"Does someone wanna explain to me why the hell my million dollar building is out of power?" Tony asked Natasha, Daisy, Karley and Lyla as everyone was gathered in the meeting room, sitting around the table in the dark. A few candles had been lit until Fitz and Mack could get the generators running.
Strange had taken off in a portal after Karley woke up, saying something about having a lead. Where he got his lead was beyond her, but that was the least of her concerns as she held the icepack to her head, feeling guilty about what happened to the tower.
"I did say you break it you buy it little Johnson," Tony continued, walking around the table. "I'm just kidding, obviously. Did it at least work?" He asked Karley, who numbly nodded her head.
And it had worked. She had all of her memories back, the good and the bad. She was herself again, as long as she didn't get injected with that red stuff and read the magic words from Mrs. Frederics book.
As much as the process of getting her memories back hurt, it was worth it. Her head was no longer empty, but rather filled with how she was raised, who she was.
"What's todays date?" She asked instead, realizing that she had a meeting with Bucky planned still. Well, she would have to ask the barista.
"It's the 18th of July," Simmons said, still inspecting Daisy and Lyla to make sure the electrical shocks they had taken didn't cause too much damage.
Glancing at the clock on the wall Karley saw it was one in the morning. She'd have to wait to go to the café.
"Why do you ask?" Steve questioned, seeing the gears turning in the girls head.
"Because Steve," Karley said, dropping her icepack on the table and walking towards him. "I have a meeting I missed with a mutual friend of ours."
"Care to fill the rest of us in?" Asked May, eyeing the two of them carefully.
Karley could tell that Steve knew exactly who she referring to, as he uncrossed his arms, his brows furrowing in thought.
"Where is he?" He asked impatiently. Steve had been looking for his friend for months after the Civil War happened, only coming back to Avengers Tower when his efforts were futile, hoping he could use the resources here to track down Bucky. Though Stark wasn't proud of what happened between him and his once friend, he was starting to come around a bit because of the situation. Things have been tense between the two since Cap came back, but those worries were set to the side quickly when the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents showed up on their doorstep.
"I don't know," Karley answered honestly. "I know how to get into contact with him, though I doubt he will come if he sees I have company."
"You know where Bucky is?" Tony asked, his interest in the conversation spiking. He didn't want to kill the Winter Soldier anymore, but he certainly was never going to be friends with the man. Especially after seeing first hand the side affects that Hydra had forced upon him in Karley.
"I was supposed to meet him yesterday, but he left a messenger behind for me just in case."
Daisy, who had been quiet through this whole conversation sat up. "You can't go alone, not with the Red Dawn still after you. I'm coming with you to this meeting."
"I don't think Bucky will show up if I have someone with me Daisy, especially an unfamiliar face to him. He was expecting me, and me alone. I don't want him to run, and he said he had answers for me."
"Well you going alone is out of the question kid," Coulson stated, setting his foot down on the idea. "But you're also right. If he spooks easy and he's only expecting you, then you can be the only one to go but you'll have a back up team trailing you." Karley nodded her head at that, fine with the idea.
"Why hasn't the obvious question been asked?" Tony spoke up again. "Why was Bucky inside of the Red Dawn to begin with?"
"I think he was there for me," Karley said. "I know it sounds weird, but I think he was trying to break me out. If he's still in New York waiting for me to meet up with him at that café, Red Dawn could also be after him. I told them about him after he left, I never had intentions of meeting up with him. I was still loyal to Red Dawn when he told me of his plans."
"Then we'll go to the meeting site first thing in the morning when the café opens," Natasha said. "We'll send Karley in like Coulson said, with a team trailing her of course," she added on immediately, knowing that Daisy wasn't gonna let her sister go alone. "Karley gets the meeting site, meets up with Bucky, and they talk. If Red Dawn is there then at least we'll have a lead."
Everyone agreed on the plan before heading for their rooms. They had a long day ahead of them.
As Daisy and Natasha headed for the elevator, the brunette noticed her sister heading for the stairs.
"I'll catch up to you in a minute," she said to the redhead, watching as her sister was going up. "I'm gonna go check on her." She nodded her head to her sister who had disappeared from her sight.
