After Ross and the Senate had done a thorough search of Avengers Tower looking for the escaped fugitives, they had come up empty and left.
"Well that was fun," Tony commented, pouring himself a drink and taking a seat in the living room. "Jarvis scan for any bugs that our dear friend may have tried leaving behind please."
"Of course, sir. Starting scan now," the AI responded.
Coulson walked in with May and FitzSimmons.
"We have another inhuman that popped up this morning," Coulson told them as he gently sat down on the couch across from Stark with a file.
He had finally been allowed to walk on his own this morning, discarding the wheelchair he's been confined to recently. The heart had been working perfectly, and Stark was thinking about mass producing more of them to send to research facilities and eventually hospitals. It was a medical breakthrough, to say the least.
"Another one?" Daisy asked in disbelief as she walked in with Natasha behind her. "That makes three in two weeks. There hasn't been this many inhumans since the fish oil hit the stores last year. Or technically two years ago now," she said, titling her head in thought. For her and the rest of the team, that had happened last year. But for the rest of the world almost a year had passed while the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents were in the future. So it was really two years ago, almost three.
"There is no way that these inhumans are all from that temple in Pennsylvania," Simmons told them, taking the file from Coulson as she reviewed it. "A shapeshifter?"
"What?" Fitz asked, curiosity peaked as he peaked over his fiancé's shoulder to look at the file as well. "I'd say that's impossible but after these last few years, anything is possible."
"Well this new inhuman's name is Olivia O'Malley, twenty six years old," May stated as she pulled up the girls file on the living room TV. "She wasn't in the temple so the origins of where she got her powers are unknown."
"What put her on our radar?" Natasha asked.
"Glad you asked," Coulson said with a smile to his old friend. "Olivia was a small time singer in Vermont up until three months ago when she was reported missing. Local law enforcement did what they could but they didn't know they were looking for something who could literally change into anyone. Olivia also has robbed eight banks since that time, stealing over five million dollars."
Simmons passed the file over to Daisy, knowing that her friend would want to read it for herself. As the inhuman girl looked it over she could see pictures of what looked like a man exiting a bank with bags of cash. The security footage then switched to a woman, wearing the same clothes with the duffle bags, as she got into a car. There were multiple photographs from various crimes that Olivia has committed. One of them had captured her as she was in the process of shapeshifting, half of her body was a man and the other half a woman.
"The last bank she robbed she shot one of the security guards," May told the group. "He didn't make it."
"So she's escalating?" Natasha said mostly to herself.
"How do we track someone who can change their appearance?" Tony asked the obvious to the rest, hoping someone would have an answer.
"You don't," Simmons told him. "We'd have to catch her in the act."
"Lay a trap?" Natasha asked Daisy, already reading her girlfriends mind.
"Yeah but we have no clue what bank she's going to hit next," the inhuman said with a sigh.
"Ahh, leave that to me," Fitz said as he took off for the labs. Simmons sighed at her fiancé running off.
They were supposed to plan out more details for their wedding, but Fitz wasn't into planning it out. Sure he would help, but he'd rather spend time in the labs with Tony, who was also supposed to be planning his wedding with Pepper.
Pepper would get with Simmons as they usually did and force their soon to be husbands out of the lab, much to their dismay.
"He's going to create an algorithm using the collected data we have on Olivia," Simmons explained to the group.
"Alright then, I guess we just wait for the kid to be done and hope his plan works," Stark said, clapping his hands together and standing up. "I'm off to get the wedding invitations set up for the big day. See ya in the morning."
With that, he was gone, leaving the rest of them there with their thoughts.
"Are you still up for helping me look at some venues tomorrow Daisy?" Simmons asked her best friend and maid of honor.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Daisy replied, causing the ginger to smile as she left to make her fiancé some food. Lord knows how long it'd be until he left his lab.
"You up for some training in the morning before you leave with Simmons?" May asked the inhuman. She had been off her crunches for awhile now and was itching to get back onto the mats.
"Of course," Daisy answered as she sat on the couch with her girlfriend who was still studying the file on Olivia.
Without looking up, Natasha mumbled, "You two be careful, Daisy still has stitches from that inhibitor that was put in her neck. Not to mention she was stabbed less than a month ago."
"Yes ma'am," May retorted with a small smile as she too left the room, leaving only Coulson, Natasha and Daisy.
Coulson was sitting on the couch next to the girls, watching them with a careful eye. He had noticed how close the duo had grown over the last few months. They had gone from hating each other and fighting to dating. Oh how the tables turned, he thought with a laugh.
"What's funny DC?" Daisy asked him with a raised eyebrow.
"Nothing, just thinking how much these last few months have changed our team. I mean, FitzSimmons are getting married, May is off her crutches, Mack and Yo-Yo are running the Playground. You're in a relationship," he gestured to the redhead who looked up from the file at that, casting him a glance. "It's just that, things seem to be going back to normal."
