How I Finally Started Dating Your Aunt Lena
By: The Rainbow Writers
Kara had to admit to herself that being at a 'gala' that firstly Lena wasn't hosting, and secondly since this was the first one she'd gone to 'knowingly' since the Crisis had switched all of the world history around had left her feeling a little off kilter. It wasn't that the exquisite navy blue box neck designer dress that Lena had 'gifted' her with for coming with her wasn't gorgeous and made her feel like a superstar, it did. It wasn't that the burgundy slip dress that Lena was wearing didn't cling to every single curve the brunette owned in a way that distracted Kara to no end, it did. It wasn't even that she had little to talk about with the rest of the people at the National City Business Associations Annual Gala, she didn't. It was mostly just the way that Lena had seemed to be nervous about the whole thing, which was a little unusual for the brunette.
As a tall grey gentleman was finally escorted politely away from a conversation with Lena by what Kara guessed was his wife, noting how she seemed to be faking away her discomfort that the man had been talking to such a beautiful woman, she finally saw her chance to try and help the brunette relax a little.
"Mmmmm so was he important, thinks he's important or just boring?" Kara slipped to the brunette's side with a fresh glass of wine for her to enjoy asking the standard question they had come up with in the pre-Crisis Earth when at this kind of function.
"Possibly important." Lena offered up the description with a slim shrug of her shoulders. "I think it depends on me really." She went on as she took the glass and enjoyed a sip. "He has investment money to offer, but it doesn't come without a price." She continued. "Not that it ever does but..." She gave Kara another shrug. "That's business as they say."
"And the good news is you're in the position to decide whose conditional money you want to say no to and who you want to say yes too, since the prototype for the new imaging machine debuted to rave reviews last week at the tech fair, SuperCorp is one of the new names on everyone's lips." Kara up talked the whole endeavor, knowing she herself had written an attempted equal viewed article about just this fact. That Brainy and Lena had decided to construct their new company not only to fund the work being done by the 'Super-Friends' at the Tower but also under the guiding principal of always having the 'betterment' of all of mankind as the top priority was something that Kara was incredibly proud of. It was one of the reasons that Supergirl had already publicly put her support being the corporation and was named as its charitable spokesperson.
"I am, but that doesn't make it that much better." Lena sighed softly. "I still have to impress in case I want to think about the benefits of a certain investor, rather than telling them where to go from the outset." She took another sip of wine. "This must be intolerably terrible for you."
"No, no of course not." Kara shook her head immediately moving to stand directly in front of Lena. "Firstly this is not my first rodeo, so I am way better at knowing when to politely excuse myself for shop talk... I also know when to interrupt now when you start rubbing your eyebrow..." She did the motion and saw Lena's smile come back. "Or when you adjust your dress because you're being unnecessarily ogled." She offered the serious issue. "And besides, I got all the pre-party fun getting ready with you at your place..." She noted the indeed definite up side. "And I get the knowledge that you'll make the limo driver go through Big Belly for me and nothing is as great as seeing the staff trying to figure out who Alonzo is ordering for in the back."
"And I thought you didn't like the rich life style." Lena chuckled brightly, a emotion that was as short lived as the glass of wine in her hand, when a voice, one she had been expecting but still dreading called her name loudly.
"Lena... darling." Lex more or less barreled through a few individuals, heading straight to Lena though his eyes came up to look at Kara before he reached her side. "Oh come now sister, etiquette should have taught you not to bring the press to a gala. How can anyone believe there is impartiality in Catco now?" He shook his head and then fixed blue eyes. "Ms. Danvers... I can't say it's a surprise."
"Good Evening Lex." Almost as she'd heard Lena say a million times when necessary, Kara forced a slim fake smile onto her face and addressed him almost before Lena could gulp down the sip of wine she'd been working on. "And you don't have to worry I'm not here on behalf of Catco tonight, just here to enjoy the good food and good wine."
"Oh so you're Lena's plus one." Eyes went back to look at Lena, who has stayed unusually quiet. "That's quite a statement to make sister dear, with a new company to hock. There are old prejudices when it comes to money."
"Oh don't I know that." Lena's face slipped into a small smile. "Which is exactly why I brought my girlfriend with me." She let the word echo loudly around them before continuing. "As I embrace their prejudice and then reject their money."
"Besides if you read Catco as much as you put it down, you'd know that LGBT2Q+ positive companies are seeing a nearly 10% quarterly earnings boost due to the increased investment by both those in the community and allies to the community." Kara added in purposefully reaching down to slip her hand into Lena's and interlink their fingers.
