The Truth Behind the Light
Chapter 10
Previously: "Harry this way." He called to catch his attention, gesturing to a door that was partially open. Harry slowly for a moment as he glanced in the direction of where he thought the dining hallway. Severus couldn't help but chuckle at the confused look on his son's face before he pushed the door open further. He walked over, glancing into the room. He froze when he saw the woman from the pictures in his father's office standing in the center of the room, facing the fireplace. Her hair was curlier and wilder than he would have expected but he knew it was her, his mother. Severus watched as his son, their son, ran towards Bellatrix, nearly sending them both tumbling to the floor when he hugged her from behind. His smaller arms barely wrapped around her waist. The witch froze before she managed to raise her arms enough to look down at the boy.
"And who are you?" she questioned with a curious tone. The potion's master sucked in a deep breath, realizing that perhaps Lord Slytherin hadn't informed his wife of their discovery. He slowly stepped forward, placing his hand on her shoulder to gain her attention. She glanced at him for a moment before she looked down at the boy, her eyes connecting with his.
"Hadrian…" she whispered, her voice failing her as she stared down at the son she'd thought she'd lost.
Continued: Bellatrix stood by the dining table with her arms raised, staring down at the young man with his arms wrapped around her waist. Severus stepped forward when she turned her attention back to her husband, her eyes wide in wonder. Harry tightened the grip he had around her waist, hoping that she would return the gesture and not shove him away.
"Bella…I still don't understand why or how but…Hadrian wasn't the baby we found. He has been with…with Zia Potter. Someone switched the two babies and I found out when he got his Hogwarts Letter." Severus explained. She slowly looked back down at him, tears gathering in her eyes as she stood frozen, shocked at the news that their baby was still alive. Harry looked up at her, slowly loosening his grip when she sank to her knees, pulling him into her arms. He breathed a sigh of relief, clinging to the woman. Severus stood back with a fond smile on his face, glancing over his shoulder. He faltered for a moment when he spotted Zia standing in the doorway, a longing look on her face. She caught the Potions Master's gaze and quickly ran from the room.
"How are you here? Dad…dad said that you were in prison." Harry whispered after several long, silent moments between mother and son.
"Marvolo and Lucius managed to pull some strings since…there was never actually any proof that I was the guilt one. Just that I was there that night." She whispered, resting her head against her son's unruly hair. Severus knew that Dumbledore was going to be furious about Bellatrix being out of Azkaban, but he would just have to convince the headmaster that he hadn't heard anything from the Dark lord or from his wife. He took a deep breath, knowing he had to keep the 'Leader of Light' thinking that he was his spy.
"Come on you two. Neither of you can afford the miss any meals." Severus stated offering them both a small smile. He wrapped his arm around his wife's waist and around his son's shoulder. The small family of three walked towards the main hall where everyone else was already seated. Harry glanced at his parents before he made his way over to Zia and Draco, sitting beside his sister. She offered him a sad smile before resting her head against his shoulder, both twin sitting in silence. Bella shared a concerned look with her husband before turning their attention back to their own conversation.
After dinner Harry and Zia excused themselves with the excuse of heading to bed early. None of the adults called them on the lie, understanding that they had been going through a lot of changes over a short period of time. Narcissa understood that they were both just children that hadn't grown up within a stable home and she hoped they wouldn't have to return to those muggles. Once they had gotten back to his room, Harry climbed onto his bed, pulling the package from under his pillow.
"What is that?" Zia questioned as she settled beside him, looking at the faded cream-colored envelope.
"I think…its from your parents. I haven't opened the parcel yet and I've only gotten maybe halfway through the first page of the letter." He explained, unfolding the parchment. He laid on his side, reading the letter from Lily Potter.
'When our little boy died Zia felt the hole her twin's death had left and for several days there was no way we could ease her pain. So, when you were brought to us, and she finally started laughing again we kept the secret. However, James and I both put the truth in our wills so I can only hope that you were returned safely to your parents and that they have raised Zia as their own alongside you. However, we both know that there are going to be some who wish to see you used and manipulated.
Next I would like to give you a warning. No matter what happens I want you to know you cannot trust Albus Dumbledore. He is not as light as everyone seems to think and he was the wizard that ordered you to be kidnapped from your parents. I know you have probably heard from several that we betrayed the Dark Lord and I just want you to know that that is not true. We had received a message that we thought was from Lord Marvolo. When we arrived at the house where we were told to meet we discovered it was a trap. Albus had warded the house against our magical signature and threatened our twins. I understand that we probably should have known it was a trap, but we didn't think Albus would have any way to get a letter to us. I recognized you the moment you were brought to us but knew if we didn't take you than he would do something worse.
