CHAPTER 15

Ruby was on her way to the airport in a local bigger village in order to get into the Vale city for her next mission. Her mission this time was another investigation to decide the fate of a person named Andrei Naram. The village itself was surrounded by the walls with a turret every one hundred meters.

There were two guards, most likely local huntsmen at the gates that were checking the travelers IDs. Ruby reached into her pocket and removed a steel reinforced plastic card with fake information under 'Ruby Dusk'. It was made in one of the White fang facilities under an experienced government worker, who was loyal to his kind.

"Please show us your IDs kid" one of the guards asked her as she approached the gate. Ruby reached out her hand with the document to the huntsmen who asked her.

"Reason of coming here and why are you alone? You are kind of too short and young to be a huntress, or in training one".

Ruby got a little upset for being called short and pouted while saying "I am not short, I drink milk".

"Hehehe" both of the guards chuckled at her.

"I am going to the airport to get a plane to Vale to join my remaining relatives and I am strong enough to kill or run from grimm".

"Kid, never underestimate the creatures of grimm. It killed a lot of experienced huntsmen, some of them being my friends. Now come inside, because the plane to Vale is leaving in one hour" the guard answered, while giving back her ID and noting her entry on a tablet.

Ruby crossed the gate and went straight to the airport, bought the ticket and waited. Half an hour later it arrived and she boarded it.

The craft was itself an older model for transporting about fifty people with two small turrets embedded at the sides. About three quarters of it was filled with people and about ten of huntsmen. She was able to get a seat by the window on the left side of the plane, while leaving her weapons inside the bag at the cargo hold due to the rules.

Twenty minutes later the plane took off and flew directly to the Vale. Ruby watched how they passed the sea and the turret shooting from time to time, until it jammed and nevermore was getting closer, causing panic among the civilians and causing huntsmen to get their weapons, which they were allowed to have on board, due to their licenses.

Nevermore landed on the wing with its spoons ripping holes it's head penetrating the hull and catching a scared civilian in its mouth. The blood flowed out of its mouth, leaving only the legs and part of the hand falling off of the sides of its jaw to the ground. The huntsmen shot it down, while one of the plane engines failed, due to the damage craft received to the wing and weight of the monster causing the pilot to lose control.

The plane went rotating left to the ground, with no chances of rescue. After a moment they hit the ground and Ruby lost consciousness.

Ruby came back to her senses and she was lying on the ground with bandages on her chest and looked around and saw some wounded people in various states. There was also one of the two huntsmen teams from the plane taking care of the wounded and protecting camp. She tried to get up, but a woman stopped her by placing hand on her arm and saying "you need to lie down and not aggravate your wounds".

It was a huntress from the pair that was also on the plain and her partner was sitting nearby with a back to her watching the forest.

Ruby felt her aura coming back and healing her wounds a little, but decided to wait for them to close before moving. She felt a wind movement on her ears and panicked a little that her heritage was out in the open and tried to reach for her hood to cover them, but was stopped again by the huntress.

"I told you not to move" she hissed at her.

"I have an aura, so I will be fine in a while, but I need to cover my ears," she replied with a little panic in her voice.

"There is no need to cover these cute ears kid, what's your name?"

Ruby hesitated a little, before coming down and answering "It's Ruby".

"We will talk later Ruby, I need to check the other wounded, but you should be fine in an hour or two, so take a nap if you can, but don't move".

Ruby continued lying and after long minutes she fell asleep again.

She felt a hand on her arm shaking her lightly, causing her to wake up. It was dusk, her wounds closed themselves and her aura was full.

She saw an armed man waking her up, who asked "do you have any weapon, experience at being on watch and better night vision?"

Ruby nodded and said "my weapons are inside my bag and I am used to traveling alone, my faunus traits allows me a better vision in the dark and better hearing".

"Good, but you will need to find yours bag, if its still here, we have prioritized people and first aid kits, you will be on night shift with James, Melanie and Rick. The transmitter onboard was destroyed during the attack, but we are trying to fix it".

"I can look into it…" she was interrupted by the huntsman saying "sorry kid, but I don't think you will be able to do anything…" he stopped seeing Ruby detaching her arm and saying "I made it myself along with my weapons".

"Fine you win. The transmitter is inside the cockpit with wires going to the antenna at the tail. Nevermore destroyed the cable, but we fixed it already, but what was left of the cockpit is a mess, but do it during the day. Now I am going to sleep".

Ruby stood up and went into the plane cargo hold remains and after a while she found her bag destroyed partially, with her broken mask sticking out of the hole, which she had hidden much deeper into her bag and took out her weapons and ammunition. Inspecting them, she hasn't found any damages.

Taking them out and filling her pockets with magazines, she stepped out of the plane and sat on top of it watching the camp, with her upgraded rifle, which now had a spearhead at the end and a sickle blade under barrel for stabilization during shooting and cutting through monsters.

