Steven Universe: Alternate Future
Part 4, Chapter 3: I Am My Monster
The people of Beach City thought they were going to have a nice, normal day today. However, since they lived alongside the Crystal Gems, there was no doubt trouble was on its way. Loud stomping could be heard all over town, followed by an ear-piercing roar.
Yellowtail and Sour Cream were the first to notice since they were closest to the water while listening to music on Yellowtail's boat.
The roaring tipped over a trash can Onion was hiding in while Vidalia was painting.
Before anyone knew it, a massive, pink lizardlike monster has suddenly emerged from behind the lighthouse and let out another nasty roar.
"And that should do it." Peridot declared as she and Bismuth repaired the swimming pool's chain-link fence that the Topiary Stevens broke through earlier that day.
"Hey, is it me, or is the sky getting darker?" Bismuth wondered aloud before she could hear something roar.
"What was that?!" Peridot yelled as she jumped up in fright.
While flying above Little Homeworld, Lapis could spot a giant pink monster standing in front of the Crystal Temple. "What?!" With no time to lose, she zoomed back down to her fellow B-team members to tell them what was up. "Guys, we gotta get to the others quick! There's a giant monster on the beach!"
"A giant monster?" Peridot exclaimed. "When was the last time we ever fought one of those?"
"No time to talk, we have to help Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, quick!" Peridot declared before the three made a break for the Warp Pad.
Far away from Beach City on the halved Mask Island, a Watermelon Steven spied on the pink draconic beast through a pair of bamboo binoculars and raced to tell the rest of his kind.
When the Watermelon Steven reached its village, it was greeted by its fellow star-bellied Watermelon Stevens meeting with another group of Watermelon Stevens with eye black beneath their eyes. The two watermelon tribes turned towards the new visitor, who quickly explained in its native language what it saw.
The elder of the star-bellied watermelons stepped forward and began a garbled conversation with the leader of the eye black-wearing watermelons. As soon as the conversation ended, the pair shook hands and explained to their respective tribes what they were going to do. The tribes gasped at the idea of doing such a thing, but in their juicy insides, they knew they had no choice.
"Mr. President, our satellites have picked up a little problem in Delmarva." A black man in Major General attire declared, stepping into the Oval Office as a Hispanic-American man in a suit and tie turned around in his chair and a middle-aged pantsuit-clad woman filed her nails.
"What seems to be the problem, Major General?" President Eduardo Suarez asked Major General Wade Grant.
"It's a monster attack, sir." Wade proclaimed before handing over a tablet showing a bird's eye view of Beach City, and the large beast that had emerged. "Approximately five minutes ago, this rose-colored creature emerged from a small beach house in Beach City and has been doing nothing but roar ever since. But if we don't act fast, it could cause widespread destruction to our country and beyond."
"So we're basically facing off against a kaiju here?" Vice President Theresa Maxwell quipped. "I've seen the movies, just use nuclear power or giant robots."
"But that could just make things worse!" Eduardo exclaimed at the thought. "We must confer with my cabinet! Surely, they'll have the answer!"
"I'm with Terri here, let's nuke 'em!" Secretary of State Finn Ward confidently agreed with the vice president when the cabinet gathered in the Situation Room.
"But that would cause a nuclear apocalypse!" Secretary of Defense Benson Quintel argued. "I say we send in the army!"
"But it's just one goliath!" Secretary of the Treasury Ben Darwin stated. "I'm taking Finn's side, send in the bombs!"
"You're all nuts." Secretary of Agriculture Tulip Dennis complained. "We're not dropping bombs, and we're not sending in the army. And that's final!"
The president's cabinet all began arguing amongst themselves, while the commander in chief took a deep breath before slamming his hand on the table, silencing them all. "There is no need to argue amongst ourselves when the world is at stake here!" he declared. "We need to think of a plan, one that doesn't involve causing more problems than we solve!"
"Señor Suarez is right." Attorney General Clarence Page agreed with his superior. "We must resolve things peacefully and help the people through these tough times. That's what we do, right?"
