This is really written as a snapshot of one meant to be incredibly cute fic of tooth rotting fluff.
Date Three
by: Rainbow Writers
As Kara landed in a familiar alley nearby to the gang's go to Alien bar, she continued to try and relax her shoulders and get in the mood for a 'Superfriends' group night out drinking, playing darts and getting up to their usual shenanigans. It wasn't that there was any friction with any member of the Superfriends at the moment, as there could often momentarily be when they were in the middle of a 'crisis' and everyone was trying to find the right path. It was just that up until six hours before when Alex had sent the text literally ordering everyone to be at the bar by nine thirty in their group chat Kara had been excited about a totally different evening.
Any attempt she would have made to bow out had been harpooned by circumstance. She had been in a meeting at the exact moment Alex's announcement had landed, meaning in her absence everyone had decided it was the best idea in the world, and pre-emptively decided that Kara couldn't possibly have any alternative plans.
Problem was, she had. She had a very important third date planned in fact, not that any of Superfriends were in on the important news that she was in a new relationship. Well one was, but as Lena Luthor was the person she was going on said date with, well she'd have to know. They had both been waiting for the booked Friday night chance to spend time together all week.
Date one had been, well a beautiful disaster. They had barely gotten over their nervous energy and were half way through their starter at a perfect restaurant, all Lena's doing, when the world had sifted sideways. Literally, as an unexpected earthquake had suddenly shuddered through National City.
Along with the general chaos and anarchy that the earthquake itself had caused, the equivalent of Godzilla's cousin had emerged at the same time in National City harbour. Anyone could fill the rest of their evening in without stretching their imagination.
Date two, had been a little better. They'd actually made it to dessert at the trendy fusion bistro that Kara had chosen, everything about date two had been a little lower key, but the disaster had been the similar. Though this time it had been Lena's security team contacting her to advise her of a breech at one of L-Corp facilities in the city, and of course Kara being Kara had tagged along and complications had soon devolved the situation into something almost the same as Date One, minus the giant lizard.
Tonight was supposed to be date three, carefully crafted so that they were going to stay in at Kara's, enjoy take out and pray that nothing in the world decided to try to end it before they watched a movie and got to at least cuddle on the couch. They'd cuddled more before they'd actually admitted they liked each other then they'd managed since, and this fact was what was causing the unfamiliar itch under Kara's skin.
As the week had marched on, all she had wanted was the chance to just spend a few hours sharing space with Lena. This desire was the background music of her brain as she pulled open the door to the bar and was met immediately by the classic loud Friday night music. Taking a deep breath, Kara scanned the busy bar and quickly spotted her group.
By the time she reached the table she'd managed to secure her 'fun, excited' self in place and wasn't surprised to see that Winn and James were the first ones there with J'onn and were already enjoying something to eat.
"Where is the party planner? I thought I was going to get told off for being late." Kara questioned as she arrived at the end of the table and began to take off her coat and hang it on the nearby rack.
"She's helping Sam get ready." Winn said with a little eye roll in Kara's direction. "Like we don't know what that's code for."
"What is that code for?" Kara asked in perfect deadpan as she finalized the quick order of a club soda with the waitress as she went by in the crowd. James barked out a laugh as Winn reddened a little, opening his mouth to answer, but closing it several times before actually saying anything.
"It means that Alex enjoys time with Ruby, so the two of them might be a little late, it's easy to get caught up in teenage mischief." J'onn offered with a smile and a nod of his head to Kara. "Have you heard from Lena?" He asked of the blonde.
"Yeah she's been a no show on text chat." Winn prompted, also focusing on the blonde.
"I called in a favour, so she will be slumming it with us this evening." Kara grinned but tried to keep her enthusiasm to a normal level. "And wait..." She looked back at Winn. "Are you suggesting that Alex is trying to hit on Sam? Because... I love my sister but..." She blinked fast. "Sam is a little of a wish upon star for Alex isn't she?" In a classic Kara overcompensation moment, the fact that she'd had coffee with her sister the day before and had been forced to listen to nearly ten non stop minutes of Alex talking about Sam, was almost on the tip of her tongue but she tried to keep Alex's confidence.