"Yeah, they do seem to be looking up, don't they?" Daisy mused with a soft smile, leaning forward and clasping her hands together. She looked out the widow to see that the sun was setting, the beginnings of stars poking out.
The darkest nights produce the brightest stars.
Sure everything was starting to go back to normal for the team. But not for Daisy. Her sister was still being hunted down by Ross and the Senate, and they were talking about starting an international task force dedicated to bring in Yelena, Karley and Bucky.
"What's wrong love?" Natasha asked, placing her hand on the brunettes shoulder. She could see her girlfriend was clearly upset, and she knew what it was about. After all, Yelena was out there too.
"Just thinking about Karley," she admitted to the redhead.
"We're going to bring her home, Daisy," Coulson said as he slowly stood up from the couch. "You gave them the coordinates to the Playground?" She nodded. "Good. Stark's medical team wants me to stay here for a few more months for observation, but I was thinking about our next move after that. Obviously we have to wait for Ross to stop watching you so closely, which will take some time, but after I'm done here what do you think about returning back to the Playground?"
Just the though about her team leaving Avengers Tower tore Daisy in two directions. The family she's loved and grown with for years was going to go back to their main base in Michigan and continue their work. Of course, the only reason they had come to Avengers Tower in the first place was so they could gather their bearings after returning home from the future.
And they did.
Everyone had finally healed, at least physically, from their time in space. May was back on her feet, as was Coulson. Fitz had that bullet removed from his shoulder and made a swift recovery. Simmons was planning their wedding, which they still haven't decided a date. Mack had already left with Yo-Yo, Flint and Tess. The team had cleared their names in the eyes of the government with help from Stark.
Daisy had finally gotten a solution to her 'Destroyer of Worlds' problem, as much of a solution that was offered anyways.
So the next logical move was to get back to work on the Playground, but at the same time, she's grown attached to everyone at the Tower. All of the Avengers.
Her and Steve would go on morning runs, usually with Karley but her sister wasn't around anymore. He would also tell the sisters about his time in the '40's and go into fond memories of Peggy and his friends. The three of them would also train together and have fun after the day was over.
Then there was Stark. Daisy had challenged the man to a coding battle, seeing who could hack into one of the Air Forces remote satellites faster. Of course it was a close battle, but the billionaire was no match for Daisy who had beaten him by a minute. He was so impressed he offered her to look at his suit, which she did. She gave him some tips on how he could reprogram it to work faster and send quicker commands.
Before Thor had left for Asgard he offered Daisy his help should she ever need it, which was something she had never expected from the God of Thunder himself. She and him used to find each other in the kitchen at two in the morning, the blond eating poptarts as Daisy would grab a glass of water. Thor would tell her stories of Asgard and of his brother, Loki. Before he left, Thor had offered to take Daisy to Asgard sometime to see Lady Sif again and visit his home.
The movie nights that would take place in Wanda's room were some of the best nights, especially after a stressful day. Peter would always bring the snacks, Fitz and Wanda of course were in charge of building the pillow forts, and Karley and Daisy would pick out the movie. Where as her little sister would rather watch a comedy, Daisy always won control over the remote and turned it to a horror movie instead. The sisters even wrestled for the remote on occasion, only stopping when Vision would swoop in and steal it from both of them. For a two year old man, he was very mature.
Clint and Bruce she wasn't as close with, but they were both still good friends with her. Clint had left shortly after Karley had arrived to Avengers Tower, saying he had some business to attend to. Daisy didn't question it, but she hoped she'd see him again sometime soon. As for Bruce, he was sweet to Daisy. He offered to help her meditate on numerous occasions, stating that it helped him keep the other guy at bay sometimes.
And finally, there was Natasha.
Daisy had a rocky start with the redhead compared to the rest of the Avengers. But that quickly changed after the day her Kree inhibitor almost electrocuted her to death. Natasha had thought it was her fault, so she went out and beat up a bunch of Watchdogs for the inhuman to try and ease her guilt, only to find out it wasn't her fault at all. The gesture had touched Daisy, and she knew then and there that Natasha wasn't the heartless killer that the media made her out to be. No, she was so much more than that.
Then there was the fact that Natasha had saved her life that day in the alleyway, keeping her word that she would come alone. They stayed in the safehouse together and the redhead didn't judge her when she almost brought the house down on the duo. As hard as Daisy tried to push the spy away, Natasha wouldn't allow her to. Instead they stayed together, been through shit together and bonded during that time. Natasha would tell her little details about her life growing up, which Daisy could relate to as she was an orphan too.
The more time the two of them spent together, the closer they grew. Daisy was the first to realize that she liked Natasha more than a friend. They were sparring one day and the redhead had her pinned with a cocky smirk as she sat on top of the brunette.