"Okay, I'll be waiting for you," Nat said, gently letting go of Daisy's hand before leaning up for a quick kiss.
Daisy was smiling like a fool as she started up the stairs, watching as the elevator closed on the redhead. Skipping the stairs three at a time, she headed for the roof, which wasn't too many flights as they lived on the top floors anyways.
Opening the door, she quickly found her sister sitting on the edge of the roof, feet dangling like they had been earlier that morning.
"Hey," Daisy greeted, sitting down next to her little sister.
"Hey," she said back, her eyes on the stars that were barely visible through the clouds. "You were in my mind earlier?"
"Yea, not for all of it, I only saw from about a year back or so."
"So you saw..?" Karley trailed off, her voice breaking a little. Daisy nodded, not sure if her sister saw.
"Yea, I'm sorry you had to go through all of that. I wish I had been if your life sooner. Trust me, if I was I would've torn the middle east up until I found you."
Karley let out a small chuckle at the thought of that. The all mighty Quake tearing through the middle east to find her.
"The Taliban would've pissed their pants if they saw you. They didn't like females very much, let alone super powered ones with their face plastered on the news."
"Yea," Daisy smiled, both of them returning their gaze back upon the stars.
"'The darkest nights produce the brightest stars.' My mother used to tell me that all the time. Did you know, in Afghanistan you could see the stars perfectly at night? There was no pollution, no smoke, nothing hiding them away. Me and my team would sometimes sleep outside the tents just so we could watch the stars. It's one of the memories I've missed the most."
"I watched your time with them. They seemed like amazing people," Daisy said hesitantly, not wanting to cross a boundary.
"They were under my care, Daisy. It's my fault that they're dead. Then I come back home and I killed another dozen innocent people. I have so much blood on my hands," a few tears made their way down her face, the full revelation of all her past memories coming to the surface. On one hand, she was glad to have her memories back, but on the other, she wished they were gone again so she didn't have to deal with the pain that came with them.
Daisy scooted closer to her sister and enveloped her in a hug, the taller sibling now crying into her shoulder. As they sat there, holding each other, Daisy's heart broke for her sister. She was only 24 and had seen just as much as she had.
"It'll be alright. You have me now Karley. I just want you to know that whatever happens, I'll always be here for you. I'm not going anywhere. Not ever. Wherever you go, I go? Got it?" Karley nodded her head into Daisy's shoulder.
"Thank you. For finding me, and freeing me from that place. Also, I'm sorry for punching you in the astral plane."
Daisy full on laughed at the last part, and she couldn't stop, which led to Karley giving her a curious look, before laughing with her. As they sat there on the roof laughing, the stars above them, neither of them noticed that someone a few miles away was watching them through the scope of their rifle.
"That punch really hurt you know!" Daisy said, struggling to get it out through her giggles, which in turn caused Karley to laugh even harder. "Imagine my surprise, finding my long lost sister, and instead of a hug, or even a warm welcoming, I get a strong right hook to my face."
"We'll have to spar something. I'll put you in your place, sis," Karley said, the unfamiliar word slipping out of her mouth before she realized what she said. Daisy raised her eyebrows, shooting her a look before gently punching her on her shoulder.
"You can try, sis, but you better be ready for an ass whooping. Shouldn't you be going to bed? It's definitely past your bedtime."
"Before we go to bed, I wanna show you something cool I learned," Karley said, standing up and walking to the middle of the roof, Daisy right beside her, curious. "Watch this."
Daisy watched as Karley slowly began to weave her hands together, a familiar blue energy surrounding her. As the energy formed, it almost dripped off of her sister, who began moving it around in circles, adding more energy to the mix. A minute or so later, the two sisters were surrounded by hundreds of tiny wisps of energy, which slowly circled the two. It was beautiful, and Daisy stared in awe at the scene. Suddenly her feet shifted from beneath her, and as she glanced down, she could see that the blue energy had wrapped itself around her legs and she began to float off of the ground a few feet.
