Chapter One: A summer break…from everything

Hope Mikaelson knew what she was going to do was dangerous. After everything that the so called magic instructor Bonnie 'I'm such a powerful witch' Bennett had said about the vampire race and how the Original Witch Esther Mikaelson used dark magic to create them, she added that Esther (calling her the Evil Mother Witch) had amplified their destructive tendencies which caused them to be filled with hate.

Hope didn't want to believe it though she heard the stories from Josie and Lizzie Saltzman as well as Caroline St. John and Bonnie. Though while the two 'adults' (she didn't believe they were) had been talking in hushed voices, Josie and Lizzie were blathering about it to the point that Hope just broke down.

She remembered the motto her mother had taught her when she was upset.

"Mikaelsons don't show weaknesses in front of their enemies but in front of their friends and allies."

Tears fell from her eyes but she wiped them away as the clock struck midnight and she left the school, backpack slung across her back.

She didn't want to go home to a father who hated her, no matter what her mother had said.

The last class with Bonnie solidified that.

"Now while witches are the paragons of virtue," Bonnie was telling the class as she was standing at her desk. "Vampires and hybrids of various types are not. They are abominations." Hope knew that the witch wanted to call out that tribrids were the pariahs of everything as the tone of her voice suggested it. "Can anyone tell me what can kill a vampire werewolf hybrid?" Lizzie's hand was in the air. "Lizzie?"

"Staking them, burning them with fire, ripping their hearts out and beheading them," the blonde intoned with a smug smirk. "That's what can kill a hybrid of a vampire and a werewolf."

Hope wanted to smack her face but kept herself in control.

"Very good Lizzie," Bonnie said smiling at her. "What can you tell me about how a vampire witch hybrid is made…Hope?" Hope looked at her curiously.

"A vampire witch hybrid-a Heretic to be precise-is one of the two vampire witches in history and the only known one to be documented," Hope listed off as her mind was elsewhere. "They're created when a Siphoner like Lizzie or Josie is bitten and transitions into a vampire." She didn't look at the two girls as some of the classmates were snickering at the Saltzman twins who were blushing.

Bonnie gave a subtle glare at Hope but nodded.

"A Siphoner witch of any gender should have been the appropriate answer," Bonnie said as she slammed her palms on the desk. "Hope you have detention."

No, Hope didn't as Bonnie was solely on the whole 'witches are better and superior' route and Hope didn't want to be in a school where they would tease and taunt her for her lineage.

The moment she was off the school's property she made her way to the bus stop and looked at the man, who had her get on and sit in the front with him.

He had been wary about a young girl with a sad look on his face as he watched her walk towards the bus stop.

"Where's your destination little one?" He asked her as he wanted to make sure she got to wherever it was.

"Far away from here," she whispered and her accent was that of a New Orleans kid. "I want to get as far away from here as possible."

"The closest would be New York kid," he said and as she went to pull some money from her pocket he held a hand, "this is a free ride as long as you have someone waiting for you there and they can pay."

As Hope looked out of the window, her eyes were a mess of unshed tears as she didn't want to go home-not to a family that would hate her and didn't understand the concept of kindness and love.

She knew that her mother loved her-that was obvious but…her father and his siblings hated her.

That was what she was taught, anyway. Vampires and hybrids were filled with hate and while she didn't believe it, the voices of Caroline Forbes and Bonnie Bennett filled her mind.

"Klaus never wanted a child," Caroline had said when the blonde thought she and Bonnie were alone, "he was ready to kill the child. No one knows what stopped him."

"He's probably found a way to use his child," Bonnie had scoffed. "He's a megalomaniac who craves more and more power. Remember how he had almost killed everyone in town? No one knows what or who stopped him."

Hope had heard everything when she went to get her art supplies that Caroline had taken from her, claiming that her supplies weren't necessary.

The tears finally fell and she curled up into a ball, silently crying.

Hayley Marshall Mikaelson was wary as she entered the school, being called as there was something they needed to talk to her about.

The moment she entered, she felt a slight shiver and turned to see Klaus was there, outside as he was waiting for his daughter as he was just woken up from an almost four year nap thanks to some witches. His siblings were there as well, each one nervous about meeting Hope again though Davina Claire and Marcel Gerard had been fixtures in their lives.

"Did you come and collect Hope last night?" Caroline asked her as the blonde vampire appeared in front of her.

