A/N: This chapter focuses a little more on Trevor's family. I don't own any of the characters except my own.
The next morning arrived quickly. Olive had been introduced to her daughter but she knew she couldn't nurse her because of the anesthesia. Katie had come in early even though she wasn't working.
"Morning."
"Hey."
"How are you feeling?"
"Pretty good. I really want to nurse her though."
"You should be able to by tomorrow. You just need to get the anesthesia out of your system."
"I thought you were off today."
"I am. I had to come get Josh anyway, since his car is in for service. I'm off today and he's hopefully off tonight. If I can do it, I'm trying to take more days off a week. It's hard being on my feet so much and being pregnant. Can I hold my niece?"
"Of course."
Katie took Maggie from Olive and sat down.
"Did Mom survive?"
"As far as I know. I didn't get any calls from her."
Josh was standing in the doorway.
"I like this sight."
"Pretty soon. You look like hell."
"Thanks a lot."
"Long night?"
"That's putting it mildly."
"Aw, my poor baby! Do you want to hold her?"
"Sure."
Josh came in and sat down. Katie handed Maggie to him and then she headed to the washroom. Once she was finished she had walked back out into the hallway, not realizing that the floor was slippery, she ended up falling. One of the nurses saw her
"Katie, are you ok?"
"I don't know. I hurt my foot but I'm worried about the baby. Josh is in Olive Langan's room."
The nurse ran into Olive's room, while another one called the orderlies to get a gurney.
"Josh, Katie just fell. She said she hurt her foot but she's worried about the baby."
"Trev, can you call Mom?"
"I will."
Josh handed Maggie to Olive and ran out of the room. Katie was on the gurney and had ice on her foot.
"I'm scared."
"We'll get everything checked out."
One of the OBGYNs on call saw them.
"Katie, what happened?"
"I came out of the washroom and slipped on the floor. My foot hurts but I'm worried about the baby."
"You're a little over 5 months pregnant, so everything should be fine. We will do an ultrasound just to make sure but you may have to stay here for the night for observation."
"I'll let the ER know you're coming."
"Thanks."
They took Katie down to the ER and most of her co-workers were surprised to see her. They put her in a room and then she went to x-ray right away, while Josh went to take care of the rest. Once Josh got her registered, he went back to her room and sat down but ended up falling asleep. By the time she came back, her best friend was at the desk, so she came into the room with her.
"You ok?"
"I hope so."
"Rough night for Josh?"
"He said it was. All I did was visit my new niece and then I end up falling on the wet floor."
"Which the hospital should be responsible for."
Their Supervisor was standing in the doorway.
"She's right."
"I feel so stupid."
"I could have been any of us. I fell on the ice in the parking lot a couple years ago and they took care of everything."
"I remember that.
"I do too. Is he alive?"
"He was. He was out when I came back from x-ray."
"Trevor is here."
"He can come in."
"Ok. I'll check on you later."
"Me too."
They both left and then Trevor came in.
"We have a problem."
"What now?"
"Mom's knee gave out when she tried getting out of bed this morning. She ended up calling Dan and then the ambulance. Nicole is at our place with the kids and Dan is coming in with Mom. Jamie should be there soon anyway."
"Mom's been trying to ignore the fact that she has to have surgery."
"Yeah, I know. She could probably stay with us during her recovery, since I'm basically going to be working from home unless I have to be somewhere and Olive will be home until after the first of the year."
"Is Olive ok with this?"
"She is."
"Did you by any chance call Colleen and Rick?"
"I texted both of them to call me when it was convenient."
"Ok."
They saw Denise being wheeled into the room next door to Katie. Trevor went to see what was going on.
"Hey, Mom."
"Hey, Sweetie. How's Katie?"
"She's still scared. I don't think they have done the ultrasound yet. Josh is with her but he's asleep. I texted both Rick and Colleen and asked them to call me when it was convenient. If you want to stay with us during your recuperation, you can. Olive is home until the first of the year anyway and I'm working from home unless I have to be somewhere."
"Ok."