"Karley, when did you learn to do this? It's beautiful," Daisy voiced her thoughts as the two of them floated through the wisps.
"Let's just say, these were my bright stars in my darkest nights." As they floated there, they didn't even notice as the hours flew by, just talking to the other, getting to know each other after so many years.
The next day found the Avengers and Agents set up around the coffee shop, which was located in the mall. Coulson had sent Mack, Yo-Yo, Flint and Tess back to one of their secure S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities to make sure things kept running. Not to mention they had their own resources at S.H.I.E.L.D. and hopefully they could find something on the Red Dawn that the Avengers couldn't.
Natasha and Daisy were shopping in an Old Navy that was across from the Café, the latter refusing to be too far away from her sister. Karley, for her part, hadn't ever been a spy, not like this at least. She wasn't used to blending into crowds, she was used to using nature to sneak behind enemy lines, never engaging unless she had to to gather information.
So as she walked into the coffee shop, scanning the tables for Bucky, she wasn't surprised that she didn't see him. Making her way to the counter, she waited in line before she could finally order.
"Hi! How can I help you today ma'am?" The cashier asked her.
"Just a water please," she asked, shooting her a smile as she walked to the pick up area.
"Just a water? Really?" Daisy asked her sister through the comms.
"What? I don't drink coffee," she replied, as a different woman came to give Karley her coffee. "Thanks, hey are you the barista here?"
"Yea! My names Kate, is there something else I can help you with?" The barista asked.
"Actually yea, my friend Bucky told me about this coffee shop."
"Oh Bucky! You're his friend?" Karley nodded her head. "Well he came by yesterday waiting for you, but he left and gave me this." The girl reached into her apron and pulled out a note. "He left this for you, but don't worry, I didn't read it in case it was a love letter."
Karley internally cringed at that, taking the note and leaving the girl a tip.
"You get the package little Johnson?" Starks voice came through.
"Yea, I got the location, sending it now," she sent the address before making her way to the car Stark lent her. "Meet you there."
The location Bucky left her was a few miles away, so it took a minute to drive through the afternoon traffic. When she finally arrived, she slowly made her way to the house, circling around the the back door. It was locked but she quickly pulled out a bobby pin from her hair and got to work.
As she stepped into the house she could see that it was empty, not that she was expecting anything else. She didn't have a gun on her, but she knew she didn't need one.
"Bucky?" She called out quietly. When she didn't get an answer she made her way to the stairs.
"Be careful in there Karley," Natasha's voice said through the ear piece at the exact moment someone tackled into her, sending the small device flying out of her ear and across the floor.
Acting on instinct, still not used to having powers, she put her hands on her attackers chest and sent and wave of energy into him, effectively sending the man flying through the window and into the yard. Just as she stood up, two more men jumped out and started throwing punches.
Karley hadn't astral projected herself to gather more energy recently, and she used most of it last night showing Daisy what she could do. So as she went to blast the other two, nothing but little waves came out of her hands uselessly. So she engaged in hand to hand, which wasn't something new to her thankfully as her training kicked in.
She flipped one man over her hip and into the coffee table, turning to face the second one as searing hot pain exploded in her temple. Taking the punch, she fought back as a few more ran out from another room, grabbing her arms.
"Let me go!" She screamed, elbowing one of them in the gut as she continued struggling. One of the new arrivals punched her in the cheek, her head snapping to the side as one of the men approached with a syringe. A syringe filled with a very familiar red substance.
"It's time to come back Surge, we still have big plans for you," he said, walking up to her, roughly grabbing her elbow. Just when she thought it was over, a certain redhead kicked the door in, and Daisy walked in, sending a shock wave into the man with the needle.
Utilizing the distraction, Karley elbowed the same man she did earlier, as he let go of her, turning to send a kick into the other, as he went flying towards Natasha, who made quick work of him. Taking a deep breath, Karley focused on projecting her body into the astral plane. As she did so, her blue shield erupted around her in a five foot radius, sending the man she elbowed flying through the wall.
With the time slowed, she made quick work of stealing the remaining energy from the nearby objects and enemies, doing a quick sweep of the house to make sure it was empty. It was, with no signs of Bucky.
