The sun was just setting over National City, Alex was excited they had wrapped up at the DEO earlier than expected. Her & Supergirl had just finished off some alien baddies & she was ready for a night in with her girl. She planned the perfect night in for her and Kelly. She smiled at the thought of her girlfriend waiting for her in her apartment. She decided to stop and get flowers. Smiling leaving the small shop, she looked up & her breath caught. It was like everything stopped. There she was, across the street heading into a bar, probably just getting off shift. Her brain started zooming a mile a minute and she hoped she didn't see her too. Someone beeped their horn waiting for Alex to cross the street, she looked up, smiled awkwardly, waved, and crossed. Looking to see if she was still around. She was. She was now standing directly where Alex was crossing, waiting for her on the sidewalk. She hadn't seen her before, but the car horn got her attention. Alex shifted awkwardly as she noticed her gaze as she approached the side walk. Stepping onto the curb, she nodded and looked down shyly, her heart almost stopped hearing "Danvers," softly leave the woman in front of hers lips.
Alex looked up and gave a half smile, "Maggie, hi."
"How have you been?" She said releasing a breath and crossing her arms.
"Good, good...good...uh, you look great," Alex said letting out an awkward shy laugh.
"Yea, you too," Maggie said with a soft smile.
They stood there for a moment in silence, just taking each other in. Alex relaxing for just a moment, then Maggie noticed the flowers in her hand. "Got a hot date?" Maggie asked staying calm and cool on the outside, but her heart pounding not wanting to know the answer. Alex looked down at the flowers in her hand that she forgot she was even holding. Looking back at Maggie she didn't know what to say. She felt awkward and conflicted. Maggie smiled seeing the look on Alex's, she missed her awkward panic face. "It's cool Danvers, I'm happy for you." She let slip before unfolding her arms and turning toward the bar.
Alex's mouth fell open wanting to stop her from walking away, but not having any idea what to say. Instead she just watched her disappear into the bar.
Kara was sitting on the couch watching tv and eating popcorn when all of a sudden she heard insistent banging on the front door. "Alex, what are you doing here?" She asked as she opened the door surprised to see her sister.
As soon as the door was open Alex was inside pacing. "I saw her Kara. I saw her tonight."
"What? Alex slow down, you saw who?"
She stopped pacing and looked Kara straight in the eye, "Maggie, I saw Maggie." She shook her head fighting her emotions from spilling over as she started to rant again. "It's been months, months Kara. Why now? Why did I have to see her now? I'm finally moving on, things are finally feeling good with Kelly."
"Alex," Kara went to reach for her, but she pulled away.
"I love Kelly, I shouldn't be feeling like this."
"Alex, you can still love Kelly, but have complex feelings about seeing Maggie."
"No Kara. Seeing her, it all came back. Every moment just rushed back and hit me." She sat down and put her head in her hands. Kara walked over and sat next to her sister.
"Alex, it is ok," Kara said softly as Alex looked up, she looked so small to Kara. So sad and confused. She pulled her sister into a hug, just holding her for a moment, then took a deep breath and said, "you were going to see her eventually, I'm honestly surprised it didn't happen sooner. But aren't you glad that when it had to happen you know you're in a good place?"
Alex pulled away from Kara and was on her feet again. "In a good place? Does it look like I'm in a good place?"
"Well I just meant with Kelly, you're-"
Alex cut her off, starting to pace again, "why do you think I'm so scared Kara? Do you really think if I was in a good place with Kelly seeing Maggie would still affect me this much?" She said with anger in her voice. She took a deep breath and sat back down. "I love her Kara, I do. She makes me happy, but Kara...it's Maggie."
Kara just nodded pulling her sister back into a hug.
