Sarah sent Jareth a shy smile as they sat next to each other at a table loaded down with half full goblets, nearly empty pitchers of mead and wine, empty plates with only the remnants of left over food, and a vase of flowers traditional for fae weddings including peony, lavender, and primrose. The party had included their closest friends and even Rhihart had made the journey north to be there. However it was well after midnight and the party had been going for several hours. There had been music, dancing, food, and drink to go around. Toby was even allowed a glass of elven wine in celebration.
Jareth caught Sarah's smile and squeezed her hand, leaning forward to press a kiss to her lips. She met him halfway, enjoying the warmth and tingling feeling it gave her. When they pulled apart, Sarah kept her head close to his. "Do you suppose we could sneak out?" she whispered.
He chuckled. "Eager to consummate our marriage, Cariad?"
She gave him a look with hooded eyes. "Maybe."
Jareth glanced around at the others who were still talking and pushed his chair back. Noticing the movement, Tuathal and Rhihart looked over. "Leaving us, brother?" Rhihart asked, a smirk evident on his face.
"It is well after midnight, Rhihart, and we've had a very long day," Jareth replied calmly as he helped Sarah to her feet.
"I'm sure," Tuathal chuckled. "Come Rhihart, I think it's best if we leave them alone."
"Surprisingly mature of you, Tuathal," Jareth commented.
Tuathal and Rhihart rose from their seats as well. Celeste had already gone to bed a half hour ago after wishing them congratulations. "Oh no, Jareth, you underestimate me. I fully intend to move into my private parlor where I have my best bottles." At this he lifted his glass of dark amber whiskey and downed the last of it. "Rhihart and I have much more to catch up on," he swayed slightly as he spoke.
"That's right," Rhihart agreed, nodding forcefully enough that his golden crown slid down his brow a half an inch.
"I'll leave you to it then, your Majesties," Jareth rolled his eyes. He and Sarah knew perfectly well that the two monarchs would be talking about them while continuing to get even more drunk, but it didn't truly bother them that much.
"Come on, I want to check in with Toby real quick before we head up," Sarah tugged his arm and he followed over to the nearby table where Toby, Inara, Palath, Freyr, and Andrius were chatting. Freyr and Andrius, both Goblin Kingdom nobility, had taken an instant liking to Toby after hearing of his deeds during the Battle of the Goblin Kingdom. Both were also fairly young for fae standards, younger than Jareth at least.
Toby turned in his seat as his sister approached. "Hey Sar!" A wide grin was on his face and he held a hand of playing cards. A small pile of macaroons were in the middle of the table. Apparently he was teaching the Underground crowd how to play poker.
Sarah eyed his cards and the young teen for a moment. "Teaching them how to gamble? Really Tobes?"
"Oh I assure you that we already know how to gamble," Freyr stated. "In fact just the other day…" he trailed off and Jareth interrupted him.
"I'm sure it's a riveting tail Freyr, but we've just come by to say that the party is breaking up. Everyone is headed to bed."
"Bed? But the night is young, your Majesties!" Andrius protested.
Sarah rolled her eyes. "You all are free to do as you wish, but I'm guessing the palace staff want to get in here and clean up. Oh, and Toby," she put a hand on his shoulder. "We're starting up our research again tomorrow."
Toby groaned and slouched down in his chair. "Do we have to?"
Sarah gave him an unimpressed look. "You've had a pretty good vacation from research, Tobes. You had the past couple of days with the wedding.
"I would certainly like to read up some more on the books we found in Cathair na Solais," Inara stated, looking up from her cards.
"Fine," Toby grumbled. "But not before noon."
Freyr made a disgusted face at that. "I'll vouch for that!" he raised his goblet and took a long drink.
"No alcohol for you," Sarah pointed at her brother.
"Yeah, yeah, I haven't drank anything all night except that elven wine. Trust me a little, would ya?" He turned back to his cards.