"Kind of." Craig Levin, the secretary of the interior, answered. "A lot of the time, we just bicker over the smallest of things."
"There ya go Craig, always assuming the worst!" Secretary of Health Benjamin Rouleau complained, causing more arguing.
"We are never going to get things done at this rate." Juniper Winick, the secretary of transportation, whispered to the secretary of housing Steve Peters.
"Can't we all just hug and make up already?" Peters muttered. "I'm getting sick and tired of this."
"Indeed." Secretary of energy Edward Daniels agreed before turning to the Major General. "Major General Grant, care to interject?"
"Gladly." Wade nodded and pulled a gavel out of his pocket to bang on the table, catching the cabinet's attention yet again. "Now then, shall we speak civilly and not enrage each other again?"
"Thank you!" the president exclaimed. "Now, our topic today is the giant monster that has appeared in Delmarva. We have no idea what it is, but it does line up with similar incidents that have occurred over the years."
"He's correct," Theresa added, cuing a secret service agent to put on a projector screen displaying various events that have happened at Delmarva over the years. "Over these past few years, that little town has had run-ins with monsters, the sudden disappearance of a good portion of the world's ocean, a massive green hand causing a mass evacuation, the earthquakes, the string of kidnappings, the giant arms, whatever that bacteriophage was that flooded the town with pink liquid, that invasion of the mysterious village outside of the town, and now this. These have to be connected somehow people, we could be looking at Armageddon here!"
"You're getting paranoid Maxie!" secretary of education Beatrice McHale cried. "I'm sure these are all just coincidences, right?"
"Don't be too sure Bea." Secretary of veteran affairs Chloe Chong shook her head from side to side. "I follow this page called Keep Beach City Weird, and it's led me to believe they are indeed connected to this little vigilante group calling themselves the Crystal Gems, who have been combating these threats for years now."
"I should've known they'd have something to do with this." Suarez declared morosely.
"Why, do you have a history with these people?" Nigel Warburton, the secretary of homeland security, asked the president.
"Why, it's because of them that I'm even the president, to begin with!" the president explained. "They were pretty big supporters of my electoral campaign and helped me beat that Clump weirdo in the polls, but what could they have to do with this?"
"That's what the boys down at Area 42 found out." Secretary of labor Victor Molano stated. "Thanks to some digging of a crashed spaceship and copies of X-ray scans, we can deduce that these are extraterrestrial beings, and all those events that Maxwell mentioned are no doubt connected to them! But do they come in peace, or are they looking to conquer?"
"Who knows?" the secretary of commerce Eugene Quartey responded. "But one thing's for certain, we need to act quickly if we want to survive! Otherwise, we are hopelessly, hilariously outgunned!"
"I knew that they were aliens, but we're all being irrational here!" Eduardo stated. "These Gems are good and kind people, they wouldn't dare try to dissect us all! We have to think things through before we think of a plan!"
"That's your optimism talking Ed." Daniels said to the president. "These Gems have been hiding among us for who knows how long, and we're just going to let them run around and tear this world apart?!"
The cabinet began arguing once more, leaving Eduardo to groan before slinking out of his chair and leaving the Situation Room. "What president doesn't have his own cabinet listen to him?"
"Hey, chin up Eddy." Theresa comforted the president. "Just do what you think needs to be done, no matter what anyone says."
"Thanks for your kind words Terri, but I'm not so sure." Eduardo replied.
"I have a plan." Wade stated. "You make an address to the public, then that'll motivate everyone into working together."
"You're right Wade, why didn't you say that earlier?!" Eduardo cheered before barging back into the Situation Room. "Everyone get ready, I have a speech to make! All those in favor?!"
"Well, you are very good at speeches, it's a good reason why you won by a landslide." Molano nodded and raised his hand. "Aye!"
"Well, I got nothing better to do today." Finn smirked and raised his hand as well. "Aye!"
