Her hands desperately tore at the chains. He was hardly recognizable now and it scared her more than anything else could. She could still feel the chill underneath his tone that rang with silent rage and had to get out of this nest before he did something that couldn't take back. "Atem, no! Don't lose yourself in your anger! Killing him won't bring back the lives he has taken!" Tears spilled down her cheeks when his gaze remained upon the now thrashing sorcerer hoping to loosen his bindings. within those darkened depths did she see the crimson flames that swore to pay back all the pain he had endured. The sheer anger and hatred written across his features was frightening her very core, even her heart felt as though it was about to be crushed by the infectious pressure. Of course she understood his anger, her own parents had died at the hands of this monster, but this wasn't the answer! What could she possibly do to make him hear her?
The chains shifted, causing her attention to shift from the two giants to the hand that had grasped onto her ankle. "Anzu, can you hear me?" Yugi exhaled with relief when their gazes finally met. He'd been calling out to her for several minutes but she had been so focused upon his brother and the king of siren's that she hadn't heard him. His hand released her ankle and grasped tightly onto her trembling one. "Never in a million years did I think things would turn out this way, you have to believe me!"
"We won't help things if we don't get a grip," she swallowed the lump of emotion tangled within her throat and gave his hand a squeeze. "Now think, Yugi, is there anything that comes to mind that even has a chance of stoping this fight?" Her heart gave a painful lurch when his lavender eyes clouded, no answer surfacing within their depths or from between his lips as his head slowly lowered to hang. "There has to be something, anything that can help us!" A voice whispered within her ear, so faint that she at first thought it was just her imagination, but it was worth a try. "Your mother, the one who offered her scale so that I could live, was she a singer by any chance?"
His head shot upwards. "All the time, it was her favorite thing to do." The dots must have connected within his mind, judging from the hesitation appearing across his face. "You can't be serious. How is something like that supposed to help us?"
"You are a merman who can use magic, Yugi, and you're telling me that you doubt the power of music?"
She had a point. "I never said that." He sheepishly shrugged when her eyes narrowed slightly. "She used to sing lots of songs but how am I supposed to know which one could help us?"
Cerulean eyes drifted closed as the whisper came again, lips parting as words flooded her mind. "…If I stretch my hand countless times in this repeating world, will my ephemeral tears wash away the suffering of those I hold dear?…"
Yugi's eyes widened as the commotion around them faded to silence. He recognized that opening verse, it was the song their mother favored most, but how did Anzu know? She jumped as if waking from a dream as a fork of lightning struck one of the resurfaced shipwrecks nearby. If Atem, his older brother could perform such advanced spells, then so could he. The younger twin had thrived in the special arts relating to the music their mother had loved while the eldest had exceeded all expectations when it came to combat. "Only one problem: I haven't sang for several years now."
She blinked, gaze wandering upward as her cheeks tinted pink. "S-same." The blush darkened when he raised an eyebrow. "Just because I dance doesn't mean I sing! Not all dancers have to, you know!"
"So who is up for blame if we only make things worse with how off key we are?" He flinched when she gave his hand a squeeze. "Kidding!" His shoulders rose as he inhaled deeply. Never had he sung without music since they were young so this was going to be interesting. "If I pick up this fallen hope and join it with tomorrow, this entwined and distorted wish can also be set free…"
"Not a bad set of pipes." She gasped as his bronze tail steadily grew brighter with each word that passed between his lips, the Lear notes he sang causing the chains confining her to vibrate in response to the magical energy radiating off his form. Her gaze briefly rose to rest upon the towering giants, sending a silent prayer of hope that this crazy idea would work, then closed her eyes.