"Sorry Toby," Sarah said quietly. "I do trust you." She squeezed his shoulder again before letting go and twining her arms through Jareth's again. "Well, have fun and don't stay up all night."
With that, the newly married couple exited the ballroom together. The staff of Éclat Castle were already starting to clean up, working around the poker table. Jareth leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of Sarah's head. "I love you," he said.
Sarah looked up into his crystal blue eyes. "I love you too," she replied and paused their walk to reach up with one hand, cup his face and return the kiss. He pressed down into her, his teeth nipping at her lower lip. She let out a small moan and allowed him entry as she pressed herself closer to him and her hand moved back to grip his hair, tugging slightly. His hands found their way to her waist and wrapped around her.
She pulled back for a moment, taking a gasp of air as Jareth's mouth moved down to her neck. "Jareth," she whispered. "We should…. Should move to your room," she gasped then as he bit down hard enough to leave teeth marks.
"Mmm, you're probably right," he murmured against her skin. "And it's our room now, Cariad."
However at that moment, a cool breeze swooped down the hallway, making the tapestries flutter and the chandeliers sway. "What…?" Sarah looked around, trying to figure out what was happening. The breeze grew stronger and a loud crack of thunder echoed in the hall! The candles in the chandelier blew out and Sarah reached under the sash at her waist for the knife she'd stashed there.
Jareth looked down at the small blade clenched in her fist. "You had a knife on you during our wedding?" he asked.
"Yeah, too much has happened to us. I wanted to be prepared," she looked around the dark hall, her pressed against Jareth's.
"Sexy," he purred. However he too had pulled his saber from its sheath at his side. Unlike her, it had been part of his wedding outfit since he was both a king and a former military officer.
Sarah smirked, but elbowed him. "Not really the time, dear."
They stood back to back in the hall, eyeing the shadows for almost a full minute. Sarah was about ready to say that maybe someone had left a door open, when a flash of lightning and a crack of thunder echoed deafeningly through the hall again. They both shielded their eyes, and when they blinked them open again, a woman with long flowing dark hair, pale skin, and a long tartan dress reminiscent of what women in the Aboveground wore in Scotland several hundred years ago. Her hair whipped around her and her skirts fluttered in the wind blowing down the hall. "Ye thought ye could hide from me?" she asked in a low voice thick with Scottish brogue. Her head tilted to one side, but her eyes remained fixed on Sarah. "Run all ye want, ye boggin bodach, ye'll never be free of me!" she screeched the last few words.
"Who are you!?" Sarah shouted, keeping her knife pointed at the woman, her whole body shifted into a fighting stance.
The woman laughed. "Yer worst nightmare. I'll make ye regret ever bein born!"
"Declare yourself, woman!" Jareth growled. "What is it you want!?"
"What I want?" she glared between Jareth and Sarah. "What I want is my bloody birthright! I was supposed ter be Lady o' the Labyrinth! Not ye!" She screamed and the wind picked up a notch. Another clap of thunder echoed down the hall. "And I will have my birthright! But no' before I make ye suffer fer darin' to challenge me! Yer brother's life will do fer a start!"
With that, her form spun and an enormous gust of wind blew her towards them! Jareth and Sarah were forced to cover their faces as the wind stung their eyes. A cold force swept through them, making Sarah and Jareth stagger backwards and cough and splutter as their lungs struggled to suck in air. The piercing cold only lasted a moment though before it continued racing down the hall towards the ballroom they'd just exited. "TOBY!" Sarah gasped and staggered as she ran back down the hall.
Screams could be heard a moment later and Sarah picked up her pace. When she reached the ballroom, Toby was flat on his back on the floor, fending off an invisible foe. Icy wind whipped around them just as it had in the hall. Palath, Andrius, and Freyr all had their weapons drawn, but there was nothing substantial to fight off. Inara was kneeling beside Toby though. One hand pressed down on the middle of his chest and the other pressed against his forehead. He struggled against her, but her strength was greater than his. Sarah rushed to their side, desperate to fend off whatever was making her brother shudder and scream his throat raw. Inara looked up at Sarah and her eyes were glowing with power. "Help me," was all she said.
