NicoleR85: thanks!
Jenna tapped her pencil against her sketch pad, utterly bored. Two months. Two months of being stuck inside the TARDIS while the Doctor played human at an all-boys school. Damn Family of Blood she mentally griped. If they didn't have such good senses, she'd be out there too making sure the Doctor was safe instead of relying on Martha. Not that she didn't think Martha would be capable of keeping an eye on him, it was just that the woman didn't have her gift of 'feelings' or visions, as rare as they seem to be nowadays. She can't even remember the last time that she had one it had been so long.
Jenna sighed, putting her sketch book and pencil aside. "I gotta get out of here", she muttered to herself. Even though it was a risk, she just had to get out for a breather. If she didn't then she was going to go stir crazy. The brunette went into the vast wardrobe and picked out a dress suitable for 1913. It was of a simple design, floor length and of a similar colour to her eyes. Jenna twisted her hair into a basic bun and tucked her locket under the dress. She didn't bother to change her shoes as the dress covered them. Jenna then left the TARDIS, ignoring the noises of protest from the ship.
She walked through the little village, smiling to herself at the freedom after being cooped up for so long. In another part of the village, the Doctor and Joan were strolling along, chatting.
"His name was Oliver. He died in the battle of Spy-On-Cope", Joan explained "We were childhood sweethearts…But you see, I was angry with the army for such a long time".
"You still are", the Doctor stated.
"I find myself as part of that school watching boys learn how to kill", Joan continued.
"Don't you think discipline is good for them?" the Doctor asked.
"Does it have to be such military discipline? I mean, if there's another war those boys won't find it so amusing", Joan told him.
"Well…Great Britain is at peace, long may it reign", the Doctor said.
"In your journal, in one of your stories, you wrote about next year. Nineteen fourteen. All those images of mud and wire. You told of a shadow. A shadow falling across the entire world", Joan reminded him.
"Well then, we can be thankful it's not true", the Doctor said cheerfully "And I'll admit mankind doesn't need warfare and bloodshed to prove itself. Everyday life can provide honour and valour, and…let's hope that from now on this, this country…can find its heroes in smaller places…" he trailed off when something caught his attention. A rope sling holding a piano aloft was starting to break despite the workman's attempts to try and hold it. At the same time, a young woman with a pram is coming around the corner, completely unaware of the danger above. "In the most… " the Doctor looked from the rope to the young boy who was playing with a cricket ball "ordinary…" the second strand of the rope is almost completely broken and the piano lurches violently "Of deeds!" he snatched the cricket ball from the boy and was about to throw it when another young woman in a purple dress pulled the other one out of the way, taking the pram with her. A second later, the piano landed on the ground, smashing into pieces.
"That was lucky", Joan remarked, eyeing the scene.
"Yeah…lucky", the Doctor agreed. There was something about the mother's saviour….something familiar "I'll be right back", he said.
"What?" Joan asked, surprised.
"I'll be right back", the Doctor repeated. Eyes trained on the brunette in the purple dress, he walked towards her and the young mother. As if she'd sensed him, the young woman looked up at him. The Doctor stalled, his heart beating faster at the sight of the woman he'd been dreaming about for months. She was real! Without warning the woman took off. The Doctor chased after her.
Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Jenna mentally berated herself as she ran. Why did she leave the TARDIS? Why? Of course something like this was going to happen. "Miss wait!" she heard the Doctor call but she just ignored him. Jenna darted out into a road at the same time an old fashioned vehicle approached.
Luckily a pair of arms grabbed her and pulled her out of the way. She and her saviour tumbled to the ground "Are you alright, miss?" the Doctor asked, checking her over.
"I'm fine", Jenna replied, trying to ignore how her heart sped up at the way he was looking at her, concern in those warm brown eyes "thank you for saving me".
"You're welcome", the Doctor said. He got up and helped her to her feet. "Why did you run back there?" he asked "when I approached you?"
"I thought you were someone else", Jenna quickly replied "but that's my mistake. Now if you'll excuse me, I have somewhere I need to be". She started to walk away when the Doctor lightly grabbed her hand.
