Thankfully, the police show up moments after the robbers are stopped. Lena thanks Supergirl, but her eyes are darting around, and Kara can guess who she's looking for. "I'm going to give the police an escort. May I check in with you tomorrow?"
"Certainly," Lena agrees.
Kara throws a quick glance at Winn, and he gets the message, stepping up to Lena and distracting her while Supergirl takes off. "That generator was pretty badass, did you build that yourself?"
Kara rushes through her fourth quick change of the evening, reappearing just as Lena's about to start physically searching the crowd. "Lena! Are you alright?"
Lena visibly relaxes when she looks at the blonde. "Kara! Where have you been?"
"I was dancing with Mike when the bad guys showed up," is she imagining it, or does Lena's expression harden at that?, "and then we got separated when everything went crazy. Are you okay?" she repeats her earlier question. "What happened? I saw an explosion!"
"Oh man, it was awesome!" Winn interjects. "Lena built a black body field generator!" Seeing Kara's blank look, he rushes on, "It absorbed the electromagnetic radiation from the weapons-"
"Wait, you set a trap for them?" Kara turns to Lena, equal parts impressed and horrified. "What if something had gone wrong?"
Lena shrugs, although she doesn't quite meet Kara's eyes. "That's why I invited Supergirl."
"Okay, yes, but did Supergirl help you with the induction coil?"
Lena huffs out a small laugh. "No, you're right. Thank you for your help, Mister…"
"Schott. Winn Schott," Winn extends his hand, grinning. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Luthor."
"Winn's my friend, we used to work together at CatCo," Kara explains.
Lena smiles. "It's a pleasure, Mr. Schott." She grips his hand briefly. "Kara, I-"
"Miss Luthor!" Lena's assistant, Jess, appears out of the crowd. "You said you wanted to-"
Lena sighs. "Right. Thank you Jess, I'll be there in a moment." Lena turns back to Kara and Winn. "I need to go make a quick speech. Kara, can I talk to you afterwards?"
"I'll be waiting," Kara promises. Lena smiles gratefully before heading up the stairs for the small stage.
"So that's Lena Luthor," Winn muses as he and Kara watch her go. "She's got guts."
Kara just sighs, grateful that tonight went as well as it did.

Lena breathes a sigh of relief as the Petersons step away. Her speech went over about as well as could be expected. People aren't thrilled that the robbers showed up, but as their property will be returned and no one was seriously injured, they seem to be willing to live and let live. In any event, everyone who has approached her so far has still promised money for the hospital. She'll count it as a win.
Lena takes advantage of the fact that no one else immediately demands her attention to search for Kara. She nods to several folks as she circulates, finally finding Kara talking with Winn Schott and a tall, dark-skinned man. The blonde catches her eye and smiles. "Hi Lena!"
Lena feels a genuine smile tug at her own lips. Something about this woman… "Kara, Mr. Schott." She looks at the third member of the group. "I'm sorry, I don't believe we've met."
"James Olsen," he states, extending a hand.
Why does that name sound familiar? "A pleasure," Lena replies, shaking his hand. "May I speak with Kara for a moment?" Both men nod, moving off in the direction of the newly reset buffet table.
"You know," Kara says, "you never answered my earlier question about if you're okay."
"I'm fine," Lena assures her, running her gaze over the reporter. "Are you? You said you were in the crowd when they showed up-"
"I'm good," Kara assures her. "Nothing I couldn't handle."
Tension bleeds out of Lena's shoulders. Human or alien, Kara has quickly become someone Lena cares about, and a small voice in her head had spent the last few days asking What if Kara gets hurt? "I… I feel like I owe you an apology. For tonight."
"You could have told me, you know." Kara doesn't seem angry, just… disappointed?
Lena's gaze drops. "I realize that, now. I… I'm sorry Kara, I don't have many friends, I'm used to playing things close to the vest…" Lena trails off as Kara reaches out and takes her hand. "I'm sorry."
"Apology accepted. Just… just promise me next time you set a trap for the bad guys, you'll give me a heads up? I mean, I'm clearly not much help, but, like, Alex or Supergirl could have totally given you a hand."
Laughter bubbles up in Lena's chest, and she finally looks up at the other woman. "Deal."
Kara grins, pleased. "Good. Oh!" She drops Lena's hand and starts digging in her clutch. "If we're going to be friends, you should probably have this!" She pulls out a small tablet and pen, quickly scribbles something on a piece of paper before tearing it out and passing it over. "My cell phone!"
Lena's heart nearly stops at the unexpected gesture. How long has it been since someone trusted her like this? She accepts the paper, glancing at the ten digits written there, and motions towards Kara's tablet. "May I?" Kara hands it and the pen over. Lena quickly turns to a blank page and writes out her own cell phone number before handing things back to Kara. "And now you have mine."
Kara's grin could light up the room.