It was different this time, in the astral plane. Instead of being an enemy of Daisy and Natasha, she slowly passed by them in slow motion, laughing at the face Daisy was making as she slowly moved to punch the last man standing, not knowing that Karley had already taken the energy from him. As she made her way back to her body, she prepared for the vertigo she was getting accustomed to feeling.
Snapping back into reality, the blue forcefield around her retracted back into her body.
"They won't be getting back up any time soon, don't worry," she told the two woman. Nat tilted her head and shrugged, thankful the fight was over quickly.
"Are you hurt?" Daisy asked in a heartbeat, moving around the bodies on the floor to make her way to her sister, gently grabbing her cheek and turning her face to look at the small cut that was left there. "You don't need stitches." She determined quickly.
"Jeez, thanks mom," Karley said, before bending over to grab the syringe that lay untouched on the ground. Natasha snorted at the remark, only stopping when Daisy shot her a look.
"Think that's funny Romanoff?" Daisy asked playfully, as the two of them collected the guns on the ground. Stark and Steve walked in at that moment, taking in the scene before them.
"Damn ladies, talk about a dream team," came Starks robotic voice from his suit, which he promptly stepped out of as it hovered in the air. "Is that the stuff they'd use on you little Johnson?" He asked, gesturing to the syringe in her hand. She nodded before handing it to him.
"They said it was time for me to come back, that they still had plans for me. I also checked the house, Bucky isn't here," she said the last part to Steve, who slumped in frustration.
"We'll find him Rogers, don't worry," Natasha said, putting a hand on her friends shoulder. He patted it before heading for the stairs.
"I'm gonna check the house for any clues he might've left behind. You don't think that the Red Dawn got to him, do you?" He asked no one in particular.
"They might've. I'm so sorry Steve, I told them about him," Karley apologized, hanging her head down as she realized that Red Dawn probably did have Bucky, and it was her fault. He was just trying to help her.
"It's not your fault Karley, it's Red Dawns. Keep you head up kid," he said, tilting her chin up. She just nodded, his words going in one ear and out the other.
"Okay team, let's do a quick sweep of the house, then head back to base. The police are already on their way to collect these ones," Tony instructed, gently kicking one of the Red Dawn agents hands before putting his sunglasses on. Karley was confused for a second as to why he would need them on in the dark house, before she realized that they were doing a scan.
"Hey kid," Natasha approached her, watching as the rest of the team started their search of the house before the police showed up. "How you doing?"
"I'm fine, just upset that Bucky isn't here. Thanks for the save by the way," she said, nudging the redhead with her shoulder.
"Of course Karley. You're part of this team now," she replied. "If you ever wanna talk, I've been told I'm a great listener. My doors always open."
"Thanks for the offer Natasha."
"You can call me Nat," she said, giving the younger girl a smile as they both walked off to help with the search.
Their search came up empty. The only information that they got was in the red syringe they secured, which was rushed off to Bruce's lab quickly for testing. After the mission, Karley silently made her way back to the cell that she had set up in. She'd been sitting there for about an hour, trying to recall anything from her memories when a ginger walked in, wearing a white dress and heels. She instantly recognized Pepper, seeing her a few times around the tower in the past couple days.
"Hey Karley, I'm Pepper," she greeted, walking into the cell and sitting down on the bed. "I came down here to tell you that Tony and I set you up with a new credit card so you can go get some clothes, a phone, whatever you need really. Don't worry about the price either, Tony doesn't mind."
She handed Karley the card, which she hesitantly took.
"Thank you Pepper, I really appreciate it. I won't buy much, just a few necessities."
"Oh honey, you and I are going shopping, and Tony said he wouldn't let us back in here unless you spend some money. It'll be fun, and nice to get out of the Tower for a bit, come on! Natasha, Lyla and your sister are in the car waiting for us."
Karley groaned, hating the idea of shopping as Pepper dragged her out of the cell and down to the car. This was going to be a long night.
She was right, it had been a long night as the girls made their way back to the tower, with a man named Happy driving them.