Sarah felt a force guiding her hands to mirror Inara's, one on Toby's chest and the other on the crown of his head. She recognized the warm inviting power coursing through her and the smell of honeysuckle, fresh cut grass, and petrichor. The Labyrinth. Sarah didn't know what she was doing, but the Labyrinth guided her, following Inara's lead as they entered Toby's mind. A dark churning mass swirled inside him and Inara borrowed power from Sarah and the Labyrinth to batter at it. The mass shuddered and fought back, but Inara inhaled deeply, pulling even more power into her core before blasting it all at once at the dark mass! It fractured into tiny pieces and a shrieking sound filled the air as the piercing cold wind left through a shattered window.
Once everything had settled, both Inara and Sarah slumped sideways. Warm arms wrapped around Sarah to keep her from hitting her head. She tried to see who had caught her, but everything was blurred and darkness quickly filled her vision. Sarah didn't remain unconscious long though. She could feel someone holding her, their arms wrapped around her torso and cradling her head. She blinked awake, a blurry blond head hovering over her. "Jareth?" she mumbled.
"Sarah! You're awake! How do you feel?"
"Fine, I guess?" she pushed herself up and Jareth helped to prop her up. Looking around, she saw that she was still in the ballroom at Éclat Castle. "Toby!" she burst out, frantically searching for him. Her eyes landed on his prone form being tended to by Healer Watts a short distance away, and she tried to scramble towards him.
"He'll be fine, Cariad," Jareth reassured, pulling her back against him. "You need to worry about yourself a little."
"Healer Watts?" Sarah called out to the physician to confirm.
He turned to face her, a small reassuring smile on his face. "It is as King Jareth says. Tobias should be fine thanks in large part to you and Princess Inara's quick intervention. I would still like to get him to the healing wing to monitor him as he wakes."
Freyr and Andrius, with direction from Healer Watts, carefully lifted Toby and carried him out of the ballroom. Healer Watts then turned his attention to another still form that Sarah hadn't seen till now. "Inara?" she asked.
"Yes," Jareth answered. "She over exerted herself while fighting for your brother." He looked down at her and she met his cool blue eyes. "It was lucky that you jumped in to help her. She might have been grievously injured otherwise." He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
Healer Watts looked over from where he was directing two servants to lift Inara and take her to the healing wing as well. "You, my dear, should be on bedrest for tonight and tomorrow morning," he ordered. "You appear fine, but you did faint from magic depletion. Rest and sleep will do you good." He turned to lock eyes with Jareth. "Is that understood, your Majesty?" His tone was firm and his eyes narrowed.
Jareth's cheeks turned pink, but he didn't say anything as he nodded and started to help Sarah to her feet. She leaned heavily on him as they made their way out of the ballroom . Healer Watts followed them, but turned off to the healing wing with a wave goodnight and a notice that he would be by in the morning to check in on her. The newly married couple nodded and continued on to their rooms (Jareth's usual rooms at Éclat Castle) where Jareth tucked her in and then crawled in behind her, wrapping her in his arms.
The next morning, Healer Watts kept his promise and visited the newly married couple as their breakfast was being delivered. "Your Majesties," he bowed to them both and Sarah had a startling moment when she realized that she was a majesty now. Healer Watts turned towards Sarah. "How are you feeling? Any weakness? Fatigue? Nausea?" He had set his bag of potions down beside him and was rifling through it as he spoke.
Sarah sat down at the small breakfast table in Jareth's chambers, wrapping her blue paisley silk robe tighter around her body and tying it off. "No, I felt more tired than usual last night, but I'm back to normal this morning. How are Toby and Inara?"