"Wait", he said "you're the woman of my dreams".
Jenna was a little surprised by this. Yes, Martha had told her that the Doctor aka John Smith had been having dreams of his previous adventures and he had been talking quite a bit about her. But she didn't expect him to say that. "I'm sorry?" she asked, feigning confusion.
"What I mean is, I've been having dreams about you. Every night as a matter of fact. And I've been wanting to meet you for the longest time but of course I couldn't because you weren't real though now I can see that you are real…" the Doctor rambled. He shook his head, realising that that he'd been going off on a tangent "Sorry. What I'm trying to say is that I'd like to get to know you. The annual dance is happening at the Village Hall tonight and I would be honoured if you'd go with me".
Jenna knew that she should just say no. A stroll through the village was a big enough risk but the dance…that could bring unwanted chaos in to an otherwise peaceful place. On the other hand, she hadn't seen the Doctor in two months and she really did miss him. Besides she could now help Martha keep an eye on him, keep him out of danger. "I'd love to", she said.
The Doctor smiled "great", he said "did you still have somewhere to be or would it be too much of an imposition to ask you back to the school?"
"No, it wouldn't be an imposition at all", Jenna replied "in fact I would be delighted to go back with you". The Doctor's smile grew wider. He proffered an arm to her and she took it. Together they headed back to the school.
The Doctor had to steady his hand for the nth time as he sketched Jenna. It was as shaky as his heart was racing with the young woman he'd been dreaming about for months sitting across from him. It had been almost three hours since they met and he can still hardly believe it. "There. Done", he said finishing up the final touches to the drawing. Jenna moved over to where he sat and peered at the page.
"Oh my…" she breathed rather struck by the way he'd drawn her. She wasn't even sure he had drawn her. The person on the page seemed to be very beautiful, not at all like herself.
"Do you like it?" the Doctor asked.
"I…I think you've made me far too beautiful", Jenna admitted.
"That's how I see you Miss Kieran", the Doctor told her.
"Please John how many times have I told you may call me Jenna", Jenna reminded him.
"At least once more, Miss Kieran"
Jenna touched his hand "You may call me Jenna, John", she said, repeating her words from earlier.
"Ok, Jenna", the Doctor said. He reached up and stroked the side of her hair, his eyes flickering to her lips. He wondered what it would be like to kiss her. Yes, he or rather the man he'd dreamt of being…the Doctor…had kissed her in his dreams. But what would it be like to actually do the deed. He leant forward and softly pressed his lips against hers. "Miss Kieran…" the Doctor started as he pulled away.
"Jenna", the violet eyed girl gently reminded him and the disguised Time Lord let out a laugh.
"Jenna", he corrected "I uh…" he trailed off not really knowing the words to describe what he was feeling right now. Instead he opted to kiss Jenna again. Suddenly door is flung open and Martha entered, causing the pair to break apart.
"Martha, what have I told you about entering unannounced?" the Doctor all but scolded the woman. Martha quickly hurried out of the room, pulling the door closed. "Sorry about her", he said apologetically to Jenna.
"That's quite alright", Jenna assured him "I should make sure she's ok. I'm sure she's shocked by what just happened". Without waiting for a reply, she hopped up from the sofa and left the room. She didn't have to go very far as Martha was still lingering outside the room.
"What are you doing here?" the woman whispered. Jenna walked past her and gestured for Martha to follow.
"It wasn't planned, believe me", Jenna told her quietly "I was just taking a walk in the village where he happened to see me save a mother and her child from being crushed by a piano. I tried to get away but then he saved my life".
"And that leads to you two kissing?" Martha asked.
"That wasn't planned either. It just…happened", Jenna admitted "and its too late for me to go back to the TARDIS as I've accepted his offer to the dance tonight".
"And what if the Family show up?" Martha asked "should we open the watch?"
"No", Jenna replied.
"But the Doctor's message…"
"No Martha", Jenna repeated, more firmly this time "if the Family finds us, I'll deal with them. Let the Doctor stay John Smith for as long as possible".