"Good. How were the kids?"
"Pretty good actually."
"Good."
"How are your girls?"
"Great. Olive was giving Maggie a bottle when I came down here. She may be able to start nursing her tomorrow once the anesthesia is out of her system."
"How's Diana?"
"I haven't seen her or Ed yet today."
Then Sheila came in with the forms for Denise to fill out.
"Trevor, your father-in-law said to tell you that he went up to see Olive."
"Ok. Thanks."
"I told Katie that the hospital should be responsible for all this."
"Yes, they should."
"They're good about that too. I fell in the parking lot on the ice a couple years ago and broke my wrist. They took care of everything including my surgery and physical therapy. I hope Katie doesn't need surgery."
"Same."
"Me too."
Someone came in to take Denise to x-ray and then Trevor's phone rang, so Sheila went to check on Katie.
"You need anything?"
"No. I'm ok. Thanks for asking though."
"Sure."
Josh woke up.
"Mom's knee finally gave out."
"That sucks."
"Trevor said she could probably stay with them while she is recuperating."
"Ok."
The OBGYN came in to do the ultrasound.
"Let's have a look."
The doctor put the stuff on Katie's abdomen.
"Everything looks good and the heartbeat is strong but as I said before, I'd like to keep you overnight for observation."
"Ok."
"I'll go start the paperwork to have you admitted."
"Thanks."
The doctor left and then Sheila cleaned off Katie's abdomen and then her Supervisor came in again.
"Everything ok?"
"With the baby, yes. I'm still waiting for the results of my x-rays."
"Take as much time as you need off. Once you're back, you will be off your foot obviously."
"At the desk answering calls."
"Yep."
"Oh, fun. I need to go."
Josh and Sheila helped her up and then Katie tried putting weight on her foot.
"Ow!"
"It's probably broken."
"You think so?"
Josh and Sheila got Katie to the washroom and then they left her in there. Once she was done, they went in to help her up.
"I'm sorry I snapped at you."
"I get it. I'm used to it and not just from you."
"I'm really scared for our baby."
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
They took her back to her room.
"Hey, Mom."
"Hey, Sweetie."
"Have you seen a doctor yet?"
"Other than for the ultrasound, no.
"Let me go see if I can find out where your x-rays are."
"Thanks, Honey."
"No problem."
Josh went to check on Katie's x-rays and came back.
"They're not up yet."
"Why don't you go grab breakfast? You obviously haven't had your coffee yet?"
"Can I get you anything?"
"Tea and a bagel and cream cheese. Take Trevor with you."
"Ok."
Josh kissed Katie and then he went to where Denise was. He and Trevor went to have breakfast.
"You have such an amazing guy."
"I know I do. Patrick is a great guy too."
"Yeah, he is. I do want a baby before I'm 40 but I don't want to scare Patrick off. We haven't been together all that long. What if this doesn't last? The last thing I want to do is raise a baby on my own."
"Josh and I started seeing each other after Thanksgiving and we were married 7 months later. Did either of us expect that to happen? No but we wanted to make things official before the baby came. It's not like we planned it. We just weren't too careful."
"The problem is, Patrick isn't Josh."
Then Patrick stopped in.
"I ran into Josh and he said you were down here. You ok?"
"The baby is fine but I haven't gotten the results of my x-rays back yet. On top of that, my mom's knee gave out, so she is more than likely going to need surgery."
"That's good. Sheila, are you mad at me?"
"You just haven't returned my phone calls and we haven't talked in over a week. If you would much rather be with that hot, young nurse, I get it."
"Let's go somewhere to talk."
"I'm working."
"Just give me 5 minutes. Please?"
"Ok, fine."
Sheila and Patrick left and went to talk.
"Barb, can you go check on my mom?"
"Sure."
Barb went next door and checked on Denise and then she came back."
"She's doing ok. She's a little anxious about the surgery."
"I just wish I could be there with her. All I did was come to get Josh and visit my new niece while I was waiting for him. If I hadn't fallen on the floor, I wouldn't be in here waiting for the results of my x-rays."