"They are both doing fine," he replied as he pulled out a greenish blue looking potion in a small glass vial. "Princess Inara woke early this morning and is currently recuperating in her own rooms." He set the vial down on the their breakfast table and then muttered in incantation so that his hands were glowing a familiar gold color. "May I?" he asked. Sarah nodded and he began to run his hands slowly over her, hovering a couple of inches above her skin. He paid particular attention to her head and temples.
"And Toby?"
"Tobias is still in my care in the healing wing. However he is recovering. I gave him a dreamless sleep potion after he woke from a nightmare, but that isn't surprising. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he continues to have nightmares after this. Whatever was done to him affected his thalamus greatly and it will take time to recover fully."
"Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked.
Healer Watts shook his head as he finished scanning her. "No, unfortunately. His brain will have to work through it on his own. However you can help ground him in reality when he wakes. And I would encourage him to meditate before sleeping and to keep a dream journal to write everything out in. It will help him process the dreams better."
Sarah nodded. "I'll encourage him to do that too."
"As for you, Mrs. LeRoi," he paused with a quizzical look on his face. "Sorry, have you decided what name you'll use now that you're married?"
Sarah looked over at Jareth who was eating a strawberry and shrugged. "It's up to you, my dear."
"I'll keep Williams for now until I decide," she declared.
"Of course, Mrs. Williams," Healer Watts nodded. "Anyway, you appear fine. Your magic levels are stable, but you should avoid any large spells for a few days. Also, drink this," he offered her the greenish blue vial he'd pulled out of his bag earlier. "It'll help your body recover after the drain it experienced last night."
"Thank you," Sarah nodded. "For everything." The elf gave them each another bow before gathering his things and leaving.
Sarah and Jareth were left alone with their breakfast. "You know what? I think I'm going to go with a hyphenation, maybe LeRoi-Williams. Or do you think Williams-LeRois sounds better?" She looked up at him as she leaned forward to grab a strawberry, and saw him giving her a smirk. "What?"
"We're married," he answered quietly. "And pair bonded. Can you feel the connection?"
Sarah paused with the strawberry halfway to her mouth. Now that he mentioned it, she could feel something… something that wasn't her and wasn't the Labyrinth. It was this warm feeling, like being wrapped in his arms. And even though there was no actual smell to it, there was still a lingering sense of Jareth's cool winter forest scent. On top of all that, there was an excitement and adoration that was all Jareth. She smiled and tried to send her love for him back. "Yes," she said. "Is this how it will always be now?"
"Yes, however it is said that the connection only grows stronger as the years go on." A fond smile graced his lips as he poured more coffee for them both. "I can remember my parents communicating without speaking. Whenever they didn't want me to know what they were saying they would use their bond. Of course, I didn't catch on to that until much later. Always thought they were using magic or were just so used to each other that they didn't need to speak to understand each other."
"Were you close with your parents?" Sarah asked as she helped herself to hot oatmeal, blue berries, and brown sugar.
"To mother, yes. Father was a little more distant, but he was very good at setting me tasks to prepare me for ruling. I didn't always appreciate it then, but now I can look back and see it as his version of caring." He scooped up some oatmeal and blew on it before eating.
They were quiet for a while as they ate their breakfast. However once finished, Sarah quietly asked, "So what do we do about this new problem?"
"New? I don't think this is new at all. It's our old problem made more prominent."
"You think so?"
"Positive," he nodded. "The woman last night mentioned wanting her due, to be Lady of the Labyrinth. That and she did look similar to the drawing Remy made for us based on Inara's description."
Sarah's eyes grew wider with understanding. "And Inara mentioned a connection between you and those who killed my dad and Karen!" She could feel a sense of pride seep across their bond from him. "Do you have a long lost sister I don't know about?"
Jareth frowned and shook his head. "I don't know. It's possible, I suppose. My father was loyal to my mother beyond a doubt, but prior to their bonding he did tend to, how do you mortals say it, get around? We have Rhihart as proof of that."
"Perhaps your brother knows more?" she suggested.
"Couldn't hurt to ask," he shrugged.