"There is a 10% boost Miss Danvers because there is 10% more of them." Lex straightened his shoulder. "And I shouldn't be surprised by this move from you Lena, you revel in bringing disgrace to your last name."
"Nice try Lex." Lena shook her head. "But do you really think my last name even comes to my mind when Kara and I are having sex?"
"Lena..." Kara's repetition of her name wasn't a tone of admonishment as maybe the brunette would have expected. "He's still your brother, I'm sure he has as much interest in what we do in bed as Alex does." She shot a wink at Lex on purpose, enjoying the double torture they were making him endure as Lena's lack of concern seemed to be making him lock his jaw more then normal and the vein on the side of his head definitely proved Kara's point had struck home as he couldn't think of anything but that now.
Unfortunately it just but a moment for him to overcome this 'embarrassment' and when he did he stepped in a little close to Lena with a whisper.
"Actually I am rather interested..." There was a leer in his tone. "Wanted to do the one thing I hadn't with one did you?"
"One thing?" Lena just let the side of her mouth curl up into a smile. "Oh Lex is there really any wonder why you didn't get all you wanted." She shook her a little. "Why beat someone into submission when you can simply ask to be top that night?"
This made Lex lean back to straight almost as if Lena had been around him to whack him on the ass. His face pursed up as sour as Kara had ever seen the unlikable villain.
"Oh and just to make sure it's been said, my cousin is an ally but very straight." Kara smirked at him giving Lena's hand a soft squeeze.
"I have business to deal with here, I'm not interested in some bantering small talk with people who I don't consider important." Lex huffed and pulled down his suit jacket, taking a breath to turn around.
"Oh Lex..." Lena called out stepping a little closer to Kara to put herself in front of the blonde, leaning back a little so she rested lightly against her. "Keep next summer open... there's probably a date in there that you won't want to miss."
"You're bad but I love it." Kara released Lena's hand but only so that she could slip them both around Lena encouraging the lean as she whispered the words to just the brunette. "Oh he almost killed that old woman..." She made a noise of discomfort as Lex did indeed almost go right over an elderly attendee and then had to make a quick apology before he kept stalking off. The result of the entire altercation being a good twenty people looking at Lex with disapproving looks as he moved and not one single, even glance of displeasure at the two of them.
"He deserved it and worse." There was no trace of regret in Lena's voice, in fact the young woman sounded almost proud of herself for what had just transpired. "I'm sorry though I should have asked before I did that." She lightly patted the hands around in apology. "It's just that opportunities like that are hard to plan."
"I encouraged it." Kara reminded her giving her the immediate reassurance. "Though I do hope you'll ask before I find myself at a wedding." She teased softly.
"Oh I think there would be more than just one question were that to happen." Lena laughed again. "And you'd have to find me from where you sister buried me."
"You have Alex wrapped around your little finger, you do all her suit upgrades." Kara laughed even more.
The two of them were still leaned together, enjoying the sense of closeness without questioning it as the run in with Lex was still too fresh in their minds, when suddenly a slightly deeply toned female voice could be heard as a tall brunette walked up towards them from the left side just out of Kara's view where she was tucked.
"Well Miss. Luthor, that is the best attack on your brother I have seen since you dumped a goldfish on his head at the Darnby Summer Fair." Cameron Kingsborough, who Lena would probably need a moment to remember, was no longer the lanky dowdy girl she had gone to private school with for so many years. Unlike the two of them, she was dressed in a tailored Armani tuxedo and shiny black Gucci boots.
"Cameron?" Lena frowned slightly as she let green eyes linger on the newcomer, widening them a little when a small nod of confirmation came from her. "Cameron what are you doing here?" She patted Kara's hand again but then pulled away to get closer to the newcomer, hugging her briefly before they kissed at both cheeks in a very fluid European greeting. "In National City, at the biggest business gala we have..." Lena was a whirlwind of questions. "Please don't tell me you have a husband in here trying to garner money."
"You really don't keep up on the news from Europe do you?" Cameron had to give a soft laugh as she smiled back. "I do not have a husband, I am here because of the gala actually, because I recently took over the North American holding of Father's company. You're looking at the Western Hemispheric CEO of Kingsborough Inc."
"Oh my God did he die?" Lena blinked wide green eyes at the brunette, not wishing any ill will with the words, but Alfred Kingsborough had barely seemed to like his daughter when she'd know him, let alone share any of the company with her, except maybe forcing her off to marry a new up and comer so the business grew even more.
"You remember." Cameron gave another laugh. "Yes, he dropped dead of a heart attack shagging his mistress in Venice, Mother ended up with the whole company and of course didn't have a clue how to run any of it because he never told her, just added her name to everything for the write off and so..." She motioned to herself with a soft wave. "We've had a remarkable growth in the new markets here."