"No," Hayley whispered before her eyes were narrowed. "Where is my daughter?" Caroline took a step back as Hayley's eyes flashed amber but it was nothing compared to Klaus' roar of, "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER CAROLINE?"

"Nobody knows," Caroline answered nervously. "I've checked the entire school and the grounds. She's not here."

"So apparently Elena was right about the school's security," they looked to see Jeremy Gilbert walking up towards the furious hybrids and the blonde. "I'll help search the town and I'm here to get my niece." He shrugged. "Elena's in crunch time for her newest novel." He added to the Mikaelsons curious gaze.

"Uncle Jeremy," a petite seven year old girl with long dark hair pulled into a low braided ponytail and bright blue eyes appeared. "I'm so glad you're here as this school sucks." She raised an eyebrow at five year old Lizzie. "Oh please Lizzie. Your mom sucks as a parent as she hasn't taught you basic manners and do you seriously think your special?" She got in the five year old's face. "You are not. Just because Bonnie Bennett-the worst teacher to ever exist-favors you means crap. Go on and throw a temper tantrum." She narrowed her eyes. "You're unlikable and prefer to have Josie to yourself and it's not like she's a good kid." The seven year old smirked. "Co dependency is a bad thing as well as her enabling you to be the way you are." She took a step as Lizzie had tears in her eyes. "Crocodile tears. How original." Jeremy had to chuckle.

"What has Bonnie been teaching you Lyra?" Jeremy asked her.

"Witches are paragons of all good things, everything else is evil and pariahs," Lyra Gilbert intoned. "I think it's mean-my mother was a Heretic and my father was a Heretic. Does that make me evil?"

"You just bullied a five year old," Caroline snapped at the seven year old. "That's evil."

"Like you not even properly looking for Hope?" Lyra countered. "You looked in a few classrooms and sent no one outside to even check." She raised an eyebrow at Caroline's horrified face. "You also slept with mom's boyfriend a few months back and bribed her into having me come here…where I'm ridiculed for being a Siphoner." Jeremy glared at Caroline.

"You promised Elena that this was a zero tolerance school that dealt with the bullying and it's not," he snarled. "After I help the Mikaelsons find their missing family member I'm going to make sure that my sister knows this and Bonnie," he turned his glare onto the witch who was shivering. "The only reason you have this crappy job is because no witch coven will take you in because of your track record with magic. You used Expression and the only reason you got your magic back was because Sheila went to bat for you against the council…and being forced to find peace."

Holding Lyra's arm, he turned to the Mikaelsons who smiled.

"It's been a long time," he said as he shook Klaus' hand. "Elena and I heard that you have a daughter. Sorry she's gone missing." He really was as he didn't want to imagine Lyra disappearing.

Klaus nodded, a bit of a smile on his face but he was filled with worry and anger. Finn had gone over to Klaus and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We'll find her," Finn promised and Lyra giggled. "What is so funny?" She pointed to Bonnie.

"That rotten teacher can still do locator spells yet has refused so I…stole her magic," her fingers wiggled in the air and Bonnie gulped. "I can try to do a locator spell but it might make me go unconscious and the last time that happened I hit my face on the tile floor in the girl's room." She winced at her uncle's horrified face. "Lizzie stole a few of my things as well as Hope's so we decided to do a locator spell in our shared bathroom where I hit my face on the sink and the nurse grew worried but that was it. Caroline and Bonnie didn't seem to care if a student who was a Siphoner like me had a head injury."

Elijah went over and gently tilted her head up before turning it to the right where he noticed a couple of cuts on her face. Jeremy looked and then turned to Caroline.

"If Elena were here you would be dead," he warned. "I'm close to killing you myself right now." He turned to Lyra. "Where were the things-what were they actually?"

"Our sketch books," she said as Elijah was still examining her head. "Are you a doctor?" She asked Elijah who let her face go gently.

"I had been in the medical field in the mid to late nineties," he explained. "I decided to brush up on my knowledge of the stuff once Hope was born." Lyra smirked.

"Why don't you work here? You seem all…not biased against everything not whatever species you are," she told him. "I would actually have fun learning! I'm just growing bored." She looked at Jeremy. "Is it alright if I did a locator spell?"

"After what you just said no," Jeremy told her sternly. "Elijah? Should she do magic?"

Elijah sighed.