"How are you going to deal with them?" Martha queried.
"I'll do a thing", Jenna answered.
Martha raised her eyebrows "a thing? Care to be more specific?"
"I'm afraid I can't. Most likely going to be making it up as I go", Jenna confessed. Martha chuckled at that.
"Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with the 'thing'", Martha said.
"Don't worry, I will", Jenna promised. She glanced back toward the Doctor's room "I better get back to him. See you tonight at the dance", she added. Martha nodded and watched as the brunette headed back to the Doctor.
Jenna turned this way and that, checking out her reflection in the mirror and nodded. Yep, she looked good. "You look nice", Naiyah remarked making the brunette turn around.
"Thanks", Jenna said.
"You'll need to be really careful tonight Jenna. The Family is here", Naiyah said in a warning tone.
"Don't worry, I will be", Jenna assured her "they're not getting anywhere near the Doctor".
"Its not him I'm worried about. It's you", Naiyah told her "why do you think you had to stay in the TARDIS this whole time?"
"The Family have very good senses. They'd 'sniff' out that I'm different…more like the Doctor", Jenna replied "but I'm human so irrespective of what they'd smell, there's no way I could give them what they want".
"Actually…they have ways. And what they could get from you is more powerful than the Doctor's essence", Naiyah said.
"Because of my link to you?" Jenna asked.
The Time Lady nodded "exactly", she confirmed.
"Well, whatever they think they can get from me, they're not going to get without a fight", Jenna said.
The Time Lady laughed "That I don't doubt", she said "but be careful all the same. The Family is still dangerous".
"Noted", Jenna said "and again, I will be careful" she adjusted the locket around her neck "right, I better get to the school before John decides to go look for me".
"Have fun but…"
"Be careful. I know", Jenna gave the Time Lady a smile before the left the TARDIS.
~Doctor's study~
The Doctor was rather taken aback by how beautiful Jenna looked. "You look…amazing", he breathed.
Jenna smiled at his compliment "thank you", she said and stepped inside the room "and you look very handsome".
The Doctor returned her smile "Thanks", he said.
"I'm just curious, can you dance?" the brunette asked. She knew that the Time Lord could dance but she wasn't sure about the human version.
The Doctor mused over her question "um…I'm not certain", he admitted "though I am certain about one thing".
"And what's that?" Jenna queried, though she had a good idea what that 'one thing' is.
The Doctor took her hands "you", he replied. He leant in to kiss her when Jenna's eyes widened as a 'feeling' came over her, the first one she'd had in two months. "Whats wrong?" he asked as she pulled her hands out of his.
"I gotta go", Jenna said. She turned to the door when it was flung open and a rather breathless Martha entered.
"They've found us", she panted.
"I'll be right back", Jenna said and ushered Martha out of the room "are you alright?" she asked quietly.
"Honestly? No, not really", Martha admitted "the Family has got one of the other maids, Jenny. I know you said we should let him stay John Smith for as long as possible…"
"We're not opening the watch yet", Jenna cut in.
"But the Family are here. We could do with the Doctor right about now", Martha protested.
"Martha do you trust me?" Jenna asked.
"Of course I do", Martha replied "with my life".
"Then trust me to deal with this", Jenna said "is the fob watch safe?"
"It was on the mantlepiece", Martha replied.
The violet eyed young woman shook her head "it's not there now", she told her.
"Damn it", Martha complained "what do we do now?"
"You try and find the watch and I'll take John to the dance", Jenna answered. Martha nodded and the Jenna went back into the Doctor's room.
"Is everything ok?" the Time Lord asked.
"Everything's fine", Jenna replied "Martha…has an active imagination but she won't be bothering us anymore tonight".
"That's good", the Doctor said "now where were we? Oh yes…" he moved over to her, cupping her face and kissed her again.
~Village hall~
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Chambers announced "Please take your partners for a waltz". The Doctor and Jenna took their places on the dance floor with the other couples.
"Seems like you can dance", the brunette teased.