"But what about Teddy?" Lena crunched her nose slightly. "Like me you suffered being the youngest and only girl." She reminded the brunette of the things they shared in common, things that in the past had pulled them together.
"Teddy blew so much Colombian white up his nose before the end even Father begrudgingly said I was the favourite." Cameron gave another laugh. "God, you look amazing Lena. Really, I've seen some of the articles and kept up on the comings and goings but... really, stunning as always."
Lena posed a little, a brilliant smile on her face before she glanced back at Kara.
"And this must by your equally beautiful partner." Cameron caught up quickly and offered her hand to Kara. "I have to admit I did know who you were Ms. Danvers, my PA included you in my people I should keep on my good side here in National City."
"It's nearly impossible to get on Kara's bad side." Lena said brightly as she put her hand onto Kara's shoulder almost as a small nudge to her to shake the offered hand. "She's the most... stunning person I know." She summed up with a smile to the two of them. "This is Cameron Kingsborough, we went to school together."
"It's a real pleasure to meet you, I hardly get to meet Lena's school friends, they're usually all over the world living such wonderful lives." Kara had finished with the hand shake and kept the polite smile on her face, even though a part of her wanted to drift closer to Lena, who might apparently be her 'fake' girlfriend but the other brunette looked a little like a European fashion model in her own right.
"But I thought Andrea was over here now?" Cameron frowned softly and looked at Lena.
"She is but..." Lena shook her head. "You know Andrea..." She rolled her eyes slightly. "With all that her company has been through in the last year, she doesn't have much time to play catch up." She reasoned away the 'issue' with the other woman. "Oh and so you know, dear Kara was just being a good sport earlier, we're not dating." The 'Lena' smile was back again. "I couldn't do that to someone as good as Kara."
"Oh." Cameron seemed genuinely surprised as she looked between the two of them. "Great way to get under his skin then." She gave a soft smile. "Teddy tried to sink me with Father after he caught me with a woman in Greece but he seemed to forget Father already had been told by his spies that I was the black sheep." She brightened her smile a little.
"Darling you stole that boy's girlfriend when you were only fifteen years old." Lena pointed out laughing. "I don't think any one was in any way surprised you were on your knees worship a Grecian goddess."
"But you know Teddy, always a bit... slow." Cameron shared another laugh with Lena. "My brother Theodore actually believed once upon a time he would marry Lena, Kara." She looked to the blonde with a smirk. "He had the entire school's boys choir sing under her window one night and do you know what she did..." She waited and Kara gave a soft shrug for her to continue. "She released a fire extinguisher down on the lot of them. It was magnificent."
"You did?" Kara's blue eyes went wide.
"I did." Lena laughed brightly. "And it was one of the foam ones, created a total mess." She snickered more. "No one was hurt but I had to pay for a replacement." She gave a shrug. "Worth every dollar."
"Speaking of dollars..." Cameron put on a more serious face. "We have to do lunch, brunch, dinner, whatever you'll allow me to take you to and put aside five or ten minutes to talk business, serious business, if you'll even entertain such a lowly company as Kingsborough."
"Well I'd love to put aside some time for you." Lena made no hesitation with her words. "Why don't I take your number... you can have mine and then I'll call within the week." She offered. "And if I don't call by Friday you can hound me down." She chuckled again and made the move to take her phone out of her small clutch.
"And you know I will." Cameron added as a playful warning slipping her own phone out and within moments the numbers were exchanged. "Now, I must get back to getting side eye from the old man's ex golf buddies, but this has been the highlight of my night..." She moved closer and gave Lena a kiss on both cheeks a second time. "Ravishing as always." She added before moving to repeat the move with Kara who tried to roll with it though she hadn't been expecting it. "I promise if you think anything Kingsborough is doing is worth writing about get Lena to give you my number, I'll take your call." She winked and then seemed to disappear off into the crowd.
Lena watched the brunette walk away before she took a step back to bring her to Kara's side.
"You might think about getting that number, the Kingsborough lineage is an important one in old money circles." She prompted the blonde. "But..." Green eyes lingered on the other brunette before she disappeared into the crowd before turning to look at the blonde. "Watch her." She added the soft warning. "She's lovable, charming and intelligent." She offered the qualities. "But she's a rogue, and a complete... I won't say whore but... you know what I'm alluding to." She paused. "Faithfulness and commitment are dirty words to her."
"Don't fall for the flattery, right." Kara nodded that she was getting the message.
