Chapter 1-What it takes to survive
Shane's P.O.V
Shane holds his gun on Rick, who stares at him. "Now, Shane. We can put this all behind us. Forget this ever happened. We can go back to the farm. To Lori, Carl. All you have to do is lower your gun," Rick says. Shane stares at him for a moment. "This isn't you," Shane stares at him and slowly starts to lower his gun. Rick moves closer to him. "Just give me the gun," Rick grabs Shane's gun and Shane lets it go. Rick brings a knife forward. Shane moves as the knife goes into his side. Shane hits Rick, who pulls the knife out. Rick swings at him again. Shane grabs the knife and kicks Rick in the leg. He grabs Rick's knife and stabs it into his shoulder. He punches Rick in the face. Rick stands back up.
"You said we could go back! What happened, Rick!?" Shane yells.
"I'm sorry. This will just happen again. You can't live, Shane," Rick says as he pulls his knife out.
"Then fight me like a man," Shane says. He pulls his knife out. "No guns," Rick takes his python out. "Show me you're a man, Rick! Show me you have what it takes to protect Lori, Carl, and my baby!" Rick throws his gun to the ground and holds the knife. "There you go," Rick swings at Shane, who ducks. He grunts in pain. He swings his knife at Rick. He cuts Rick's leg, and Rick swings his knife back and cuts Shane's eye. Shane backs up as Rick swings at him again. Shane moves to the side and grabs his arm with his other hand, and stabs Rick in the neck. Rick stares at him in shock as Shane lets the knife go. Rick falls back, and Shane sits by him. "Damn you, Rick! We were almost there! Damn you!" Shane yells at his best friend as he dies. Rick stops breathing as Shane cries. Shane holds his eye, which he couldn't see out of, and sits. He sits there for a little while and holds Rick's gun.
"Shane," Carl says. Shane looks at Carl.
"Carl? What are you doing out here? You should be back at the house with your Mom," Shane says as he stands up. He starts to walk towards him. Carl looks at Rick's body and raises his gun as Rick starts to turn. "Carl. It isn't what it looks like," Shane says as Rick stands up as a walker. He starts to move towards Shane. "Carl. I'm sorry," Shane says. Carl shoots his gun, and Shane flinches. He looks at Carl and turns around to see Rick on the ground again. Shane looks at Carl.
"What happened?" Carl asks.
"Carl. We need to get back," Shane says. "Now,"
"What about, Dad? We can't leave him," Carl says with tears in his eyes.
"We'll come back," Shane tells Carl, who nods as they start to walk through the field. Carl looks at Shane after a few minutes.
"Did Dad get bit?" Carl asks Shane, who looks at him.
"Carl," Shane says as he bends down. They hear groans and turn to see a herd of walkers. "Carl! Go," Shane says to Carl, who nods as they run through the woods. Carl and Shane get to the barn, and Shane shuts the door and locks it. "Carl get to the ladder," Carl nods as he goes up the ladder. Shane grabs his lighter and hands it to Carl. He steps down and grabs the gas from the barn, and starts to pour it on the ground. After he finishes, he throws the gas can on the ground.
"What do I do?" Carl asks.
"Carl, I am going to open the door and when I tell you to. You drop that lighter and light these sons of bitches on fire," Shane tells Carl, who nods. Shane goes to the door and starts to hit the door. He pulls the wood off and throws it. He pulls the door open and starts to back up as the walkers follow him. "Carl now!" Shane yells as he climbs on the ladder. Carl drops the lighter, and the barn starts to burn. Shane and Carl go to the side and see the R.V. "Right here!" Shane yells as he points in front of them. Jimmy pulls the R.V and front of them, and Shane makes sure Carl is on the other side before he jumps over. He goes down the ladder and grunts in pain. He looks at his side where Rick had got him. Shane shoots walkers, trying to grab Carl. He helps Carl down as he hears Jimmy scream and sees blood fly onto the window of the R.V. "Come on," Shane says as he leads Carl into the woods. Shane and Carl go through the woods and see Hershel shooting walkers. Shane pulls out Rick's python as a walker goes up behind Hershel. He goes behind the walker and shoots it in the head. Hershel looks at him.
"Lori, and everybody, did you see them?" Shane asks him.
"No, they just keep coming," Hershel tells him.
"We gotta go. We got to find the others," Shane says.
"But this is my farm," Hershel says as Shane grabs his shirt and pulls him towards a car.
"Not anymore," Shane tells Hershel as he climbs into the car. Hershel climbs in the driver's seat as Shane gets in the passenger seat and Carl gets in the back. Hershel starts the car, and they drive off the farm. They drive in silence, and Shane looks at Carl, who had fallen asleep in the back.
