Just meet me where I am
Remus is somehow responsible for Sirius. Fireman!AU
Remus has dealt with quite a few fires, but he wouldn't consider himself an expert at this job. It's scary to run into these houses to save people. He reminds himself that it's dangerous because he never wants to get complacent. He's been here long enough (and not even all that long) to realise that complacency is the best way to end up hurt. Or worse.
But he's been put in charge of the new transfer, Sirius Black, and he has had a total of two conversations with him and he's quite scared because he can see the reckless nature of the man. He can see that he's the sort to run in crazily and just do stupid things, but there's no evidence in his record of this, and gut feelings about people aren't really all that good enough.
So he keeps a close eye on the other man, who appears to be keeping an even closer eye on him, because Sirius Black doesn't stop staring at him, and Remus is quite baffled as to why.
The first two fires go well. Lives are saved and none are lost. The fire is stopped from spreading and that's what matters. It's when they reach a house with two children when things go wrong.
Because Sirius takes one look at the kids in the window and he throws himself at the front door, not even checking it for heat, and Remus has to sprint over there, grabbing him and yanking him back as hard as he can whilst Sirius fights to get back to the door.
"Are you stupid," Remus shouts. "You didn't check the door."
"It's fine," Sirius says. "Look, there are kids in there." He tries to get away, and Remus doesn't want to waste time either. He's certainly not the boss, so he can't tell Sirius what to do.
Sirius rushes back and he grabs at the handle, but he cries out and swears, and pulls his hand away. "Fuck."
"Go to the truck and put something—"
"Not a fucking chance. These kids need saving and I can't do it on my own."
"No one said you had to," Remus shouts. "This is why you check the doors."
He drags Sirius back to the truck and hands him a hose. "If you get hurt, there's one less of us to help this family. This is not about you coming here and playing the hero. This is about us. Together. A team. Sirius, we all want to save them, but right now, we're wasting time because you're not following the rules."
Sirius looks a little ashamed. "Let me climb up to them at least," he says. "Please. I'll listen. I'll do things right." The ladder is starting to lift, and Remus, angry as he is, can't stop himself. He nods his head. "Fine. You do that, but we're having words later."
Sirius jumps on the ladder and starts to climb as it extends some more. "Yeah, we'll talk over dinner," Sirius says. He winces with each grip of the ladder and Remus moves to the bottom of the ladder in order to help with the children. This time when he shouts instructions, Sirius listens to every word. The children get out safely, as does their mother.
The fire continues, but then the sky opens up and the rain starts, and Remus counts it as a win as it aids their efforts to stop the fire from spreading.
The house is screwed, but in Remus' opinion, items can be replaced.
They do talk over dinner. Remus tells Sirius off, and then Sirius innocently holds up his thoroughly bandaged hand, explains how he can't use it for a week, and he might need help undressing that night.
Remus is happy to help, and once Sirius is undressed, there is little talking to do.