With that, they finished their coffee and breakfast then dressed for the day. To her surprise, a maid showed up to assist Sarah in dressing once she entered the small attached dressing room just for her use. "Really, I don't need help," she insisted for the third time. However the oread nymph maid continued to stare at her with her arms crossed over her chest, an unimpressed look on her face.
"I realize that you are from the Aboveground, Ma'am, and unused to such things, but for the Lady of the Labyrinth and wife of the Goblin King to go about in common garb is unheard of. I would be the laughing stock of Éclat Castle!"
"But it has nothing to do with you," Sarah pointed out, confused.
"But everyone knows I have been assigned to you, so it will not matter what the truth is, they will all believe it to be negligence on my part!"
Sarah hesitated, as much as she just wanted to dress herself and not make a fuss, it seemed she would be causing a larger mess by refusing the poor oread nymph assigned to her. She sighed, "Fine, I give in, but nothing too fancy."
The young nymph smiled and got to work pulling out clothing options and making suggestions for her hair. By the time she as finished, Sarah was dressed in pale greens and ivory. She wore a loose flowing gown similar to what wealthy women in ancient Rome would have worn. It had a long v-neck and small metal clips that held the shoulder together, but let fabric flow down her back, giving the illusion of a cape almost. An intricate silver belt at her waist gave her shape definition. Her hair was pulled back at the base of her skull and Selini (what the nymph had introduced herself as) had put a fine silver comb with diamonds and emeralds in to add decoration and also help keep the hair in place. Sarah had to admit that she did look good without looking too ostentatious.
When she finally left the dressing room to meet Jareth, his eyes grew wide as he took her in. "Is this what took so long?" he gestured at her outfit and she could feel a combination of confusion and awe come across their bond.
"No, I had a small disagreement with my lady's maid." She strode forward and took his arm.
"Ah, I see," he murmured. "I used to have similar disagreements with my valet, however we eventually came to an agreement. Because I am easily able to dress myself with magic, he would only assist for more formal occasions such as balls, important dignitary visits, and the like."
"And our wedding?" Sarah smiled as they walked down the hall towards where Rhihart was staying.
"And our wedding," he grinned and brought their intertwined hands up so he could kiss the back of hers.
Upon reaching Rhihart's quarters, Jareth knocked loudly. There was a grumbling inside before the door was wrenched open, revealing a rumpled and grumpy looking Rhihart. "What do you want? Do you know what time it is?" He turned towards Sarah with a kinder look. "No offense to you, my dear. Your new husband does enjoy tormenting me after a night of drinking though."
Jareth scoffed. "You sobered up after the attack last night."
"Well yes, that was rather sobering." He stepped back to let them into his rooms. They chose to sit together on the love seat in the front parlor. The coffee table in front of them held tea fixings along with Rhihart's breakfast of toast and a poached egg. He sat down opposite them, making sure his red robe was closed tightly. "However," he continued. "Tuathal and I broke into his whiskey reserves after the commotion had been resolved and he ordered extra guard duties throughout the castle."
"So you sobered up, ordered more guards, then got drunk again?" Sarah gave him a judging look. "Seems kind of counterintuitive."
He shrugged. "Seemed like a good idea at the time. That and we needed to properly toast your nuptials." He grinned as he picked up his teacup. Sarah rolled her eyes and Jareth chuckled.
"And telling embarrassing stories about me had nothing to do with it, I'm sure," Jareth commented.
"Noooo, not at all," Rhihart waved off his comment and then took a large bite of toast with jam. "Anyway," he mumbled, toast crumbs sticking to his goatee. "Why are you here so early? I figured that after the healer saw to Sarah this morning, you two would be busy seeing to each other all day." He winked.
"That is disturbing," Sarah crinkled her nose. "I really don't want to hear my new brother-in-law speculating on my sex life."
"A thousand apologies, my dear," he bowed his head towards her. "Unfortunately I have a feeling you are going to get caught in the middle of our brotherly ribbings more often than not. Shall I apologize profusely now? Or would you like them as it happens?"