Alex stayed at Kara's for a few hours just sitting with her while they watched tv trying to calm down. She couldn't go home, not when she knew Kelly was there waiting for her, not until she had her emotions more under control. She sighed as she opened the front door. Kelly was asleep on the couch when she walked in 'thank God,' she thought to herself as she put her jacket and keys away. She laid the flowers on the kitchen counter and moved off into the bathroom to get ready for bed. She looked at herself in the mirror for the first time tonight. She could see the sadness on her own face, she took a deep breath and turned on the water to rinse her face. When she looked back up she jumped seeing Kelly standing behind her.
"These for me?" She asked holding up the flowers. Alex just nodded reaching for the towel to dry her face. "Where have you been?"
"It was a long night, ya know how it goes." Alex said brushing past her into the bedroom to change.
"I saw on the news Supergirl had the guy locked up hours ago, I figured you'd be home before dinner."
Alex closed her eyes, of course she had seen it on the news. She didn't want to do this, didn't want to talk about this, especially not with Kelly. She sighed, "yea, the bad guy stuff was all wrapped up, but there was a lot of DEO research stuff to follow up on. J'onn & I were discussing some new procedures, I guess time got away from us."
Kelly shifted awkwardly, she could feel the tension, but didn't know what was going on. She walked up behind Alex, putting a hand on the small of her back. "Did something happen?"
Alex turned, "no, I'm fine. Just tired, long night." Kelly nodded as she watched Alex turn down the bed.
"You could have called."
Alex closed her eyes again, she knew she was right and if the story she told Kelly actually checked out she would have. She felt guilty for lying, guilty for her feelings about Maggie, she just looked up and gave Kelly a sad smile. "You're right, I should have, I'm sorry." And with that she climbed into bed and rolled over to hopefully settle her brain and sleep.
But sleep didn't come. Kelly got into bed next to her a few minutes later, she had gone to put the flowers in a vase and turn the lights off. Alex felt like her brain was on overdrive, she didn't know what she was supposed to do or think now. But she did know Kelly made her happy. Kara was right, things were good so why was she letting seeing Maggie ruin that?...the problem was she couldn't get Maggie out of her head. The way she looked tonight. Thinking of Maggie going into the bar, who she may be meeting, what she'd be doing, who she may be going home with. It hurt her heart thinking of Maggie leaving the bar with someone. She shook her head and let out a silent groan, it was going to be a long night.
Alex, Kara, Kelly, Winn, and J'onn were walking down the streets of National City. As the cool night breeze hit her face, Alex couldn't help but realize how content she felt. It had been a few days since her encounter with Maggie and she was finally feeling back to normal. She smiled at Kelly looking at their hands intertwined. As soon as they entered the dive she saw her. Leather jacket, her perfect waves framing her face, her dimple shining in full force as she laughed at something the bar tender said. Kara looked between Maggie and Alex, furrowing her brows, concern for her sister showing as she they walked closer to the brunette. Feeling eyes on her she looked around and spotted the group, "wow, twice in one week."
Alex didn't know what to say, Kelly looked at her and the women sitting at the bar, confusion on her face. Kara decided to interject, "wow, Maggie, it's great to see you."
"You too Kara-"
Before she had a chance to finish, Alex blurted out "what are you doing here?"
Maggie turned her attention from Kara and gave Alex a look, "excuse me?"
Alex blinked, not expecting such attitude in return. She was shocked to see Maggie the other night and she was finally feeling good, but here she was again. "What are you doing here?" She asked again, this time more forcefully.
"What am I doing here? In my bar. Ya know the one I told you about. I was avoiding it for so long because I was so afraid to see you. But after the other night I realized how stupid I was being." She downed her shot and stood up, "this was my place, why did I need to be the one to give it up? You're moving on," she said glancing at Kelly, "I should to...see you around Danvers."
The group stood there awkwardly processing what just happened, Kelly with a mix of anger and confusion on her face. She looked at Alex annoyed, "what did she mean twice in one week?"
Everyone shifted uncomfortably, Winn decided to break the tension with a joke and ordering a drink. The rest of the group followed him as he went to sit down.
"Alex, what was that?" Alex turned her head back from watching Maggie leave to her girlfriend who was clearly annoyed. "What is going on?"
