Prologue
Nejire Hado, 4 years old:
"Mommy? Daddy?" A little girl hesitantly called out. Her eyes wandered around the area around the forest. She had been with her parents only moments before until she saw a beautiful owl and chased after it. Now she was deep in the forest with trees surrounding her and no idea how to get back.
With long blue hair and eyes matching it, the girl looked around at the area. Despite all the trees in the area, there was a small pond in front of her. Sitting at the pond was a man who had his back turned to her. He was absently dragging a stick through the water back and forth. The man seemed quite tired and wasn't paying attention to her.
"E-Excuse me?" Her parents had told her to never talk to strangers and she hoped they wouldn't get mad at her for asking for help. Nejire had no other ideas on what to do at the moment, however.
The stick in the man's hand paused its movement. Slowly the head of the man turned towards her and she instinctively took a step back. There was something about the man's eyes that threw her off. They looked to be miniature waves that slowly went back and forth. In fact, there was something comforting about them. "Your eyes are so pretty mister."
It wasn't until the man threw his head back and laughed that she was able to get a better look at him. Her eyes tore away from his and she looked up at his hair. The hair was pitch black and reminded her of the night, the weird thing was a single gray line going down the side of his hair.
After a few moments, the man stopped laughing and looked back at her. "Well thank you, young lady. I must say you are quite a beautiful young lady as well."
Nejire Hado stared at the man for a few moments, unknown what to say. She had never talked to another adult without her parents before. She had only talked to other kids her age. "U-Um, Mister?"
The man smiled at her and held his hand out. "My name is Percy Jackson, but you can call me Percy. What is yours miss?"
Nejire stared at the hand in front of her and her eyes flickered back up to the man. There was something so comforting about the man that made Nejire want to trust him despite what her parents said. She took a step forward. her hand reached forward and carefully took his hand. Grabbing onto it, she took notice of the rough and muscular grip he had. It didn't hurt and felt very protective. "I-It's Nejire Hado Mister Percy!"
A quirk of his lips showed amusement. Instead of commenting the man quietly lead her hand to rock. "It's quite interesting that you were able to come here Nejire. I haven't had anyone visit me in quite a long time. How did you get here?" Curiosity was in the man's eyes as he watched her movements.
Nejire withdrew her hand from him and nervously clapped the tips of her shoes together as she stared at the pond. The pond was a beautiful baby blue color and she had never seen water this clear before. "Well I was walking with Mommy and Daddy through the park and I saw a beautiful white owl. I decided to chase it since I had never seen one and I ended up here. Did you see the owl to Mister Percy?" She asked him, her eyes landing back on him.
Mister Percy tapped his chin for a moment. He looked slightly amused but there was a sad smile on his face. Why was there a sad smile on Mister Percy's face? "So I guess even now Wise Girl looks after me, huh?"
"Wise Girl?" Nejire asked and tilted her head at him. Was there a wise girl out there somewhere?
"Ah, it's nothing." Mister Percy smiled down at her. "Just an old friend I guess you could say. No, I did not see the white owl. Did you see where the white owl went Nejire?"
Her eyes went into a downcasted expression. "No Mister Percy, I lost it and then I saw you. I'm sorry."
A hand landed on top of her head and patted it lightly. "It's all good kiddo. I get carried away when I do stuff as well."
Nejire's mood did a sudden switch as she remembered something. "My parents! Can you help me find them, Mister Percy?"
"Sure."
Nejire's eyes lit up in happiness. "Thank you so much, Mister Percy!"
With a light chuckle, Mister Percy brought his hands to his lips and let out a whistle. There was nothing but silence afterward and Mister Percy looked to be waiting for something. After a minute Nejire frowned and looked up at him. "Mister Percy?"
The man just winked down at her. "It takes her a bit to get here, just wait a moment." Nejire furrowed her brows, she had no idea what he meant by that but she would wait with him.
There was a comfortable silence as they both waited for a few minutes. Nejire kept looking all around and looked for any sign of the girl he was talking about. Then after a while, a huge black dog came out of the shadows. The dog had scarlet red eyes and vicious teeth. Immediately Nejire ran behind Mister Percy and hugged onto his leg. She had never seen a monster that was so big before and so terrifying. Could Mister Percy protect her?
"Girl, be nice." Nejire peaked up at Mister Percy. Was this the girl he had been talking about before?
Mister Percy got down to one knee and lightly pulled Nejire away from behind him. "Nejire I would like you to meet Mrs. O'Leary, my puppy."
"Are you sure that's a puppy, Mister Percy? It's quite big!" She told him, her eyes went back to the big huge monster to see a small black dog with purple eyes. The dog was much bigger than her parent's friend's dog but at least now it looked friendly. Had she imagined it?
Mister Percy let out a light laugh and beckoned the puppy towards them. The puppy went next to both of them and Nejire instinctively squeezed Mister Percy's back in a tight hug. "Don't worry Nejire, she won't hurt you." Grabbing onto her hand, Mister Percy led her hand towards and put it on Mrs. O'Leary's head.
