Beneath his fingers, he could feel the love of his life growing colder. For hours he had sat beside the hospital bed, his hand clutching Draco's tightly, as if he would disappear into a cloud of smoke if he dared to let go. Tears trickled down his cheeks, and his glasses began to mist as Harry struggled to catch his breath, to understand how everything had gone so strong so fast. A routine surgery gone wrong they had told him, but there was nothing routine about losing the person you loved the most, without even knowing it was a possibility.

Harry had smiled and waved Draco off as they wheeled him into the operating theatre hours earlier. He'd settled himself down with a book Draco had been begging him to give a chance, a steaming cup of tea beside him, and thought of what he would make for dinner the next day when he could finally bring his husband home. Harry had no way of knowing that as he sat and debated between fish or chicken, doctors were trying to save his husband's life just a few floors above.

Sobs reverberated through his chest as he rested his forehead on their joined hands, gently placing a kiss to the back of Draco's hand, praying that he would squeeze back, but knowing that it was impossible. Harry felt lost without him. He didn't know how he was supposed to carry on living, when the one who made him feel the most alive was dead and no longer by his side.

"I love you," Harry cried. "I love you so much it hurts."

Harry stood, resting Draco's hand back onto the bed and gazed down at the man he had dedicated his life to. Leaning down he placed one final kiss upon his husband's forehead, tears continuing to fall as he gasped and cried out. Loss and heartbreak rolled through him, pain like he had never experienced before as he spoke his final murmured goodbyes to the man that had shaped his very being.

"I don't know why you had to leave me, but I'll miss you every single day. I'm never going to stop loving you Draco."