Alex had suddenly appeared at the coffee shop in a flourish and was already talking before Kara could get out much of a greeting. The redhead had first admitted she was attracted to Sam, then lamented all the reasons any relationship was doomed before it started, adding in a full two minute rant on how awesome Ruby was and then another two minutes on how great Sam was for being the women she'd chose to be at fourteen. When the redhead had literally dashed out the door again after their drink because of an appointment, Kara had been left feeling wind swept by the experience.
"Everyone's gotta have wishes." Jame said still wearing his bright smile as he gave a soft shrug towards Kara.
"One of mine is to gather my own moon dirt." Winn smiled, as if unaware just how 'weird' that made him sound.
"What are we talking about?" Lena's voice came from a few feet behind the blonde suddenly, as pressed towards the group through the busy bar. As the table turned to look at the sound of her voice the crowd seemed to take its cue and part to show the stylish brunette in that first moment glory due to a supermodel like Lena Luthor. She was wearing a skin tight pair of leather pants, that clung to her second skin. She was also wearing a killer red heel and a black leather biker jacket, still zipped up. Her hair neatly up in princess braids, that were then woven into warrior ones that finally criss-crossed the back of her head. The shade of gloss on her lips matching perfectly the 7 inch heels that she tip tapped to a stop next to Kara as she reached the table.
"Lena!" Kara couldn't help the fact she literally jumped when she heard the brunette's voice, even if she had picked up indicators with her super powers that Lena had arrived she had purposefully turned to give the brunette her entrance. "Dreams..." She threw her arms out immediately and moved to give her a hug.
"Wishes actually..." Winn said still opening and closing his mouth a little in shock as he looked at the brunette. "I... is that how you always dress to go to a bar?"
"Am I slumming it and totally derailing the group aesthetic?" Lena reached and unzipped the biker jacket to reveal a button less open v-neck red satin blouse with a preacher collar having already stepped back from hugging the blonde in greeting, remembering not to hold on too long.
Everyone seemed to look at each other for a moment to check whether they all made a group consensus that she was joking or not.
"Totally bringing us all down." James laughed again and pushed up the sleeves on the petrol blue Tommy Hilfiger Sweater he was wearing.
"Our group aesthetic is going to have to be worked on in group chat." Kara added with a soft sideways glance at Lena before she finally laughed. "Oh please, you look fantastic, you know you do." She added with a shy smile.
"The whole bar knows she does." Winn coughed, covering his mouth with his hand as he said the words.
"Anyway, you need to weigh in on whether you think that my sister is trying to sweet talk your L-Corp replacement or not?" Kara refocused them away from how stunning Lena was and how every single person there had stopped to stare at her. To the point Kara now wanted to warn certain individuals off getting ideas of approaching the brunette.
"Same, only won't ask your sister out because she's worried Ruby will scare her off, and by that I don't mean Ruby herself, because let's face it the kid's adorable, I mean just the idea of insta family." Lena offered what she knew to be true.
"But Insta family is... perfect in my sister's eyes. Ruby is like an amazing gift with purchase, a whole other human being to have a meaningful relationship with." Kara turned softly, a little surprised if she was honest by the answer as she hadn't thought that Sam was that into her sister, but people did tell her she was horrible at judging that kind of thing all of the time.
"Almost sound like it's you that's got the plan there Kara." Winn pointed out with a laugh.
"Maggie broke my sister's heart, I just want her to be happy." Kara pointed out honestly with a soft blush. "And... Alex may have said some things, so I already know you could be right as to why they're late." She added to Winn in particular.
"Oh sorry to be the one to burst that particular bubble..." Lena held up her phone. "Alex's bike wouldn't start when they went to leave Sam's, they're getting an uber, but it's going to take a little while."
"This is why I don't try to match make, for anyone. I'm an alien." Kara joked to just the table as she reached out to steal a nacho from the boys communal plate between them.
