Days have passed since Anne, Charlie and the Plantars have returned to Wartwood and after the night of the welcome home party was over. The first day afterwards, everyone took the day off to rest since the fight with the Chicka-lisk has tired many of them out.
After a few days passed by. Toadstool was doing what he does in his job but he felt like there some instances where he was absent-minded or just distracted. He couldn't stop thinking about the good deeds that Charlie had done for him and how he was one of the first people to forgive him for his actions, even when Toadstool knew that a oversized male toad like himself didn't deserve Charlie's forgiveness.
Toadstool was in his office and he had a tall and big mirror inside his office. He was standing in front of the mirror, looking back at his own reflection. He appeared to be trying to say something or trying to build up the courage to admit something out loud.
"Am I straight or am I gay? I've dated women before. I've even kissed women. But I've never had those feelings for a guy." Toadstool thought to himself.
As the large male toad was wrestling with his thoughts and feelings. He was also wrestling with identifying his gender preference in terms of his sexual orientation. He felt like he wanted to talk to someone about this but he knew that it would be inappropriate to talk to anyone about it at the wrong time.
"This is gonna be harder than I thought." said Toadstool out loud.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Wartwood
Anne, Charlie, and the Plantars were out and about in town while they were taken to the locations where the trees with the seeds to the golden apples were planted. Wally, Ivy, Mrs. Croaker and Leopold took them to give them a look at the growth process of the trees and how much they've grown so far.
They were taken to the first location and the tree was already over ten feet high from the ground to the tip of the tree on top. It had shown that it was roughly wider than Stumpy's entire body or wider than his body mass for that matter from the looks of it. It had grown out plenty of branches from the tree trunk going up, plenty of green leaves have grown on the branches but there was only enough leaves that covered at least half of the tree while there was some small golden apples that were growing from the branches but they were the size of golf balls at the moment.
"Whoa! Mrs. Croaker, you were not kidding." said Anne wide eyed.
"The agricultural experts back at home would definitely be baffled at this." said Charlie with a hiccup.
"The apples on tree are not fully grown and are not ripe yet but judging from it's growth rate like Wally stated. It should take three or six months for a tree growing these apples to have the entire tree fully grown but the apples themselves, he's stated that the apples should be fully grown and ripe for the picking in the first two in a half months." explained Mrs. Croaker.
They looked at Wally as if wondering how he knew about the knowledge of the growth rate of a tree that grows the golden apples that will heal anyone of everything and anything.
"Wally, how do you know about this?" asked Anne curiously.
"I heard a traveling bloke talk about it that once came to Wartwood about several years ago. But he said that he found a book that detailed everything about growing these type of trees. I overheard him talking about it to a few locals when he was providing them information on how to grow an apple orchard but he was talking about if they were to grow an apple tree ether with normal apples or with these apples." explained Wally.
"Did they believe this person?" asked Charlie curiously.
"Well, they believe him about growing normal apples but when he told them about the golden apples. Very few believed him, some of them were thinking he was messing with them. Just like how something at times is messing with my eye." joked Wally about his own eye.
Polly smirked and laughed a bit about Wally's own joke who she knew was only making light hearted humor. Charlie smiled about it as he too knew the same thing Polly knew.
"With all these jokes and your sense of humor. You might as well be a comedian." giggled Charlie.
"Where is this fella you speak of, Wally? Did you ever talk to him?" asked Hop Pop.
Wally paused for a moment and thought back to the time he heard such information before he began to speak to them and explain it all further.
"I don't know who was or where he came from. I didn't go up to him. He was slightly older than Hopediah by about ten years, wore nothing but grey, had a long, thick and bushy beard and he wore a grew fedora and he walked around with a bejeweled cane. And he had a habit of calling everyone honey, sugar, or cookie." Wally described. "I think he was a bit flamboyant."
They took a moment to imagine what this person would look like but they all knew that they could barely imagine anyone with the appearance that Wally gave of this man. They probably didn't even know if this guy was still around or possibly been deceased for quite some time.