"Oh no you can fall for the flattery, just don't fall for the small talk that happens when you're in bed." Lena corrected the blonde softly.
"How old where you when you two went to school together?" Kara's eyes seemed to follow behind the ghost of the other woman now as the question was out before she could edit herself, the almost hidden question of 'because did you fall for it' was just beyond the spoken.
"All the way from age 9 until 18." Lena replied with a soft nod and a smile.
"Did you two ever date?" Kara finally just asked the question turning back to look at Lena. "It's obvious you were good friends back then from just the stories she alluded too."
"Kara Danvers where did that question come from?" Lena blinked green eyes at her. "What happened to my naive and polite friend who never probes into personal lives?"
For a moment Kara just stood there and paled a little realizing how indeed pushy the question was, and even though it was the kind she would ask Nia in a heartbeat it wasn't the kind she usually asked Lena.
"Sorry..." Kara immediately apologized and looked down softly.
"Kara... it's okay." Lena moved right beside the blonde and lightly put her hand against her arm. "I'm just not used to facing that kind of question from you." She shook her head a little. "And I don't have a problem answering it. Not like I would have a year or so ago." She flicked her eyebrows up a little with a smile. "Cameron was very good to me after Andrea broke my heart."
At first all Kara gave was a nod as her blue eyes had come up again to meet green when Lena's hand had landed on her arm.
"She seemed relieved that we weren't really dating." Kara observed with a soft smile.
"That's probably because you're just her type." Lena teased the blonde softly. "Don't worry I'll set her straight when we meet for lunch. I won't have one of my old friends make my best friend uncomfortable." She vowed softly. "And Kara, about what I just said..." She took a small breath. "Andrea and I... we dated in school but..." She paused. "At the junior prom, in our second to last year she publicly dumped me, told everyone I was gay and she fucked Teddy Kingsborough in the locker room." The brunette let out a sigh. "It wasn't a great time for me."
"I'm so sorry Lena, I never knew she'd been that cruel to you." Kara didn't stop herself from moving to put her hand on Lena's arm in turn rubbing the bare skin softly.
"Yes," Lena frowned. "I'm sure you can imagine it but even as 'closed off' as I was then, for Andrea to get up on the stage during junior prom and announce to the whole school that I wished I had been born with a dick." She winced as she recalled the brutal details. "It made my slide into weird recluse a whole lot easier."
"And Cameron... I hope she at least stood up for you." Kara rubbed more trying to soothe the aches of the past somehow with the movement.
"She broke Andrea's nose." Lena began to reminisce. "Told her brother that Andrea was carrying herpes and maybe crabs and a couple of other things that were a little... too much." She breathed out. "And we... gravitated towards one another after that. Though we both knew that our futures were very different, I was heading to MIT, Cameron didn't even want to think about further education." She chuckled. "A year backpacking in Australia was her main goal." She chuckled again as old conversation came back clearly to her suddenly. "I think what I mean is that it wasn't ever love." She smiled a little sadly this time. "But it was good."
"I'm glad for that at least." Kara smiled softly at her. "And thank you for sharing it with me." She added her voice lowered for just the brunette. "I know how hard it is to share unhappy stories, I have a million from Midvale if you ever want to hear them but none are that exciting really."
"Actually it was hard when..." Lena paused. "Half way through our..." She paused again obviously trying to settle on a word that adequately named all that had gone on between the two of them when Kara's secret had been revealed. "Intermission." She offered up the delicate word. "Andrea asked me to forgive her and asked if I would have her back."
"Oh." Kara blinked a bit surprised by this, after all Andrea didn't come across at the type of woman who came back to ask forgiveness for most anything. "Did you?"
Lena's laugh this time was brittle.
"Kara, I drank a bottle of scotch every night, cried when I wasn't shouting and locked myself away in my lab... I wasn't into dating." She gave a solid shake of her head.
"Dating was a hard thing to think about with the..." Kara frowned as the memories of the horrible time between them came to the surface again. "Intermission." She used Lena's word. "Though, I'm glad you didn't. You deserve someone far better than Andrea."
"Well that I'm not sure about that but I am glad it didn't happen a second time. I don't think her sway would have led to the outcome we got." She made the admission softly smiling at Kara, knowing in her heart she wouldn't have wanted anything to obstruct them getting to where they were now in their rekindled friendship.
"For the record... again... thank you for giving us a second act." Kara underlined her voice tender and honest. "I honestly couldn't even imagine a world where you and I were always going to be... in intermission." She tried to use the new word to sum up the horrible possibilities that had been stretched out before her like a threat.