"Nothing," Alex said pushing past her to the bar to order a drink. Kelly stood there next to her as Alex sat down. "Kelly I really don't want to talk about this."
"We need to talk about this."
Alex downed a shot and signaled the bar tender for another, not looking at her girlfriend. She took a deep breath and turned to face Kelly, "what do you want me to say?"
"I just want you to be honest with me," Kelly said taking her hand.
Looking down at her drink Alex closed her eyes, "I ran into Maggie the other night, we chatted for a bit and then moved on. I didn't know she would be here tonight."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
She turned and shook her head, scoffing "I didn't think it mattered."
"Alex of course it matters, you're clearly upset. Look it's ok that you're upset, seeing your ex is never easy, and clearly she isn't making it easy by showing where you she knows you'll be. You guys had-"
Alex cut her off, "please don't treat me like I'm one of your patients. I know what we had, but I also know what we have," she said gesturing between her and Kelly, "I'm choosing to focus on that and I'd rather not discuss this anymore," she said before downing another shot.
Maggie sighed as she let herself into her dark empty apartment. She threw her keys onto the counter and turned on the lights. Then she just leaned against the wall for a minute with her eyes closed. She was playing things cool with Alex, but seeing her was killing her. She composed herself and then walked into her bedroom. Going into the closet she pulled down a box of stuff she hadn't thought about in months. She smiled sadly as she opened it and saw a silly picture of Alex on top. She could hear Alex's laugh in her head as she looked at the picture, she missed that laugh. She continued to pull items out of the box, tears welling in her eyes. She stopped on something, and couldn't hold the tears back anymore. It was a little bone shaped tag that said "Gertrude." She had it made and was going to surprise Alex after their wedding with a dog from the shelter.
Letting the tears wash over her, she dropped the tag back in the box and closed it up. She held it close to her chest and closed her eyes before standing up and putting it back in the closet she had gotten it from.
She shook her head, trying to fight the thoughts running in her brain. She knew seeing Alex again would be hard, but she never thought it would be this hard. She knew here was a chance Alex would show up tonight and she was ready for that, what she wasn't ready for was seeing her hand in hand with someone else. She stood by what she said in the bar, she gave up her place for too long in fear of seeing Alex.
After they saw each other on the street, she woke up with the worst hangover in her life. And she thought she getting good & drunk on their supposed to wedding day was bad. But she also realized that she did it. She saw her. And as much as it sucked, she couldn't be afraid to do it again. She was taking back her space. The only way she would heal is getting back to normal & taking back her bar was step one.
It's been two weeks since Alex saw Maggie last and she still couldn't stop thinking about her. She hated it. Hated how smug she was the last time they spoke. How cool and calm she was being. She hated that things still weren't right with Kelly. How she can't seem to get Maggie out of her head no matter how much she tried. "Alex...Alex...hello, earth to Alex," she heard Kara's voice, blinking she shook her head. They were standing in the DEO headquarters, she had zoned out looking at one of the screens.
"Yea, sorry."
"You ok?"
"Yea, I'm fine, what's going on?" Kara just looked at her with concern.
Alex looked back with slight annoyance."really Kara I'm fine."
Winn and J'onn walked in giving them the low down on the latest attack. Alex was determined to throw herself into as much work as she could. Working late hours doing research, visiting every site with Kara, anything to keep her mind off of Maggie. It wasn't helping things with Kelly, but she needed to feel like her life had balance again.
As Alex walked onto the scene she looked around, she saw the car parked in front of the building and knew, she was here. Pushing the through the door she shook her head and took a breath. The whole reason she was working so hard was to avoid Maggie, not so she could see her at work. She spotted her right away. Her hair pulled into a bun with a few stands around her face, oversized police jacket covering the small frame of her body. Alex's breath caught in her throat for a minute as she just watched Maggie move around the scene talking to different people for information. It had been a while since she'd seen her in action.
