Four Months Later
As Karley ran down the alleyway, chest heaving in exhaustion, she dared a glance over her shoulder. She was being followed, and they were close. A bullet narrowly missed her as she took off in a sprint again, the rain clouding her vision.
Rounding a corner she was met with a dead end, turning around with glowing hands to face her pursuers.
A few second later four woman turned the corner and aimed their guns at the inhuman.
"Mrs. Frederic wants you back alive," one of them said, lowering her gun to a nonfatal area of Karley's body. "But she said to bring you in with whatever means necessary."
Just as she went to pull the trigger, a figure jumped from the roof above and ripped the assault rifle from her hands and breaking the weapon in half with his metal arm. The two began fighting as Karley blasted the rest of the women's rifles, melting them into nothing. As the three girls approached in their catsuits, Yelena finally jumped out from behind her door. Wasting not even a second, the blond tossed a red vial into the air before shielding her eyes from the blast that followed.
It took the Widow's a few seconds, but they all eventually came to their senses. The one that was fighting with Bucky stopped in a heartbeat, instead backing up from the super soldier with raised hands.
"Took you long enough," Bucky said as he wiped his bloody nose. "Your plans suck."
"I'm so happy someone else finally agrees with me," Karley said as she caught her breath and shot the blond a smile.
"What's going on?" One of the Widow's asked the group, looking around curiously. This was the same reaction that most of the girls had once they had been freed from the conciliums control. They were confused, scared or skeptical. Most of the time they were all three.
"You're free now," Yelena said in a soft voice, knowing what it felt like to finally be free. "The Red Dawn's control over you is gone now," she promised, holding her hands up in surrender as she approached them.
"That's not possible," one of them scoffed, looking at her hands as thunder boomed, lightning following just after. "How'd you do it?"
"There's an antidote now," Bucky explained, still nursing his nose against the brick wall of the alley.
"What do we do?" Another one asked. "We have no where to go, no life, nothing to fall back on."
"You have a place now," Karley said after she had finally caught her breath enough to stand. "We've been travelling around the globe for the last three months, freeing all of the Widows we can and sending them to a safe haven. Somewhere that will take care of you and set you up with a life, erase your identity."
"Where is that?" A girl who couldn't have been older than Karley asked.
"It's called S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm sure you've heard of us," Karley questioned. They nodded their heads. Everyone has heard of S.H.I.E.L.D. "I have an escape pod ready for you right now if you'd like to go?"
Over the thunder of the storm, they could all hear sirens going off. It was time to go.
"How do we know it's not a trap?" The skeptical one asked, eyes darting around.
"We just freed you doll. You already walked into our trap, we could've killed you but we saved you," Bucky said, running his hand through his now short hair. He had decided that he needed a change, especially going into the world again where Ross could track them down at any moment.
"We don't have much time though," Yelena explained, clicking a button on her watch as she sent her location out. "Either come with us and let us set you up with a new life, or take a chance on your own. But if you join us, I promise you won't regret it."
"How are we getting away from the police?" The scared one asked as the sirens grew closer.
"Glad you asked," Karley said with a smile, eyes on the stormy sky above them. It took a few seconds but finally the escape pod landed on the broken cement of the alleyway with a thud, the doors to the white room opening. "This is our ride," she said, walking in with Yelena and Bucky behind her. "You coming?"
The four widows cautiously walked in as well as the doors closed behind the seven of them.
"Mack, bring us up," Yelena said into her earpiece. Not a moment later they were soaring through the storm, up and up and up for what seemed like forever.
"This is too crazy to be real," one of the girls said in awe as she looked out the window. She couldn't see the ground anymore as they soared through the clouds.
"Thank you, by the way," another said. "My name's Kyra, the others are Amanda, Brooke, and Addison."
Kyra, the skeptical one of the group, looked to be in her late twenties or early thirties. She was obviously the leader of their group as the other three couldn't have been in their mid twenties.
"I'm Yelena, this old man is Bucky," he gave a small wave from the bench. "And this is Karley."
"We know who you are, trust me," Amanda said, still watching out the window. "Mrs. Frederic has sent us all on the hunt for you ever since she saw you break out of prison."