"What's Winn's excuse then?" James laughed hard again.
"Hey, hey I have dates... well I have had dates." Winn lost a little of his confidence.
"You're a stevedore for sure." Lena winked at him causing the young man to blush again. "Let's just face it, we're a bunch of single people, all desperate to get it on." She fluttered her eyelashes and looked at Kara. "This darts match I was meaning." She added pointing over to the two vacant boards, and Kara found herself catching up to laugh as both men did so immediately.
-x-
"You... are enjoying this aren't you?" Kara slid up next to Lena at the bar, the first opportunity she'd naturally had to have a moment just between the two of them, well as much as you could get in a bar.
"You mean I should have told them I'm very good at darts?" Lena flashed her a smile. "Or do you mean flirting with you surreptitiously every second I get." She winked this time.
"The latter." Kara had to wet her lips with her tongue. "I don't know... if I'm equipped for this." She gave a soft laugh as she blew up into her hairline.
"If you were we could all tell in those khaki's." Lena let the words just float off her tongue.
"Okay." Kara had taken in an audible breath through her nose at the risque comment. "Two can play this game." She seemed to steel herself softly and then turn smiling at Lena.
"Oh I don't think they can?" Lena shook her head, while smiling almost hungrily at the blonde. "After all, would you ever just... lean in real close..." Lena did just that bringing her head to Kara's ear, making it look like she was just sharing a point with her friend at a noisy bar. "And say..." She pulled in a breath through her nose, making sure it was audible for the blonde. "It's okay, I pack all the accessories I need." She said the words and then with her constant charming smile eased back to sit on her stool.
Kara wanted to be witty, to turn a perfect phrase as she should have been able to but she was suddenly unsure if there was any blood in her brain and if this was what human's talked about being lightheaded meant.
"Okay, maybe I'm not ready." Kara finally made the amused admission as she moved in a little closer herself. "But I'm really enjoying it."
"I'd stop if you told me you weren't." Lena said her voice flooding with sudden sincerity.
"I know." Kara reassured her, reaching up to tuck a nonexistence hair behind Lena's ear but in her own way finally figuring out to play the game by the face that the tip of her finger traced just onto the sensitive skin. "Fly away." She added with a typical Kara move that would complete the ruse for the people packed in close around them.
"Does Lena have fleas?" It was a slightly drunk Alex that suddenly was leaning on Kara's shoulder and grinning between the two of them. "Or did I just interrupt you both dreaming about disrobing James slowly."
For a beat neither Kara or Lena said anything.
"Alex, how much have you had to drink?" Kara fretted instantly moving to support more of her sister's waist.
"Way more than I have in a little while." Alex admitted with a smug smile. "Sam and I kinda got into the booze before we left." She gave another giggle. "We're taking an uber home though so nothing to be worried about." She tipped her head onto her sister's shoulder.
"How long till it arrives? Is Sam in the bathroom?" Kara began to look around but soon spotted the tall brunette near the table they had commandeered most of the night.
"Now? Now... that is its not called or anything." She laughed as she lifted her head again. "I wanna wait till James gets drunk enough to kiss one of the two of you." She played her finger back and forth between the two woman like a pendulum.
"Let's call you that uber, because I can guarantee that is not happening." Kara reached for her phone, silently apologizing to Lena with blue eyes.
"Not if he likes that sweater it's not." Lena added to Kara's comment. "Any kissing I'd bet on Winn and... maybe James." She laughed herself, "Their shared bromance is a little..." She scrunched her nose up. "Questionable."
"Homo erotic." Alex pushed in at the same moment Lena finished. "Yeah... I know Maggie told me I see everything rainbow but... they have that thing." She tried to use her one free hand to gesticulate the undefinable trait.
"Just do me one favour Alex yes?" Lena looked at the redhead with her charming smile. "Don't ask Sam out drunk." She fluttered her eye lashes again.
