CHAPTER 15

Sitting on the crashed plane, a young girl in red waited and reminisced about her past family. The fake tail her mom always found a way to attach to her pants, her sister Yang's adventurous personality and realized something was wrong. Her sister was fully human, bigger than her, liked to keep her blond hair long, different eye colour than Ruby and mom, different surnames.

Ruby looked into her reflected face on the weapon blade and compared it with difficulty, due to memories being buried for the last six years, to her dad Taiyang Xiao Long. She had a few semblances, but most of her features were from her mother, unlike Yang Xiao Long, where she had a different face shape and lilac eyes.

It was then it hit her hard. She and her sister were most likely half siblings. She and Yang were almost completely different, except for some traits they shared with dad and her father had lost more people. Ruby was afraid. Afraid of coming back, afraid of the years the six years and some months that passed away from family, afraid of being not recognised, afraid that she would not be wanted anymore, afraid of facing them, afraid of them not accepting what she has become in meantime, afraid of her past in mine, afraid of truth and lastly afraid of herself. She had already killed other people, what if she hurts them, or causes them harm. What if authorities would go after them, because of her, or worse people who would want to get revenge on her.

'Most likely they already moved past me and think that I am dead. I need to move on too, it will be better for all of us that way. I am sorry' Ruby with her final thought ended her thinking and saw that she was taking fast breaths all the time and managed to calm down herself. Looking at her reflection last time, before compacting her weapon to her back, she saw tears leaking out of her eyes and wiped them cleanly, hoping no one saw it.

A few moments later she heard an engine running in the sky and used her semblances to climb atop of the highest tree in the nearby area. There she spotted four armed military crafts, with one of them having a medical marking. They were slow moving, most likely to not miss the crash site. Ruby went down the tree and informed the huntsman on duty about the situation and went to prepare for evacuation.

Moments later an emergency flare was shot, by one of the huntsmen, as she calmly reached her bag and packed her stuff. Meanwhile the engines were getting closer and as Ruby took her bag onto her left arm, while keeping Scarlet Rose on her right hand.

Minute later the crafts reached their position and two of them lowered their altitudes in order to land, while also opening the ramps at the back with medical personnel, four huntsmen teams with one in training, most likely from lead by overweight light gray haired huntsman with moustache and axe-blunderbuss mix weapon.

The huntsmen jumped down the craft, before touchdown, split into six two people groups and one five people. Four pairs went into the edges of the camp, relieving the tired huntsmen and securing camp, meanwhile rest went immediately to help people with first aid kits. The grey haired man approached Melanie and started talking with her.

When the two crafts finally touched down, twelve professional paramedics left the crafts in hurry with full field medical stuff and started helping the most wounded people, which were pointed out by the assisting huntsmen.

"Are you ok, miss?"

"Yes. I have already healed, due to my aura mister, just tired" Ruby answered startled by a sudden voice next to her, as she lost her guard, by admiring the efficiency and professionalism in front of her.

"Well I heard by that young miss here that you were a big help around and talented, hard working warrior. Do you aspire to be a huntress?"

"I am not talented and I cannot become a huntress anymore mister…" Ruby averted her eyes while saying that.

"Ohohoho. Looks like I forgot to introduce myself. I am Professor Peter Port of the Beacon Academy in Vale and I am offering you a spot there with a full stipend when you apply to us, after graduating your current school. Just need your name" Peter offered her.

"My name is Ruby… Ruby Rose'' she answered last part silently before adding "I am not going to any school, because I am home tutored and I and my adoptive family don't wish for me to die like my biological did, because they were huntsmen" Ruby lied at the end so that she would not say more, as she already said her true name.

"Oh I see. My condolences young Rose, but if you were to ever change your mind, then doors to Beacon are always open to you" Port said with sadness after hearing her story.

"Well it is time to board 'The Majesty' as the crew named her and I can say that 'I the professor Peter Port am proud of you, young Ruby Rose'" he said and turned to the craft, where the last wounded and body bags were loaded.

Ruby took the last look at the almost empty camp, made sure she had everything, boarded the airplane and sat on the edge seat. Three minutes later the craft started hovering in the air and flew towards Vale.

Tiredness again catching up to her caused her to take another nap, this time inside the craft.

Ruby woke up feeling being shaken up gently by the hand on her arm. Looking up she saw professor Port looking at her and saying "we have landed on Beacon airport about two hours ago. It's time for your check up in the hospital. After that we will escort you to your residence, or relatives. You should also call them now, because they are most likely worrying sick".

"I was planning on staying for two weeks inside the hotel in the residential district before moving back home. Getting to know places, culture, people. It is my tutor's recommendation to travel to different places in order to get some practical knowledge" Ruby practically bullshitted her way, while standing up with all her things on her and following the professor.

They talked some more about Vale with professor Port recommending various places, such as hotels, restaurants, museums, galleries. After a while they reached the hospital part of Beacon and went inside.

"Hello. You must be the last patient that was sleeping. We will make it fast, so you can go back to sleep, kid, but for now please come inside, close the door and take off the top clothes" said a woman with a fox tail inside the room.

