Chapter 50

Jayden was sat on the patio; his arm and side were still bothering him and he hadn't been able to sleep. And while he could use his left hand in a duel, sketching was not something he was able to do with both hands.
"Your injuries still bothering you?" asks Evie as she sits down next to him.
"Yeah" he nods before looking at her in concern, "are they still bothering you?" he asks.
Evie shakes her head, "no, I'm fine, really. But it's usually injuries that push you not to sleep" replies Evie.
"Worth them though" smiles Jayden.
"Absolutely" agrees Evie.
"You know I couldn't have done it without you" notes Jayden looking at her.
"Don't overstate my involvement, you were the one doing the fighting" reminds Evie.
Jayden wraps his uninjured arm around her and kisses the top of her head, "you were the one who told me to fight smart, and you were the one who sent me the strength I needed to push through. You were right there with me" smiles Jayden.
"But it is done, Deker is gone, once and for all. And with him, our secret is safe again" adds Evie.
"Mhm, safe, sound and I don't have to hear the word lover ever again" snorts Jayden.
"Was it just the word, or how he used it?" asks Evie looking at him with a chuckle.
"Bit of both, I think I'll stick with girlfriend if that's okay with you" admits Jayden.
"Girlfriend is very okay with me" smiles Evie leaning up and kissing him softly, "and we can officially shelve the word lover from our vocabulary" she adds.
"Thank you" nods Jayden.
They sit in silence until Jayden feels Evie shiver next to him.
"Come on, I don't want a popsicle for a girlfriend" chuckles Jayden.
They walk back inside and Evie helps Jayden settle comfortable with his arm and he pulls the sling off, and Evie sets a pillow underneath so he doesn't roll on it.
"You're enjoying not being the one in pain aren't you" chuckles Jayden.
Evie smiles and pecks him on the lips, "I am" she nods.
"I figured" smiles Jayden.
Evie slides in next to him and turns the light off.
"Kevin did a good job today" notes Evie.
"Worried I've got a new second?" teases Jayden.
"Should I be?" retorts Evie.
"Never, Kevin's good, but if it had been any other situation I'd have left you in charge, you know that" soothes Jayden. "But I knew you'd get bleed through from me, I'm just sorry you got hurt too" he adds.
"I told you to do whatever you needed too. To take whatever you needed to take, and I meant it. Besides I'm fine now" assures Evie.
"I know, but still I hated having to take that hit knowing you'd feel it too" repeats Jayden.
"Please, I've had worse, we both have" retorts Evie, "and I'm tougher than that" she adds.
"Yes, yes you are. You're one of the strongest people I know" smiles Jayden.
"I know I'm pretty badass" agrees Evie.
Jayden just laughs, "yes, yes you are" he nods.
"And it was worth every bump and bruise to know we are here, you are safe and Deker is finally gone" adds Evie.
"Yeah, that is definitely a good outcome" confirms Jayden. "But you were right" he adds.
"About what?" asks Evie.
"Like I said, part of me wanted to fight Deker, to prove that I was the worthy opponent, that I was the best. I know it was an ego thing" answers Jayden.
Evie shifts so she was looking at him, even in the dim light she could make out his features, "I know it was, I've always known that was a factor. But for the record, you are the red ranger, you're our leader, and we all believe and trust in you" comforts Evie, "regardless of what your mind may sometimes whisper to you" she adds brushing his hair back from his face.
Jayden looks at her, "it does" he admits.
"I know it does, but you are the red ranger, you're father knew that he day he entrusted the lion zord to you. And I love you regardless, and so do the others. We would all follow you into hell itself if you asked us too. And that is all you, never forget that Jayden" soothes Evie.
"Thank you" says Jayden cupping her cheek.
"You've done it enough for me over the years, I am more than happy to do it for you now. And if your ego does ever need a quick return to reality, I'm sure I can manage that with a swift kick to the head" chuckles Evie.
"I don't doubt it for a second" smiles Jayden.
Evie nods and plants a soft kiss on his lips before she curls up next to him, Jayden's hand running up and down her arm in a featherlight caress.
"I love you" he murmurs.
Evie smiles in the dark, "love you too" she replies before shutting her eyes, and feeling secure in the knowledge Deker was no longer a threat.
Jayden felt more relaxed as well, and maybe a little smug too. He had beaten Deker, and while he knew Evie's contribution had helped, it felt good to know as she said, he had been the driving force that had defeated him.
Shutting his eyes he smiles and let's sleep pull him under, for now at least. All was well.