"I surprise myself", the Doctor admitted. Jenna quickly turned them to prevent the Time Lord from bumping into a pair of guests. Once the dance was over, the Doctor led her over to a table. "I'll get us some refreshments", he said, giving her a quick kiss before heading over to the drinks table.
Jenna sat back in her chair, looking around the Village Hall. She stiffened when she saw a little girl staring at her rather creepily. One of the Family she thought. She wasn't going to go over there though, she needed to identify the other members.
"We need to talk", Joan stated, appearing at the table, looking none too happy.
"Uh…ok", Jenna said, gesturing to one of the seats.
"What are you intentions with Mr Smith?" the matron asked.
"I don't see how that's any of your business Miss…."
"Redfern. And its Joan", the woman told Jenna "Mr Smith is a good friend of mine. I don't want to see him get hurt by someone who looks an awful lot like the woman he drew in his journal".
"I would never hurt him", the brunette assured her "that's the last thing I would ever want to do".
"Good", Joan said, pleased.
"You said he drew me in his journal. You've read it?" Jenna questioned, surprised.
The matron nodded "Mr Smith leant it to me. It's a very interesting read. He's got an incredible imagination. You seem to be highly featured in it. He portrayed you as someone that 'the Doctor' was in love with". That had the little girl Jenna had spotted, sitting up straighter, her eyes trained on the pair with a smirk.
Martha stepped into the Village Hall and made a beeline for Jenna. "I'll leave you to it", Joan said to the brunette. She got up from the table and left but not before throwing Martha a somewhat mistrustful look.
"Now there's an interesting look", Jenna remarked "something happen between you two?"
"She…doesn't like me very much", Martha admitted, taking Joan's seat "anyway, I couldn't find the watch. I think someone took it".
Jenna sighed "Ok, we'll find it later" she leant in "one of the Family is here", she said quietly "little girl" she subtly nodded over to her. Martha glanced over at Daughter of Mine.
"She's creepy", she remarked "are you planning on doing a 'thing' yet so we can turn Mr Smith back into the Doctor?"
Jenna shushed her, glancing over at where the girl was. She was gone. Damn it! Now the Family knew about the Doctor becoming human. "Not yet", the brunette answered "I need to find out who the other members of the Family are".
"Martha? What are you doing here?" the Doctor asked, a cup in each hand.
"I just came over to say 'hi'", Martha answered "but I'll uh…leave you to it". She went to get up when Mr Clarke entered gun in hand, knocking over a hat stand as he went.
"There will be silence! All of you!" he demanded as the guests shriek and move away from him. Jenna slowly stood up as Baines and Jenny entered along with a few scarecrows.
"Mister Clarke, what's going on?" Chambers asked and was vaporised by Mr Clarke/ Father of Mine.
"We asked for silence!" Baines/Son of Mine said loudly "Now then, we have a few questions for Mr Smith".
"No, better than that", the little girl piped up "The teacher. He's the Doctor. I heard them talking".
"You took human form", Baines stated.
"Of course I'm human!" the Doctor insisted "I was born human, as were you, Baines. And Jenny, and you, Mr Clark. What is going on? This is madness".
"And a human brain, too!" Baines exclaimed "Simple, thick and dull".
"But he's no good like this", Jenny/ Mother of Mine remarked.
"We need a Time Lord", Mr Clarke stated "the girl smells faintly like one" he pointed at Jenna "Take her".
"You're not taking her anywhere", the Doctor said, moving to stand protectively in front of Jenna "whats the matter with you Mr Clarke?"
"She's no good on her own. We need her and the Doctor", Jenny said.
"Easily done", Baines said stepping forward, raising his gun "Change back", he ordered.
"I don't know what you're talking about", the Doctor insisted.
"Change back!" Baines shouted.
"I literally do not know…" the Doctor started, breaking off when Jenny grabbed Martha and Clarke grabbed Jenna, holding a gun to her head.
"Have you enjoyed it, Doctor, being human?" Baines asked "Has it taught you wonderful things? Are you better, richer, wiser? Then let's see you answer this. Which one of them do you want us to kill? Your friend or your lover? Your choice".