"Is Mrs. Frederic the one in charge of the Widow's now?" Yelena asked, watching as they were finally approaching the plane.
"Yes and no," Kyra stated. "She's been working a lot closer with Hydra ever since the Red Dawn fell, thanks to you. We're being controlled still by Hydra, but Mrs. Frederic has the man who is in charge wrapped around her finger."
"What's his name?" Bucky asked, forgetting his bloody nose at this point.
"Wolfgang von Strucker," Addison said with a shiver. "He's one of the cruelest, heartless people there are. He's terminated Widow's without batting an eye for the smallest mistake. He has no value for human life."
Karley thought back to her time with the Red Dawn. She remembers the name being mentioned once or twice, other than that she didn't recall meeting the man face to face. She eyed Yelena, wordlessly asking her if she knew who he was. She shook her head no, as did Bucky.
"Do you know anything else that could be of use to us?" Karley asked the girls as the escape pod slowly docked itself in the Bus.
"They didn't keep us up to date on their secret plans," Brooke scoffed, throwing the inhuman a dirty look.
Karley sighed as the box finally came to a halt. The girls looked through the window curiously as Karley, Bucky and Yelena silently made their way to the door. Kyra noticed this and took a step towards them, but Karley's eyes glowed blue and a wall of energy shot up through the ground, separating the two groups from each other. She could see the look of panic on their face, thinking they've been tricked as the trio stepped outside of the escape pod and allowed the doors to close.
"This is for everyone's safety," Yelena explained, pressing her hand against the window in empathy. She hated that they had to do this, but it was for the best.
"What are you going to do with us?" Amanda asked in a slightly panicked voice, the four women darting around and looking for any way out.
"We're here to help you," a masculine voice answered her, approaching the box. "My name is Agent Mackenzie, you can call me Mack. We're all friends here."
Karley smiled at the giant man, knowing that he was Daisy's best friend. The last three months have been spent working with Mack and Yo-Yo on occasion.
Bucky didn't love the idea of working with S.H.I.E.L.D. at first, knowing that they had once been filled with Hydra Agents. But over the last few months of getting to know this team his guard was lowered. They were good people, but he didn't know if he was ever going to be able to fully trust them. Not even when Steve told him it was okay.
"Good to see you, teddy," Karley told the man, punching his arm in greeting as he smiled.
"You too, flicker," he replied, causing her to roll her eyes at the nickname. The first time they met, knowing that she was Daisy's sister, he gave her the nickname. Ever since them she's taken to calling him teddy, which was short for teddy bear. Daisy had to her how much of a softy she was. It's also because every now and again her eyes would flicker blue with her power.
In the last few months she's also learned that she didn't need her hands to use her powers. She could use her eyes, as weird as that sounded. One day during training with Yelena, she had told Karley not to use her powers, which was fine with her since she could use the practice on hand to hand combat. However, during a grueling training session, Yelena had pinned her arms to the ground.
As she was lying there helpless, her eyes had turned a deep blue, moments later a burst of energy shot out from her chest and into the blond, sending her flying through the air. Of course Karley had used her powers to gently land the blond on the ground, who then proceeded to curse the inhuman out.
Thinking about Yelena had Karley grinning like an idiot. The two of them had grown inseparable in the last few months. As much as the brunette like her, it wasn't the right time to start a relationship. They were always too busy. Besides, she didn't even know if Yelena liked her back.
Of course there was the moment they shared months ago at Melina's house before the Red Room attacked them, but they had both been drinking and Karley wasn't even sure that counted.
"I'm going to grab a drink," Bucky said, pinching her nose in pain as he walked away.
"Are we on the way back to the Playground?" Karley asked.
"Yeah, there's a surprise waiting for you two when you get there," he said with a smile, his eyes never leaving his clipboard. "But I have to get to work on these ladies. You two are good to go relax for the rest of the flight."
"You sure?" Yelena asked him, wanting to help in any way she could.
"I'm sure, go relax. You guys have been up for days," he assured the blond.
Yelena smiled and patted his shoulder as she turned to leave. The blond and Mack had also become close friends over the last few months. The older man would show her all the best video games to play and teach her how to beat them. He also took the time to show her his motorcycles when they were off work, which was her favorite part. She wanted to get one so badly, and Mack promised her he would help her pick one out and fix it up together.