"You just had to pick out all of the black outfits?" Pepper asked, looking through their bags of clothes they got. "Your girlfriend has a sense of style at least."
Whereas Karley picked out leather jackets, jeans, and boots, Lyla had gotten the dresses, rompers, heels and other stuff.
"Hey leave the kid alone, she has great taste in clothes," Natasha said from across them, admiring one of Karley's favorite leather jackets she picked out. "I might have to steal this from you."
"Only if I can steal your vest here and there," Karley bargained, making the redhead smile before sticking out a hand.
"Deal."
"You two have no taste in clothes," Daisy said, going through her own bags as she pulled out the stylish clothes she picked out for herself.
"I went ahead and got you some colorful clothes anyways Karley, I'm sure they'll just sit in your closet, but just in case you're feeling daring at least you have them," Pepper stated, pulling a tie-dyed shirt. "Isn't it cute?" Karley just nodded her head, at a loss for words at the sight of the shirt.
"Oh she'll never wear that, unless she forgets to do her laundry again," Lyla snorted, grabbing the shirt from Pepper. "But I'll definitely wear it."
"So Karley, tell us about your time in the Marines?" Pepper asked. Out of all the branches of the military, she held a special spot in her heart for the Marine Corp as they were the ones who had rescued Tony when he was kidnapped.
"Oh, um, what do you wanna know?" She asked, shifting a bit in her seat as the attention turned to her.
"Oh I don't know, anything. Why did you join?" The ginger asked, taking a sip of her water.
"For the free college," Karley joked. "No, I joined because my best friend from home did too. We joined together, and then got deployed together. He was always the patriotic one, I just wanted to see the world and keep my best friend close. In the end, I uh, only got one of those wishes." She cleared her throat as she felt a hand slip into her own, knowing it to be Lyla's. No one else's hands were as smooth as the blonds, who kept them clean and perfect at all time because of her profession.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up bad memories," Pepper apologized frantically. "What was his name?"
"It's okay Pepper, I'm just glad to have my memories back, my memories of my time with him. His name was Marcus Chyna," she told them, rubbing her arm where his name was tattooed, a permanent reminder.
"Oh he was an asshole," Lyla continued the story with a smile. "Just like his brother, Theo. You remember him?" She asked her girlfriend, rubbing soothing circles on her hand.
"How could I forget, the kid broke my arm in first grade," she laughed at the memory. "But Marcus ran over to me and made sure I was okay. It was the beginning of our friendship built on mutual dislike of his brother."
As the girls sat there bonding on the drive back to the Tower, Happy driving carefully through the streets, none of them even saw the truck coming at them before colliding viscously, sending the limousine tumbling once, twice, three times before hitting the side of a building, landing upside down. Thankfully it was pretty late at night, the streets mostly empty.
Groaning in pain, Daisy unbuckled her seatbelt before falling onto the roof of the car. Her ears were ringing and thick, hot blood trickled out of her ear. Everything was disorienting.
She looked up to see the rest of the girls dangling, thankful that everyone was wearing their seatbelts as well. Natasha was the second one to unbuckle her seatbelt, dropping down next to the Inhuman, glass cutting into her hands as she did so.
"What the hell," Pepper said, groaning as she struggled to undo her restraint as well. As hard as she tried, it wasn't coming undone. "I'm stuck!"
Natasha pulled a gun out of her holster, never travelling without it, before glancing out the widow. She knew that this was some unfortunate collision.
"Daisy get the others undone," the redhead directed, seeing that she was indeed correct as a tactical team made their way towards them. "We have company, we need to move."
"I'm on it," Daisy said, already undoing Peppers seatbelt. She dared a glance to her sister and Lyla, seeing that neither of them were moving. Dread filled her at the thought, as she took a moment to concentrate on the vibrations from their bodies, sighing in relief when she felt their hearts still pumping. They were on the side of the limo that got hit.
As Pepper fell free from her seat, Daisy moved over to her sister next, her dark green eyes opening in pain, taking in the scene before her.
"No, get Lyla first," she said, pushing her sister towards her girlfriend. As much as she wanted to help her sister first, Daisy moved onto Lyla instead, trusting that Karley would be fine. Just as she reached the blond, gunshots started going off, making her ears ring even worse.