"It would have been terrible." Lena confirmed with a nod. "But now all that is a thing of the past. I have my best friend back." She moved and hugged into Kara's side. "My charades partner, my trivia goddess..." She lowered her voice to a whisper. "My hero."
"You're all those things to me too..." Kara moved her arm around Lena pulling her in as close as she could. "Especially the last one." She whispered back before not thinking to stop herself as she turned and pressed a kiss to the side of Lena's head. "Now, who else do you need to schmooze at this shin-ding?" She happily refocused them knowing that too much more extended emotional time would probably burn Lena out too much.

"Wakey, wakey, Miss. Sunshine."
Kara wasn't necessarily tired, but she liked to sleep in on Saturdays and since she'd been up very late with the gala and Lena the night before, the limo dropping her off somewhere just after three, the fact that her sister was bouncing on the edge of the bed at... nine am... the clock on the side table told her when she opened her eyes was a bit of a surprise.
"And before you make one tiny, itty bitty tiny grumble... remember the only reason I am here is because I FOUND OUT FROM THE PAPERS!" Alex's voice got louder as suddenly news sheet covered Kara's head.
"Found out what..." Kara flicked her hands up to try and bat at the falling papers. "In what?" She grumbled pulling back to sit against the headboard.
"All this time my poor little gay heart has been sitting on the sidelines silently routing for you too, told by Kelly not to interfere, hell even told by Maggie not to interfere, she had to figure it out for herself, one of them has to make the move... blah blah blah... while you fawn over each other, sit on each other, gaze at each other, fight like you're already married with each other... and after all that time of being on YOUR team, silently doing whatever I could to will it to happen... you don't even tell me?" By the end of her rant Alex's voice showed her slight actual hurt at what she was revealing.
"Alex, it's nine o'clock on a Saturday, how much coffee have you drunk?" Kara's brow furrowed even more. "What are you talking about your poor gay heart, and who fawning over who? Oh God has Kelly dumped you?"
"NO!" Alex bit back at the idea with a scowl. "Page three... you made page three Kara!" She moved to pull the loose papers from her sister's grip and flip them open to reveal the full page spread under the headline... 'Luthor Heir Dating Journalistic Up and Comer, Kara Danvers'... under which there were no less then five pictures of them cuddling, hugging and one with Kara pressing a kiss to Lena's temple.
"NO!" It was Kara's turn to make the noise this time as she snatched the pages and pulled them closer to her face, not that she needed to, she had perfect vision, literally. "This isn't... where did this come from... Did you print these yourself." She looked at the brunette in an accusatory way.
"Print them myself?" Alex looked at her in shock. "Kara... The National City Tribune..." She pointed to the name at the top of the paper she had been holding. "The Daily Planet... The New York Times..." She moved back to the end of the bed and lightly pushed up the small pile of papers towards the blonde. "I had to slip past three paparazzi in front of your place, they're waiting for you out there like lions at the watering hole."
"Oh Rao no." Kara dropped the papers and pressed her hands to her temples. "You have to fix this." She looked up into dark eyes. "Make them go away... I need to call Lena."
"Whoa, no... I need you to tell me why you didn't tell me? Why didn't I get to share in the joy before the whole world got to know?" Alex plopped herself down on her sister's lower legs knowing it wouldn't hurt. "You don't think I'd have been happy for you?"
"Of course I think you'd be..." Kara stopped and tipped her head slightly to look at the brunette. "You'd be happy if I were gay?"
"Yes." Alex looked at her almost shocked. "And more than that, you gay and with the clear love of your life... ecstatic Kara! I would be ecstatic, I know Luthor's had some low points in the past but... she's made up for that, and I understand how she works better now and more than that, I know that nothing in this world means more to her then you do."
"Love of my life?" Kara blinked and shook her head. "Oh no... no no no." She picked up the papers again holding them aloft. "The reason I didn't tell you first is because all of this..." She waved them a little more. "Is a lie." She blinked. "Made up, fake..." She added a few more terms. "Lena told Lex we were dating to piss him off." She stressed to the point were her voice cracked. "Some of the press must have heard her." She sagged a little. "Oh Rao." The words came out a sigh as she looked at the pictures for a moment. "Look at this..." She pointed to the one of her kissing Lena's head. "What have I done?"
"So the whole gossip that you're getting married next summer?" Alex arched one eyebrow high now a little confused.
"Lena's parting shot to her brother." Kara nodded. "Which worked by the way, he was soooo unhappy, nearly killed an old grandma to get away from us."
Alex leaned back across the bed and took a few breaths of her own.
"First, ignore everything I just said..." She took a slow breath. "Second, I don't know how we fix this."