Which brings me to the last thing in this letter. We gave you a potion that I personally made sure wouldn't fade unless you were given the antidote for your protection. Normally I would have just left the instructions for your father to make it but this time…I prepared the potion that has been placed under statis until you entered the Malfoy manor where I have tasked a trusted house elf with getting you the package. When you take the potion, the effects will be small at first, but it will take about 24 hours for potion to have completely worn off. We have also included a gift that has strong glamour charms that will help convince others that you still look like the son of James Potter. I wish I could see what a handsome young man you are growing into, and we both loved you just as much as our own son.
With Love
Lily and James Potter
Harry reached up, wiping the tears that had gathered in his eyes. Zia hugged her brother tight, glancing at the package that still sat untouched on the bed beside them. They both looked up when there was a soft knock on the door to draw their attention. Bellatrix stood in the doorway with her hand still raised. She offered them a small smile before she stepped inside, walking over to the bed.
"I wanted to come wish the two of you good night. I heard it's been an…eventful day for the both of you." She explained softly. Her gaze landed on the package and the letter still clutched tight in her son's hands.
"What is that?" the black-haired woman questioned, picking up the package while glancing at Zia. She already figured she wouldn't get an answer out of Harry with the expression on his face. The eleven-year-old girl looked down at the sheets for a moment before glancing at her brother.
"It's a letter from my mom and dad." She explained once she'd received a small nod. Bellatrix glanced between the two of them confused at their explanation.
"Care to explain that one?" Severus suddenly questioned, standing in the doorway with his arms crossed. He raised an eyebrow when his son inched further into the pillows on his bed, clearly nervous that he was going to get into trouble. He walked over and sat on the bed next to Zia, glancing between the two before he held out his hand for the letter. Harry held it closer to his chest, reluctant to give it up. He knew his parents wouldn't hit him like Uncle Vernon had but he wasn't sure what his punishment would be for arguing.
"Harry we aren't going to keep it. We just want to know what it says." Bellatrix offered, giving her husband a warning look when he opened his mouth to object. After several more silent moments Harry finally handed the parchment to his father, rubbing his eyes to rid them of tears. Bellatrix carefully sat on the bed next to him, drawing him into her arms as Severus read the letter. His eyes darkened the further down he read, knowing that Marvolo would want to read it for himself. The fact the Dumbledore had stooped low enough to not only trap members of an ancient and noble house against their wills but also threaten the lives of the heirs to that house.
"Have you opened the package yet?" Severus questioned as he carefully folded the letter back, sitting it on the nightstand closest to him. Harry managed to shake his head no without lifting it from where it was resting against his mother's chest. Bellatrix gently carded her fingers through his hair, watching as he closed his eyes relaxing.
"Do you want me to open it Harry?" Zia questioned, gently placing her hand on her brother's shoulder. He shook his head sitting up, grabbing the package from where his mother had sat it. He took a deep breath before pulling at the ribbon, not taking his eyes off it as he opened the top. Zia noticed the box had several things each mark with either his name or hers. She sucked into a deep breath when he passed her three small packages before pulling out the three that had his name. Severus glanced in the box noticing only one item remained, but it held both of their names and it said Engorgio. He shared a look with Bella before turning his attention back to Harry and Zia. Zia had received a necklace that Severus knew James had given to Lily with the twins' birthstone, remembering he'd had one for each of them. He glanced at the necklace his son had pulled out of it's protected pouch, recognizing it as James'. He couldn't help but smile at the thought of James Potter leaving Harry something that had meant so much to their family.
"Dad…is…is it alright if I take this before bed?" Harry questioned, holding the potion bottle out for him to check.
"You can take it and then open that last gift. Something tells me its something all of us are going to want to see." Severus suggested, pulling his wand from the pocket of his robe. He chuckled when his son released a yawn, figuring the small boy was still worn out from the Goblin's rituals that morning. Bella held the cork from the potion while Severus enlarged the gift. Zia ripped the wrapping away, revealing a golden frame while Harry downed the potion. All four froze when they saw the frozen portrait of Lily and James Potter, knowing having thought they'd had a magicial portrait painted before their deaths. Zia and Harry shared an amazed look before she raised her hand to brush it against the frame, tears shining in her eyes at finally seeing a picture of her parents.