"No! Of course not." Alex seemed to say the first word loudly in agreement. "Part of the reason she started pouring shots at her place was Ruby, bless her heart, I don't think she meant her statement to have the effect it had but she told us we looked like we were going on a cool date... and when Sam underlined we were all meeting up, Ruby said then knowing I'm with the babysitter, why aren't you drinking already?"
"Oh the fun of a teenager." Lena chuckled. "Can you imagine having someone that pushy along side you Kara?"
"Yeah, I can." Kara smiled softly at her. "Even if she did hint I had binge drinking issues." She gave a soft laugh. "Well that both of you do, and you both proved her right..." She rolled her eyes. "Okay Uber is ordered. Let's go round up Sam yes?"
"You're so the mom." Alex rolled her head back a little with a slight groan but still moved as Kara did back towards their table. Lena on the other hand kept her place at the bar, nursing the dry martini she had chosen to go with that night, her green eyes just watching as Kara manoeuvred Alex into her jacket and J'onn helped Sam into hers.
"Seems a nice little group to be a part of."
Lena definitely didn't expect anyone to interrupt her, she wasn't the type to give off 'bother me' vibes, but that didn't stop the over six foot tall man, dressed in a pleather sports jacket and faded denim jeans sliding up beside her and motioning for a drink from the busy bartender.
"Yes." Lena's reply was short but she spent no time looking at him, rather still focused on the group.
"You dating the dark guy?" The second question came within just seconds, making Lena out of sight briefly roll her eyes.
"No, the blonde." Now she did take the time to switch her focus, turning it finally on the man beside her to watch his ego deflate.
However that's not what happened, instead he was up on his feet the next instantly, his dark eyes literally glowering at the brunette.
"You're a fucking Dyke?" His tone was instantly loud and angry as if he'd been a lit firework long before he'd starting talking to her.
Across the room, Kara was literally handing Alex off in a second to Winn, her body already turned and moving towards the bar and in a feat that didn't technically involve using her powers, she arrived in what seemed like a half dozen quick strides.
"I think you should apologize." Kara was standing in the space to Lena's side, having to tilt her head up to look at the enormous man who had just spoken so rudely to the brunette. Her super hearing had hardly been necessary considering the scene he was making, and the whole place seemed to quite down as it seemed to some that David was trying to face off with a giant.
"I don't apologize to fucking perverts." Angry eyes glanced at Kara. "The pair of you... disgusting."
"HEY!" The yell came from Alex, who had struggled free from Winn and was already striding across the bar noisily. "That's my fucking sister you're talking to!" She bellowed at him, one finger pointing out at him to make him focus on her. The sudden rush of adrenaline in her system began to sober her quickly. "With men like you... can you blame us for picking the nicer feminine option?" She was up beside Kara now, the three women even in total not looking like a match for the large aggressor.
"What is this a fucking dyke bar?" Dark eyes flared around the room, making a lot of people uncomfortable as he tried to find any like minded individuals in the bar.
"It's definitely one that has no room for rude people, this is an accepting, welcoming type bar, maybe you should find somewhere else to drink." Kara spelled out for him, her jaw was locked as she started him down.
"Yeah I think the lady is right pal." The owner of the bar who had been working close enough to have heard the entire interaction, put down the glass in his hand and stared at the ignorant customer, not threateningly him, just even and calmly standing with Kara.
"Fuck that." Came the immediate enraged announcement, and for some reason as soon as the words had puffed through the space between them in the stand off, he'd decided to lash out his fist towards Lena. The sudden belief that violence was necessary to underline his point mapping out his belief that with the one sharp strike the brunette would probably end up on the floor away from him. Lena had settled back fully onto her stool the moment Kara had arrived, knowing the man, no matter his size, was no match for the blonde.
"Oh no." Kara already had his hand stopped in her fist before he'd gaped mid distance, and she put a hard painful squeeze on his fingers. "You were asked to leave nicely, now you are making me use my..." She did a quick throw to pin his arm behind his back, the tension almost ready to break the shoulder and began to lead him to the back door. "Self defence training from the community college."