The rest of the cabinet was at last in agreement. The president shall make a speech about the monster, and they'll see where they'll go from there. As the other secretaries joined in raising hands, Eduardo felt his spirit rise back up and he looked proudly at his cabinet.
"Finally, thank you all." Eduardo declared happily.
Not too far away from the White House, Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth arrived via Warp Pad ready to assist in another epic battle.
"Have no fear!" Bismuth declared while wearing her old suit of armor. "Reinforcements are-wait, what?"
The trio was greeted by a massive hole in the front wall of the beach house with some scraps of clothing lying around and the monster Lapis saw lurking outside, making them fear the worst.
"What happened here?" Peridot muttered fearfully as she picked up the star that was once part of Steven's shirt. "Did that thing eat Steven?!"
"I-I don't know Peri," Lapis replied just as terrified while staring at the monster outside. "Whatever happened, the Gems need our help!"
"I think they sort of already have that covered." Bismuth said as she peeked outside the wreckage to see Connie, Greg, and the Gems looking up at the giant monster. "Hey guys, get outta there before you get squished!"
"Just calm down, take some deep breaths!" Greg said to the pink beast.
"Yeah, relax buddy!" Amethyst added before dodging a swipe of the monster's claws.
"How can things get any worse?" Pearl fretted just as the B-team jumped down to the sand to greet them. "Bismuth, Lapis, Peridot, thank goodness you three came!"
"Connie, Greg, get away from the monster!" Lapis said to the humans.
"Yeah, let us handle clobbering that thing!" Peridot declared as she held up a trash can lid like a shield.
"No." Garnet firmly declared. "Stand down you guys."
"Are you serious, what for?!" Peridot complained.
"And where's Steven?" Lapis asked.
"That is Steven." Garnet finally revealed to the trio's shock while the monster let out a loud roar and bashed its head against the cliff face, causing a rockslide to start falling towards them. "RUN!"
As soon as the group escaped the rockslide, the now monstrous Steven kept on roaring at them from high above, knocking Greg, Peridot, and Amethyst down to the ground.
"He's not listening to us at all!" Amethyst yelled while getting up.
"What did Black Rutile do to him?" Pearl wondered. "First Steven claims he shattered Jasper, then he states we never loved him, and now this is happening! And we still have no idea where that Rutile is!"
"Isn't there a way we can change him back?" Connie asked the Gems.
"We're not sure." Garnet answered while looking down at her feet. "As long as Steven believes himself to be a monster, that's what he'll stay as until we find a way."
"And we better act quick, look!" Greg exclaimed as Steven began stomping towards Beach City. "If I know my monster movies, he's gonna stomp Beach City to the ground!"
"Connie, you do your best to keep the townies safe." Garnet commanded the college-bound girl.
"Right!" Connie complied and saddled up on Lion. "Let's go, Lion!"
Lion let out a roar and leaped towards town, leaving the others to contend with Steven as Garnet kept on giving orders.
"You three, draw Steven to the ocean and hold him there." Garnet said to Bismuth, Peridot, and Lapis. "Amethyst, Pearl, we're whipping out Alexandrite."
"Understood." Pearl nodded before the three fused into Alexandrite and charged towards the monstrous boy, who had now climbed up to the lighthouse to intimidate the confused people of Beach City. Just then, Alexandrite seized Steven from behind and covered his eyes to wrestle him away from Beach City. Ironically, Steven quickly disabled Alexandrite and bashed her against the cliff, causing the massive fusion to separate into the three Crystal Gems.
"Hey Steven, over here!" Peridot yelled at Steven while being carried by Bismuth, who was now flying thanks to Peridot's ferrokinesis. "Now, Bismuth!"
"Roger roger!" Bismuth declared before she turned her fist into a hammer to smack him across the face as she soared through the air. "That should get his attention!"
"We're sorry Steven, it was for your own good!" Peridot loudly apologized. Steven rubbed his pink, scaly face in pain before preparing to lunge towards the ocean at the two flying Gems, before another one held him down. Lapis held out her arms and created a massive whirlpool under Steven that summoned a set of aquatic chains to keep him restrained.