"I'll be at the mini bar if you wanna join me," she told Karley on her way out.
"I'll be right with you, I'm going to go shower quick," she promised the blond.
"It better be a quick shower," Mack joked. "The Bus has limited water."
"I know," she said with a smile, which quickly disappeared as she turned to a more serious note. "Do you think we'll ever be able to truly bring Hydra down?"
Mack, sensing the sudden change in attitude turned his attention to the younger girl. Every time he looked at Karley he saw so much of Daisy in her it was crazy. He missed his best friend, but he also knew that she was doing great work with the Avengers. He also understood why she hasn't visited in four months, not wanting to bring attention towards the small S.H.I.E.L.D. agency they had up and running.
Even after four months of the public rioting and protesting in the streets, Ross and the Senate were still hellbent on finding Karley, Yelena and Bucky. They had even made a special international task force dedicated to hunting the trio down, stating that they were a 'danger to society' and must be 'brought to justice.' He didn't know how a man like that could say those things after all the work Karley, Bucky and Yelena had managed to accomplish over the past three months.
They had freed over twenty Widows with the flash drive Natasha had managed to download from Dreykovs servers before the Red Room crashed. Bruce and Simmons had also managed to recreate the concilium cure and sent the recipe to the Playground where their science division had created vials of the cure, putting them in little vials with a timer on them. They were also designed to explode in a cloud of up to a ten foot radius, making their job easier.
Not only had the trio freed widows, but they had also encountered one of their inhumans that were sent to track them down. During the fight, Karley recognized the kid as he teleported and managed to get away. It was Blake, the inhuman who had teleported Rumlow into her cell that fateful night. Although they didn't manage to capture Blake, they had managed to defend themselves from the kid.
"I don't know, Karley. An organization as powerful as Hydra is a tough one to beat. Even Captain America couldn't take them down. I hope we can one day, but it might be a long process," Mack answered her, rubbing his bald head. "You know the work you're doing is making a difference?"
"I know," she said honestly, eyes never leaving the four women in the escape pod as they stared back at her. "I know that. But what's to stop them from continuing this?"
"That's what we're working on kid. Every time you bring these girls in, they get their lives back. We even have some of them working for us as Agents or counselors or in our science division."
"Yeah I should be getting paid more for bringing you in new Agents," Karley joked, finally breaking her gaze from the widows in the pod. "Take good care of them?"
"Always do flicker, now get out of here. You're soaking wet and stink," he laughed, softly pushing her towards the door.
Karley smiled as she made her way to her small bunk aboard the Bus and showering. Her hair had grown down to her mid back over the last four months. Stepping out of the brisk, lukewarm shower she braided her hair and let it hang on her left shoulder before changing into a set of leggings and a green shirt and making her way to the mini bar.
As she quietly approached she could see Bucky had found his way there before her and was sitting with Yelena. The two of them were side by side as the blond laughed at something Bucky said. Her smile was genuine as her head rolled back from the force of laughter.
Karley stood in the doorway to the living area watching them for a moment, a pang of jealousy shooting through her at the scene in front of her.
Yelena, Bucky and Karley had grown the closest out of everyone over the rough, busy few months. The trio had enjoyed a brief break in Wakanda as the inhuman healed her knee. While there Yelena and Karley would go for walks to where Bucky had lived, visiting him and his goats almost every day. He had even named two of them after the ladies. When asked why they were named after them, Bucky laughed and gestured to the two farm animals as they butted heads and started fighting.
Once the goat named after Yelena walked away she started lazily eating grass and lay down next to another goat that was missing one of his front legs. They curled up next to each other as the one named after Karley had walked away and lay down alone.
"That's you Bucky," Yelena had told the man, squinting through the Wakandan afternoon sun.
"Is it because they're lovers?" Bucky asked, shooting the blond a sly smirk resulting in her blushing.
That was the first time Karley had remember feeling jealous of the two of them. There were a few times when Bucky had flirted with Yelena during missions and while they were hanging out, but that wasn't what caused Karley the most pain. What hurt was that Yelena would blush every time he flirted with the blond, and she would even flirt back. They hadn't hooked up or made anything serious of the banter, at least not to Karley's knowledge. Just the thought of Yelena and Bucky caused her chest to constrict.