She refrained from shooting grimm, unless it would be a necessity, due to the amount of people sleeping under her and prepared her gentle rose to fight. Ruby saw the huntress that was taking care of her approaching, climbing up and sitting next to her keeping Ruby back safer as she watched the other side.

"Name Melanie Vinci and it looks like we can finally talk. I know you are with the White fang" Melanie introduced herself while dropping the bomb on Ruby.

"Don't act surprised, young faunus girl with aura, traveling alone with a metal arm she made herself, plus weapons and white fang mask sticking out of the damaged bag in the cargo hold. Adding them together you will get a result. Calm down I won't say anything to anybody, but I want to know your story, before judging, since you know the fang became a terrorist organisation".

Ruby hesitated a little, before giving up and telling "I used to have a loving family, most of them are still alive, but it has been years since we saw each other and they are all humans. My mother was faunus, but she was murdered and I was taken... and I was sold to Atlas, where I spent years as a slave. In the mine accident I lost my right arm, which was blessings in disguise, due to the chip in my elbow being destroyed. A friend was able to get me out of there, by faking my death and smuggling a small fire dust crystal out of mine and giving me it. Couple of days later, while escaping and evading grimm I managed to find a city and a local White fang cell. They rescued the rest of the faunus and since then I and a lot of us decided to stay and fight for our cause and freedom… Year later I killed the owner of the mine, the person responsible for a lot of deaths, just to earn more lien on dust. Shoot him from the roof with this rifle here" she added the last part as a warning, but the woman just reached out and hugged her, much to the Ruby surprise.

"Well at least you aren't the kind that all humans are evil and deserve the death type of faunus. These types of radicals are the worst" she chuckled lightly to lighten up the atmosphere.

"Thank you" Ruby said silently.

"For what?"

"For taking care of me when I was wounded and liste…" Ruby stopped talking as she spotted a beowulf sneaking to the edge of the camp by the forest and used her semblance to get next to it and cut off his head with a swing of her sabre. She then checked the perimeter for more grimm and found them, as they almost always were moving in packs. She then proceeded to kill them one by one by striking lethal wounds and evading their swings. She had to use her semblance one more time to evade one grimm that tried to sneak upon her.

After a while she stood in the middle of dispersing grimm and locked eyes with Melanie, who had just arrived from the crashed plane.

"Well that was fast. Damn you were born huntress, from what I can see. There I was thinking that you were going to shoot them, while waking up the whole camp" She said impressed at Ruby's skill.

"My mother was one of the best huntresses around from what I heard, working a lot for the beacon headmaster, but as you can see I am not one and most likely will never be an official one…"

"Beacon headmaster Ozpin!? Damn she must have been really talented, looks like the world lost one of its lights, but seeing your skill and amount of hard work I think you should continue her legacy. Save those that are in need, kill monsters".

"I am doing that, but unlike my mom I can see that not every person that requires saving is worth it and that some people are just monsters like grimm. I fight for those that can't. I fight for those families, so they won't experience the same things as I. I fight for the orphans that lost their families due to shopkeepers refusing to sell dust to their parents, because they were faunus. I fight for others' better future, as mine is already bloodstained" Ruby said with conviction.

"What's about laws? They exist for a reason to punish people like them justly".

"They don't care about it, due to the hatred for faunus and corruption allowing them to pay or threaten their way in a court. Shortly they are above the law and law officers don't care about us".

"Let's go back to the camp, the night is still long, before ending and we have a duty to do here, until a rescue team finds us. Fucking underqualified maintenance workers did not bother to check the turrets for a long time on this craft" she mumbled the last part with visible anger.

They made it back to their place in a camp and continued to watch and sometimes battle the grimm, until morning came and all three of them were tired.

"Well I got to check the transmitter" Ruby said while yawning at the end to Melanie.

"Gonna check the wounded and sleep finally" she responded, less tired and more used to sleepless nights.

The transmitter inside the cockpit was almost completely destroyed with two people trying to fix it, but their progress was small, due to the amount of damage.

"Hey I am Ruby and was allowed to help you with this transmitter"

After a short talk and Ruby showing her arm and build-in tools, she managed to convince them to let her help with it. Three hours later they managed to build a new one using parts from various devices in the cockpit, with a microphone and speaker from the scroll that belonged to one of the dead civilians.

"Let's test it and call help" the older man named Dave give signal to younger helper Steve, as he connected the battery to the transmitter and it started making noise.

"This is the flight from village of Citra to Vale, requesting medical help and evacuation. many wounded and dead. We are unable to point our localisation".

"Thi… ... Vale rescue and de...se force. We have b...n looking for you. We are coming your way. Keep the transmitter active. ETA two hours".

Ruby looked at them and smiled. They too were happy and younger one yelled "rescue at last!" causing people at camp to look at him.

"In two hours Vale ships will arrive here and rescue us. Until then we need to stay vigilant".

Ruby sat down on the ground next to the plane with her weapons on her body and took a nap.