Her hand reached up to the dog's head and touched the top of it. The dog let its head go down so she could pet it and as it reached it she felt the soft fir underneath it. "So soft." She quietly mumbled and continued to lightly pet the puppy.
After a while, she gently withdrew her hand. As she was withdrawing it Mrs. O'Leary licked her hand and she could feel the wetness of it. She began to giggle and pet the puppy more. Once she was done, she looked up at Mister Percy. "Mister Percy? What is your puppy doing here?"
"She's going to take you back to your family." Without warning the man put her onto the puppy's back. "Now you are going to hold on really tightly right on her collar and remember, don't let go."
"Don't let go, got it." She murmured and stared at the man for a moment. A sudden realization hit her. "You aren't coming with Mister Percy?"
The happy smile that was on Mister Percy's lips turned slightly sad. Getting down to one knee, he knelt beside her. "I can't go unfortunately kiddo. I'm stuck here for the rest of my life."
"Rest of your life?" Nejire did not like the sound of that. "Does that mean I can't see you again Mister Percy?" She felt sudden wetness at the corners of her eyes. Was she crying? She had just met this man and he was so kind and nice to her, why was he stuck here for the rest of his life?"
"Well, I don't know about that. I have an idea!" The sad smile disappeared and Nejire couldn't help but smile in return. Walking away from Nejire, Percy reached into a small backpack and fished out a whistle made of ice. Before he handed her the ice whistle. Surrounding the ice whistle was a small necklace that had various beads on it. "Now this is a special whistle. It will summon Mrs. O'Leary to you and she will come to take you to me. Now if you ever need help and have no one to turn to, take off the necklace."
Nejire looked at the necklace in her hand and the whistle. It was one of the most beautiful things that she had ever seen. A thought occurred to her as she looked at you. "I thought you would get in trouble if you left here though Mister Percy!"
Percy shot her a wink, "You will learn in life that there are exceptions to every rule. Just make sure it is only when you need help and can't help yourself. Alright?"
"Thank you, Mister Percy! I appreciate it!" She gave him a bright smile and got a small one in return.
"Hold onto the collar kiddo." She listened to Mister Percy's words and held on tightly. "Get going Mrs. O'Leary." With that everything around them went into the sudden darkness.
Once she arrived back at her parents. She told them about the interesting man that she had met. Both her parents were worried and didn't want her to go see the man but after a long time of arguing she won against her Mommy and Daddy! The man was all alone and she was so nice to her, it was the least she could do.
Nejire Hado, 8 years old:
It was another time where she was going to visit Percy. She was able to take a break off and she had finished all her homework. She was in the process of finishing her baking. "Mom! Do you think that he would like chocolate chips or raisins?!" She excitedly asked her Mom.
Her Mom rolled her eyes at the scene before her. "I am still confused on why you wanted to put blue dye in the cookie dough. Don't you think it looks a bit weird?" Her Mom's hand touched the blue cookie dough as if waiting for it to explode in their faces.
"Percy likes blue cookies so I am making blue cookies!" She spoke in a triumphant voice.
"Relax Neji." Her father came over and rubbed the top of her head. "Why don't you finish those cookies up while your mom and I go to the store. We have to go furniture shopping."
"Alright!" She chirped in excitement. Her father shook her head in amusement and soon after both of them left.
Once she had finished baking all of the cookies she smiled brightly and walked outside with them in a zip lock baggy. Normally she would have just called Mrs. O'Leary within the living room but last time she had accidentally destroyed everything within the room. As she stepped outside there was a skip to her every movement and she seemed to be practically dancing.
Once she got to her alleyway she brought out her whistle and was ready to blow. As she held it within her hands a roaring sound came from nowhere and she looked to see a giant truck come rushing down.
The last thing she saw was the driver waving and saying something frantically to her before she blacked out.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hado, we have the report of your daughter." At once both of Nejire's parents shot up in a fury. The mom was shaking from being close to a nervous breakdown while the father had a grim look on his face, expecting the worse.
The doctor looked at a loss of words for a moment, "I-I didn't think it was possible. By all means, your daughter should be dead, she shouldn't have survived a truck flying at her with a speed of 50 miles per hour but she's alive. She has suffered minor brain damage."
The father looked ready to roar but kept himself composed. "That truck driver hit our little girl, he better be paying. Now, what do you mean by brain damage?"
The doctor looked a little bit nervous, "Based on what a few of the doctors agreed on, she may have some memory loss. Other than that she might seem a little aloof. That may go away after a while. As I said before it is a miracle she got away with just this."
Nejire's Mom looked miserable. "Do you have any idea h-how she lived?" She was clearly thankful that her daughter made it out alive but she had to know how."
The doctor scratched his head. "We honestly have no idea. There was nothing around the seen but…" The man stopped talking for a moment as he looked through the reports.
"What is it, doctor? Spit it out now." Nejire's father spoke in an impatient tone.
The doctor began with a confused expression. "According to the driver, he saw two angry sea green eyes as he hit the girl. Nothing else, just two green eyes staring down with anger."