"Me either." Kara frowned and then pressed up and out of the bed walking through into the main room. "Did it reach the TV?" She asked picking up the remote and turning it on only to be immediately face with a different shot of the two of them, this one on the dance floor. "Rao." She hissed turning away from the screen. "I need to call Lena." She moved toward the table where her phone was. "Why hasn't she called me already?" The blonde paused as she switched on her phone, to be met with a chorus of notification chimes. "What the hell?" She blinked at her phone as the noises didn't stop in the usual one or two seconds but just kept on coming. "68 messages?" She looked at Alex and then at the phone. "Two from Cat Grant?" She breathed out. "Oh fiddle, three from Lena... ugh five from Eliza?" She looked again at her sister. "Even Sam?" She groaned. "I'm gonna call Lena."
The blonde was about to dial the brunette's number when Lena's voice seemed to fill the room, indeed it did really as it was coming from the TV. The pictured brunette was dressed in an expensive running suit, had obviously been caught on her morning run and looking more than a little side swiped and confused had at least five microphones were pushed under her nose.
The commentator from the network was giving a narration to the scene which made Kara's body tense slightly.
"In relation to the question of how she felt about Miss. Danvers, the CEO was clear..." The camera view went back to Lena's ambushed form.
"I love her dearly, she's my best friend in the world, in fact if I didn't have her I'm not sure you'd be able to be holding this... interview." She tried to give a commanding Lena smile and pulled herself up straight as questions continued to be barked at her the minute she'd finished talking.
"Alex... what do I do?" Kara called back to her sister.
"Um... well... okay..." Alex was now up off the bed and moved over towards the television looking out the window behind it. "Make that a dozen paparazzi and the local news channel's live on the scene anchor ."
Suddenly the phone in Kara's hand's started ringing and seeing it was Nia, the blonde didn't think before she hit accept.
"I am SO mad no one told me but I AM SO HAPPY!" Nia's voice was coming through the phone before Kara could say hello. "Though you should have warned all of us... and given me an exclusive... just kidding, not really but you know you taught me to be direct about interviews..."
"Er... thanks." Kara replied with a shrug towards her sister who looked at her with 'what the fuck' written on her face. "And sorry to make you mad."
"You two so look like you didn't know anyone was watching you at that party." Nia giggled on her end of the phone. "Oh by the way expect Andrea to be calling, she does not want you giving Cat Grant an exclusive for Time magazine, even if she claims she can get Annie Leibovitz to take the photos. I say screw Andrea, go with anyone who gets you Annie Leibovitz, can I be on set? Pretty please."
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves Nia." Kara offered trying to focus. "It's just a slow day, that's the only reason it's gone so... crazy."
"Yeah right, Lena Luthor and Kara Danvers are dating is going to be headline news in National City for weeks!" Nia reassured her. "And they don't even know the secret part." She seemed to whisper the words even though she hadn't said anything.
"Nia, I'm burning the pancakes... she'll call you back." Alex moved over and hit end on the call and looked at Kara. "No speaking of the thing, even making hints at the thing, we don't know if they're trying to tap your calls."
"Tap my calls?" Kara squeaked. "Rao I feel sick." She began to pace. "I never feel sick." She countered with a shake of her head. "I need to talk to Lena." She offered the mantra again.
"You actually going to do that, rather than just talk about it?" Alex arched her eyebrows at her sister.
"Trying to forget all of that..." She pointed towards the television, then out the window, then at her phone and then at the papers. "For a tiny minute... why did you call her the love of my life?" She stared blankly at her sister.
"To much caffeine and not enough information." Alex fobbed her off. "Along with most of the other stuff I said. You need to focus on the mess this little 'lie' has created."
"Alex, don't do that... not right now... you came in here with a laundry list of things your little gay heart had been collecting..." Kara stared at her sister and then crossed her arms over her body. "Were you lying and just trying to act happy in case Lena and I were dating suddenly?"
"Kara I was just reacting to..." Alex stopped when there came a sudden knock on the front door. Dropping into silence the redhead just looked at Kara.
"Oh Rao." Kara said the words again as she crossed to the door and peeped through it using her x-ray vision to see it was her neighbor Mrs. Thurston. "Morning Mrs. Thurston..." She pulled open the door hoping the woman's sink wasn't clogged again, or she'd forgotten how to turn the remote to the right setting for it to work with her hearing aids, all things Kara had helped with in the past.
"I see her and then I know..." The old woman looked at Kara with a smile and shuffled sideways to reveal Lena, in a long dark coat, aviators, and a black hoodie covering her hair. "I let her up the fire escape." The old woman looked at Kara with a grin. "Go make your girl a cup of tea." She pointed Lena in as she stepped back. "Now I do not have to worry about the comings and the goings." She grinned more and slipped away.