"Did he say his name?" asked Sprig.
"He never said his name." said Wally.
"I take it he didn't have the book on him ether?" guessed Leopold.
"He never shown it. For all we know, that book could be lost forever or buried deep in the ground in an undisclosed location. Like a dead body." joked Wally with a laugh.
Wally seemed to be showing he was being serious and being a comically wacky goofball at the same time. He pulled out his accordion and played a music tune as if to joke around while he did a little dance with his feet.
"If I were living in a mobile home and travel around a lot. Others I've encountered would ask me "Hey there bloke, you moving?" and I told him "Nope, I just pack my stuff once or twice a week. Just to see how many boxes it would take" and just like Hopediah said about those sort"
"Here's your sign!" everyone there said in unison. "And the sign reads "Moron Alert!"
Everyone laughed about the joke and the humor that Wally brought up. Afterwards, Wally put his accordion away as they all took a minute or two to laugh it out.
"Now that's funny." chuckled Hop Pop.
As they took a look at the still growing tree. They took it into account that what Wally told them had to be the truth since the tree was growing much faster than any normal tree would grow even if was growing faster than the type of trees that are fully grown in ten to fifteen years. But with the rate of this trees growth rate that is going to be growing them golden apples. What Wally told them had to be living proof that he was telling the truth. Despite the fact that he's a lovable goofball.
They had found out that there had been at least three spots in Wartwood that have these trees being planted and grown from the golden apple seeds and all three of them were showing the same intensely fast growth rate like the one that Wally, Ivy, Leopold and Mrs, Croaker have shown. The only explanation for these trees fast growth rate was from what Wally told them that he heard an old male frog talk about years ago. From the looks of the trees growth. It shown good news that they were going to be of good use to harvest the golden apples and use them to heal anyone of their afflictions or regenerate any loss of limbs. Charlie remembered that he had given more of them golden apples to people in twelve different places of Amphibia so they can plant and grow more of them and put them apples to good use. Charlie knew this was a good idea.
Others in town were curious to how Charlie conjured up a force field but they figured that if they wanted to know. They should only ask him if he feels comfortable about it. Even Charlie had no idea how he conjured it up.
Anne, Charlie, Sprig, Polly, Ivy and Maddie were at the Bugball field later on as they were teaching Charlie how to play Bugball since he's never played it before.
Charlie watched Anne and Sprig play for a bit as they were showing him how to play by having him watch and he took mental notes. Sprig tossed the ball at him and he caught it. He would dribble the ball a bit and tossed the ball up, ran forwards, jumped high into the air, and caught the ball in his hands and he made the ball go into the snake's skull that served as the basket. He landed on the ground and caught the ball as he smiled with confidence.
"Just like Mike! Ha!" cheered Charlie.
Charlie tossed the ball forwards and the one who caught it was Ivy. Anne ran over to him to hug him and lifted him up a bit and placed him back on his feet.
"My boy's a natural." cried Anne proudly.
Anne hugged him a bit too tight which Charlie groaned in a bit of pain. She noticed that she hugged too tight so she loosened her grip which felt like Charlie could breathe properly.
"So is there a sport back in your world that's kind of like Bugball?" asked Ivy curiously.
"Yeah, it's called basketball. It's kind of like Bugball, but there's no bugs involved, no losing team wearing the itchy turkey costume, the baskets are not like the ones in Bugball, they're a metal circle with a net attached to it." Anne explained from experience.
The frog children smiled, nodded and murmured in agreement to this as they felt that even though basketball didn't involve bugs or the turkey costume. They felt like it was quite an interesting sport.
"Sounds cool to me." Ivy replied.
"I sort of got a question to ask but it's off topic." said Maddie.
"We're all ears!" said everyone around her.
Maddie looked at Charlie and let out a breath.
"Charlie, back when we fought the Chicka-lisk which I found kind of funny how you ranted at that beast when you made them chicken insults at him. When you tried to shield Anne and more of the residence. Do you know how you conjured up that force field?" asked Maddie curiously.