"You're insufferable," Sarah replied.
Rhihart toasted her with his teacup. "To insufferability!" he took a long drink.
"Yes well," Jareth continued. "We came to get your opinion on a matter of some importance."
"Oh? Do tell," Rhihart's eyes were wide with interest, but he continued eating his egg and toast.
"We are trying to figure out if it is possible that our father may have had children with other women."
Rhihart raised an eyebrow and swallowed his bite of egg and toast. "Why do you ask?"
"Just answer first. I promise I'll tell you my theory after," Jareth leaned forward so his elbows were resting on his knees.
"Alright, alright," Rhihart muttered. He turned towards Sarah as he spoke next. "I'm fifty years older than him; you'd think he'd show some respect."
"Rhihart," Jareth deadpanned.
The older fae sighed and rolled his eyes. "Okay, I think we both know that father had affairs with other women before he married your mother. And given my presence," he gestured to himself dramatically. "I think it is safe to assume that yes, he had other children. Now, how many of those were fae or half human or half elf, I cannot say. Though, as is obvious, we are the only two who have been legitimized."
"Why do you think that is?" Sarah asked.
"Hmm," Rhihart stroked his goatee. "Probably because we were the only two born of noble blood on both sides, if I had to guess. Or…" he trailed off.
"Or what?" Sarah asked.
"Or the other supposed children he had were of mixed blood and he may not have deemed them worthy of acknowledgement. Especially if the child was conceived with a mortal woman." Rhihart frowned as he glanced over at Sarah. "Our father was not well known for respecting mortals. He never treated them with outright disrespect, but…"
"But they were beneath him," Jareth finished for his brother, a frown on his face as well.
"To put it bluntly, yes," Rhihart nodded.
Sarah sighed and rolled her eyes. "I'm getting kind of sick of the prejudice for mortals inherent through the Underground."
"If it's any consolation," Jareth said leaning toward Sarah so that their shoulders touched. "It is becoming less and less common and no one who you claim friend has ever held those prejudices." He closed the remaining distance between them and kissed the top of her head.
She closed her eyes and smiled before grabbing hold of his hand and squeezing it gently. "Thank you, Jareth," she remarked. "That does help a little."
He left his hand in hers as he pulled back and turned to look at his brother again. "Back to the matter at hand," he said. "Do you think it's possible that our father may have had other children that he left unclaimed?"
"No, I don't think it's a possibility," Rhihart said. "I think it's an actuality. Now, why do you want to know, brother?" He set his empty breakfast plate aside and leaned back in the chair with his teacup.
"We suspect that the individual after Sarah and those close to her, may be one of these children."
Rhihart's eyes widened and he sat up straighter. "You're serious? What would be the purpose?"
"I'm not sure yet, but I can guess that it's related to the power and prestige that comes with being Lady of the Labyrinth."
Rhihart nodded absently. "Yes, that does make sense." He sipped at his tea then asked, "What do you plan to do?"
Jareth shook his head. "I'm not sure precisely. However we need to find her before she does any more harm."
"But she could be anywhere! And anyone!"
"Yes, I realize that. Which is why I'm going to need your help."
"Whatever I can do for you," he nodded.
"Excellent, because I already have a plan," Jareth smiled.
With that, they let Rhihart finish his tea and dress for the day before going to find Tuathal and Celeste. They filled in the two monarchs on what had transpired and Jareth revealed his plan. Rhihart was to stay in the Underground and with Celeste's help, go through all of the archived messages and records their father had left behind. He was hoping that some evidence of who Belenus had had affairs with would show up. Meanwhile, he, Sarah, Toby, and Inara would travel Aboveground to a townhome Jareth owned in Edinburgh, Scotland. This would become their homebase of sorts as they did their own research and looked into mortal women who may have fallen under King Belenus's thrall.
Tuathal nodded as Jareth finished detailing his plan. "A solid theory," he stated. "And it would hide you again from this woman who has been hunting you."