"Speaking of goings, I'm going to go and well... yeah..." Alex slinked off towards the door and was out of it and closing it behind her before anyone could say another word.
"Lena." Kara breathed out a sigh of relief as she moved over to try and help her disassemble the heavy 'covert' outfit considering how warm it was this time of year.
"Kara I am so... so sorry." Lena moved with the blonde to quickly rid herself of everything but the shapely running suit she had on. "Tell me what to say to them to make this go away for you... do you want a horrible break up... a 'you found out I was a whore when I was a teenager'?" She frowned as she dropped the shades off onto a table. "I brought a man back with us from the gala and you were horrified?"
"NO!" Kara disagreed immediately and shook her head moving over to where Lena was moving frantically, a little too close to what she was now oh so aware of were the enormous windows in her apartment that could let anyone on the sidewalk see into certain areas. She reached down to take both of Lena's hands in her own to make her stay still. "I don't want to tell them anything that will say something bad about you, you are not... you never were a..." She found she couldn't even say the word. "I couldn't add more lies to an already tiny white one we just started to make your brother get shirty." She smiled softly. "Thank you for what you said when they cornered you this morning but..." Her face dipped a bit. "Please Lena don't tell me the part about not still being here was true because..." She shook her head solidly. "I need you."
A soft smile pulled at Lena's lips as she took in a quick breath.
"I need you too." She said softly. "Which is why it kind of was true."
"Well then now I know you're stuck with me forever so you never have those kind of thoughts." Kara didn't even hesitate leaning forward to hug her tightly considering how her morning had started at 11 on the dial and so far showed no signs of coming down.
Lena leaned into the hug, settling her head on its side against Kara's chest.
"This whole thing is crazy Kara." She said her voice a low whisper. "I am sorry about that." She added. "At least now you know what dating me would be like so you know to avoid it at all costs."
"Hey this isn't because of you, this is because of me being an up and comer journalist." Kara gave her a soft squeeze. "Now you know you'd never want the hassle of dating me." She turned the comment around. "And the truth is no matter what they are all doing out there, I would push through ten times the paparazzi to be with you."
"You've always been and all ways will be so kind Kara." Lena smiled tenderly at the blonde. "As if to underline the point. I had a text from Cameron this morning offering to silence everyone and tell the that her and I are dating instead."
"How about no?" Kara didn't know why but she immediately objected, though in her mind she did know why. The sheer threat of the debonair, rich and historically associated Cameron coming in to take up all of Lena's time made her panic inside. "That's just making this even more complicated." She let out a soft breath. "I guess the only option is we have to start planning a wedding for next summer." She tried the soft joke to see if she could make Lena smile.
"Don't even play along like that Kara, I know this must be so hard for you." Lena pulled away now shaking her head. "All your family and your friends must be blown away." She sighed a little harder.
"Actually..." Kara had to smile softly. "Alex burst in here to wake me up and honestly the only thing she was upset about was that I didn't tell her first. She actually had a whole speech about us and how happy she was." She filled in the details hoping to at least make Lena see how no one was seeing this as a negative. "Nia managed to call in and again the only thing she was mad about was not getting told and the exclusive on the reveal to make her career." She let her smile grow a little. "Even Cat texted me because and I quote... 'I'm glad you two finally worked out your tension'. She wants to get us for an exclusive time interview with pictures by Annie Leibovitz."
Lena exhaled and rolled her eyes up to the ceiling.
"That's almost as bad as the Daily Planet have a quote from my brother in it wishing us both happiness and a family."
"Yeah, for your brother..." Kara had to admit that one had caught her off guard a little, even for him to 'fake' that was huge.
"My text from James wasn't as... poetic." The brunette frowned.
"What did he say? He should know better then to be rude or mean, you two broke up ages ago, you have a right to move on with whoever you please." Kara moved closer to her again.
Lena pulled her phone out of the suit and found the text not wanting to actually give voice to it.
'Remember she was mine first!'
"What?" Kara looked down at it in shock. "That is... so misogynist." She growled softly as she looked back up at Lena's. "I was never his, we only half kissed before he became a brain washed robot during Myriad... and... that was just horrible, I'll text him back and tell him off." She said the words that were the equivalent of a Kara Danvers' tirade.
"Andrea's was worse." Lena took the phone and flicked to the next message.
'Really Lena? A hick from Mid-Dale? You always did like it rough'
Kara's anger grew another notch and she held her finger in the air for a moment.