Maggie saw her come in from the corner of her eye, she knew she would be here. She was ready to see her tonight. But it still wasn't easy. If anything she knew working with Alex on cases would be harder than they've ever been, but she couldn't avoid it anymore. When she decided she would take her bar back she also decided she couldn't keep avoiding things just because of Alex. So here she was scoping out an alien crime scene waiting for the DEO to show up, knowing exactly who they would send in. She took a deep breath and head to where Alex was ready to fill her in.
Alex hadn't realized she had been staring at Maggie from across the room until she noticed her coming towards her. She shook her head and blinked herself out of her thoughts. She took a deep breath and met Maggie half way. "Whatcha got?" Maggie went over the findings with Alex, she had to admit it was good to work with her again. Every once in a while they were interrupted by another teammate to share something new. A few hours had gone by when Alex's phone rang, looking at the name that flashed on the screen her face got hot. Working with Maggie and spending so much time with her, she had honestly forgotten about Kelly...again. "Hey babe." She said answering the phone.
Maggie had to admit hearing the words hurt. She turned away from Alex and started wrapping things up. They had done all that they could for the night, time to head back. When Alex got off the phone she saw Maggie heading for the door, before even thinking she was running after her "hey, wait." Maggie stopped looking into Alex's eyes. Alex froze not really sure what to do or say next or why she even stopped Maggie in the first place. "Uh," she paused awkwardly, holding up the phone in her hand. "My dinner plans just got canceled, pizza?"
Taking a sip of her beer Maggie had a content smile on her face. It felt so good being around Alex again, listening to her stories, seeing her laugh. But she also knew this was dangerous. She kept telling herself this time would be different, they could be friends, but deep down she knew that wasn't true.
Alex took another bite of pizza and looked around the bar, she couldn't remember the last time she felt so at peace. Being with Maggie tended do that to her, make her forgot about all of her problems...the only problem was Maggie was currently on that list. She kept reminding herself that it was fine, they could be friends. She was happy with Kelly, there's no need for messy past relationship stuff to get in the way, things were good...except they weren't. The way Maggie's hair fell perfectly in the right place, the way her eyes lit up while she was telling a story, her laugh was like music to Alex's ears. Her heart started beating fast as she watched Maggie lick pizza sauce from her lip, she had to bite down on her own lip as she fought back the urge to reach over the table and lick it off herself. Maggie stood up, breaking Alex out of her thoughts. "How about game for old time sake?" Maggie said heading to the pool table.
Alex laughed and followed her, "you're kidding right? You know I'll kick your ass."
"Oh come on Danvers, I may surprise you." She said wracking you the pool balls. They played a few games and Maggie did not surprise her. Alex beat her every game, although her technique did seem to have gotten a little better.
Alex laughed finishing off her 4th beer, "ok, I think we should call it quits. Unless you wanna lose again."
Maggie laughed, "it's a good thing I didn't put any money on me beating you this time."
They paused for a moment just looking into each other's eyes as they stood together at the pool table. Both of them feeling the urge to pull the other one closer, Maggie cleared her throat and looked away, moving toward their table. As she put on her jacket she smiled, "well Danvers this was fun, we should do it again sometime." Before Alex could say anything Maggie was walking passed her and leaving the bar. She followed her into the ally and grabbed her arm to turn her around. Surprised to see Alex standing there she smiled with confusion "What's up?" And that's when Alex did it, she pushed her lips against Maggie's. Maggie moaned as soon as their lips touched, her eyes closing immediately, a feeling of euphoria washing over her. She looped her fingers into the belt loops on Alex's pants and pulled her closer, leaning onto the ally wall for support. Maggie moved her hands from Alex's waist to her back, pulling their bodies closer together as Alex ran her hands through Maggie's hair. Alex's phone rang breaking them both out of their trance. They pulled apart taking in deep breaths just staring at each other. Finally the annoyance of the phone getting to her, Alex reached down to answer, but she kept Maggie pinned to the wall. Leaning into her, her free head resting on the brick next to Maggie's head.