"Yes, that did come to mind as well," Jareth nodded.
"Then all that's left before you leave is to certify young Tobias's health," Tuathal stated.
"Yes," Sarah said. "We were going to visit him right after this."
"Well, if I don't see you before you leave, then good luck!" Tuathal said with a smile. "And keep in touch."
"Of course," Jareth waved him off.
Celeste rolled her eyes at him. "It's just as much to make sure you're all okay as it is to relay any information found. Now come here." Jareth sighed but moved towards her. She wrapped him in a tight hug. "Be careful, won't you?"
"Yes, dear Celeste. I promise," he replied in a quieter, more serious voice.
They pulled away and Sarah was next. She received a hug from both Celeste and Tuathal along with promises to be careful. They left the leaders of Avalon then to go to the healer's wing where they found Inara sitting half asleep in a chair near Toby's bedside. "Inara?" Sarah gently reached out to the elf's shoulder.
The young elf startled awake and blinked to clear her vision. "Oh, Sarah, King Jareth. I'm sorry. I was up most of the night."
"Why were you awake all night?" Sarah asked.
Inara glanced down at Toby who was slumbering peacefully, then back up at his sister. She blushed a little. "Well, you see... When I was in Toby's mind fighting off the attacker last night, I formed some kind of connection with him. I can… sense what he's feeling in a way, and he only just calmed enough for me to sleep."
Sarah and Jareth's faces mirrored each other in their surprised looks. "You can tell what he's feeling?" Sarah asked, a little shocked.
"Well… yes," Inara nodded. "During the entire night he was restless and terrified, so I came to help him calm down. Healer Watts came by about a half hour ago and I told him of what had happened. He and I thought it might have had something to do with how deep into his mind I went in order to root out his attacker. Anyway, he gave Toby a potion to help calm him and let him sleep dreamlessly, and it was finally working just now."
"You'll have to forgive us then, Inara," Jareth said. "We didn't mean to interrupt your sleep. However we've developed a plan in which we need to move Toby."
She sat up straighter and her eyes widened. "What? Where?"
"We're taking him with us to the Aboveground. We think he'll be safer there now that the attacker knows we're here in the Underground," he replied.
"I'm coming with," she stated immediately, her hands clutching at the blanket covering Toby.
Jareth eyed the young elf's actions and nodded. "Not to worry, I had planned on bringing you with us. You have been extremely helpful and so long as you wish to, we'd like you to continue helping us."
Inara seemed to relax then and nodded. "Yes, okay. I would be honored to continue helping you. When do we leave?"
"As soon as possible. Pack what you need and we shall leave directly after."
"But how will we transport Toby? He only just fell into a potion induced deep sleep. He will not wake for some time."
"I know a spell to help carry him with us," Jareth assured her.
She nodded again and looked back down at Toby's peaceful face. She squeezed his arm before letting go and rising to her feet. "I shall meet you back here as soon as I can," she stated before hurrying off to pack her bag.
They waited till she was gone before Sarah turned to Jareth and said, "Well, that was unexpected. Did she accidentally pair bond them?"
Jareth shook his head. "I don't know. Admittedly, the result seems to be similar, but what she did was very different from how a pair bond is initiated. Perhaps we'd best speak with Healer Watts?"
Sarah nodded. "Would you mind fetching him? I'd like to stay with Toby."
Jareth bowed his head slightly and nodded. "Of course, my dear." With that, he walked away towards the Healer's office.
Sarah sat down in Inara's vacated chair and picked up his limp hand. He looked so peaceful as he slept, however she was worried about the damage caused to his mind. She hoped his road to recovery would not be too turbulent. A minute later, Jareth and Healer Watts walked over. "Lady Sarah," Healer Watts bowed towards her. "It is good to see you again. I understand you wish to speak about your brother?"
"Yes, we are planning to travel to the Aboveground with him this morning yet and I wish to know what to be aware of in regards to his condition?"