"Maybe one day you'll be as good as me, Speedy," she told the girl, standing up and offering her a hand. Daisy smiled and graciously took it as the redhead pulled her up, but the inhuman had tripped into her arms as they were pressed chest to chest, breath heaving.
"We always seem to end up in this position," Daisy whispered, referring back to the hallways they had collided in week ago. The girls were so close their noses almost brushed against each other. Natasha was the first one to break away, clearing her throat as they went back to sparring.
Ever since that day, Daisy had taken to flirting with the spy here and there, seeing what would come of it. Never did she expect the redhead to pin her against the wall in the hallway and kiss her. After that kiss, they had tried having normal date nights, which of course been interrupted by Karley and Peter, which led the girls to sneaking out instead.
Of course Daisy knew that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would eventually leave Avengers Tower, but after spending so much time with the superheroes it wasn't going to be easy leaving behind their new friends. She didn't know what this would mean for her and Natasha's relationship. Daisy knew that she had a home with the Avengers as she was the perfect addition to the team, but she couldn't just leave behind her old life. She had a choice to make, and as hard as it was, she already knew what it was.
"I think I'm ready to get back to work," she told Coulson after a hesitant moment. "But I can't just leave behind the Avengers."
"You won't," Natasha told her girlfriend, bringing the younger girls hand to her lips for a kiss. "Coulson offered me a spot on your team."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Daisy asked the redhead. This was news to her.
"In her defense, I literally asked her like an hour ago," Coulson said with a laugh. "She accepted the position."
"You did?" Daisy asked, turning to face her girlfriend.
"I already talked to Steve," Natasha informed the brunette, watching as Coulson left the duo alone so they could talk about this new change of events. "We're both still Avengers, we always will be, and they'll let us know as soon as something big comes up."
"So you're going to come back and work for S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Daisy said with a bright smile. This was the best news she's heard. They would still be able to visit the Avengers whenever they wanted to, and would work with them on the bigger cases that came to light. But Natasha and her wouldn't be separated, instead they'd be working together. Their time wasn't coming to an end, much to Daisy's relief.
Not to mention that the new S.H.I.E.L.D. was highly discreet and secretive, which meant that Karley and Daisy would be reunited, along with Natasha and Yelena. Yelena had been an added bonus on joining the S.H.I.E.L.D. team for Natasha. She would get to be with her girlfriend and her sister, while continuing her work. It was a win for everybody.
"Yeah I am Speedy. I hope you don't mind, I was going to tell you later tonight over a bottle of wine," Natasha said with a grin.
"I don't mind at all Nat, this is so exciting," Daisy replied with a matching grin. "I hope you don't mind me being your boss though," she casually added on, her grin turning into a smirk, causing the redhead to laugh.
"My boss, huh? Well you're already bossy so it won't make a difference," she teased, causing the brunette to scoff and playfully punch her shoulder.
"I am not bossy, take it back."
"Not a chance."
"Oh you're going to regret that later tonight, Romanoff."
"Am I?"
A couple months later, the Avengers had finally managed to catch Olivia O'Malley and ship her off to the Raft. Well, the Avengers didn't necessarily catch her, but rather Peter did. He just so happened to be out and swinging about the city when she decided to rob another bank. His spider sense had told him that she wasn't who she appeared to be as she walked down the street with the face of someone else.
"It was crazy Mr. Stark! She literally changed her entire body into Steve Rogers and she had his super strength!" Peter told the group, recalling the fight that went down. Behind him, the news was playing footage of the battle between Spider-Man and 'Captain America' which was later revealed to be the shapeshifter.
"Good job kid," Tony said, patting him on the back like the proud father he was.
"Oh Peter!" Pepper called his name out as she walked into the room holding an invitation out to him. "Tony forgot to give you the invite to the wedding. It's set for June of next year."
"That's still eight months away," Peter said as he took the envelope gratefully. "Thank you, Ms. Potts. I'll make sure to order a suit now," he promised.
"No need," Tony said, eating a handful of blueberries. "I already have one for you kid."
"Thanks Mr. Stark," Peter said with a smile. Tony had bought him just about anything he ever needed. He was going into his third and final year of college, since he was on track to graduate early, and Stark had paid for his college in advance, knowing that he was tight on money. He also bought the kid a new car for his birthday when his old one broke down in the middle of winter.
"Jemma are you sure you don't want to move the wedding further back?" Fitz asked her at the mention of Tony and Peppers wedding in the summer.
"I want to do a winter wedding though, Fitz," she pouted a bit. Their wedding was in only a month, a couple weeks before Christmas. "Besides everything is already planned out."
"I know, I know," he said with a smile. "Just making sure love."