"He's tired. Tonight has been bad," Hershel says as he looks at Shane, who was holding a rag against his eye. "Where's Rick?"
"He's dead," Shane tells him as he pulls out Rick's revolver.
"Walkers didn't give you those wounds," Hershel says.
"You're right. They didn't. I killed Randall, and I led Rick into a field to kill him. I was giving him my gun, and he tried to stab me, and I moved. We had a knife fight, and the better man won. That's what happened. I had what it takes to survive," Shane says. He sets Rick's python on the console. "Kill me if you want to," Hershel looks at the gun and then back at the road.
The highway
Shane, Hershel, and Carl got out of the car. "You said they would be here," Carl says. "Where's Mom?"
"She'll be here?" Shane says. "Carl, about Rick," Carl looks at Shane for a moment before he starts to cry. Carl hugs Shane, who hugs him back. Shane holds Carl as he cries onto his shoulder. Shane lets tears go down his face as he thinks about what he did. Shane held Carl until the boy fell asleep from crying. Shane picks him up and sets him in the back of the car as Hershel grabs a bag of the car.
"Sit down," Hershel tells Shane, who sits. Hershel starts to tend to his wounds.
"Why haven't you killed me?" Shane asks him. Hershel looks at him.
"What's the point? Killing you won't bring Rick back," Hershel says as he wraps Shane's eye. "You won't be able to see out of that eye,"
"At least I'm alive," Shane says as they hear a walker. Shane stands up and pulls out his knife. He walks up to the walker and stabs it in the head. He lets it drop to the ground and hears a bike. Shane looks at the road and sees Daryl's bike. Carl climbs out of the car as the cars park. Lori gets out of the car.
"Oh, thank you," Lori says as she runs up to her son and hugs him.
"Where'd you find everybody?" Shane asks Daryl, who looks at him.
"Well, those guys zigzagging all over the road. Figured it had to be an Asian driving," Daryl says.
"Good one," Glenn says.
"Where are the rest of us?" T-dog asks.
"We are the rest of us," Shane says.
"Rick?" Lori asks.
"Andrea?" Glenn asks.
"She saved me, then we lost her," Carol says.
"Rick?" Lori asks as she looks at Shane.
"You killed him?" Daryl asks Shane, who looks at him. "You didn't get stabbed in the eye and the side by a walker,"
"Yeah, I killed him," Shane says. "I killed Randall, I killed Otis, and I killed Rick. I led him out there to kill him, and when I tried to give him my gun, he tried to stab me. We had a knife fight, and he's dead, and I'm not," Shane says. He walks to the car as the group looks at him. He grabs Rick's python and throws it on the ground. He pulls his knife and gun out and throws them on the ground. "Kill me if you want," Lori walks up to Shane with tears in her eyes and punches him in the face. She hits him again and then pushes him back as Maggie grabs her. Shane spits blood on the ground. He looks at Lori as she hugs Carl, who starts to cry again.
"What do we do?" Glenn asks. "Do we kill him?"
"No," Daryl says. "He gets to live with it,"
"Yeah, I do," Shane says. "I know you would all rather Rick was standing here, but that didn't happen. So you can all keep looking at me like I'm the devil, or we can keep going,"
"What about Patricia and Jimmy?" Hershel asks.
"Walkers took Patricia from my arms," Beth says.
"Jimmy was in the R.V. He's dead," Shane says. "You definitely saw Andrea?"
"There were walkers everywhere," Beth says as Lori holds Carl.
"I'm going back," Daryl says.
"Yeah," Shane says. "You aren't going alone. Are you guys going to listen to me?"
"What's your plan?" Glenn asks him.
"If Andrea is alive. She's in the woods," Shane says. "But we also left a lot of supplies in that house,"
"And if we go back, the walkers will tear us apart," Glenn says.
"Maybe not," Daryl says. "A lot of them might have moved on by now. If nothing is keepin' 'em there,"
"Daryl, T-dog, and I will track down Andrea. Glenn, take Maggie and go back and look around. Hershel, you stay here with Beth, Carol, Lori, and Carl," Shane says.
"It isn't the worst plan," Daryl says.
"Fine," Glenn says. "We'll take that car," Glenn says as he points to the car Shane came in.
"Okay, we'll head out," Shane says. Shane goes towards the woods as Glenn climbs into the car with Maggie, and they leave. T-dog and Daryl walk behind Shane.
"Are we trusting him?" T-dog asks.
"We'll find out," Daryl says as they follow Shane into the woods.
Thanks for reading. This is my story on something I have thought about for a long time. How would the walking dead change if Shane killed Rick that night? This story will most likely cross over with fear the walking dead at some point.