Ever since she had met the blond on that rooftop in Hungary, Karly was smitten with Yelena. It had grown into more than just a crush as the weeks went by and they lived, worked and laughed together. She had feelings for Yelena, serious ones at that.
So as she stood in the doorway, watching Yelena and Bucky laughing together, her chest constricted so much that it hurt to breath. She could feel the jealousy building inside of her until she realized her eyes were glowing. Karley tried to get her powers under control, but it was too late as one of the shot glasses burned a bright blue before shattering on the mini bar.
The two stopped laughing as they turned around to see Karley standing there in silence.
"Sorry!" She said quickly at their concerned glances. "You know I'm still getting used to this new development," she pointed at her eyes, lying in hopes they didn't notice what was really wrong with her. She quickly made her way to the mini bar and started scooping the glass into her hands.
"It's alright doll," Bucky said, pushing her away and grabbing the glass with his metallic arm instead so she didn't cut herself. "Lena and I were just about to watch Game of Thrones, wanna join us?"
Game of Thrones had been the trio's show over the last months, having watched it together on their time off or between missions. They were on the season two finale tonight, which Karley was excited for and didn't want to miss it for the world. It was also the only time she had an excuse to sit close to Yelena and share a blanket.
But something inside of her was bitter and sad. She didn't want to watch their show, because that would also mean Bucky would get to sit close to Yelena.
Karley didn't know where this string jealousy was coming from all of the sudden, but it was only getting worse at the thought that if she didn't watch it that Yelena and Bucky would watch it together. Alone.
But deep down inside of her, Karley knew that Yelena wasn't hers, no matter how much she wanted the blond. The small moment that they almost shared at Melina's house outside of St. Petersburg didn't count. Maybe she had read too much into that night, which could be blamed on the alcohol. But over the last months the two woman had shared moments. Special moments, just like they had at Melina's house, like they had the night of their escape from the Raft.
Every time they did share a moment, something or someone would ruin it though.
So if Yelena wanted to be with Bucky, who she knew was a great match for the blond, who was she to stand in the way?
"No, I think I'm gonna turn in until we get to the Playground," Karley said with a sad smile, her heart breaking on the inside.
Yelena frowned at the rejection, knowing that tonight was the season two finale. She remember the brunette was so excited to watch it a few nights ago, begging to watch the next episode but they had to be up early in the morning. So to hear her say she didn't want to watch the show, the blond knew something was up.
"Come on, Karley. You were so excited the other night!" Yelena voiced her thoughts.
"I know," Karley said as she walked backwards towards the living quarters. "I've got a headache after today though, really it's okay, you two can watch it and I'll catch up another night."
"Are you sure?" Bucky asked with a frown, also sensing something off with the younger girl. "We can always hold off."
"No!" The inhuman shouted too quickly, internally wincing. "I just mean, I don't want to be the buzzkill. Seriously guys, go on without me, I'll catch up later. Goodnight!" She said, quickly turning on her heel and walking to her room, not giving them a chance to question her strange behavior.
She sighed in relief against her door before slowly flopping onto the bed, staring at the ceiling in thought. She wasn't even tired in the slightest and because of that, her mind went into overdrive.
Karley didn't know what's been up with her mood today. It had been a good day, they saved four Widows without incident and gotten them here. She was supposed to sit down, have a few drinks with her friends and watch their TV show, but her mood and jealousy had gotten in the way of that.
Not to mention that she was missing her sister like crazy. She hadn't seen Daisy in four months and had only gotten to speak to her a few times due to the fact that Ross was keeping such a close eye on her. It was dangerous for Daisy to even use the phone that Shuri had given the duo. Yelena and Natasha had the same problems too, which sucked.
And then there was the fact that she hadn't seen or talked to Lyla, her best friend since middle school. She couldn't call her to rant about her day, or about her troubles. Even though they had broken up and gone separate ways, they were still great friends. Last Karley knew, Lyla had continued her residency in New York. Every hospital wanted her on their side after she discovered her healing abilities.