"Hello," Alex said into the phone trying to keep the heavy breathing out of the receiver. Alex tried to wrap up the call quickly and looked back at Maggie, but the desire was replaced with guilt. "That was..."
"You're girlfriend." Maggie finished the statement for her. They both looked down for a moment, Maggie shrugged it off pretending like she was fine with whatever this situation they had found themselves in was. "Well I better let you get back to her," she said pulling away from the wall and headed down the ally.
"Will you just stop," Alex said letting out a tired breath. Maggie turned back looking at her with confusion. "Stop acting like you're fine with all of this. Like this is normal."
Maggie turned face her fully, she could feel the tension building, "well how should I act Alex? What you want me to mope around, hide in the shadows, stop working? I tried all that, now I want my life back."
"I don't know, stop acting like it's all so easy," Alex shrugged out.
Maggie laughed, "Easy? You think this is easy for me? Seeing you buy flowers for someone else, seeing you with them, hearing you call them babe? You don't think that rips me up? But what am I supposed to do? You're happy, that's all I can hope for you."
Maggie went to turn to leave, but stopped hearing Alex's words, "what, you're just going to walk away again?"
She turned around, this time there was anger in her voice, "excuse me? I'm not the one that walked away. You broke up with me."
"Because we wanted different things, not because I didn't love you."
"And what, you think because I don't want kids I don't love you?" Alex chose not to focus on the present tense in Maggie's word choice.
"I don't know Maggie, I just feel like you're so scared because of what happened to you and that's fair, but that doesn't mean you won't be a good mom. And that doesn't mean-"
Maggie cut her off, "I can't do this again."
Alex followed behind Maggie as she started walking away again, "admit it Maggie, you're scared."
She turned around to face her again, "so what if I am? If I can't be enough for you, how am I supposed to be enough for a tiny person who only relies on me?"
"Wait, Maggie, not enough for me, what are you-"
"If I was enough it wouldn't matter if I wanted kids, you would want to be with me," she looked down and started to leave again. This time Alex let her go, shocked by her words. Alex knew she wanted kids, she's always wanted to be a mom, it's the one thing she always knew she would be good at. But she never really considered why Maggie was so upset when she pushed for it.
Alex stood there is the dark ally beyond confused. She was feeling so much guilt, guilt for what Maggie had just said, guilt for blowing off Kelly, guilt for kissing Maggie...but damn was it a good kiss. She missed the way their lips felt together, the way Maggie's body felt pressed up against hers...no, she thought she can't go there. Not only was she destroying her relationship with Kelly, she had also just ruined any chance of a friendship with Maggie. She groaned and shook her head deciding a walk home would help clear her mind.
Walking through the front door Alex had never been more happy to be greeted by an empty apartment. She walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. As she got in she tried to just let all of the stress from the day wash down the drain with the dirt. She couldn't stop thinking about the kiss that she and Maggie had shared. It was the first time she had felt alive in months. She just kept replaying it in her head, Maggie's soft lips, the smell of her hair in her face, her smooth skin. She let out a frustrated groan as she opened her eyes. She had to try and at least make things right with her. She hated how defeated Maggie sounded, she had never heard her sound so small. Maggie was always so confident, even when she was feeling broken. As Alex got out of the shower she heard her phone go off again, annoyed she answered it without even looking at who was calling, "yea?"
"Alex you need to come down to the DEO now," she heard the seriousness Kara's voice and panicked.
"Kara, is everything ok? What happened?"
"Just meet me here." And with that the line clicked off. Alex quickly got dressed and headed down to find out what happened.
Alex rushed into the room "Kara?" She ran to her sister who was staring at coordinates on one of the screens. "Kara are you ok? What happened?"
"Alex..."
Alex then heard the beeps coming from the infirmary, the look on Kara's face told her she didn't want to know who was in there. Alex rushed around the corner and her heart stopped, tears were welling in her eyes. She rushed to Maggie's side looking at the scrapes and bruises forming on her face, she ran her hand over her forehead. Kara walked into the room, her heart breaking for her sister, Alex looked up. "Her sadness turning to anger, "what the hell happened?"
