It just may take a little time
The historical items draw Remus to them. They always have, and now he's face to face with them, they do something to him. He remembers, though these memories are not his own. Or... are they?
Remus is on a class trip with university. He's always had a love for ancient history for as long as he can remember, and he's been looking forward to this trip forever. He loves learning about the old items, but there's one display that's been on his mind for so long.
The cases are bright and clean, though some contain a few fingerprints where people have touched them, but Remus focuses on the contents. Remus scribbles notes as they walk around, filling page after page of his notebook, noting all the little facts that he didn't know beforehand and having the time of his life.
"These items move every year between countries, to various museums and displays. We're lucky to have them here," he hears the guide say, but he doesn't listen to any more of them. This is the reason he loves History. He saw the picture of these ancient jewels in a book when he was smaller, and he felt drawn to them in a way he had never been before.
The collection, the Immortal Constellation, is even more beautiful in person and Remus withdraws his phone to take a picture. One day he'll study these up close, he knows. He'll be able to (with gloves) touch the precious items. Be able to study history himself.
They're beautiful. His gaze moves over to the ring that is a natural black opal. There are gold dots inside, forming the Canis Majoris constellation. Another of Remus' loves, he enjoys looking to the sky and seeing the beauty up there as well as on Earth. The diadem is petrified wood. Fossilised remains that have been transformed into stone by permineralization. But the item is twisted into a crown and into antlers. The next item is a bracelet with alexandrine that's naturally formed into the shape of a small animal. What seems to be the animal's tail wraps around it, forming the band.
The last item twists something inside of him. He knew it'd be beautiful in person, but seeing it up close and not in a book or on the internet is doing something. It makes his head hurt. His desire to reach out and touch it is almost unbearable, but the glass prevents that.
A beautiful talisman of moonstone merged with a rare amber that he's sure is the same colour as his eyes. It's been fashioned into a pendant. It's the most beautiful thing Remus has ever seen in his life, and he can't understand his desire to possess it, like it's made for him. It has small grooves in it, and it reminds him of a wolf. He's not sure why, but he supposes it's like how people see images in clouds. He can see a wolf in the grooves of the talisman.
That's stupid. It's been around for hundreds of thousands of years. That desire to possess it is completely unfounded.
His eyes finally fall to an old parchment. The books claim that the parchment is empty, except for four names.
Prongs, Padfoot, Moony and Wormtail.
But… that's wrong. Remus can see more on the parchment. What looks like a map. There is definitely a map on that.
"We believe that the four individuals created these items. All we have is the blank parchment with their names, that was found alongside the items," the tour guide says.
Remus feels other people crowding around. He waits for someone else to comment on the map, but no-one says anything and he's so confused.
He forces himself to step away from it. But as he takes a step, he's sure /The Marauders/ shimmers onto the page. The letters are shiny, beautiful, new, and Remus wonders if he's going mad. But the group is moving and he's pulled away.
He can't remember a single moment of the rest of the trip. He can't stop thinking about these items.
And as Remus leaves the museum, fighting the pull to go back and look once more, his head starts to spin. He drops down onto a bench, head in hands.
A man touching the diadem, and the wood following his fingers as he moves them. His touch causing it to grow and change.
He hears people talking around him.
Another man lifting the bracelet and admiring it. The item shining under his touch and the bracelet running around his arm, as though it were really an animal.
People asking if he's okay. He can hear his professor. His head throbs and feels tender.
'Darling, I made you this talisman. It'll protect you forever. The most beautiful item in the universe for the most beautiful man in the universe.'
Remus feels sick as he opens his eyes. It's hurting. But that voice was filled with a devotion he had never heard before. He somehow manages a smile, however, insisting that he's fine. That he's going to head home though. He excuses himself as the last thought comes to mind.
He lifts his own hand, the ring held carefully between his fingers. His hand brushes over it and the pure black opal sparkles as though the constellation is actually in the stone, even for just a moment. They fade, leaving the pattern he's familiar with. 'For you, my love.'
The thought hurts. It fights, searing itself into his head, and Remus feels a familiarity to it, but it's too much for his mind right now.
Everything starts to go black. But when he wakes up, he knows nothing will be the same.