Jenna rammed her elbows into Mr Clarke as hard as she could, forcing him to let go of her. She also snatched his gun off him in the process. "One more move and I blow daddy dearest away", she threatened.
"Oh, the impossible girl is full of fire!" Baines remarked.
"Damn straight", Jenna agreed.
"Shoot her down Son of Mine", Jenny ordered.
"Do, it and we all die together", the brunette shot back.
"Would you really pull the trigger? You look too scared", Baines mocked.
"Scared?" Jenna repeated with a scoffed "I'm not scared. I'm angry. That along with me holding a gun is not a good combination" she tightened her grip on the weapon "Do you want to risk it?" she challenged. The Family lowered their guns. "Martha, get John and everyone else out of here", she ordered.
"I can't leave her…" the Doctor protested as Martha tried to usher him away.
"She'll be fine", Martha assured him. Jenna didn't take her eyes off the Family while everyone ran out of the Village Hall. Once she was sure that everyone was safe, she fired twice at the ceiling, causing debris to rain down, disorientating the Family. Jenna then made her escape, dodging a couple of scarecrows.
"Why are you standing there?!" Jenna asked, seeing the Doctor standing outside with Martha.
"I didn't want to leave you", the Doctor replied.
Jenna sighed "you shouldn't have stayed. You're in danger, now come on!" she grabbed the Doctor's hand and pulled him away. Martha ran after them.
When they got close to the school, Jenna stopped, her face going blank. "Jenna? Jenna are you ok?" the Doctor asked, looking at her worriedly "whats wrong with her?"
"I don't know", Martha admitted. She knew that Jenna often had 'feelings' during their adventures but this…this seemed to be new. The disguised Time Lord touched her arm and she jumped, letting out a gasp.
"Are you alright?" the Doctor questioned.
"Yeah, fine", Jenna replied. She turned to Martha "Get John to the school and keep him there. I've got something I need to do", she instructed.
"There's no way I'm letting you go anywhere alone", the Doctor said firmly.
"You have to", the violet eyed woman insisted. Jenna reached up and touched his face tenderly "I need you safe", she whispered. She kissed him on the lips before taking off. She didn't stop until she reached the woods where the Family's ship was hidden. Jenna stepped inside and grinned. "This is gonna be fun", she stated cracking her fingers. The brunette got to work. After fiddling about the controls, an alarm sounded. Jenna stood back and patiently waited for the Family to arrive.
It wasn't long before they showed up. The four of them were initially shocked by her appearance but then they pleased. "Ah, the impossible girl. You've made our job much easier", Son of Mine remarked with a smirk.
"That's me, always eager to please", Jenna said cheekily. Her expression turned serious "but I'm not here to hand myself over. I'm here to tell you to leave. Take you ship and fly far, far away".
"Why would we do that?" Mother of Mine asked "when we are so close to getting what we want".
"Because you threatened someone I love and I don't take kindly to that", Jenna said, folding her arms "So I'll tell you again. Leave this planet".
"I'm afraid we're going to have decline", Father of Mine said "Son of Mine, detain her!"
The young man tried to grab Jenna but she ducked out of the way, hitting a switch as she did so. "Kaboom", she said and skipped out of ship. The Family paled at the ship announcing the autodestruct of the craft. They dashed out of the ship just before it exploded. "You really should've left when I told you to", Jenna stated.
"Jenna!" the Doctor called suddenly appearing with Martha.
"John? What are you…ah!" Jenna cried out as Son of Mine shot her in the back.
"No!" the disguised Time Lord exclaimed darting forward and grabbing her as she fell.
"Oh god", Martha breathed, going pale.
"Stay with me Jenna" the Doctor pleaded as she gasped in his arms "Stay with me".
'I can help her' the Time Lord's voice echoed from the watch in his pocket 'she'll die if you don't let me out'. The disguised Time Lord looked down at the dying young woman, his heart aching at the pained expression on her face. He didn't want to go but he had to if he wanted Jenna to survive. He shifted his hold on her, taking the watch out of his pocket. The Doctor opened it up and a golden light flooded over them both.