"The baby is fine and you're foot is probably broken. They will probably put you in a boot instead of putting a cast on it. As soon as Dr. Jensen gets your results, he'll be down."
"Trevor doesn't need this either. He should be upstairs with his wife and daughter."
Josh and Trevor had come back and Dr. Jensen was with them. Josh came in to Katie's room and set her tea, bagel and cream cheese on the table, while Trevor went back into Denise's room.
"Hey, Katie."
"Hey, Dr. Jensen."
"Your foot is broken but it's nothing that requires surgery. We will put you in a boot for 6 weeks or so and I want you to take it easy as much as possible."
"I know and I'll be answering phones at the Nurses Station once I'm back to work. Barb already told me."
"Right and I know Dr. Reynolds wants to admit you overnight for observation. The patient in the next room is your mother, correct?"
"Yes."
"Why don't we get you a boot and a wheelchair and you can come in with me to see her."
"Ok. Thanks."
"I got that."
"Thanks, Josh."
"Sure."
Josh went to get a boot and a wheelchair and then he came back. He helped Katie put the boot on and then they helped her into the wheelchair. Barb went back to the Nurses Station, while everyone else went to Denise's room.
"Hi Denise. I'm Dr. Jensen."
"Hi."
"Hey, Trevor."
"Hey."
"You do have to have surgery."
"That's what I figured."
"I would like to do this as soon as possible."
"Mom, the sooner you get it over with, the quicker you can start recovering."
"I know. Ok, I'll do it."
"Ok. We will have you moved to pre-op. Have you eaten anything today?"
"No."
"I'll go with you until they take you in. I need to check on Olive and Maggie and then I need to go home and grab a shower."
"Ok."
"I'm being admitted in Obstetrics just for observation, which hopefully will be soon, so I'll be here."
"Once she gets moved, I will go home and grab a shower but I will be back."
"Rick's shift just started this morning but if he can find someone to cover for him, he'll come out. Colleen was in the process of getting plane reservations as we were talking on the phone. She was having breakfast with Josh's mother, so don't be surprised if she shows up as well."
Katie and Josh both kissed Denise and then Trevor went with her to pre-op. After a while, she was taken into surgery. Trevor went back to Olive's room. Olivia was there holding the baby.
"Honey, is everything ok?"
"They just took Mom into surgery. Katie broke her foot but nothing major, so she's in a boot. Everything appears to be ok with the baby but she's being admitted for observation by Dr. Reynolds. Mom is taking us up on staying at our place while she is recovering."
"That's perfectly fine."
"If you need help with the kids, Hank and I are more than willing to help out."
"We'll keep that in mind. Thank you."
"Sure."
"Have you seen Diana yet?"
"She's doing better. She's ready to go home. Hank said they're planning to come see her later this morning and he's hoping they can talk Ed into leaving for a little while for lunch."
Then Ed stopped in.
"Are you in a hurry?"
"Not really."
"Can you stay with her for a while, so I can run home and grab a shower?"
"Sure. Hank, Al, Meredith, Trudy and Mouch are planning to come by later and Hank hopes to get you to go to lunch with them."
"Where are they planning to go?"
"The usual place. I'm meeting everyone there."
"I'm sure something can be arranged. I'll be back."
"Ok."
Ed left and then Olivia went to Diana's room after she handed Maggie to Olive. Trevor left and headed home to take a shower.
"Hey."
"Hey. I don't need a babysitter."
"He doesn't want to leave you for that long."
Diana rolled her eyes.
"Are you avoiding going in?"
"I was here to talk to a vic but she's being uncooperative."
"In other words, you haven't been able to make an arrest yet."
"That about sums it up. Some days are better than others."
"I know. You can't force her to talk."
"No, I can't. Hank said the 5 of them were going to come see you later this morning and he was hoping to be able to talk Ed into going to lunch with them."
"The Pub?"
"Where else? I'm meeting them there."
"I'll have to have Edward bring me back some rice pudding. I miss my babies."
"Have you talked to them at all?"