"Leon sort that." The direction came from the bar where the owner nodded towards one of the institutions paid security guards and Kara handed over the 'rowdy' patron with ease, dusting her hands with a grin as she quickly moved back to Lena, the crowd seeming to settle back into their own affairs again. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm afraid that..." She looked over towards the open bar door, the bouncer and aggressor pressing through it despite his continued out burst about how unfair all of this was. "Comes with the territory I'm afraid to say." She summed up with a hard breath out.
"He's just a narrow minded..." Kara shook her head softly.
"Prick, he's a narrow minded prick." Alex interjected as she shook her head, picked up Lena's martini and downed it. "Bet he owns more Lesbian porn than I do."
"And now I remember I was getting Alex in an uber." Kara put her hand to her forehead lightly and sighed. "Once I get those two into an uber, should I call us one? I can see that guy, ruined the night." She added in a slightly disappointed tone.
"No, no..." It was Winn who had finally pushed his way over to them who tried to plead his case. "Don't let some Neanderthal ruin the night." He gave his bet puppy dog look to both of them. "It's nothing, just..."
Lena however raised her hand slightly and looked at Winn with a soft smile.
"I'm sorry Winn but I don't think so." She shook her head slightly and then looked at Kara. "Getting me a way home would be great when you're finished with your sister Kara." She was touched to know that the blonde had remembered that because of their intended plan for the night, she'd given her driver the night off.
"Of course." Kara gave a soft nod and exchanged a look of commiseration with Winn, but it was clear the techie understood. His disappointment that someone could be so homophobic and rude was genuine.
-x-
Kara had first gotten both her sister and Sam poured into a verified uber, and sent packing towards Sam's house in the east side of town, with Alex's expressed outline that she was sleeping on the couch because she'd promised Ruby pancakes in the morning. Some ongoing bet that Alex could make better pancakes then Sam and Kara hadn't paid much attention as her sister had tried to explain it while being loaded into her ride.
Next she had indeed arranged a drive for Lena, but had found herself with an easy decision that she was never going to let Lena go home alone. She's decided that earlier in the night before the sad encounter and she wasn't sure why on earth she'd change that idea now. If only because they needed to talk about what had happened if nothing else.
So it was as their ride share made its way through the busy nighttime traffic cross city, Kara finally broke the silence.
"I'm sorry that jerk ruined things and was rude to you, well to everyone." Kara took a soft breath and looked across the backseat to Lena.
"It was my smart mouth that started it all so... I accept your unnecessary apology." She softly smiled at the blonde.
"No matter what you said to him, it didn't warrant that." Kara disagreed immediately.
"Like you don't know what that was." Lena almost coyly lowered her look for a moment.
"I don't know why he couldn't just share my excitement hearing you tell someone that we're dating." Kara's eyes softened and she swept her hand into the empty area between them.
"Well by date three I think there should be an amount of certainty, for at least one of us." Lena pointed out, her head a little tipped to the side, and a small smile pulling onto painted lips.
"Date three is that crucial date isn't it? At least that's what every article will tell you." Kara turned to study her more, just enjoying any time she got to just look at the brunette and take her in. "I feel very certain despite the disruption it was going great."
"It was." Lena confirmed with another lightly coy look. "I..."
The brunette didn't get to say anything else as the whole car was suddenly sent sliding sideways across an intersection, all the air bags on Kara's side of the car engaging as their tires squealed against the tarmac. When the vehicle had finally come to a stop, Kara's side door was ripped open, and in the shadow of it stood the very large, very pissed off man that had recently been escorted out of the bar.
As Kara reached up and snapped off the seat belt that was holding her in place, she already for the most part had Lean pulled into her body to buffer her from the collision.
"I'm calling 911." The driver blurted out as he fiddled with his seat belt and car door at the same time.
Suddenly the entire interior of the car was lit up with the bright light of a camera flash, it flared at least four times before the interior went back to black, the shadow in the doorway receding when the flashes had stopped..