As hard as she tried, the seatbelt wouldn't budge.
"Daisy I need you over here," Natasha said, having already crawled through the shattered windows of the car to take cover behind the wall of the grocery store they crashed through.
"Daisy go, I'll get them down," Pepper promised, moving to do just that. Daisy nodded, heading out to join Natasha behind the opposite wall.
"How many Nat?" She asked, hoping that it wasn't too bad.
"Too many. We need to get out of here. How are the rest of them?"
"Not good," Daisy replied, peaking around and sending a shockwave into a few men who were trying to close in on them. Natasha was right, there were an endless amount of them out there. "We need to buy some time."
"You know, we haven't gone on a real date yet?" Natasha said, peaking around the corner to fire a few shots off.
"I was actually thinking about that," Daisy flirted, as she created a ball of energy in her hands before throwing it into the middle of the fray, knocking down multiple men and breaking a fire hydrant, the water giving them a bit more concealment. "I was thinking smoothies and the drive ins?"
Natasha smiled for a second, before emptying the rest of her mag as the enemy tried flanking them.
Inside of the car, Pepper managed to finally get Karley free, Happy freeing himself. But as she's been working on Lyla, she wasn't able to get the younger girl out, her seatbelt seemed to be jammed.
"I-I think I can get out on my own, go help your sister and Natasha," she told her girlfriend. "Trust me love, I'll be okay, go help them."
"Pepper, come on," Happy said, grabbing the woman and leading her deep into the grocery store, looking for an exit.
"I'm not leaving you in here Lyla," Karley said in frustration, pulling as hard as she could on the buckle.
"Just go, trust me, I can get out," the blond said again, more firmly this time. She had felt the fire hydrant outside break open, as she called the water to gather towards her. Karley finally nodded, seeing what her girlfriend was doing, before joining Daisy by the wall.
"How bad?" She asked, not daring to glance around the corner as bullets were flying through the walls.
"It's bad, we need to get out of here. Where are Happy and Pepper?" Natasha asked.
"Working on our exit plan," she replied.
"Can't you go into the astral plane?" Daisy asked, sending another shockwave out, a bullet narrowly missing her head. They were getting closer.
Natasha nearly jumped out of her skin when Lyla slowly rose up from the water beside the redhead, her body becoming physical once more.
"What the hell kid, you scared the shit out of me!" Natasha's voice broke a bit, betraying her brave face. Daisy would've laughed but she was more worried as the men outside seemed to be endless.
"I don't think I'll be able to concentrate enough to go into the astral plane with bullets flying around everywhere," she explained. Happy ran up to them at that moment.
"Let's go, I got the back door open," he said. "We'll steal a car on the way."
"Did you call Tony? Or anyone?" Natasha asked, shooting as she covered Lyla's body with her own, moving to the back of the store.
"Of course I called the tin man, Romanoff," he answered, leading them to the back door, leaving the two sisters to hold the rest off.
"You know how I showed you something cool the other night?" Karley asked, an idea forming in her mind. "Think these guys like dancing lights?"
"I'm not sure that's gonna work," Daisy answered. "You gonna hypnotize them?" Her sister laughed.
"No, I'm just proving that my powers are cooler than yours." Karley popped out from their hiding spot, creating the same dancing lights that she had the other night, hundreds of small blue orbs appearing as they started to grow brighter and brighter, the Inhuman feeding more energy into them. The men were confused for a second as they looked at the lights in concern before they all blew up at once, leveling them all to the ground. They weren't fatal, but they were certainly going to leave a mark in the morning.
"Holy shit," Daisy said in awe, admiring her sisters work for a moment before pushing the taller girl towards the back. "Let's go."
"We need to move," Natasha said, keeping an eye on the alley, making sure it was safe. "Shit," Natasha cursed, shooting the men who were now entering the alleyway, Daisy holding them off from the door way. They were boxed in. Even between the three Inhuman's, Karley knew there was no safe was out of this.
