Author has written 3 stories for Radiata Stories, and Naruto. Its time for another Bio Update! Updated: 11/8/13 Something I've been wondering about in my foray into Time-travel fiction is things that would make sense (to me at least), and things that kind of tick me off are often the most overlooked. So, I present my version of the "The Rules of Time-Travel!" 1. If you're going into a specific time or event, acknowledge all past events as truth. What does it mean?: Good golly, this is the one cardinal rule I look to hope it never breaks in the fiction. It was hammered into me when I found several fics go back in time only to give a passing mention that something major had been changed without them even mentioning it before. Case in point: Naruto goes back in time to say just after Chunin exams and barely notes that the Third Hokage didn't die. I mean, if you're going back in time, whatever happened before your entry point must be considered unaltered, right? 2. Changing a character's origin. What does it mean?: Suppose you go back in time to your parent's era and you see how they met and would eventually make you. You unknowingly push your mother to the guy Before your dad, or you push your dad way too soon to be with your mom and as a result, they don't get together. You cease to exist right? Well in some fics, Naruto or Sasuke change their parental figures to an extreme so that they make them eventually but with different skills. What gets me in this rule, is that if Kushina marries into the Uchiha clan, Naruto somehow comes out Blond and has access to Rasengan from the get go! When you change the origin, be consistent! 3. Mature people going back in time don't belittle their mentally younger versions of their dead/evil teammates. What does this mean?: Lately, the trend is that if a person goes back in time, they are armed with the knowledge of the future and they go back in time to make things better. What gets me is that they go through time to their younger selves and instantly single out the author's hated or disliked character and bash them out the wazoo. I mean, if you went back in time, you wouldn't belittle a younger version of your ex or best friend because they dumped or became your enemy in the future? Not only does it destroy the purpose of going back which is to improve the world, but makes the character and the author by proxy, look like an ass. Sadly, that rule gets overlooked all too often... 4. Changing things on a grand scale and being shocked that the event in your future plays out way differently than they remember! What does this mean?: Do I really have to mention that if you play with time, your results may vary? Its a plot device used by authors (most particularly the HP fandom) that express that Naruto/Harry are absolutely gobsmacked that the Chunin/Goblet of Fire is not the same as they remember it! Well duh... Finally, No. 5! 5. Your knowledge is useless when you came in! What does this mean?: You being there already throws the wrench into so many plans, that your adversaries and colleagues will have to change and adapt to fit the new situation, whether they are aware of the character's entry or not. This kind of ties into rule 4, but disrupting the space-time continuum unless it shaped your present (as in Harry seeing himself cast the patronus), will guarantee that the world's knowledge except for the horrible outcome if you fail is absolutely trashed and should not be heeded as an example. I mean, if you came from a dark future, your events that lead up to it are changed when you change something insignificant such as befriending someone earlier than intended or manipulating an event that doesn't fit into the canon. Most prominently changed event is that Harry befriends Hermione earlier and somehow she goes crying off when Ron badmouths her in Charms class. If she already has a friend in Harry, what was the point of the troll scene? I've been looking over some of my other stories and seeing the one that inspired Devil Summoner Naruto stuck in limbo for a long time. I've read over the thing and from someone who had read a good book a long time ago only to find it cheap and tacky today, I've got to say its time for another rehash. Now don't fret! This new edition of Rockman Naruto will feature: A New Drive for the story. Like DSN, I will focus much of the effort into writing prologues instead of time skips. While that can be used to an expert degree, I found that too many timeskips, can damage a story. Naturally, you may reference DSN for its time skips, but those are at the beginning of the chapter and don't take as long, mostly two months, tops. A whole new look. I had something going there with Orange, then changed it to blue for story sake. However, the new version will look...Naruto-loreish. If that's a word...maybe. Character growth. Just jumping from canon event to canon event is stale and boring. I'll do what I did with DSN, all new adventures and companions that won't stay in the background! Powers: Each one will be inspired by the boss itself. In addition to the boss' classic powers, new variants will add both a boon and a detriment to our favored hero. Scrapping an old idea: Lets face it, you saw it coming from a mile away that Naruto was more synthetic than human. It was good on paper...not so much in execution. Now for the rest of my arsenal: DSN: On track and rolling out like no tomorrow, hope you enjoy the latest chapter! Harry: I know I said that I would delete it, but its so sentimental. I'd like to copy it and store it in a document for me to screw around with it, but FFN did put a stop to that. Not that I'm complaining, but when you lose your place in a story and want to see it for yourself, I'd hoped that they would allow original authors to copy...oh well. Radiata Stories: It was my first serious fic, and I put a lot of effort into it. Despite the low amount of info on this game, I'd taken to reference other games that I wanted the fic to be. To be honest, it was a mix of Radiata and C&C. Now that I'm older, more open to suspended beliefs like how C&C operates (I did write this story with little to no information available with C&C...thanks to C&C Wikia EVA for that info!), I'm going to revitalize it with a complete overhaul. Say...remember when the whole stink-up for mature content was overblown? Never did get off the ground, did it? Question: Should I move the cross over fics to their respective fandoms? I ask because someday, someone with a hard-on for the site rules will probably report the story for not being in its right place, and it will all go to shot. I'm hesitant because a lot of the fanbase runs on the Naruto portion and not the Devil Summoner/Persona fanbase. If I move it to the fanbase, it might be forgotten...and thats no bueno. Not that there is anything wrong with crossover fandoms, I've seen a lot of great ones, but for something this obscure? I don't know. Anyways, thats it for me from here! Terra Ace! PS: I really should find an avatar photo... |
