The Marauders prepare for their first Purge
Inspired by The Purge movies / tv show, but you don't need to have seen them to understand.
(Concept - all crime is allowed for one day every year)
James leads the group into the shop, and Remus follows quickly. They're eighteen now. Eighteen and the laws have changed for them.
Peter is reluctant. They've offered to help him hide for the Purge night, offered to find him a way to stay safe, but he's determined that he wants to stick with them, where he feels safer.
And if one is going out on Purge night, One has to don one of the masks. It's the unspoken rule. You can do whatever you want, but you're not yourself when you do them. You have no face, and there's no name to put with the crimes.
Remus' fingers are shaking as he walks around the shop. His fingers brush over various masks. Some of them are scary to him, some freak him out. Some he can't even bring himself to touch.
He's not really considered his mask before today. He never thought they'd go through with it. He thought it was all talk, but… they're all eighteen. James has led them here, and there's a dangerous determination in his eyes as he looks between them.
The message is clear. Choose your masks or walk away. James won't force anyone into participating, but he clearly expects those that do participate to give it their all.
Remus moves around the shop. Sirius is looking at clown masks, and Remus laughs softly to himself.
"Mate, you already look enough like a clown," James calls to Sirius.
"Bite me," comes the reply.
Remus grins fondly as he continues around the shop, but he reaches a display of animal masks and finds that he can't move.
He's here for vengeance. The law can't touch the man who broke into their home and killed his dad. He was in the school - a safe place, because Purge can't touch those underage - and his mum was working at the hospital - another safe place. But Fenrir came to his home and killed his father out of some jealous rage, he found out later. Remus heard him laughing about it afterwards. His father's best friend. The man discarded a wolf's mask on the floor after slicing his father apart.
And Remus can't let go. His hatred has only grown. He swore years ago that he'd get his revenge, and tonight is the night.
There on the wall is another wolf mask. It's not the same one. It's less terrifying, or perhaps the other one was scary because he was five. But he knows this is his mask. He takes it down and lifts it to his face, his eyes on the mirror. It's perfect.
"Good pick," Sirius says, coming to stand by him. "I was thinking of a dog mask. You know, dog star and all that jazz. Mummy dearest will know it's me then. I want her to know." He points to a black one. "That one. What do you think?"
It's scary. It's fitting. There's something wild about the mask that fits with Sirius. Sirius grins at Remus' nod and he grabs the others, telling them about the theme of animal masks. After consideration and a debate, the others give in. James takes a fancy to a stag mask, and Remus chooses the least threatening of the lot, which incidentally is a rat.
"Mother is going to be delighted to see me tonight," Sirius says, his eyes moving outside. Imagine it, my love. She's held all of this power over me, even now she holds power. I still fear her. But imagine that changing. Imagine me having the power."
Remus understands. The need to get revenge. Sirius has suffered at that woman's hands. If he didn't plan to kill her, Remus would have planned it himself to protect the love of his life. He follows Sirius' gaze to the shop across the road. It's one that opened only a week ago, selling weapons, and he knows that Sirius can't wait to handle the weapons, to experiment with them until he finds the one he'll use. Remus is looking for something to slice Greyback up in the same way the man killed his father. That shop is their next stop. "But… priorities. Remus my love, you know where we're going first - for you to finally get your vengeance."
Remus smiles. He glances down at the mask and is happy with his choice. Greyback, the man in the wolf mask who made him who he is today. It's fitting that it's a wolf that takes him down.