"Everyone get close to me," Karley demanded, no one questioned it as they all gathered around the Inhuman. Closing her eyes, she tried as hard as she could to project herself into the astral plane, concentrating as she felt the familiar feeling of energy explode from her body, surrounding her and her friends.
"Where the hell are we?" Pepper asked, looking around at the almost frozen time, amazed.
"The astral plane," Karley answered, stumbling away from Lyla as she began sapping the energy from the nearest enemies, watching as they slowly crumpled to the ground.
"Uhhh, Karley, can't bullets make their way through your forcefield?" Daisy asked, looking at a few bullets heading towards their physical bodies.
"Shit," the younger sibling cursed, gently limping over towards the bullets in question. They had a faint glowing energy coming off of them. She had never tried taking energy from a bullet before, but now was as good of time as ever. Everyone watched as she gently tapped the bullet, successfully absorbing its energy as the bullet fell to the ground. "Huh, you learn something new every day." She continued doing this to all the bullets surrounding them.
"This is amazing," Happy commented, trying to touch one of the men as well, but his hand passed through. He looked to Karley for an explanation.
"Only I have a connection to the plane, so only I can touch the stuff," she explained, running around doing her work.
Happy curiously tried throwing a punch towards Romanoff, thinking that it would pass through her as well. He was proved wrong when she caught his fist a few inches from her face.
"You want round two Happy?" She asked, recalling the time she put him on his ass in the boxing ring.
"I should've explained that better," Karley laughed. "We can physically touch each other, but only I can sap the energy out of objects."
"Not that I'm complaining, but what exactly are we hoping for in here?" Daisy said, keeping a careful eye out for any more bullets coming towards their bodies.
"I'm not sure," Karley sighed, stopping more bullets. I just knew that we needed some cover."
"How long can we stay in here?" Lyla asked, walking around and waving her hand in front of a man coming through the back door.
"Only a few minutes," Karley answered, stuffing her hands in her pockets as there weren't any immediate bullets near them. "So we need a game plan."
"Well we're pretty boxed in," Natasha pointed out, gesturing to their frozen bodies inside the forcefield and the dozens of men closing in on them.
"Tony should be here any minute, you said we could stay here for a few minutes, hopefully he gets here by then," Happy said, taking a note out of Lyla's book as he shadow boxed with a female agent in front of him.
"You're forgetting the fact that time passes differently in here Happy," Daisy said, scanning the sky for any signs of rescue.
"Yeah, only a few seconds have passed outside," Karley said, touching a few more bullets.
"Why don't you walk over and suck their soul out of their body or whatever it is that you do then," Happy asked, gesturing to the people down the alley.
"Because, as I've learned with my powers," said the younger sister, walking about fifty feet from where their bodies were frozen. "Even I have my limits," she explained, trying to walk further but stopping when her nose and ears started to bleed, wincing before walking back towards them.
"This is so freaky," Pepper exclaimed, watching as the physical body of Karley started to bleed from her nose and ears as well.
"Guys," Lyla said, pointing to the sky where they could see Tony had finally arrived, moving much faster than the rest of the agents on the ground.
"Oh thank god," Karley sighed in relief, her nose still bleeding profusely. She knew that their time was almost up. "As soon as we get back into our physical bodies, we need to hit the ground so we don't get shot up. Just a fair warning, we're all gonna feel some mild vertigo."
"Okay are we ready to do this then?" Natasha asked, approaching their bodies. She was confused when she saw that Karley's chest was starting to run with a red liquid, horror filling her face as she snapped back towards the girls astral projection.
"Daisy?" Karley asked in pain, clutching her stomach where she had unknowingly started bleeding, before falling to her knees.
"Karley?" The older sibling asked, running to her sister before her head could hit the ground.
Everything happened all at once. The world seemed to literally fold in on the astral plane, likely from her sister being shot and not being able to hold their connections anymore.
"Get back to your bodies!" Daisy screamed, picking up her sisters limp body, as the rest ran towards their physical bodies. She knew what would happen if they got abandoned in the astral plane, Strange having explained it to her not too long ago. Lyla, Happy and Pepper jumped back into their bodies easily enough, but Natasha hesitated a moment, looking back to Daisy dragging Karley's limp body. "Go!" Daisy screamed to the redhead. She shook her head in frustration before jumping into her body too.