"I've got Steven held down, but he'll no doubt break free soon." Lapis stated as she struggled to keep Steven in chains while he let out a booming roar.
"So, now what?" Greg inquired the alien defenders.
"Well, we can't just leave him like this." Pearl answered.
"We need some way to reach out to Steven, if he's in control of the monster, and appeal to his humanity." Garnet concocted a plan to save their young friend, causing Amethyst to let out a loud sigh.
"You know who I think would be great at that?" Amethyst declared.
"Who?" the others asked the little Quartz.
"STEVEN!" Amethyst yelled in response. Just then, a dark shadow resembling the top portion of a human began looming over the Gems, and when they turned around, they realized that shadow belonged to the Diamonds' warship.
"Yoohoo, Steven!" Spinel called from the ship.
"Is this a bad time?" White Diamond cheerfully asked.
"You gotta be kidding me." Amethyst groaned, standing out from the shocked crew as the ship touched down and a small door opened to allow Spinel, Volleyball, and Lemon Jade to disembark.
"You forgot your foot-thong-thingy!" Spinel called for Steven while holding up his discarded sandal. However, she soon realized Steven currently wasn't there to retrieve it. "OOOOOH-WHAAAAT?!"
"What is that thing?!" Volleyball exclaimed while the three Diamonds exited the ship and saw the monster as well.
"What is going on here?" Yellow Diamond asked regarding the beast before them while Spinel jumped up on her shoulder.
"Why is it that whenever we visit, things are always in disarray?" White added, just as confused about the current situation.
"What even is that?" Blue muttered while protectively holding Volleyball and the Jade fusion in her hands.
"That's Steven." Greg nervously answered, inciting terror from the six visitors from Homeworld.
"WHAT?!" Lemon Jade yelled.
"Impossible!" Yellow and White declared in unison.
"Has he become corrupted?" Blue said just as terrified. "But how?!"
"That's what we wanna know!" Peridot replied loudly.
"How could this have happened?" Volleyball wondered.
"I think punching me may have played a part in this." Spinel theorized.
"Stand back everyone. Let me handle this." Yellow confidently declared while stretching her arms. After a good & loud crack of her knuckles, the ex-tyrant rubbed her hands together and sent out an energy wave to try and change the monster to Steven's usual size. However, the only good that did was shrinking Steven's head, and it only lasted for a few seconds before he roared at the Diamonds.
"Are you kidding?!" Yellow yelled in irritation. "I should've altered his physical form with my powers, what gives?!"
"Temper Yellow, I think he might be resisting." Blue soothingly advised. "Here, let me have a turn." She then conjured up her clouds to ease Steven's pain and blew it straight towards him. Unfortunately for her, it was sent drifting back towards her.
"Watch out!" Yellow exclaimed as she raced to protect Blue and took the cloud for her, causing Yellow and Spinel to laugh like crazy. "Wow, you didn't help either! HAHAHAHAHA!"
"Well, they're hopeless." Lemon Jade grumbled.
"Step aside everyone, allow me to take him on." White confidently suggested as she walked up to Steven. "If I connect with him and he speaks through me, perhaps we might understand what's going on." She stated before closing her eyes as the colors around her changed. "Can you hear me Steven? Just relax and let me in."
Just as quickly, however, White's eyes bolted open and she let out the loudest scream she ever had while falling over before the other Diamonds caught her.
"What happened White, what did you see?" Yellow asked her elder Diamond.
"I-I don't know what I saw!" White hyperventilated, a far cry from the confidence she exhibited not moments ago. "But I only saw nothing but darkness, and this voice shrieked at me that Steven was gone! I don't know what that is, but it seemed to recognize me from when I let Steven control me on Homeworld! And that thing, that's not Steven anymore!"
"Just breathe White, breathe." Blue instructed White while conjuring up a cloud to calm her down while the monster started to break free from the watery prison Lapis had trapped him in.