"Alex, we are already tracking the people responsible for this, I will make them pay for this." Kara said grabbing her sisters shoulders trying to reassure her.
"No Kara, I will," Alex said as she tried to push past her, but Kara wouldn't budge.
"No Alex, this is too close for you, let us handle it, you stay here and take care of Maggie."
Alex was filled with fury, she wanted nothing more than to completely pulverize who ever did this, but she looked at Maggie and sighed. Someone needed to be with her and make sure she stayed stable.
As Kara took off, Alex sat down, in the chair next to Maggie's bed. Just watching her chest rise and fall, listening to the beeping of the machines. She didn't understand how this had happened, she was just with Maggie. She knew she shouldn't have let her walk home alone, not that Maggie usually needed protection, she could kickass with the best of them. Alex just shook her head, breaking herself out of her thoughts. She was starting to get a headache and realized she was probably dehydrated from her night at the bar. She stepped outside of the room to get some water and was shocked to see Maggie awake and trying to sit up when she got back. She walked in quickly, moving to the side of the bed "ok, come on, back down you go."
"Alex I'm fine," Maggie insisted trying to sit up.
"Well as your doctor I say you're not, so lay back down."
Maggie huffed and leaned back, she knew Alex was right, she wasn't fine. In fact, she was in a lot of pain. But being stuck in the DEO infirmary alone with Alex was the last thing she wanted, especially after their fight tonight. An awkward silence fell over them and Alex started pacing, moving her arms from side to side. Maggie looked down at herself, tracing the wires attached to her body with her eyes. She could see bruises forming on her arms. Alex stopped and looked at Maggie, noticing she was inspecting herself, "what happened?"
Maggie looked up, "there was an attack on my way home. A couple of civilians caught in the crossfire so I jumped in. Good news they got away, bad news, clearly I wasn't as lucky. Guess I got my ass kicked in more ways than one tonight," she laughed trying to make light of their situation and taking it back their pool games, but quickly grabbed her side. Alex moved closer to her, but Maggie put her hand up, "I'm good Danvers." She sat back and shook her head, "what are you doing here?"
"I work here, I-"
"No, but why are you here," Maggie said gesturing around the room, "there are other qualified people to make sure I'm ok and considering you spent most of the night at the bar, I know you weren't working tonight."
"Kara called me. I was worried about you."
"Well you don't have to be, I'm fine."
"Stop saying that," Alex blurted out a little more forcefully than she intended. "Maggie, you're laying a hospital bed, you're not fine."
"I don't see how it's really your business anymore." Maggie said sternly folding hers lightly against her chest.
The words were harsh, but Alex knew she was right. It wasn't...but she needed to make sure she was ok. "It is my business," she said firmly, placing hands on her hips, "Maggie, I care about you."
"Can we not do this," Maggie said annoyed. Alex tried to interject, but Maggie continued. "What is the point of all of this Alex? We keep going in circles, at the end of the day nothing has changed."
Alex's body loosened up as she looked down, she knew Maggie was right. Maggie closed her eyes trying to force the thoughts of their night of her head and her feelings for Alex aside. Alex walked softly toward Maggie, sitting on the edge of the hospital bed. She took her hands in hers, "hey..." Alex said softly, "look at me." Maggie opened her eyes and turned her head to face Alex, "why on earth would you ever think you weren't enough for me?"
Maggie shifted, immediately regretting it as pain hit her body. She looked back at Alex, tears starting to well in her eyes "I wasn't enough for my parents, you see how things are with us. I was always afraid it would the same with you and it was."
"But Maggie, I-"
"Alex, you broke up with me, you left me. I know that you have always wanted to be a mom, and I don't want to take that dream away from you. But it felt like just being with me wasn't enough."
