Assignment 10 - Elemental Magic - Task #1: Fire: Write about someone who loves fiercely.
Race - Remus/Sirius
So much I need to say (I'm sorry that it's on your wedding day)
Sirius steals Remus away, he's just waiting for the priest to say those words...
Sirius is on edge as he stands at Remus' side, watching the proceedings. James' arm brushes against him as James shifts, and he feels James' eyes on him.
Sirius watches Remus. He can read Remus better than anyone. The smile that isn't quite there, the gaze that looks anywhere but at the man he's marrying. Sirius hates every moment of this ceremony.
He missed his chance. James told him to talk to Remus, to admit his feelings, but Sirius did nothing. He said nothing, and now they're at the wedding and he has to watch Remus pledge himself to someone else.
It should be him there.
He clenches his fists, eyes on Remus. His gaze moves down his friend. Remus is Welsh and would look so much better in a kilt, but Ryan insisted they be more traditional in suits. If /he/ was to marry Remus, he'd make sure Remus' legs were on show.
"I hate him," Sirius hisses, his eyes moving to Ryan. The man doesn't deserve Remus. Can he make Remus happy? Can he make Remus the centre of his universe? Because Sirius can. He's missed his chance though.
Growing up, he's held back, even when seeing Remus' growing feelings for him, because he couldn't admit his sexuality. Then it was because he wasn't worthy of Remus. There's always been an excuse or a reason, and now Sirius can see clearly that he's lost Remus through his own fault. His beautiful Remus, who he would do anything for.
"You had your chance," James hisses back. "I've been telling you for years to—"
"Do you mind?" Ryan hisses over at them. "We're in the middle of something here. Can whatever it is you're talking about, wait?"
Remus turns to give them an apologetic look.
James nudges Sirius. Sirius nudges him back. Peter glares at the pair of them before it breaks out into a fight.
Sirius nudges James again for good measure when Peter looks away and James sighs.
"If you loved him as much as you claim, you wouldn't allow him to marry someone else," James murmurs so quickly that the pair can't tell he's talking at all. He doesn't want to disrupt the wedding.
He's right. Sirius needs to stop the wedding. James' message is so very clear. Maybe James didn't say the words, but Sirius can read between the lines.
He focuses on the priest. He stops nudging James, and when he chances a look around, James is watching him suspiciously.
"Speak up or forever hold your peace," the priest finally says, and there it is. The priest is giving him permission to interrupt. It's probably bad luck to interrupt a priest without permission.
"Yes, me!" Sirius shouts loudly, just in case someone else wants to jump in too. He wants to be first. What if someone else tries to win Remus over in this moment?
Remus spins around, and Ryan looks on, his jaw clenched. He moves towards Sirius and Sirius raises his hands.
"Oi, it's my turn to talk," Sirius says. "Remus, what are you doing?"
"No, what are you doing?" Remus asks, amber eyes flashing.
"James just said that I should," Sirius insists. "He said if I don't do this, I'll never get a chance with you. I mean... He didn't say those words. I'm just summarizing what I gathered from… Remus, fuck it, here it is. I'm in love with you, and I'm a fucking idiot who didn't tell you because I've been too scared to and I've made all the excuses in the world."
"What? I thought…" Remus trails off, his brow furrowed. It's quite adorable.
"Look, the way I see it is that you can get married right now. We all know Ryan isn't right for you. Me and James and Peter were talking about it just the other day - after you fell asleep after the stag-do. Or we could leg it. My bike is outside, and it's perfect because you're not in a kilt so you'll be comfortable if we get the hell out of here. What do you say?"
James nudges him hard.
"And we'll get married and stuff. All that jazz. I'm not just saying let's run away and then… nothing. Great sex and living together and… and marriage and whatnot."
"Sirius, my parents are here," Remus hisses, glancing around at his mum.
"Come on. Let's do this," Sirius says. "If you don't want me, if you want this wedding, I won't ever ask again. I'll leave you alone and pretend that you're just my friend, so you'll be happy. Or we can leave. Right now. Start our future together. I know you're all packed up to live with Ryan after this, but come live with me. Wear a kilt to our wedding with nothing underneath. Hell, I'll even wear a kilt if you want!"
Remus turns back to Ryan, and for a moment, he thinks that Remus is making his choice, but Ryan's smug smile fades.
"I'm sorry," Remus says. "I'm so sorry." With that, he spins around, grabs Sirius' hand and they run.
James, the good friend that he is, can sort out the mess. That's what friends are for.