Karley also hadn't seen or talked to her parents in almost five months now. She could only hope that Daisy or someone had told them she was safe and sound.
At the end of the day, Karley was alone.
Sure she had Mack and they were great friends, but it wasn't the same. It felt like she had started her life over three times in the last few years. Once when she joined the Marines, then again when she became a civilian, and again once more when she became Surge, then again when she was just Karley the inhuman. And here she was again on the run and away from everyone she had once known.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.
"Who is it?" She gently called out, arms crossed behind her head as she didn't move a muscle.
"It's Yelena," the blonds voice came from through the door. Karley groaned internally. She was the last person she wanted to see at the moment.
"Come in," Karley said as the door opened, the blond slipping in before closing it once more. She sat at the foot of the bed, giving the inhuman her space.
"What's wrong?" Yelena asked, staring at the green eyes which hadn't left the ceiling. "And don't say nothing, because I know there's something bothering you, дорогой."
Karley's eye twitched at the Russian name Yelena had given her forever ago. She knew it meant darling, but that just confused her even more. Sitting up in her bed, Karley stared into Yelena's blue eyes.
"Why do you call me that?" She asked honestly, her hands falling into her lap so she didn't fidget with her nerves.
"You mean darling?" Yelena asked. Karley nodded her head as she studied the blonds face. "I-I don't know. It's just something that seems fitting for you I guess. Do you not like it?"
"No I don't mind it," Karley said, letting out a huff of air. "I actually love when you call me darling," she admitted, her eyes scanning Yelena's for a reaction.
"You do?"
Karley nodded her head and scooted closer to the blond.
"I do. I've loved the name since you first told me what it meant at the tower."
Yelena laughed a bit, remembering how dim Karley was being the first time she had called her darling.
"I don't call anyone else дорогой, just you Karley," the blond stated, having an idea of why the brunette was upset.
She could see the jealousy on Karley from a mile away. Bucky was a man and was too small minded to notice the jealousy, but Yelena was great at reading people. It came with the job after all.
Every time Bucky flirted with Yelena, she would flirt back for fun and out of habit. It didn't mean anything to her though. As great as Bucky was, she had her eyes on the inhuman girl in front of her since they had met. That's why she had almost kissed the taller girl in St. Petersburg.
Ever since that night, she wasn't sure if Karley liked her or not. Of course they had shared moments since then, but she didn't want to ruin their friendship. Karley was the first friend she's even had since the Red Room, and she was scared of losing that bond they shared. She's also never been in a relationship that wasn't just an act, and she was scared to be herself and scare the girl away. If she lost Karley she wasn't sure what she would do.
Karley was everything to her.
"You better not," Karley whispered, their eyes locked on each other as the storm continued to pelt the plane. Lightning flashed through the dark room as they sat there, unmoving.
Yelena's eyes flickered to the brunettes lips as they slowly inched towards each other, just like they had in St. Petersburg. Their foreheads touched and the blond sucked in a nervous breath, causing Karley to smile as her larger hands slowly cupped the side of her face.
"So you do like me?" Yelena asked hopefully as another flash of lightning streaked across the room.
"Yeah, I like you too," Karley told her, bringing their faces closer together. Before they could kiss, however, an alarm went off on the plane.
"Attention passengers, buckle up, we're going to be experiencing some slight turbulence."
Yelena looked at the yellow light that was flickering above them, choosing to ignore it as she turned back towards Karley.
"Is it just me or are we always being interrupted by something?" She complained to the brunette.
"Not this time, дорогой," Karley said, once again grabbing the blonds face in her hands as she brought their lips together.
The kiss was slow and sweet, the two of them finally letting the other know how much they liked each other. As they broke apart for air, they were both grinning like idiots. Yelena quickly kicked her shoes off and crawled into Karley's lap, wrapping her legs around the taller woman's back as she kissed her again. Soon the gentle kisses they shared turned into more passionate, hungry ones.
Yelena, being the tease she is, nibbled on the brunettes lower lip causing her to groan in frustration. Karley went to retaliate but the blond quickly shoved her onto her back, causing the brunette to look up at her and raise her eyebrows.