Healer Watts nodded. "I understand. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly how much damage was caused. However based on my scans from last night and this morning, and thanks in part to the potions I've given him, he is starting to recover. Princess Inara told you of her connection with him?"
Sarah and Jareth nodded affirmatively.
"I suspect that her connection with him may be helping the healing process. Her unique powers may be exactly what he needs to make it through this. However he is still going to have some post-traumatic issues. I will gather some dreamless sleep potion to send with you. I want him to use it for the rest of the week, and then use only half doses for another four nights before stopping all together. It can be an addictive potion and have negative consequences if used continuously for long periods of time. In order to supplement it, I'd recommend having him and Princess Inara do meditations together in the evening before he goes to sleep. If he can practice clearing his mind, it may help with the night terrors that will most likely come back after stopping the dreamless sleep.
"I warn you," he said softly. "He's in for a rough road, which means you all are, in a way. You're going to need patience with him. The mind is a difficult thing to understand let alone heal."
Sarah nodded. She could feel her eyes tearing up a little, but refused to let them fall and blinked rapidly to disperse them. "Yes. I understand," she confirmed. "We'll take care of him."
"Okay. Should you need me, just send me a message. I'm not averse to traveling Aboveground if needed."
"Thank you, Healer Watts," Jareth nodded.
The Healer smiled at them both before turning and heading back to his office.
Jareth walked over to Sarah and placed a hand on her shoulder. "He's lucky to have you as a sister," he said quietly. "To have someone who cares for him so much."
Sarah only nodded, not entirely convinced of that herself, but not arguing at the moment. Jareth frowned and looked down at her face. "I can feel what you're feeling, Cariad," he murmured. Just then, Inara came back into the Healers wing. Both of them looked up at her as she hurried towards them. He squeezed her shoulder again and murmured, "We'll talk about this later."
"Are we ready?" Inara asked.
"Yes, I believe so," Jareth nodded. "We're going to have to do this a little differently than normal. I'm going to create the portal since I know where we're going, and then Sarah, I want you to cast a feather light spell on Toby. Then you and Inara will carry Toby through while I hold it open. Is that clear?"
"Yes," Inara nodded.
Sarah nodded as well and stood. She and Jareth had talked about the featherlight spell before, but she'd only practiced on small items like rocks before. Drawing in a breath, she visualized her magic coursing through her then gathering in her hands. She placed them both on Toby's shoulders and muttered, "Bí cosúil le cleite." She then positioned herself at Toby's head, ready to lift his torso. Inara, taking the hint, went to his feet. "Here we go," Jareth sucked in a deep breath, then began to gather his power. Once he was ready, he breathed out and said, "Oscailte domsa, geata." A portal opened right there in the middle of the healing ward and Sarah and Inara quickly worked together to lift a much lighter Toby and bring him through.
On the other side, was a richly decorated bedroom with an elm fourposter bed. The two women managed to get Toby onto the bed just as Jareth walked through the portal and closed it. He then turned to the sleeping teenager and waved a hand again. This time his magic caused the blankets underneath Toby to disappear and suddenly reappear on top of him. "There," he stated. "He will rest peacefully in here."
Sarah straightened and looked around the room they were in. A tall window looked out over an old, but bustling city. The room itself was of moderate size and was decorated in elm wood furniture and blue and cream colors. A fresh vase of white and purple flowers sat on the dresser near the door. "Where is here?" Sarah asked.
Jareth smiled. "My dear Sarah, Princess Inara, may I welcome you to my townhome in New Town, Edinburgh, Scotland?"
"Edinburgh?" Sarah's eyes widened. She moved to the window to look out it. The New Town area was exactly what she pictured when she thought of Edinburgh and she smiled. "It's wonderful," she said turning back to him.
"Wait till you see the rest of the house," Jareth grinned. "Come, I'll show you."
With that, Sarah and Inara checked on Toby one last time before following the Goblin King out to see the rest of the beautiful Georgian townhome in the heart of Edinburgh.