"I have to agree with your uncle," he told her at her quivering lip. "I don't want you to overexert yourself with magic." He picked her up and began to tickle her sides, causing her to laugh happily. "This won't overexert your magic but it is fun." He had remembered doing something like this to Elena and Hope before his very long nap and he wished that this moment could last.

He had to content himself as the woman was possibly married.

"Davina could you do a locator spell?" Kol asked her and Davina nodded.

"I need something of hers," she said and as Hayley flashed to her daughter's shared room she came back with a sigh. "She took everything?" A nod. "Damn she really doesn't want to be found."

"I'll help search the grounds," Jeremy said as he looked at Hayley. "I don't know how far your daughter could go but I'll do my best before I have to leave." He looked at his niece. "I'm going to have to take her home and explain everything to her mother which won't be fun." He shivered, as his sister's anger was legendary.

"I'll stay with her," she said and as Elijah placed the girl on her feet, he smiled. "She's a bit of a spitfire."

"She was raised to be polite but if someone ticks her off and the third time she tells them to stop she's allowed to lash out verbally," Jeremy told her. "For her to wait until the last day of school for her to lash out is very surprising. She has more patience then her mother and I put together."

Elijah nodded, as did Klaus, as both knew that the brunette in question would definitely bite their heads off if something didn't happen when it should or they ticked her off good.

"I'll go with Mister Gilbert," Elijah said and as the two went into the wooded area, Elijah asked him, "how is your sister?"

"Good," he said. "Sure she's a single mom but she's happy and thriving." Elijah stopped and looked at him.

"The father?" He asked and Jeremy realized the look on Elijah's face.

"Elena adopted Lyra when she was born," he explained and his eyes widened. "Elena had been friends with the two Heretics in question before they died thanks to Damon so Elena's bee raising Lyra. Elena has tried dating but the last boyfriend Caroline was caught sleeping with so…Elena left him during a dinner where his entire family could hear this."

Elijah chuckled, knowing that Elena would humiliate the man.

"If it makes you feel better I called him out on it too," he said. "Now let's get to searching."

Hope felt someone shaking her awake and saw the bus driver. Standing up, she stretched and paid him before leaving, finding herself in New York, her cheeks blotched red as well as her eyes.

Her dreams were filled with monsters of people who wanted to kill her and said hateful things to her. Shaking her head of the thoughts she began to walk into a café when someone bumped into her to the point that she fell.

"Watch where you're walking kid," the man snarled only to fall forward with a snapped neck as a beautiful brunette was there, a Daylight ring on her finger.

"He's a vampire and I'm sure that he's going to wake up soon," the brunette said smiling at her. "Care to tell me what you're doing here?" She asked and Hope shook her head, unable to speak. "That's fine. How about I buy you something sweet? A scone perhaps?" Hope's stomach rumbled and she looked down. "I'm Elena Gilbert." Hope looked surprised. "You know Lyra?"

"She's my friend," Hope whispered softly. "She's my friend."

Elena Gilbert smiled at the reddish brown haired seven year old girl. Sure she had no lover or anyone interested in her but the female wolf vampire hybrid didn't care as she was happy with her brother and daughter.

Taking the girl's arm in her delicate hand, she led her into the café where Elena enjoyed working at from time to time. Going up to the barista she smiled.

"I'll take a peppermint mocha frappe and a vanilla bean scone while my friend with me would like," Elena said as she looked at Hope who nibbled her lip. "Would you like anything?"

"Lemonade and a vanilla bean scone," Hope whispered to her shyly. "Please." Elena smiled and as she turned to the barista she repeated the order.

"Why don't we get a seat after our treats and we can talk?" She suggested. "Or we can talk at my house."

"Can we talk at your house?" She whispered softly and Elena nodded. Grabbing the bag holding their scones, Elena wasn't letting go of the girl's arm, as she didn't know why she was there and she didn't want her to get lost.

"Of course honey."

The moment Hope and Elena entered Elena's house a dark haired rocket hugged the two of them, holding them close to dear life. Elena smiled and ran a hand over her little angel's hair while she eyed her brother who looked a bit nervous but slightly angry.

"I think we need to talk while Hope and Lyra talk," her brother said gently. "Don't worry-it's fine."

Elena nodded and as she walked with her brother to a different room, he paced back and forth.

"Jeremy?" She asked and he sighed.

