I am surprised, or maybe shouldn't be, at people seeing Gail and a "reformed" Lucas together. Can't see it for my part. For one, Lucas may not be Satan as Shaun Cassidy and Ed Eick (not sure of his first name!) said in the commentary. Lucas gives us a hint, "One in every generation", which means it may be a Buck family legacy (hopefully voluntary)

Honestly, I don't see Lucas becoming a reformed, moral, uxorious (and faithful) man. The guy does not have it in him. I don't see him as actually being Satan, but he may have sold his soul (and we are never given a glance at his childhood, or his family) to him in exchange for his powers and his position to essentially "run" Trinity. And exercise his powers he does.

Gail isn't that interesting, as a matter of fact, she barely has a personality. I don't see any chemistry there. Sure, he comes onto her early but he comes onto anything that's female and attractive. And he has them if there's an opportunity. He and Selena are obviously lovers of long standing, and she was a good foil for him in that she's lacking a moral compass. Serena may not be likable (and she's not IMHO) but she's interesting at least. Gail's not, she's more like something they wrote in because they had to have someone.

Maybe if there had been a build up to the relationship between Gail and Lucas it might have made sense, but it seemed to just happen. There's nothing to go on to lead into it and let us know how it's happening. As it stands, I can see Lucas using her as a means to bear a "spare" to his heir, because it's clear he's not going to have complete control over Caleb, especially if Merlyn is around to make sure it doesn't happen.

I think that after Gail had his kid, if she didn't die in childbirth, she would have died shortly afterwards. I don't think Lucas saw her as anything more than a vessel, certainly love was not in the picture.

So, what could have happened? Gail has a miscarriage, thus saving her life. Lucas tires of her, face it, he needs someone who has the same evil streak he does. Caleb grows up and discovers that the powers he inherited from Lucas become a source of strength, not evil, and he either kills Lucas, or manages to banish him from Trinity, or hopefully from the world.

Selena meets a tall, dark, handsome stranger who is very rich and whisks her away from Trinity and Lucas and lives happily ever after.

The end.

BTW, I am working on another chapter and will hopefully get it posted in a few days!