"I know who you are!" The man screamed in warning as he began backing up toward his truck that had come to stop after impact a few feet away. "The world's gonna know Luthor!" He called out the threat to the brunette in particular.
Obviously ready for immediate and intense intervention, Kara felt herself tense up, like a balloon about to pop when a soft light touch came onto her arm. After all in her world, when someone purposefully t-boned Lena Luthor's car, they were doing it to kill or kidnap her, not to take a few pictures to 'out' her.
"It's not worth it darling." Lena breathed out the words evenly as she closed her hand softly around Kara's arm. For a second Kara still felt the pull of the adrenaline in her veins from even the idea of a threat against Lena and it was only as she was able to focus on the soft stoke of the brunette's fingers over her forearm that she could re-frame what was going on. A quick assessment of her girlfriend confirmed to her worried brain that other then the slight shock of being in a car accident, Lena was in perfect health.
Before Kara could actually decided on an action, the noise from outside intensified as their attacker started shouting again.
"Whose got my fucking keys!" The sound of fists hitting the hood of the ride share car came with the accusation. The fact that a member of the crowd had been brave and quick thinking enough to remove their attackers car keys from the stopped vehicle reminded Kara why she loved National City so much. "Someone better give them back right fucking now!"
"Call 911, call J'onn." Kara urged Lena, reaching to squeeze her hand softly before she pushed out of the car. "I know you're angry, I know you're upset... but this is not going to play out the way you hoped it will." She directed her voice to the hood of the smashed car that their assailant was now kicking, the whirl of sirens in the distance made her feel a little more hopeful that this whole situation could be diffused soon.
"Who the fuck are you?" Dark eyes flashed immediately back to Kara. "You a call girl? Paid escort? You sure as hell don't look like you're not a Lezzy."
"I'm her girlfriend, she didn't lie to you." Kara stood up tall as she found the strength to say the words out loud to the growing crowd around the scene taking in the spectacle. Of course this was happening in the busy entertainment district of the city at the peak hours of a Friday night. "And no matter who she is, what you've done, what you're doing is wrong... no one is going to applaud you for this, no one is going to celebrate you."
It was probably because Kara was so caught up in trying to control the situation, trying to monitor their assailant and the surrounding crowd both for danger and in concern for their collective well being, that she didn't notice the sound of heels, slightly unsteadily pressing onto the tarmac as Lena drew up along side the blonde.
Kara quickly keyed into her presence, not because of the sudden multiple flashes of cell phone cameras, or the slight gasps that elicited from some members of the crowd as they recognized Lena Luthor, but more because of the soft, warm hand that suddenly pressed into hers.
"Surrender peacefully to the police." The brunette's voice was impressively calm considering all that had just happened. "This doesn't have to finish as messily as it started." She finished her words and then turned her head slightly to look up into blue eyes with a gentle loving smile.
It was a surreal moment for Kara, and if she was honest she'd had some surreal moments in her life. Around them now the blare of sirens from the ambulances and police units that had been called wailed in her ears, blotting out everything but Lena's voice which she was trained to just hear somehow. A part of her knew there were at least two dozen cell phones recording their every move now, and even if there was a list stuffed into the back of one of Kara's notebooks of why keeping 'them' a secret for now was the better idea, nothing in the world suddenly felt more right then the simple act of Lena holding her hand in the midst of literal chaos.
"You're beautiful." She said the words in a soft voice, knowing they were ill timed and out of context for the moment. Purposefully not paying more than secondary attention to the tall figure that had started to run at them in response to Lena's taunt as he'd taken it, knowing that the police office who had just arrived would make a spectacular tackle of him at the half way point to the pair. "If he knew anything about love, he'd know his words don't mean anything. The only thing that matters is that we feel it."
Lena nodded softly, not breaking eye contact with the blonde, instead she pressed up and ghosted her lips over Kara's, her smile constant. Even more flares of camera flashes went off around them but neither of them seemed to notice.
"I think it's fair to say Date three was the best yet." Lena whispered the words in the short space between then before kissing the blonde a second time.
The end...
