Bird Business

Remus awakes to a funny tapping sound. He frowns and blinks the sleep from his eyes just as the noise occurs again.

"Sirius," he murmurs. "Do you hear that?"

Sirius groans and rolls over so that he is facing Remus, his eyes peering blearily at him. "All I hear is you waking me up far too early, Remus. The sun isn't even up yet, for God's sa—"

Thwump.

His grey eyes widen, and Remus has to hold back a chuckle. "What was that?" he demands.

Remus shakes his head. "I don't know. That's why I woke you."

He slips out of bed and pulls on a blue jumper while Sirius shrugs into his trademark leather jacket. Remus then grabs Sirius' hand and heads for the living room where the noise seems to be originating.

Once there, the source of the sound is clear—a small bird with vibrant jade feathers is flying into the window pane over and over again. Remus' heart immediately goes out to the tiny creature.

"We have to do something," he says. "It'll kill itself if we let it carry on like this."

Sirius nods, and Remus goes off in search of something to cover the window with. In the spare bedroom that doubles as his office, he finds a roll of masking tape and decides that it will have to do.

He finds Sirius by the front door, pulling on some shoes.

"You found something?" Sirius yawns.

Remus shows him the roll of tape. "This ought to deter the bird."

After Remus puts on his own shoes, he and Sirius traipse outside where the sun is just beginning to rise. Remus is glad that they live in a ground-floor flat—they don't have to worry about climbing on a ladder to reach the living room window.

It doesn't take long for him to place several strips of tape across the window. When he's finished, he stands back to survey his work.

"Looks good," Sirius tells him, wrapping an arm around his waist. "Now, can we please go back inside? I'm freezing."

"Me too." Remus twists and gives his husband a quick peck on the lips. "Thanks for letting me drag you out of bed at such an early hour."

"I think I know of a way you can repay me." Sirius flashes him a grin that takes his breath away. "It involves us getting back into bed…"

Remus doesn't let him finish. He's already pulling Sirius towards the front door, eager to turn a lousy morning into a really, really good one.