"Maggie, you have to know breaking off our engagement was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Yes, I have always wanted to be a mom, I want a family...but I wanted that life with you." She tucked a strand of hair behind Maggie's ear and rested her hand on the side of her head. They looked at each other with sad smiles. Alex took a deep breath and then asked the question she's spent months wondering, "why don't you want to be a mom?...not that you have to want that, I know that it's not for all women and society pushing it as a norm is a problem and-"
Maggie laughed lightly as Alex babbled on, she forgot how cute she was when she was nervous. "Danvers," she said softly, stopping Alex from going on.
"Right, sorry. I just...what are you so afraid of? I've seen you, you're great with kids, I guess I just don't understand why it be different with ours."
Maggie took a breath and nodded, Alex was right, she was great with kids. But she has always been terrified of having her own, "I didn't exactly have the best role models growing up. My home life, my family...it wasn't great. I just, I don't want to pass that along. It's different with other people's kids. But when they're yours? There's no safety net, there's no guarantee you won't screw them up. How does that not scare you?"
Alex laughed, "of course it does. I spent my whole life trying to be perfect. And I hope that I don't imprint that same pressure into my kids. There are no guarantees, but that feeling of being a mom. Knowing that this person, this tiny adorable little person needs you and looks up to, it makes you want to be better, to do better. To really hold yourself accountable...& ya know we've seen a lot of shit. Dealt with a lot of bad, wouldn't be so amazing to just have a little piece of good." She stroked the back of Maggie's hand, "I know it's scary, but you're not your parents. You're incredible. Any kid would be so beyond lucky to have you as a mom." Maggie looked down at their hands, blinking back tears. She didn't know what to think or feel in that moment. She always knew she didn't want to take the risk of hurting her kids the way her parents hurt her, the biggest way to avoid that was not having them at all. But Alex was right, they did deserve a little bit of happy and little bit of good...she shook her head and looked up at Alex, ready to speak, but stopped as there was a knock on the doorframe.
"Kelly," Alex said nervously standing up and moving away from Maggie's hospital bed. Kelly looked hurt and confused by the scene in front of her, she didn't say anything, just turned around and walked away.
Alex looked at Maggie and she nodded with understanding as Alex went after her. Maggie had to admit she felt bad for her, she was collateral damage in whatever this was with her and Alex.
"Kelly. Kelly wait," Alex called down the hallway.
"I'm an idiot," Kelly said turning around. "I should have known since we saw her at the bar, you were so upset. Are you guys back together?"
Alex was surprised by the bluntness of the question, "what? No, we just-"
"Well you clearly still love her." Kelly shot back.
Alex paused, she didn't know what to say, of course she did. And she didn't think she would ever stop, but that doesn't mean she didn't also love Kelly. "Kelly, I-"
"From what you've told me about her I didn't think you would want her back. I want a family, kids, a future with you. And what you're just going to give all of that up for her?"
Alex paused hearing Kelly's words echo in her head, thinking back to what Maggie said earlier. It wasn't enough that Kelly wanted a family, what good was that if you couldn't share it with the person you loved the most? Alex thought she wanted to be a mom more than anything in the world, but in that moment she realized, she wanted Maggie more. "Kelly, I'm so sorry. You deserve someone who wants all of those things and wants them with you." They stood there awkwardly for a moment before Kelly blinked away a tear, turned and left.
Alex felt a moment of calm come of her, she turned around and headed back into Maggie's room. She felt like a fog had lifted from her brain and she was thinking clearly for the first time in months. Maggie looked down awkwardly as Alex came back into the room, "hey look I'm not trying to cause problems for you guys, you can go, I'm-" she was cut off by Alex's lips on hers. It was a short and sweet kiss, and when they pulled apart Alex was grinning from ear to ear. "Alex, but I thought-"
"Marry me," Alex said softly."
Maggie looked at her like she had ten heads, "Alex, what are you?-"
"I love you. I want to be with you, I want to spend my life with you. Kids or no kids, you are enough Maggie Sawyer."
Maggie watched Alex as she sat back down on the side of her bed confusion all over her face, "Alex are you ok? Did you hit your head or something on your way back in here?"
