"We need to go", Jenna said "it's not safe out in the open".
"You're right", the Doctor agreed.
"But where do we go?" Martha asked "no where is safe!"
"I wouldn't say that. A warehouse is a good hiding spot", Jenna spoke up.
"And I guess you know where to find one?" the black woman questioned and the brunette smiled.
"Follow me", Jenna turned and walked away.
The Doctor ran his fingers through Jenna's hair as she slept on the battered sofa, head resting on his lap. Meanwhile, Jack was working away on the laptop. "How was it?" he asked Martha when she returned.
"I don't think anyone saw me", Martha replied "Anything new?"
"I've got this tuned to government wavelengths so we can follow what Saxon's doing", Jack explained tapping the laptop.
"Yeah, I meant about my family", Martha stated.
"It still says the Jones family taken in for questioning. Tell you what, though. No mention of Leo", the Doctor told her.
"He's not as daft as he looks", Martha remarked, handing over a bag of chips to Jack. The Doctor stood up, taking care not to jostle Jenna too much and took the bag that Martha was offering him. "Do you think that Jenna would want some?" she asked. The Time Lord glanced at the slumbering girl.
"Best to let her sleep", he replied quietly "just save her some".
"So, Doctor, who's the Master?" Jack queried "How come the ancient society of Time Lords created a psychopath?"
"And what is he to you?" Martha pressed "Like a colleague or…"
"A friend, at first", the Doctor cut in.
The black woman chuckled "I thought you were going to say he was your secret brother or something", she commented.
The Doctor shot her an unamused look "You've been watching too much TV", he remarked.
Jack frowned "But all the legends of Gallifrey made it sound so perfect", he said.
"Well, perfect to look at, maybe", the Doctor amended "And it was", he sighed "It was beautiful. They used to call it the Shining World of the Seven Systems. And on the Continent of Wild Endeavour, in the Mountains of Solace and Solitude, there stood the Citadel of the Time Lords, the oldest and most mighty race in the universe, looking down on the galaxies below", Jenna opened her eyes and sat up "Sworn never to interfere, only to watch" on the back wall, a W shaped crack appeared. The brunette slowly got up from the sofa and walked toward the crack, unnoticed by the trio. "Children of Gallifrey, taken from their families age of eight to enter the Academy", the Doctor continued "And some say that's when it all began. When he was a child. That's when the Master saw eternity. As a novice, he was taken for initiation. He stood in front of the Untempered Schism. It's a gap in the fabric of reality through which could be seen the whole of the vortex. You stand there, eight years old, staring at the raw power of time and space, just a child. Some would be inspired, some would run away, and some would go mad".
"And for some…its where it all began", Jenna spoke up, from where she now stood by the crack.
"Jenna get away from that", the Doctor said, eyeing the crack warily "its not safe".
The violet eyed young woman gave him a small smile "I'll be fine", she assured him "just remember, words will win this war".
"Jenna, no!" the Time Lord shouted, running toward her. He was too late. She touched the crack and disappeared.
"What the hell just happened?!" Jack exclaimed.
"She's gone", the Doctor whispered, staring at the now blank wall "she's gone".
"She left these behind though", Martha spoke up, gaining the men's attention. She picked up three keys on chains with something attached to them. The Doctor walked over to her and took one, turning it over in his hands.
"Oh, you clever girl", he breathed. At Jack and Martha's confused looks, he added "Jenna made perception filters. It'll allow us to go about unnoticed and let us get to where the Master is".
"And maybe where Jenna is too", Martha added, refusing to believe that the brunette would just up and disappear like that. Not while the Master was around someplace. Jenna had to have a plan! Or at the very least a strong 'feeling'.
Jenna landed in Naiyah's room in the TARDIS with a thud. "Ow", she groaned as she pushed herself to her feet. "Déjà vu", she murmured seeing that all the podiums had a book on them. Now all I needed was the different version of Naiyah's to show up she thought as she walked around the room, taking in all the different books with their various colours and Latin titles going from Primis (First) to Duodecimus (Twelfth). The 13th podium was curiously empty.
"Jenna", Naiyah said, making her turn around.
"Hey", she greeted, seeing that it was the 1st Naiyah "what's wrong?" she asked.
"The Master has done something to the TARDIS", the Time Lady told her "And we need your help". One by one the other Time Ladies appeared just like they did in her dream.
"Ok", Jenna agreed, without hesitation "just out of curiosity why's the last one empty?" she queried.
"That one's yours", the 1st Naiyah answered "but now its not the time for it". She turned and walked out of the room. Jenna followed her as did the other Time Ladies. "Oh my god", Jenna breathed when she finally got to the console room and saw the state it was in "what the hell has he done?"
"He's made it into a Paradox machine", the 12th Naiyah replied.
Jenna lightly touched the console, tears in her eyes "how to change her back?" she asked, her voice cracking with emotion.
