Chapter 2

It took them almost six hours to get from Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah, to Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest in Colorado, stopping along the way to resupply themselves with food and other necessities.

Their campsite was made up about a mile from the hydra base, Lexi makes sure that everything is concealed from outside eyes, before slowly and quietly moving closer to the base.

Lexi and Charlie spent the next day and a half, casing the place, making sure that they had as much information as they could get. Utilizing the laptop that she had lifted off of the scientist at the previous base, Lexi hacked into the base's main frame, while downloading as much of the digital files as she could, with the limited amount of space she had on the hard drive that she took.

Taking that night to rest up and prepare, they woke up the next morning well rested for the coming night.

!

They waited until midnight, for the guard shift to change, before sneaking into the subterranean base. Blending in with the tired agents, who are in search of food and their beds, they slipped into the base leaving the agents unaware of their presence.

As they pickpocketed agents on the way past the tired hydra scum, they headed to the elevator to take them to a lower level.

Lexi pressed the bottom that would take them to level 4, where the armory was located.

After stopping at the armory, grabbing more supplies, and then down to the lowest level. They planted the explosives as they went, no problem. It's getting out, where things become problematic.

After planting the last bomb, Lexi and Charlie made their way to the elevator.

They were two levels away from the surface when the elevator stopped, and the doors opened to reveal an agent.

Panicking, Lexi searched for a way out. Finding none, she ducked her head down and stood off to the side, as she tried to act natural. Charlie placed himself between Lexi and the agent.

!

Agent Mills had been having a great week. He got a promotion with an office and everything! His girlfriend of five years said yes when he popped the question, and he bought a house for his family to live in. He was on cloud nine, and nothing could bring him down.

He had just clocked out, and was heading down the hallway, to take the elevator to his quarters.

Entering the elevator, he saw a woman and a dog standing off to the side.

At first he didn't notice anything amiss. But as the doors closed, he saw out of the corner of his eye that the dog wasn't wearing a standard issue Hydra K-9 vest. Infact, neither the dog nor the woman were wearing any kind of Hydra vest or identifying markers at all.

Discreetly reaching for his gun, he began to position himself to neutralize the obvious intruders.

The woman whispered something too softly for Agent Mills to hear, when the dog jumped and attacked him. Biting his inside thigh, the intruder reached over and grabbed the gun. As they fought for the gun, two shots rang out. Before, finally, the intruder wrestled the gun from him. The last thing he saw was his own pistol coming down on his head. Then his world black, and he knew no more.

!

The doors opened one level down from the surface, where the agent was heading. Reaching over to press the button that will close the doors, Lexi stopped. She frowned when she saw that one of the bullets had damaged the console. She saw that now there was no choice but to go the rest of the way on foot.

Checking outside of the elevator, and seeing that nobody was around. Lexi then reached down and hauled the agent behind her, as she dragged him out of the elevator. Pressing all of the buttons in the elevator, hoping that it would still go, to send it to another floor.

Lexi propped him up against the wall, as she then went to the nearest door and poked her head room was empty, so Lexi rushed back over to the agent and dragged him into the room.

Lexi tucked him into one of the far back corners and moved some chairs around to better hide him. Lexi then took a moment to actually take in her surroundings. They found themselves inside a lab of some kind.

In the middle of the room, was a chair with a very large machine seemingly built around it, with some kind of clamp that would be lowered onto the head.

Okay, scratch that.

Lexi and Charlie were in a torture chamber.

Lexi and Charlie didn't want to be in a torture chamber.

Charlie bumped his head against Lexi's left leg. Looking down, Charlie was booping his nose against Lexi's thigh, whining. When Lexi looked closer, she found a bullet hole in the outside thigh of her left leg. A clean shot, through and through.

As she cursed softly under her breath, Lexi pulled her backpack off. She reached inside, and pulled out a first aid kit. Lexi utilized the first aid skills that her mom taught her, and bandaged herself up as best as she could until they got back to camp. Where she could pull out the suture kit.

When everything was packed away again, Lexi climbed to her feet. She slinged the backpack onto her back, and slipped out of the room. Lexi and Charlie made their way over to the stairwell.

They moved as quickly and quietly as they could with Lexi's injury, they were back outside and made their way over to a vehicle to take in no time.

It wasn't until they were more than a hundred yards from the base, that Lexi pulled the detonator out of her jacket pocket, and pressed the button. Leaving explosions, screams, and a collapsed underground base behind them, Lexi and Charlie drove away, into the midnight horizon.

!

She bit back a curse, as Charlie whined. Lexi closed the bullet holes in the side of her leg.

When it was wrapped up, Lexi sighed, "I'm gonna be out of commission for a while." Lexi leaned back against the tree trunk, breathing heavily. "On the bright side, this gives us plenty of time to both get to the next base, and plan our next move."

Lexi reached over to her bag, and pulled out the map. She hummed as she scanned over it. The map was laid out flat on the ground, "What do you think? Which one do you think we should go to next?" She asked her furry companion.

Charlie seemed to contemplate the decision. Before using his nose to point to Nevada.

"Reno, Nevada, here we come."