There was a dead silence. Anne released her arms from him but Charlie wasn't saying a word as Charlie looked clueless. He didn't have an answer and the other kids looked worried as if Maddie answered a personal question that shouldn't have been asked.
"Was that too personal?" asked Maddie suddenly looking guilty.
"I don't know how I did it." Charlie answered finally. "I really don't know."
"Makes me wonder how his eyes and hair turn gold when ever he's in battle, really angry, feeling some happy or sad emotions along with that gold energy around him." Polly blurted out.
"Polly, Maddie, now might not be the time to ask him." said Anne trying to quiet them down.
"Wait, what gold hair, what gold eyes and what gold energy?" asked Charlie now looking surprised.
"Polly!" said Sprig slightly annoyed.
"What?" replied Polly.
"We were going to talk to him about it together with Hop Pop." Anne told her.
"Talk about what?" asked Charlie starting to feel like they know something he doesn't.
They all looked at Charlie and tried to appear consoling but there was a tinge of worry in their eyes. Charlie had no idea about his developing abilities that apparently started when he battled against the toads at Toad Tower along with battling against Sasha. He was only aware of the fact that there was an unknown reason he can create force fields since the battle against the Chicka-lisk.
"Now Charlie, what we're about to ask or talk about is something that's just got us curious and there's no need to freak out." Sprig attempted to reassure.
"Charlie, do you remember when you created that force field when you were attempting to shield Anne, and more of us when the Chicka-lisk was about to burn us like barbecue?" asked Ivy trying not to rise alarm.
Charlie thought for a moment and recalled that night and the fact that he conjured up a force field to block or deflect the monster's fire when it was breathing fire at them like a dragon. He nodded in response.
"Well, ever since your battle at Toad Tower. You've been showing some signs of developing some kind of abilities that we know humans don't have or abilities that amphibians don't have ether as far as we all know. And we were curious yet worried about bringing it up with you." said Sprig appearing nervous to ask.
Charlie looked at all of them with confusion. Did they know this whole time? The residence of Wartwood were there to witness his battle and they all must've known since than.
"Do you know how you were able to do all that?" asked Polly.
"I...I don't know." Charlie stuttered slightly.
"Do you remember what you were feeling when your hair and eyes turned gold and when a gold energy was flashing around you or when you created a force field?" asked Maddie hoping to figure something out. "Not to mention your muscles got bigger."
Charlie was thinking for a moment and he remembered the conflicting or rather normal emotions he was feeling when ever he was sensing he's become stronger than humans should be during the times they mentioned.
"Sometimes I felt irate, enraged, frustration, other times I felt like I accomplished something like reconciling a parent and child to get the parent to accept their kid for who they are and what they want to be, and other times I felt like I was ready to kick it to someone who was endangering those I love." Charlie described.
Anne, Sprig and Polly knew that ether of those times was when Charlie's hair and eyes turned gold, a gold energy was flashing around him during those times Charlie felt any of them emotions. Anne and the Plantars recalled the time during their journey to Newtopia and back when he shown those abilities and saw he was stronger. But Charlie didn't know he was exhibiting those abilities. Maddie suddenly had an idea.
"Charlie, maybe you got some way of bringing out those abilities if you try to find some kind of memory or feeling that could bring out those abilities." Maddie said.
"And how do you suggest we do that?" asked Anne and Charlie in unison.
"Think of something that really makes you angry. Something like how those toads treated you." Maddie suggested.
"Wait. Are you sure this is a good idea? This could get dangerous." said Anne unsure about this.
"Than we should take a few feet of steps back." Maddie advised.
Anne and the rest of them took at least a few steps back by about four feet. Maddie gave Charlie a thumbs up to let him know that all was clear for him to do this. Maddie knew this was only an idea on how to show Charlie's abilities.