"It's really easy", the 1st Naiyah said "put your hands on the console and close your eyes". The young Smith did what she said and the Naiyah's did the same. One by one the Time Lady's started to glow, bathing the console room on a golden hue just like in Jenna's dream. When the light eventually faded, the young woman fell away from the console, unconscious.
Several minutes later, Jack rushed in, toting a large gun. When he saw Jenna on the floor however, he dropped it and went to her side. "Jen?" he shook her shoulder "come on, Jen. Wake up".
"Jack?" Jenna murmured when she finally stirred. She slowly sat up, groaning a little "oh boy, that was not fun", she complained.
"Did you do that?" Jack asked, nodding to the console.
"Yep", the brunette replied, dropping her head onto his shoulder "me and 12 of my friends".
"The Doctor was right about you being impossible", Jack remarked, helping her to her feet "the only thing that kept him going this past year is the fact that you were out of harms way…wherever you were".
Jenna frowned "a year?" she asked, confused "I left you guys not that long ago".
"Well, that crack you took jumped you forward a year", Jack informed her "now lets get you back to the Doctor".
"What exactly happened during the year I missed?" Jenna questioned as they slowly made their way out of the TARDIS, Jack's arm around her waist.
"The Master took over the world with these Toclafane things", the American replied "but thanks to you and your 'friends', that year was reversed".
"So you guys experienced a year that never was", Jenna remarked "no offense but I'm kinda glad I didn't get to see it". Suddenly she got an all too familiar sensation come over her which left her with a very bad feeling.
"Jenna wait up!" Jack called when she bolted down the corridor. He ran after her. Like the many times before, Jenna let the 'feeling' guide her to a set of double doors. She pushed them open, her heart dropping when she saw the Doctor holding onto a dead Master, crying. The brunette made her way over to her boyfriend and tentatively placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry", she whispered.

"Time was, every single one of these people knew your name. Now they've all forgotten you", Martha said as she, Jack, the Doctor and Jenna watched people walking around minding their own business.
"Good", the Doctor said. He was happy that no one save Jenna , Martha, Jack and a handful of other humans knew who he was.
"Back to work", Jack said.
"I really don't mind, though. Come with me", the Doctor insisted.
"I had plenty of time to think that past year, the year that never was, and I kept thinking about that team of mine", the American said "Like you said, Doctor, responsibility".
"Defending the Earth", the Time Lord grinned "Can't argue with that". He went to shake Jack's hand but exposed his vortex manipulator.
"Hey, I need that!" Jack exclaimed.
"I can't have you walking around with a time travelling teleport", the Doctor said, using his sonic on the device "You could go anywhere, twice. The second time to apologise".
"And what about me? Can you fix that? Will I ever be able to die?" Jack asked, already knowing the answer. What happened to him was irreversible.
The Doctor shook his head "Nothing I can do. You're an impossible thing, Jack", he replied.
Jack laughs at that "Been called that before" he starts to leave but turns back and salutes "Sir. Ma'am. Fellow Impossible" Jenna chuckled at his words. Jack turned to leave again and stops "But I keep wondering. What about aging? Because I can't die but I keep getting older. The odd little grey hair, you know? What happens if I live for a million years?"
"You'll become a large head in a jar", Jenna answered and he gave her a weird look. The Doctor and Martha exchanged surprised glances.
"Seriously?" Jack asked.
"Spoilers", Jenna responded with a wink.
"Well, I'll see you guys around", the former time agent said and walked away.
"Jenna…what you said…you can't really mean that he's…" Martha trailed off.
"Oh, I do", the brunette started to smile "Jack Harkness becomes the Face of Boe".
The Doctor shook his head "you and your 'feelings'", he commented, putting his arm around her, dropping a kiss on top of her head. Eventually the trio headed back into the TARDIS. "Right then, off we go. The open road. There is a burst of starfire right now over the coast of Meta Sigmafolio. Oh, the sky is like oil on water. Fancy a look? Or back in time. We could…I don't know, Charles the Second? Henry the Eighth. I know. What about Agatha Christie? I'd love to meet Agatha Christie. I bet she's brilliant", the Doctor rambled.
"Doctor, I'm sorry but I can't", Martha said "I've got people to look after. They saw half the planet slaughtered and they're devastated. I can't leave them".
Jenna hugged her "take care of yourself Martha", she said quietly "if you ever need us, you've got my number", she stepped back "if it's really an emergency and in the event you can't get hold of me, go to 13 Bannerman Road. Its where my mother lives. She's an old companion of the Doctor's so she'll know what to do".
Martha nodded "you better come running the moment I call", she said "that is…if you don't get a 'feeling' first", she added with a grin, making Jenna laugh. Martha then gave the Doctor a hug before leaving the TARDIS one last time. As soon as she was gone, Jenna gave the Doctor a hug. The Time Lord wrapped his arms around her waist and allowed himself to properly grieve for his former friend.
