Merlin had always liked trees. Trees didn't care if you rambled to them about your day or if you got too excited about finding the perfect skipping stone. They didn't care if you came to them in tears. They only listened and shielded you away from the world below in their leafy branches. But most of all, they kept quiet about a lone child's plights and secrets.

When Arthur fantasied being reunited with Merlin, he imagined giving the insufferable man the constantly demanded hug (only to later denying giving it, of course), or with Merlin simply walking through the doors of the throne room without knocking and calling Arthur a prat in front of everyone. He never imagined this.

Things are just harder for Merlin around this time of year, and there's not anything that can ever make it better, but he's learned to shut up and smile, he's learned how to keep his chin up, how to hold his head so high no one can hear it when he breaks. But oh, God, he breaks.

Magnus admits his insecurities, so Alec swears to show his boyfriend that he is perfect, and with the help of the Lightwoods and their friends, Alec works to show Magnus the truth