Charlie took a moment to remember how the toads from Toad Tower treated him. The lies they told him, the teasing, taunting, the way they treated him like he was a dumb kid or dumb animal that couldn't understand what they tell him, the horrible things they said to him, how they tried to frame him for a crime he didn't commit and how they endangered those he loves.
He cracked his knuckles, popped his neck and shown an irate expression as gold shockwaves have flashed around him and when they did, he let out a mighty scream and his eyes and hair turned gold while the gold energy waves were flashing and glowing all around him. The kids were surprised by seeing this again but also amazed that what Maddie suggested worked.
"Whoa! That actually worked." said Maddie looking amazed.
"You didn't think it would work?" asked Anne.
"it was an idea to try out which I only suggested it." said Maddie.
The gold energy waves and shockwaves have stopped and they saw that Charlie's muscles had already gotten bigger like the first time he turned into this powerful being of himself. They all walked up to him and were amazed at his appearance.
"Charlie, how do you feel?" asked Anne curiously.
"Larger." answered Charlie.
"With those muscles, no kidding." chuckled Polly.
"Do I look any different?" asked Charlie.
"Anyone got a mirror?" asked Anne.
Most of them shook their heads and shrugged but Maddie was the first person to pull out a hand mirror that had a handle. She gave it to Anne so she could show Charlie's reflection.
"Now try not to freak out." warned Anne.
Anne raised the mirror up to Charlie's face by a couple of feet and Charlie saw that as Anne shown his reflection, he was shocked and speechless at what he saw. Seeing his hair and eyes gold for the first time has left him shocked to see this as he grabbed hold of the mirror and got a closer look.
"He's gonna freak out, is he?" said Maddie nervously.
Charlie even looked at his muscles from his arms and felt around his chest and stomach and his muscles did indeed feel bigger or enlarged. He looked as though he was superhuman or someone who was genetically enhanced.
"Oh my God!" said Charlie looking as though he was about to have a panic attack.
"Now calm down, Charlie. It's probably nothing to worry about, I think." Anne attempted to reassure.
"I look so cool!" said Charlie with a grin.
They were caught off guard when Charlie's shock turned to proud admiration. They expected him to terrified or worse. But he was the exact opposite. He was looking as though he gotten a makeover that he really loved the how the results came out.
"I look like I'm some dude from a planet in universe seven." said Charlie with a smile.
"There's other planets and universes in your world?" asked Sprig looking thrilled to learn this.
"Actually, he's talking about something from a science fiction show." said Anne clearing things up. "Maddie, do you have any expertise with this? You have experience in wielding curses, charms and reversing them?"
Maddie smiled and chuckled a bit as she appeared to be showing a creepy side of her for a brief moment but she sighed and looked as though she had bad news.
"Well, you're right about one thing. I do have experience what you've listed but this? Sorry, I don't know anything about this or at least I've never heard anything like this." said Maddie looking him over.
"Really?" asked everyone in unison.
"Hard to believe but yes. But this is something I've never seen before. When I first saw Charlie showing these abilities like with the force fields, the hair and eyes turning gold, his muscles getting bigger than they usually are and the gold energy waves. I've tried looking in all the books I've read that involve anything but I found nothing." Maddie admitted. "I don't have any books that shows anything to do with humans. Before we met Anne, Charlie or any human for that matter, we didn't know humans existed till we met Anne and so on."
"You got us there." replied Anne.
Charlie gave Maddie her mirror back afterwards and she put it away. But than she had an idea.
"Charlie, if you used your emotions to turn gold like that. Than maybe that's the same way with the force field you've conjured up. Something tapped into your emotions. Were you like this before you and Anne came to this world?" asked Maddie hoping to see some answers.
"Nope. No human has such abilities back in our world. When I was with that army of toad dummies from Captain Grime, they didn't put anything in me that would cause this as far as I know. The time I was in a coma. They did the same thing that doctors from our world do when someone is in a coma. They had me in a bed with me on an IV that kept my hydrated and another for liquid nutrients. They changed it often when it was about to be empty." Charlie explained from what he remembered.