"I am going to have a closed door meeting with that... girl... and inform her it is Midvale and whatever you do or don't like it will never ever again have anything to do with her, and that I hope she cleared up the herpes." Kara lifted her chin in the air.
"I saved the best for last." Lena sighed and flicked the screen again.
'You really are your mother's daughter, and she was a whore.'
"You know I hate Lillian anyway right?" Kara checked and saw Lena give a quick nod. "But to bring your mother into it..." Her jaw clenched even more. "The only reason she wrote any of that is because of how bitter she is that your father found someone younger, prettier and who was far more beautiful to be around then she ever was for even half a minute under dental gas." She nodded to her own point. "And I want to underline..." She reached up to put her hand on Lena's arm. "If we were together, all of them are just jealous that they know they would never have someone to love them as much as we love each other. Except maybe Lillian but I'm not sure she knows what love it to begin with."
"Have you ever wondered what would happen if we did..." Lena let her voice peter off for a moment. "I mean I know so much would have to be different but..." She blinked as she looked up at the blonde.
"Only a few things would be different, wouldn't they?" Kara blinked back at her but her head was nodding to confirm that she had 'wondered' about it. "None of the basics would change, we would still be best friends, still trust each other and be there to be cheerleaders for each other every day..." She licked her lips without thinking. "You're so amazing Lena..." She added softly.
"The biggest basic would have to change Kara." Lena lost herself in blue as she looked up. "Chemistry... sexual chemistry... that would change.. well no, that would be necessary." She spoke softly. "For example, how do you feel when I ask the question... What would happen if we kissed?"
The simple fact of Lena actually speaking about it, boiling it down to the idea of them kissing sent her head into a whirlwind of moments when if she was honest it had seemed like they had 'almost' kissed before. Seeing green eyes staring so deeply into her, searching for the answer to a question behind the question made her sister's jarring speech from the morning come back to her. Maybe that's what they'd been ignoring all along, the chemistry, the sexual chemistry that already existed between them.
Deciding not to actually verbalize an answer, Kara began to lean closer to the brunette, specifically with the slow intention of kissing her but tentatively giving Lena all the time in the world to side step her if she hadn't intended this with her question.
Lena however didn't side step at all, she just kept her eyes on Kara as she leaned in, only breaking the focus when eyelids dipped closed as the soft warmth of Kara's lips grazed over hers.
That moment however was literally shattered by a bright white flare off the back wall behind them followed by another and then another, making Lena literally jump backwards.
"You people are creepy!" Kara barked at the window that she thought the light had come through and began to move to pull across one and then another of the curtains.
Unbelievably the call of...
"THIS WAY MS. DANVERS!" Came from a loud speaker across in the next apartment before more flares of photographs being taken blinded her slightly.
Looking across to match eyes with the photographer not because she was following his instruction but to glare at him, Kara moved to abandon the curtain and instead moved back to take Lena's hand and gently lead her back through the bedroom and into the bathroom.
"There are no windows in here." Kara pointed out wanting to explain why she'd done what she'd done before pressing off from the door she'd closed with her back, she moved softly to press her lips to Lena's again not wanting to lose the incredible feeling of finally kissing the brunette after all this time.

"No way!"
A loud call of descent came from one of the two older Kent teenagers, sat at the back behind the small crowd of younger children what were in the long grass sitting in a semi-circle around Kara. To the call the blonde stopped her story and then tipped her head back and laughed. Behind her Lena was walking across the grass of the Kent Farm from the busy picnic BBQ area, towards were Kara had gathered the youngsters for the story while the food was being readied for their meal. The brunette was carrying with care an infant with bright messy blonde hair.
"It's all true sweetheart." Lena said kindly as she came up behind the boy who had made the claim, smoothing her hand over straight dark hair, the move creating a bright smile on the youngest Kent's face as he immediately moved his hand up to mess up his 'perfect' hair again. "Your Aunt Kara and I were slow starters." She looked then at Kara with a broad and warm smile.
"I fink it's bootiful." A petite girl with dark eyes and long, long reddish hair was laid out in the semicircle, her hands supporting her chin as her small elbows kept them aloft. "My mommies don't luv each other haf that much."
"Hey now that's not true..." Kara shook her head as she reached up and took the infant from her wife's arms when Lena had walked close enough to her. "But it is a story for a different day." She looked happily at the collection of children knowing each one of them was a miracle among her friends and families that she cherished more then she'd even thought possible. As the baby in her arms cooed softly and Lena's head came to rest on her shoulder and fuss with the lie of the light summer blanket, Kara knew that everything in her life was perfect.
The End...
