The second time Joichiro's world came crashing down was his wife's death.

It all happened so fast. One minute he is watching Tamako teach their six-year-old daughter how to make fried rice in the diner's kitchen, and then the next, he's rushing Tamako to the hospital. The doctor diagnosed his wife's condition: a congenital heart valve defect. If there had been any early signs, treatment would have been possible. But now...it was too late.

Tamako died from complications a month later, leaving Joichiro barely enough time to say good-bye to the person who had reignited his passion for cooking after he'd walked through the wasteland.

One week passed, then another. The world around him slowly grew darker with each passing moment -

"Hey, Pops. Let's have a cooking match." said Soma, tying an apron around her tiny waist with glowing golden orbs as she stared down at him. He'd lost track of time. How long had he been sitting in front of Tamako's memorial shrine? And when did his twelve-year-old daughter suddenly decide to challenge him to a contest with such a determined look in her eyes?

He didn't know if it was because on that day he had been reminded he's now all that Soma has in this world right now, or he could still see a fragment of Tamako lingering in his child, their child.

Either way, Joichiro had been saved again from perpetual darkness and plunged headfirst into a long tradition of challenging Soma to cooking contests to see who could make the best dish in the diner. When he sent her to Totsuki and went globetrotting to hone his skills, he had 489 wins without a single loss. His daughter had also turned fifteen, blossoming into a young lady who looked and acted more like her mother than he'd thought was possible. Including being oblivious to romance.

Just because he'd be doing his own thing, that didn't mean Joichiro wouldn't make a detour to his alma mater and check on Soma. He'd taught his daughter a lesson or two about how to handle guys, but he'll be damned if she'd be dating someone with skills that weren't on par with Totsuki's Asura in a cooking match.

And there we have it, an appetizer of fried rice featuring the bond between a daughter and her slightly overprotective father :) What main courses should be written, and whom should Soma be paired with? Please feel free to send any ideas. Feedback is essential for an author's growth!
