottery, thought it was bad luck on our wedding day, and sent us off here to get married outside of Konoha where no supernatural events could transpire."
"Don't forget the sake."
"I threw it out already."
"No, I mean – "
"NEJI, TENTEN! Are you ready for the mission? Look, Guy-sensei and I managed to pack your wedding clothes into your storage scroll, Tenten!"
Neji took a thirty-first sake bottle from his pocket and threw it out of the window.
There were many ways that Neji had imagined getting married. This was not one of them.