Alex laughed, and leaned in closer to Maggie, running her hand through her hair, "I'm good, no trauma or head injury, I'm thinking perfectly clearly." She smiled matter of factly. And then repeated her statement,"marry me."
Maggie's heart skipped, she remembered the first time Alex had said those words to her and how quickly she said yes. They'd been through a lot since then, but here they were, some how finding their way back. She looked down for a moment, examining her bruises again. She could have died tonight, she could have never had another day with Alex again, but the universe was giving them another chance, who was she to stop it, "ok," she said a small smile forming on her lips.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" Alex joked wanting to hear Maggie say it again.
She laughed, her dimples showing "I said yes Danvers, I'll marry you."
Alex smiled and moved forward, placing a hand on each one of Maggie's cheeks, leaning on to kiss her. Their lips connected with so much passionate it was almost like an electric shock ran through their bodies. Maggie had to slowly pull away winced slightly in pain. "Oh, I'm sorry," Alex quickly said pulling back.
Maggie laughed slightly, "Alex, it's ok. Besides, I enjoyed it," she wiggled her eyebrows jokingly. "But we should probably wait until I'm a little more healed up."
Alex stood up, "you know I could definitely prescribe something for when you're all better."
Maggie arched her brow and smiled, "really? Well Dr. Danvers, I better rest up."
They joked and talked for a while after that until eventually Alex told Maggie she needed some real rest and insisted she get some sleep. Alex climbed onto the bed with Maggie, curling up into her side trying the best she could not to hurt her.
That's how Kara and J'onn found them when they got back. Kara was a little confused about what had happened, but one look from J'onn and she knew there was nothing to worry about. Her sister was happy.
3 weeks later...
"Hey, hey, hey, what do you think you're doing caring that?" Alex asked taking the box out of Maggie's hands.
"I can carry a box, Danvers."
"No, you are still healing, you're not carrying anything...except maybe pillows." Alex said as she put the box down.
Winn walked in carrying something heavy, complaining the whole way, "geez Maggie, are you filling these boxes with bricks." Causing both girls to laugh. Kara walked in carrying 4 boxes stacked above her head, between her super strength and X-ray vision she was the perfect moving buddy. "Why can't we just load Kara up with everything? It's not like she's even breaking a sweat."
"Where's the fun in that?" Maggie said as Alex laughed.
"Yea, half the fun is watching you struggle," Kara said heading back to the car.
Alex and Maggie stood in the kitchen together for a minute. Their kitchen. Alex reached her arms around Maggie and rested her head on her shoulder. Besides the night they got back together, today was the happiest Alex has ever felt. After today she wouldn't have to wonder when she would get to see Maggie when she woke up in the morning, she would just be able to roll over in bed and see her. Maggie smiled holding Alex's arms on her stomach. "Now don't get too excited, but I have a small confession."
Alex arched her brow and pulled away slightly so they were face to face. "What's that?"
"I've been thinking about this whole mom thing," Maggie said looking around and then back at Alex, "maybe it won't be so bad." Alex was trying to stay cool, but couldn't help the giant smiled that formed on her face. She wanted to burst into a happy dance, but tried to contain her excitement. Maggie smiled back widely, "it's ok Danvers, you can be happy," she laughed.
Alex was unbelievably excited, she pulled Maggie into a hug and just whispered "thank you." Before running down the hall to tell Kara and to grab some boxes. Maggie started unpacking some of the boxes. She found the one that had her Alex box in it. The one she always thought would be painful to open, but now just makes her smile. She opened the box & pulled out the small dog tag. When Alex and Kara came back in both had huge smiles on their faces.
Alex walked over to where Maggie was and looked down at the box, "whatcha got?"
Maggie opened her hand and smiled, "we should probably start with a dog."
Alex laughed and looked the dog tag in Maggie's hand. She pulled her into a hug, and then looked down at the woman in her arms "I love you Maggie Sawyer."
"I love you too Alex Danvers."