"I'm sorry, but I can't hold him for much longer!" Lapis apologized hurriedly as Steven's eyes and horns began to glow as he let out his loudest roar yet, sending the Diamond ship falling over and nearly splitting Garnet into Ruby and Sapphire.
"Yeah, it's official, we're toast!" Amethyst yelled. Just then, it seemed like their prayers for help have been answered as a horn sound was heard from the coast and what seemed to be a big bamboo battleship manned by Watermelon Stevens sailed into view.
"What the crack are those?!" Spinel cursed at the sight of the ship.
"Are those the Watermelon Stevens?!" Pearl yelled.
"I'm sorry, the what now?" Yellow asked.
"Long story, but they tried to bury me once and had some nice flowers prepared for my grave!" Amethyst explained as the Gems watched the Watermelon Stevens leap into action.
Five Watermelon Stevens jumped off the ship with hang-gliders on their backs and soared towards Steven. The platoon then detached their gliders and began grappling themselves to Steven via some kind of a harness that allowed them to move in three dimensions and unsheathing attached blades to attack him with. Unfortunately, Steven spun around wildly, causing the sentient watermelons to drop into the sea and in the process, smashing the battleship with his tail and causing it to sink.
As the Watermelon Stevens desperately swam for shore, some weren't as lucky. Out of all the ship's crew, one was floating on a piece of wreckage and grabbing onto the hand of another Watermelon Steven, garbling something along the lines of "I'll never let you go." before its companion let itself fall to the bottom of the ocean.
"Well, they turned out to be both out of nowhere AND pointless." Yellow quipped as the Watermelon Stevens apologized profusely for their failures.
"What were you guys even doing trying to stop Steven?" Greg asked one of the Watermelons. Even though it wasn't speaking English, the ex-rock star seemed to understand what the creature was saying. "You thought it was attacking Steven, so you built a whole ship to help out?"
"I hate to break it to you little guys, but that thing's not attacking Steven." Garnet declared. "It is Steven. He let his emotions overtake him, and it somehow caused him to turn into that."
The Watermelons gasped just as Connie returned to the scene still on Lion's back. "Everyone's getting ready to evacuate." She declared while getting off the reanimated feline. "How's everything here? And what are these things supposed to be?"
"This is going to be a long day." Peridot groaned with dread while the monster glared ferociously at the Crystal Gems and their allies.
Back in Washington, the president and his cabinet gathered in the Oval Office in preparation for Eduardo's speech. Maxwell and Grant stood by Suarez's side while the other cabinet members stood behind them, and at the center was a nervous-looking Eduardo.
"Okay, showtime everyone." Eduardo said to himself before one of the secret service agents turned on the video camera, and he began to speak. "My fellow Americans. I have organized this emergency address because we are facing a crisis that could become catastrophic if left unchecked." He declared. "I am of course speaking of a massive lizard monster that has recently appeared in the town of Beach City, Delmarva."
"We currently have no idea as to where this creature came from, but recent events gathered via satellite have allowed us to connect it to a vigilante group dubbing themselves the Crystal Gems, who have been living among us for thousands of years."
"Gems?" Beckham Jordan asked while watching the address from his treadmill. "Steven and Spinel must be in trouble!"
"Beck, you hearing the news?!" Matt Monroe exclaimed while he and Makoto Fuji entered the star basketball player's personal gym.
"Watching it right now!" Beckham replied while footage of Alexandrite and Lapis restraining the pink beast began to play. "Are we living in a monster movie or something?"
"Seems like it." Makoto answered.
"Fear not citizens, we are working tirelessly to find a solution."
"Mommy, is the monster going to eat us?" Chloe said as she held her mother Yvonne tightly.
"Who knows sweetie?" Yvonne replied just as scared as her autistic daughter. "Would you like the weighted blanket?"
"I was gonna ask you the same thing." Chloe responded.
"If there's one thing our country has exhibited during my term so far, we are a tenacious bunch who won't back down without a fight!"
"Oh dear, I knew this day would come." The mysterious Officer gravely informed with ominously snake-like eyes before he retreated into the shadows, followed by a mysterious rattling sound.
