Knits & Purls

It was a cold winter day at Malfoy Manor, but it didn't hinder Astoria's ability to adapt with indoor activities. Blizzards were the worst and nipped at her bones, but she learned to stave it off by knitting large blanket pieces that warmed her along the way. This time she was trying her hand at making knit plushies and was working with a mixed spring colored yarn of emerald, lavender, and cerulean blue dragon. A special request from Scorpius.

She knew they were the small family's favorite colors, too.

Draped in one of the heavy blankets from the couch, Astoria sat in her favorite chair by the window and knitted away on the shell of the dragon while watching the snowfall outside. She had recently purchased a lovely emerald-colored yarn for Scorpius to practice with. It was bigger and thicker, which would work better with the larger needles she bought with it so it would be easier for him to learn and practice with. She learned the hard way, unfortunately, and using the smaller needles and yarn was quite tedious to pick up on when starting out.

Her son toddled in after several quiet minutes of just her and the crackling fire nearby. He plopped down next to the basket and dug through the lemon yellow, lilac, and blush pink yarn to find that one ball of green he favoured. Astoria put her project down to pull out the new tools for him.

"Here, sweetie. This bigger yarn will be easier for you," she said.

Though his little six-year-old hands could barely hold the fat needles, he eagerly climbed into her lap so she could help him start a chain.

"I'm going to make a snake!" He announced, pulling the end of the yarn so he could start.

"The green will be perfect for it."

She kissed the top of his blond head and helped Scorpius position his hands and started aiding him in the first couple of stitches. When he was comfortable with working the yarn, she set him on his way before resuming her own task.

Draco came in some time later holding a tray with steaming mugs of what smelled like hot chocolates. Setting it on the coffee table, he approached the pair, smiling warmly.

"What are we making today?" he asked, leaning into the chair.

Astoria hid hers behind Scorpius, knowing that it was supposed to be a surprise for him from Scorpius. It was one of three animals he requested, the other two being a scorpion and a swan.

"It's a secret."

"I'm making a snake!" Scorpius announced over Astoria, holding up his chain of emerald green. It looked pretty good, she might show him how to make it thicker now.

"That looks great," Draco said, not seeming to catch on to what Astoria said.

"You came bearing gifts?"

"Ah, yes. Hot chocolate for my two favorite people," he said, wandlessly moving the table closer to them so they could enjoy the sweet beverage.