"Daisy let me go," her sister whispered weakly, seeing that the astral projection world was falling apart around them.
"Not a chance in hell," Daisy answered, continuing to drag them forward.
Flashbacks from Afghanistan flooded her mind as Daisy desperately ran towards their bodies, Karley trying to help as best she could, but the all too familiar pain of being shot was too much. She silently cursed to herself, it seems that she missed a bullet. A fatal mistake. But she wasn't going to let it get her sister killed too, not like she had with her fire team in the desert.
"We're not gonna make it sis, please, let me go," she tried again, speaking becoming difficult as blood filled her lungs. Looking to their physical bodies, she had seen that her own had been thrown against the wall of the alleyway from the force of the shot. Lyla, Happy and Pepper were all in the process of dropping to the ground, Natasha firing her gun.
"I told you, wherever you go, I go, remember?" She recalled the exact words she told her younger sister the night before. The astral world was about to fall out from beneath them when they finally reached their bodies, Daisy using all of her strength to push them forwards. Then everything sped up at once.
Bullets flew around them as everyone hit the ground. Tony, seeing how bad the situation was, shot a small rocket from his arm, which broke into many smaller ones, aiming at all the nearby enemies, taking them down. Daisy and Natasha easily finished off them rest of them.
"You girls really cannot stay out of trouble, can you?" Stark said, flying down to the alley, not knowing the gravity of the situation as he made his way towards the group.
Seeing the last body hit the pavement of the alley, Daisy instantly dropped to her sisters side, turning her over. She wasn't moving.
"Karley?" She whispered, removing her sisters hand from the wound on her stomach, drenched in blood. "Please say something."
Lyla had crawled her way over as well, taking in the sight in front of her. Training to be a doctor, she knew that her girlfriend was dying, if she wasn't already dead. Tears started falling from her eyes. She had just gotten her girlfriend back from the war she was in, and then got her back from the Red Dawn. She couldn't lose her, not again. This was becoming too familiar for them.
"Karls?" She whispered the nickname, grabbing the brunettes cold hand between her own. "You can't do this to me, to us. You don't get to die, not after everything that's happened."
Daisy felt her own tears streaming down her face, watching as her sisters breathing became slower.
"Lyla, can't you do anything?" The older sister pleaded, looking for help from the blond. "You're a doctor, do something!"
"The bullet hit her major organs, even if we had time to get her to a medical facility, her chances are slim," said the blond, wiping the tears from her cheek. She watched in amazement as tears she had just wiped away slowly made their way to a small cut on her hand before the cut stitched itself together. She thought she was seeing things, but she hadn't. That was real. She had an idea. "I need water, get me water!" She said to no one in particular.
Stark, finally seeing what had happened, scanned the pavement below them for a second before punching through the ground and ripping a water pipe up, instantly soaking everyone gathered there. He didn't know why the blond needed it, but he wasn't going to question her logic. He knew that her powers involved manipulating liquids.
It felt as if a storm had come down on them, with the water pipe now gushing everywhere. Lyla placed her hands around the bullet wound on Karley's stomach, willing the water to do what it had done for her.
Daisy watched in awe as the blond guided the water around her sisters wound as the skin very slowly started to piece back together, the bleeding stopping but not gone. The wound wasn't healed completely, but Karley wasn't bleeding out anymore, instead there was looked like a small incision in its wake. It felt like a lifetime had passed when Lyla fell backwards, crying in relief at what she had managed to accomplish.
"We need to get her to medical attention, and we need to get her there now," the blond said shakily through the tears.
"You're amazing, Lyla," Daisy said, patting her on her back, while never letting go of her sisters hand. Karley's deep green eyes fluttered open, scanning the faces above her.
"Shit, that hurt," she groaned, trying to sit up before her sister and girlfriend pushed her back down.
"Take it easy little Johnson," Stark gently said. "We have a Quinjet on the way, you're gonna be okay."