"And you said one of them bopped you on your head and that caused you to be in a coma?" asked Ivy.
"Yes." answered Charlie.
Maddie stroked her chin and was thinking as she looked as though she might know something.
"When it comes to magic as far as I know. Magic can only be performed to be temporary until someone who casts it is to remove the affects. If a curse or any form of magic is done on, cast upon or put on someone. Than only the person to puts it on someone or does something with it to someone can remove it like that time Anne and Sprig got cursed and that other time that Charlie got cursed." Maddie explained. "I still hate Barry for what he did to you three, especially when he made Charlie cry."
Maddie clenched a fist and cracked her knuckles loudly as the memory of Barry and his actions seem to have left her with a protective instinct when it comes to her friends or if someone she cares about is suffering from anything identical or similar to what Barry did to those she cares about.
"But I could do something to figure out if Charlie has a curse or spell on him. Just in case if them toads did something that lead up to this. It's basically the same thing I did before so it's nothing different you haven't seen yet." Maddie offered.
"Well, it's up to Charlie." Anne said.
"I'll let her do it. Just to be safe in case anything has been done to me by them toad slime balls." Charlie immediately allowed.
That's when Maddie came over to Charlie and pulled out a bowl of herbs and used a blunt object to crush them up. She took a pinch of it and tossed it at him. A big puff of smoke appeared but to their dismay and oddly relieved minds. There was no aura coming off him when the purple smoke cleared. This already confirmed something.
"Well, them toads didn't do anything involving magic on you. So there's no curse and no spell on you." said Maddie looking relieved.
"But I wonder how he got such abilities? That, and how does he turn that power off?" asked Polly.
"Well, if he thought of something that makes him really angry to active it. Maybe something that makes him feel joy or euphoria could get him to turn it off and get his hair and eyes to turn back to normal. Again, it's just a guess." said Maddie theorizing.
"That would be an easy one." replied Charlie.
Charlie started to think of something that made him feel happy and as he thought about what it was. His eyes and his hair started to immediately change back into their normal color. They all let out a sigh of relief.
"Did it work?" asked Charlie hopefully.
"Your good." answered Anne.
They all breathed a sigh of relief afterwards. That's when Hop Pop, Felicia and Mr. Flour shown up as the kids turned to see them. They figured that they've been out there for a while now since it was getting closer to the evening.
"Hey kids, how's teaching Charlie how to play Bugball going?" asked Hop Pop.
"He may not have played the sport before but I think he'd be a natural athlete at it." answered Anne.
"Sounds like good news." said Felicia with a grin.
"We should head back. It's getting late." said Charlie stretching his back.
"Good idea." said Anne.
"Come on Maddie." said Mr. Flour.
The kids started to leave the Bugball field with the adults. Charlie made sure the other frog children had stuck with their parents the whole time. They knew that this was who Charlie is. Charlie asked Maddie if she knew anything that could help with the origins of his newfound powers but Maddie kindly reminded him that she doesn't know since there's nothing human related or human involved in her books of magic since humans and the people of Amphibia are from two different worlds, both the inhabitants of them worlds not knowing about each other while she stated that Amphibia is just now learning about humans. Which Charlie understood.
"Hey Charlie, you said you know martial arts? Do you know Muay Thai?" asked Anne.
"I've dabbled. And by dabbled, I was taught." Charlie told her.
"I was thinking of teaching Polly some of it and maybe you could come with us as we do so?" Anne asked.
"Sure, but I'm not sparring with you because...well...I just can't bear it if I possibly hurt you or cause any sort of pain towards you." said Charlie blushing.
Anne reached out to take hold of Charlie's hand and he felt like there was some reassurance coming from her.
"Would you feel better if we taught Polly some moves together?" suggested Anne.
"I'm down for it." said Charlie liking the idea.
"Muay Thai?" asked Polly curiously.
"I'll explain it to you tomorrow. And not only that. I'll teach you some moves." answered Anne.
"Hmm. Sounds like fun." said Polly already interested.