"We are strong, we are united, we are like one big team!"
At the World Defense Agency headquarters, Bane Jones stoically watched the address while his fellow agents and soldiers in service to the Agency were in full panic mode.
"Jones, how are you staying so calm?!" a WDA corporal asked the secret agent.
"It pays to keep a cool head, Corporal Fleming." Jones answered the corporal. "If I know that Lapis and her mates, I know they'll find a way to light our darkest hour."
"And does a team ever quit?!"
In the opulent mansion of film director Neil Michaels, Neil was dressed in a bathrobe and drinking high-class coffee from a wine glass when the address began, and he let out a big spit of caffeine at the footage of the monster attacking Beach City. Without a moment to hesitate, Neil snapped his fingers and a butler dialed up a number on the phone before handing it to him.
"Hello, Labyrinth Productions?" Neil spoke into the phone. "Have I got a film pitch for you!"
"If there's anything my predecessor once said, I believe this quote should be the most fitting. Nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change."
"So is this what Greg has been up to since he left us?" Thomas DeMayo asked as he and his wife Gloria watched the address from their Florida Island timeshare. "Hanging out with aliens or whatever they are?"
"Well, at least we know he's doing alright." Gloria said while sipping a cup of tea.
"This isn't the first time we faced a problem related to these Gems." Eduardo continued his speech while a secret service agent snuck up behind him. "And if we work together, it hopefully might be the last."
"Uh, sir?" the agent whispered for the president.
"Pardon?" Eduardo asked the agent, who began whispering into his ear. "Interfering with the satellite feed? How?" The agent continued whispering. "Hacking drone?"
Before anyone in the Oval Office knew it, the video began turning static and cutting the President's speech short.
"What is the meaning of this?!" President Suarez exclaimed before his image was quickly replaced by that of Black Rutile, standing in complete darkness with a spotlight above her.
"Greetings to the civilians of this backwater planet. I am Black Rutile, soon to be supreme ruler of the Gem race." Black Rutile coldly introduced herself to her captive audience. "I come to you today because you are faced with a crisis that has been right under your noses for thousands of years now, and it can all be blamed on the Crystal Gems."
And it wasn't just television that Black Rutile was sending her message on. Computers and smart devices around the country were hearing what she had to say. And despite the secret service's best efforts, there seemingly was no way of shutting it off.
"They have been living among your people since the dawn of man, and have brought numerous world-ending threats along with." Black Rutile continued. "From loads of monsters that were formerly members of their kind, to insane terraformers that stole the ocean for selfish purposes followed by nearly drowning thousands once they returned the water to Earth, a superweapon made from the remains of their own kind that remains buried under the Earth as we speak, repeated counts of abductions and the near-genocide of all organic life."
Even other parts of the world had received the Rutile's speech, all in their native languages too.
"But now we are faced with a new problem, and it's all thanks to one Gem: Pink Diamond. It's because of her that this monstrosity plaguing the Earth at this moment is running amok and the Crystal Gems have done nothing to stop it, or her for that matter." She declared, remaining perfectly emotionless the entire time. "Should you believe this planet is worth saving, something must be done about the Crystal Gems, or you will suffer the consequences."
"That will be all." Black Rutile concluded before the screen blinked off, leaving nothing but pitch black. All that remained were hushed whispers among the people of Earth about these visitors from beyond the stars, and how it seemed they're not alone after all.
As for Black Rutile, her hacking drone detached itself from the satellite and fell to Earth like a meteorite, crashing down in front of her cave.
When Black Rutile stepped outside to pick it up, she had a wicked smile on her face as she turned to her three pawns. "Let Phase 3 begin."
It's official, there might be no saving Steven, at least for now, and Black Rutile has all but turned humanity against the Gems. But enough about the ramifications of her actions, next time this witch gets her hands dirty once again and come over to Beach City for a rematch with the Gems. And this time, she's bringing back Lepidolite, which means we might get some fusions to counter her. Just like Black Rutile said, that will be all.