"Erin called and we did a video chat this morning before she took them to school. Is Hank taking Noah to school?"
"He is. Once he picks him up and takes him home, he'll head here."
"I wish Trudy and Mouch would move here."
"Hank said the same thing last night. Do you think you'd stay working until the mandatory retirement age?"
"I haven't even thought about it. How about you?"
"I don't know either. I have the years of service in though. We still have two young kids to get through school. Neither is in Kindergarten yet."
"I get that. I can't believe Kara just started 7th grade. Where has the time gone?"
"She'll be starting her period soon too."
"I know. I can't wait to see how Edward handles that. What's going on otherwise?"
"Trevor's mother is having knee surgery as we speak. Katie fell and broke her foot. The baby seems to be ok but Dr. Reynolds wants to keep her overnight for observation."
"I hope she's ok. A part of me kind of wishes I had met Ed sooner, so I could have at least tried to give him a child."
"I feel the same way about Hank. If I had realized my feelings for him sooner, maybe it could have happened. I would have loved to have experienced it just once. I feel like I let Hank down because I lost the baby. I still sometimes think about what could have been."
"At least it didn't cause problems for your marriage."
"I'm very grateful for that. I wouldn't have gotten though any of what happened in the last almost 2 years without Hank. I still feel so bad about how I talked to you that day at the Precinct."
"I'm the one that should be sorry. I was being a bitch, so I did deserve it. I just hope I'm as lucky as you were with my results. I'm still scared. I also know that something like this could happen to Kara when she's older."
"Hank said the same thing had his and Camille's daughter lived."
"I just wanted to be a better mother to her than my mother was to me."
"I can understand that. Nothing I ever did was good enough for my mother."
"Same with me."
"You'll get through this and I will be here for you no matter what."
"I wish we had met sooner."
"I know. Me too."
Then Hank, Al, Meredith, Trudy and Mouch came in.
"I thought you were going to work."
"I was. The vic is being uncooperative and then I went to see Olive and the baby. Ed was heading home to grab a shower and asked if I could stay with Diana until he got back. Did Noah give you any problems?"
"Actually, no."
"Good. I thought you were waiting to come here until after you picked him up."
"Jay stayed home with Camille, so Lucy said she could go get him. Erin nursed her before she left but all she wanted was her Dada. He called to make an appointment for her and got her in this afternoon."
"Ok. I should go if they're here."
"Ok. I'll talk to you later."
Olivia hugged Diana.
"Do you want me to walk you out?"
"I'm fine."
Olivia left and headed to the Precinct.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing that I know of. None of us slept much last night because Camille was up all night."
Then Ed came back.
"What's wrong with Olivia? She's sitting in her SUV crying."
"I'll be back."
Hank left and went downstairs. He went to the parking lot and found Olivia's SUV. He knocked on the window. She got out and they wrapped their arms around each other.
"Tell me what's wrong?"
"I've been thinking about our baby again. When is the pain going to go away?"
"I don't know, Babe. I really don't. It may never. We have each other and I'm not goin' anywhere."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"I'll let you know when we are headed over to the Pub."
"Ok."
Olivia kissed Hank and then got back into her SUV to head to the Precinct. Hank went back up to Diana's room and then they all talked for a while. Once Trevor was done in the shower and got dressed, he went to the airport to pick up Colleen and Josh's mother before heading back to the hospital.
Several hours later, everyone left Diana and headed to the Pub for lunch. Trudy told Ed that she and Mouch would stay with Diana for a while, so he could spend some time with the kids. Diana convinced him that she would be ok on her own for the night, so to spend the entire night with the kids. Denise had just gotten out of surgery and was in recovery. Colleen went to be with her after spending some time with Katie and Olive and the baby.
Later on, Jay took Camille to the doctor and it turned out she had an ear infection. Ed went to pick up the kids from school and took them out for dinner. Afterwards they did their homework and they did a video call with Diana before Brandon went to bed. Olive had convinced Trevor to go home as well. She and Maggie would be fine on their own. Colleen was with Denise and Josh was staying with Katie.