Ruby followed the initial instructions and took off her top clothes, while also showing her scars she had received in the past, where most of them were hidden by her arm connector to the rest of her body. The view caused the woman to frown and in anger as she asked "who did this to you?" while looking at Rose's arm.

"Accident in Atlas, I don't want to talk about it" Ruby answered while trying to evade the face of her fellow faunus.

"This is not Atlas technology, as the connector is completely different from the ones they use and other countries are backwards in terms of artificial limbs development, so they are importing them from Mantle. Yours is not imported and most likely a black market good, which is lucky, is still working and you claimed an accident, so you should have an atlesian made arm here with reimbursement. Now sit down young lady and breathe in and out, while I am checking on you" woman said with anger in her voice.

Ruby did as she was told, without saying anything and felt a doctor using various tools to check upon her body and muttering "past malnutrition... muscles developed more in the upper part of the body showing a lot of work done by heavy tools... small irregularity within lungs…" after a moment she asked "how old are you?"

Ruby hesitated for a moment, before answering "thirteen and half" causing the woman to frown and mutter again "stunted growth".

"Now take off the skirt and boots and let me inspect your legs and feets".

She did that and the woman started touching and inspecting them while muttering "no scars or wounds, no signs of sexual, or any other type of abuse, feet okay with no signs of flat foot development, all good" looking up she said "well at least that part of your body is better".

"Now remove that arm and use this gel to cover the connector, also use a switch off button if there is one. Make sure it is properly covered, by a thick layer of gel before we radiograph you on this bed, otherwise it might cause you and me a lot of pain" she said with a grim expression.

Ruby followed the instructions, before lying down on the bed and letting the machine operated by the doctor to scan her, while trying not to move, due to the tickling sensation from the arm connector mounted on her stump. After a couple of agonizing minutes the machine was turned off and she was able to sit. Rose tried to reach and scratch around her stump, but a fast slap onto her hand stopped it with words "it won't help, but it will stop soon".

The fox woman then went to her holographic computer on the desk and opened the scan. Looking at it she said "No signs of injuries, or broken bones, before aura activation and no wrongly healed wounds making your bone structure healthy, but yours airways looks damaged, by high, or constant amount of dust, both from crystals and stone. You will need to use an inhaler from now on to let them recover. Next, muscles are in peak condition for your age, nerves are fine, no signs of dying, or cancerous cells, all other organs are fine, most likely due to aura being unlocked at a young age. Now about that connector… It is good quality, so you lucked out, but you should not try to use artificial limbs without certifications, because they can have major or minor errors, or be low quality, causing them to break while in use. It can cause fire, electrical burn wounds, damage your nerves, open your stump wound, or in the worst situation even stop your heart, damage or fry your brain. This is one of the major factors that makes replacement limbs expensive and limited. Some of them are even missing the automatic kill switch, which is against the law too".

"I made the connector and the arm myself, with the help of a professor, who is tutoring me and I trust his teachings".

"Now sit there and I will prepare the first inhalation treatment for you, put the mask on your mouth and start breathing deeply for one minute after I gave you a signal" fox faunus pointed to one of the seats with a built-in machine that had breathing masks attached via flexible pipe.

Ruby sat down and wore the mask, while the doctor shuffled the drawers mounted to the side of the wall and took out a couple of fluid medicines, which she carefully mixed with varying doses of each onto the empty vial. Then she mounted the vial inside the machine, turned on the machine and said "start breathing deeply", before turning back to her desk and typing something on her holographic computer.

One minute later, the fox faunus finished typing and asked for a scroll, which Ruby gave her, so she could imprint data on it, to be read in a pharmacy for Rose to buy medical supplies.

"You are lucky to be in Beacon hospital, otherwise you would get quite a check to pay. My salary and supplies are sponsored by the academy, so I don't have to worry about anything and this is one of the safest places on Remnant. Now you can take off the mask, pick up the scroll and go to sleep, room three hundred twelve on the East wing. You will be neighbouring fourth year students. Above you are the first years, but they should not cause you problems. Meet me there at ten in the morning to get a second inhalation" the Fox woman explained while waving her hand towards the door.

Ruby took off the mask, stood up and said "Thank you and goodbye" with a small head nod, before taking her scroll and leaving the room.

Going through long corridors, she thought about the size of the place and amount of students walking around, until she spotted a recognizable headmaster appearing at the edge of her vision, as Ruby was about to turn into one of the split offs. As she left the visual of the headmaster Ozpin, by turning around the corner, Rose heard a cup breaking and picked up a shocked mutter that sounded "Summer" with her ears.

In full panic Ruby used her semblance to get out of the building by the closest open window in the corridor and then continued, until she reached the closest roof inside the city, where Rose sat down and panted heavily.

"That was close. I need to leave the city, or stay low on. Both options are dangerous, but I think I will stay for a moment, before leaving" Ruby muttered watching the sky and resting.

AN: The next chapter will have a small surprise, but no spoilers. We are still about one and half years behind the cannon, which I am trashing. Also wanted to do small fixes to early chapters, nothing new, but looks like there are some problems and formating (putting text in the middle, adding line breaks) is partially broken. Gonna fix prologue, chapter 1 and 2, another time.