"I've been wanting to do this forever now," Yelena admitted, straddling Karley's waste before leaning down and resuming her work. They stayed like that for a minute before the blond couldn't help herself and kissed Karley's cheek, then her jaw and then her neck, the last one causing her to let out a small moan. "You like that?"
"You're such a tease, you know that?" Karley said, grabbing the blond as she flipped their positions around and hand her pinned now. "Let's see how you like it," she threatened as she leaned down and nibbled the blonds earlobe, causing her to hum in agreement. Karley then moved down to her neck and kissed it before lightly sucking on it.
"I see w-what you mean," Yelena stuttered as her back arched a bit when Karley pulled away, sitting on top of her and staring with a grin.
"Yeah? Good, cause two can play at that game if you want," she said with a laugh, another flash of lightning lighting up her face for a brief moment. Yelena grinned. She couldn't believe that these last five minutes had happened, but she couldn't be happier that they did. She had been waiting for this moment for months now.
"Hey Karley?" She asked, her hands resting on the brunettes thighs.
"Yeah?" The inhuman asked her as she crawled off the blond and laid down on the bed next to her, their face inches apart.
"I've never been in a real relationship," Yelena whispered, her accent thick. "But I would love to try one."
"I'll teach you," Karley told her, entwining their hands together. They fit perfectly, as if they were made for each other. "We'll go as slow as you want, Yelena. I want to try a relationship with you too. I've wanted to for awhile now."
"Oh I noticed tonight," Yelena laughed, causing the brunette next to her to cover her face up in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry, I swear I don't know where that came from," Karley groaned through her hands. Yelena gently reached over and peeled them away so she could look into those green eyes again.
"No need to apologize, I'm glad I came over tonight," she said, leaning over and kissing the girl again.
"I'm glad too," Karley said with a smile as the alarm above them stopped flashing. "Did Bucky notice?"
"No, I don't think so."
"Good. Did you still wanna go watch the season finale of Game of Thrones?" Karley asked, her mood lifted from the recent turn of events.
"Of course! Bucky is still waiting for us," Yelena said with a laugh. "I told him I would come grab you. By the way, there's no reason to be jealous. He's not the one I've been thinking about everyday."
"That's good," Karley grinned. "Let me give you a reason to think about me all night," she whispered before kissing the blond again, this one slow and sweet, letting her just how much she had been wanting to kiss her since they met. Once they broke apart again, Yelena was breathless.
"That's one way to do it, дорогой. Let's get going," she regretfully said. She would love nothing more than to stay in Karley's room and continue kissing the girl all night, but Bucky was waiting for them.
As the two of them joined Bucky, he had an array of snacks laid out on the coffee table with Game of Thrones pulled up and ready to go.
"It's about time," he said as the duo made their way to the couch to join him, Yelena sitting in the middle.
"Sorry, it took some time to convince her to get her lazy ass up," Yelena explained, reaching for the bag of pretzels.
"That's not what I meant," Bucky explained with a knowing grin at the two of them, causing them to blush at that.
"Not a word, Barnes," Karley threatened as she grabbed a blanket and wrapped her and Yelena up, the blond curling up and getting comfortable as they started the show.
Many hours and episodes later, the trio got ready for the landing of the plane. The Playground was located in Michigan, and their latest mission had been in western Canada so it had been a long flight. Mack had spent the entire flight talking to the four widows, explaining to them the processing they had to go through before they would be able to enter the world again, and offering them a job at S.H.I.E.L.D. if they wished so.
Bucky, Yelena and Karley had spent the entire time watching Game of Thrones and planning out their next steps.
As the ramp of the plane lowered, the team was laughing and shoving each other playfully until Karley, Yelena and Bucky had frozen in their tracks.
"Hey sis," Daisy said from the ground with Natasha, Steve, May, Coulson and FitzSimmons next to her. "Welcome home."
Bit of a shorter chapter, but Yelena and Karley finally kissed! Whoop whoop! Exciting stuff. And Daisy and Natasha finally stopped by! What's about to happen? Guess you'll have to keep reading to find out. This next chapter will be Daisy and Natasha during their four months apart and the chapter after that one will resume to this moment. Anyways, as always please drop a comment below!
