Now Lily Evans has done it. She's dead, her life is over. Why had she lied about having a boyfriend? How was she going to show up at her family's Christmas dinners without one? She refuses to be Petunia's laughing stock again this year, so she does what any sensible girl would do. She hires an escort to play the part. Modern AU

Lily Evans leads a simple life of making pies and waking the dead. She doesn't wake them for good, mind – only for a minute, until she and Sirius can find out who killed them. Their latest case: James Potter, moneyed heir, messy haired, and recent murder victim. Keeping him alive is a terrible idea. Too bad Lily's always been a bit reckless.

"What are you doing here, Potter?" She asked, grabbing her shot and making her way to his table. James lowered his feet, smiling as Lily took the chair next to him. "The same thing you're doing here, Evans. I'm getting roaring drunk."

COMPLETE! Just past midnight, when the house was all tucked up and silent, he would walk and think about everything. Written as a birthday gift for otterandterrier.

Because standing in front of him with her green eyes blown wide and mouth shaped in a small 'o' is Lily Evans and James is just about hoping that the ground would open up beneath his feet and swallow him whole.

One question has many answers, to the point where neither Lily nor James seem to completely know for sure: "Are you two dating?"

For there were thousands of things that Sirius Black thought of when he thought of Remus Lupin, and he hoped he always would: warm jumpers, folded with the arms tucked in so that they wouldn't fray, and a slight Welsh lilt at the end of the word 'fuck' when he burned his long, shaking fingers with the tip of a match trying to light a cigarette.

When he's off, chattering a mile a minute about something that makes Hermione's heart ache with familiarity, she thinks that she could spend a lifetime with this phone pressed to her ear as long as Ron Weasley is on the other end of the line.

The instinct to touch his arm flared up inside of her for half a second, but Lily had gotten good at repressing that. She hadn't touched James in nearly six months. She wasn't allowed to anymore.

She'd come without a date, dressed as Sandra D, and the owner of the bloody house, the host of the party she was attending, perhaps uninvited, the unfairly fit bloke staring down at her, was actually dressed as her fictional boyfriend. When she gets to the Kitchens, she doesn't expect James Potter to be there. James drops the spoon he's holding. It clatters into the bowl of batter and disappears beneath the surface. A glob of it lands on his jumper. "No! No. Come in. I'm making cookies. For Sirius."

"That's not very much in the Christmas spirit, Evans." She tries to conceal her smile, but knows James can feel it. "And staking out a Death Eater hideout is?"

They get married in October.

"'I've come so close,' he says, just barely above a whisper as he sinks to his knees and rests his head in her lap. His hands are clutching hers now. 'To death' she chokes out. He nods against her and she feels his hair brush against the thin fabric of her stockings as something inside of her breaks." James/Lily. One-shot.

Lily visits the coffee shop because Sev works there, even though he's got a completely obnoxious coworker with admittedly fantastic hair.

"We'll be alright, Lily," he tells her, never mind that his voice is hoarse. He strokes her hair comfortingly with his other hand. He can feel her tears on his shirt, he can feel her shoulders shudder, and it breaks his heart.

That smile was for Potter now, and she was beautiful for him – just for him. Snape knew it. He could tell. She was lit up from the inside and it was Potter who did that to her. L/J [Snape POV]. One-shot.

It was the middle of the night and the Quidditch pitch was dark... L/J. One-shot.

"I've been a right berk, Lil. I should've said something earlier. Tonight, or last week. Last month even. I should've said something ages ago." He loosened his grip on her hands, running one of his own through his hair. "Please," he murmured. "Don't give up on us yet."

L/J. It doesn't surprise her at all that James Potter comes rushing into the Hospital Wing only an hour after she lands herself there. And for someone she doesn't even like all that much, she's still glad to see him.

"What's it like, having it all?" she says, and he's still mystified. He raises an eyebrow. She blinks at him and sighs. Finally: "Being a Pureblood." Sirius lets out a bitter laugh. "I'm not sure having pure blood equates to having it all, Evans," he scorns, but she doesn't cower under his words. Pairing: L/J.

Regardless of pain, regardless of context, regardless of the darkness, Hermione decides that she wants to stay in this moment forever. She savors the twisted wrongness of it, because she's just been tortured. She can't locate any good in the world, can't remember why there was a point to live besides this man who has saved her once more. And she's not remotely ready for the light.
