The story begins on the floating island of Skyloft, where Link, the protagonist, is preparing for the annual Wing Ceremony, an important part of the initiation of new knights of Skyloft. After the ceremony, Link's friend Zelda falls to the Surface during a sudden and unusual storm. So Link ventures to the surface.

The boy ran. He ran and ran until his legs gave out underneath him and he tumbled onto the hard ground below. All he could do was stare at the dark canopy of leaves above him. Looming shadows ran across walls, tangled vines crawled up broken stone structures, and Link layed on the ground, panting. There was no escape from this torturous hell.

In a thousand lifetimes, these two have always been foes. The hands they were dealt by fate this time, however, has them forge a different bond. One of comrades, fighting for the same cause. But are they each as devoted to the cause as they claim?