"Don't try and talk her out of it Fitz," Daisy said as she and Natasha cooked dinner for everyone. The Avengers had made a chart for chores and tasks lately, and it was their turn to cook dinner. Which wasn't the worst idea except for the fact that Daisy didn't know how to cook. Her girlfriend had been swatting her hand every time she did something wrong.
"You're still able to come to our wedding right Pete?" Fitz asked his friend who nodded his head.
"Yeah I'll be on winter break by then. Besides, I can't wait to see Karley!" He exclaimed happily.
Over the last few months he had been working on Karley's suit without her help. The rest of the Avengers had filled him in on what had happened while he was gone, and while it sucked he also understood why he couldn't visit them. Ever since Karley had went into hiding, he had started a club at his school dedicated to protesting against the task force that was developed to hunt his friend down.
He was almost done with her suit, which still had to be approved by Tony, but he was excited to see his friend and give her the gift. He couldn't wait.
"Me and you both," Daisy commented as she cut up some vegetables.
"Peter!" Coulson greeted as he and May walked into the kitchen as well. "Have you given any thought to my offer?"
Coulson had offered Peter a spot on the S.H.I.E.L.D. science division after he graduated college of course. The boy said that he'd have to think about it, but it wasn't a bad chance for him. He'd get to work as an Agent and continue doing what he loves most - science and being Spider-Man. Not to mention that he'd get to be with all his friends and work under Fitz, who was a brilliant engineer.
"I have, yes. I'm still undecided though," he told the man. "I would love to, but I don't want to move out of New York."
"About that," Stark trailed off. "I've actually been meaning to talk to you about starting a new base here in New York Coulson."
Coulson's eyes shot up at that. Not that it was a bad idea, it was actually a great idea and he'd love to have more bases up and running for S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Oh," he said in surprise at the offer. "Of course, Tony. We could talk about it after dinner?"
"Oh by talking I just meant that I was willing to pay for your base to be built here in New York," Tony said casually. "I was thinking about building it to be the head of Inhuman and enhanced humans research. Something I know Peter is interested in."
Peter blanched at that, not having expected it. "Are you for real Mr. Stark?"
"Oh I'm for real kid," he said casually draping an arm around the boy. "I know you want to join S.H.I.E.L.D. so you can have a team and your friends around you and continue being Spider-Man. I also know that you don't want to leave New York, which I agree with as I'd rather keep you close by. It also wouldn't hurt to have Coulson's team nearby since he's stealing Natasha and Daisy from me. They even get little Johnson. Besides, it would allow you to continue your research in biophysics."
"I don't know what to say, Tony," he said in awe. Stark has done so much for him since they met all those years ago and he continued helping Peter out even when he didn't have to. It was amazing to have Tony as a father figure in his life.
"You don't have to say anything kid. I've been thinking about it for awhile now and the base would only be a few hours down state from the tower," Stark said with a smile.
"And you want the base to be a research for Inhumans?" Daisy asked the billionaire hopefully. Having an entire base dedicated to helping her people would be a huge step forward.
"Yeah, with all these recent out breaks of Inhumans and powered people, I've been thinking about it for awhile now. Who better to run it than your team?" Tony answered.
"That'd be incredible," Coulson told the billionaire. Not only would S.H.I.E.L.D. be gaining a new base dedicated to their sole purpose, but it would also be near the Avengers. And Peter would probably be swayed to joining them.
"Ahh, it's nothing really," Stark said as he hopped off the chair and made his way to Peppers side. "Who do you think I got the idea from anyways?" Pepper blushed as everyone looked towards her.
"It was just an idea," she said shyly. "And we have the money for it."
"Thank you Pepper," Daisy said, shooting her friend a smile. "You have no idea how much this could do for us."
"Like Tony said, it's the least we could do for friends," she said with a smile.
"Well, I guess we'd better get to planning then Phil," Stark hopped up from his chair, Coulson following closely behind.
After dinner, everyone had watched a horror movie together in the living room before heading to bed. As Natasha and Daisy made it back to their shared room, the latter girl took a moment to stare at the door across the hall from theirs. The room that had once belonged to their little sisters.
"We'll see them soon, Daisy," her girlfriend said, pulling her into their room.
"I know, I just miss her," she admitted as they started changing into their pajamas.
"I know the feeling," Natasha replied, pulling her shirt over her head. They both hopped into bed as Daisy draped her arm over the redhead from behind, planting a kiss on her cheek.
"They'll be surprised to see us, that's for sure."
"Twenty bucks says they're dating."
"Oh I don't doubt it."
"It's funny how our sisters take after us isn't it?"
"Yeah," Daisy said with a laugh. "Life's changing for us, huh?"
"Yeah, it is. But in a good way."
"I love you Natasha."
"I love you too, Daisy."
So big changes coming this way! Anyways, Peter is about to be a bigger part of this story! Hope you enjoyed, and as always, drop a review below! Let me know what you'd like to see in this story and any ideas you have.