"The school isn't a zero tolerance one as bullying was running rampant thanks to Lizzie while Bonnie was saying that witches were the greatest thing to ever exist," he whispered and Elena's eyes were narrowed. "Lyra bitched Lizzie out and threw some home truths to Caroline and Bonnie."

Elena nodded and looked at him.

"There's something else that you're worried about telling me," she mused. "Just come out with it."

"Lizzie stole that sketchbook I gave Lyra to the point that Lyra did magic and banged her head into the shared bathroom sink," he was wincing as Elena was looking furious. "The nurse and Hope were more worried about her and then Elijah who was eyeing her wound."

Elena felt her voice get caught in her throat as the name of the Original in a suit who was the cause of half of her fantasies.

"He was there when you went to get her?" She asked and he nodded. "Did he look good?" He smirked and shrugged.

"He's really not my type but he looked okay," he said nonchalantly and Elena glowered. "He looked good."

Elena smiled with a breath of air escaping her lips but she was still furious.

"Is there anyone or anything from not allowing me to kill Caroline or even Bonnie?" Elena asked him.

"For starters your daughter," he reminded her. "I don't think she'd appreciate that you're in jail and Elijah wouldn't want to bust you out."

"He can get me off for saying 'self-defense'," she said with a wave of her hand and then glared at him for her words. "Not like that you perv." She ended up swatting his arm with a glower.

"Fine but yes he can get you out of jail easily," he told her with a shrug and a smirk on his face. "He looks like a lawyer."

As the adults were talking, Lyra was hugging Hope happily.

"Oh god Hope," she said happily. "When you went and disappeared-taking everything with you!-I was worried like your family."

Hope winced and felt the guilt eat at her.

"I just…she and the others were just…" she began when Lyra shook her head.

"I basically chewed them out and made a five year old feel horrid about herself," Lyra told her. "Yeah I made her feel bad about herself and Lizzie deserved it." An entire school year of being ridiculed, belittled and treated like crap by half the student body on top of the teachers-Bonnie Bennett especially-the two felt as though they had no one there to help them out.

"I should call mom," she whispered as she smiled sadly at Lyra. "She must be worried about me."

Hayley was distressed as the hybrid was sitting on her daughter's bed, holding one of the girl's favorite stuffed animals, tears in her eyes. She looked up at Klaus who just entered the room; fear swirled around in him while his eyes showed anger.

"Elijah doesn't trust anyone from Mystic Falls to do a good locator spell," he whispered. "So Davina's going to do it with Freya." At the mention of the eldest Mikaelson sister she nodded and made a motion for him to take anything from their daughter's room.

"Bring her home please," she whispered as she cried. "Please."

Elijah was at his wits end as he paced, wondering where Hope could be.

Did she take what Bonnie said seriously? That he and his siblings were just filled with hate and spite, who didn't care about anyone or anything?

He never wanted to rip into a witch more than her-even when Celeste was full on revenge mode he didn't want to kill her. He had shed a tear for her death that he caused but yet when it came to Bonnie Bennett he wanted to rip her apart and burn her alive.

He and his siblings cared. Kol had loved Davina that he was willing to die in her place, Klaus nearly died for Hayley and Hope, Finn was ready to lay his life for Freya and Rebekah took a stake in the heart for Marcel.

He already knew what he would do-he would die for his family, for Elena and for Lyra who he just met.

He never stopped loving Elena and even after her transition into a vampire werewolf hybrid.

Licking his lips, he waited until Freya and Davina came over to him, eyes glinting.

"We have a location but it…" Davina began only for Freya to finish.

"…it only shows what state she's in. She's in New York."

The moment Finn appeared in New York with Elijah they began to search when they found a cute two story house that Elena's scent was coming from. Following it, they went to the front door where they could hear voices.

"…damn it Bonnie the only reason why Caroline even hired you is because no other coven will allow you to join," they could hear Elena's scream. "Literally you are blacklisted from every coven in the world!"

That was news to them.

"…mom I'm sorry I ran but…" they could hear Hope's voice and it was heartbreaking. "I'm so sorry." The young girl cried.

That was enough and as Elijah knocked on the door, they waited until the doorknob opened to reveal Elena's face.

"Hello Lovely," Elijah said with a smile as he heard her heart rate slowly sped up. "May we come in?" He motioned for himself and Finn.

"Please come in," she said as she stepped aside for them. "I'm sure that you'll like it here."
