2 years later
It was a peaceful Saturday in the Midoriya household. Izuku worked on the detailing on the blueprints his mother bought him. So far, he had some cool ideas that would be nice to add for the suit he came up with: a pair of gauntlets with versatile uses, a utility belt, rocket shoes, and light rods. This excited the genius and made him want him to share them with his dad, his mom, and Kacchan.
Kacchan.
He had been acting very disrespectful towards him after he had found out that Izuku was Quirkless. He was no longer being a tease and gloating to his former friend, only giving him insults that broke his heart and looks of disgust and hatred that made him feel lesser than. Those words still echoed in the inventor's head even as he works.
"Why the hell would I want to be friends with a worthless piece of shit like you, Deku?!"
"You're a Quirkless piece of trash and that's all you'll be!"
He shook his head and continued working on the blueprints. His father told them that there would be people who will turn their backs on him, some will be people he knew, others he won't, but he didn't expect his childhood friend to be one of them. And he didn't expect it to hurt that much.
Maybe one day, when Izuku would become the first Quirkless hero, perhaps then, they can be friends again. One day.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Inko was making her tea before she went to watch TV in the living room, relaxing on the couch. After a long gruelling week, dealing with patients at the hospital and having to work overtime at least twice, she was glad to be home with her baby boy.
Speaking of whom….
"Mommy, mommy, mommy!", Izuku repeated as he came to his mother, holding his finished blueprints in his hand and with an excited expression on his face.
"What is it, sweetie?", she asked, expressing a smile on her face with how creative her son had been. In response, he held up his finished design for an armored suit. She couldn't help but feel amazed by how detailed it looked: she could see the structure being thorough, all the functions listed, and the weaponry shown.
"W-wow, Izuku.", Inko gaped, impressed by her son's artistic skill and attention to every facet of his would-be suit. "This is very detailed."
Izuku smiled. "I know! Now all I need to do is be able to develop some industrial spring locks and mini-hydraulics, get some aluminum, titanium, and try setting up a propul-!"
"Whoa, whoa, slow down, honey.", Inko interrupted her hyperactive son before he popped a vessel from excitement. "While making a suit of armor sounds super cool, why don't you start small?"
"Start small?", Izuku asked, tilting his head in confusion.
Inko nodded. She pats the couch for him to sit. "Come here so I can show you." The young inventor sat down next to her. The mother puts her tea on the table and points to the shoes of the armored exoskeleton. "You said you wanted to make propulsion on your suit, right?"
Her son hummed yes. "I think it would be better for you to start with making rocket shoes first and from there, continue with parts of the suit.", she explained, hoping to get her point across.
Izuku looked at her and then at his blueprints. He stared at the gauntlets and utility belt, the rocket propulsion on the boots, and the light rods. The gears in his head started to shift before he realized what she was talking about.
"Oh, I see what you mean.", the inventor understood finally. He turned to his matriarch figure, hugging her. "Thank you, mommy." His mom hugged back, smiling at her intelligent little boy as he ran back to his room, blueprints in hand. Even for the smallest things, it was always good to see her son happy as he continued to work on his dream.
As Izuku went back to his room, he grabbed another blank blueprint. He started with designing the first project he had in mind.
A few months later
Izuku was walking home from school, humming to himself as he carried his bookbag and his toolbox. School didn't feel the same after everyone found out about his Quirklessness. The kids started to follow Kacchan and start picking fights with him out of nowhere, the teachers ignored him when he tried telling them what was happening with his peers and even insulted him when they thought he couldn't hear them. He tried to be quiet about it because he remembered what his dad told him about how tedious it would be because of how the world would see him as inferior. But every now and again, he would stand up against his bullies, only to get an explosion in the face and/or a scolding from his teachers.
Just thinking about it made the young Midoriya blood boil. He breathed in and out before remembering a quote he heard from his Jeet Kune Do book: Emotion can be the enemy, if you give into your emotion, you lose yourself. You must be at one with your emotions, because the body always follows the mind.
"I can't allow my emotions to get the better of me.", Izuku said to himself. He started to focus on something that made him happy: the near completion of his first invention. It took a lot of time and effort to find the components, most of which were found at the Takoba Beach, but he was close to completing his invention, even closer with his new toolbox he bought with his allowance. He only needs a rotation piece and it'll be complete.
But where would he find such a thing?
"Ah! Dammit!"
Izuku turned his head to the right to see a laundromat. Inside, he saw a washing machine shaking violently, as suds and water spilled from underneath before the owner, he assumed, grabbed the plug to shut it off. This led to him pulling out the customer's clothes and laying them on the counter.
"Great.", he heard the 65 year old man grumble. "I just bought this piece of crap 3 weeks ago and it breaks." The owner groaned in frustration as he went to the phone to try and call the repair company, who told them they would be there in 3-4 days.
Izuku saw all this happening outside and was contemplating on what to do. He was getting better at understanding mechanics each day and has always wanted to practice on more large scale machinery. But the owner might show bigotry towards him if he found out that he's Quirkless.
After making a hard decision, Izuku walked into the laundromat and cleared his throat.
"Um...excuse me?", Izuku called the owner as he mopped the floor. The old man looked near the front door to see him.
"What do you want, kid? Can't you see that I'm busy?", the owner grumbled as he continued to mop.
Izuku gulped before responding. "I saw your washing machine shaking and filling up with water."
The owner didn't bother to look as he put his mop back in the closet. "Yeah. That's because it's broken."
"Um...is there any way I can help?", Izuku proposed. The owner turned and looked at the young inventor with skepticism. No one would just come in here to help lend a hand...unless there was something they wanted in return.
The owner crossed his arms as he walked toward the young Midoriya before stopping in front of him. "Why would you wanna help me out, kid?"
Izuku looked up at the old owner. "I heard something about the repair crew coming in 3-4 days.
You probably want it done faster, so what if I volunteer to help fix your machine?"
The owner raised an eyebrow. "What's in it for you?"
"I've learned how to repair small scale machinery and I never had to fix anything that's bigger. I would like to use this as an opportunity to practice."
"You do know that this isn't a simple task, right?"
"I know. That's why if you think I would do something wrong, you can stop me anytime and let professionals handle it."
The owner stared at Izuku and he stared back. This didn't seem to be lying, he had a toolbox at hand and had the look of someone who wanted to help. The old man couldn't believe he was doing this but….
"30 minutes.", the owner laid out to the inventor. "That's all you'll be getting. And to make sure that you don't hurt yourself, I will be standing by in case things get out of hand."
The young inventor nodded as he put his bookbag on a chair and rolled up his sleeves.
In the first few minutes, he and the owner managed to pump out the water from the machine so that Izuku could look inside. The owner helped remove the heavy part of the machine as he and Izuku pump out the water in it. Afterwards, the owner helped the young Midoriya remove the heavy stuff so that he can see what needs to be repaired.
Once he analyzed what was going on, he started fixing the pulley and motor belt with flex tape. Making sure it was fixed, he went to the stacking washer-dryer combinations, seeing the connection straps may have loosened which was causing the unit to shake violently. He tightened the straps and used the tape again. Finally, Izuku noticed the clog that was located in the corrugated tube that leads to the pump. He grabbed his pliers to pull out the clog which was dirt and heavy fabric. Seeing nothing else wrong, he helped the owner put it back together.
The owner decided to test the machine. It wasn't fully repaired by professional standards but it seemed less of a danger to the customers. The owner turned the machine before it got worse.
"Mmm. Not bad, kid.", the owner praised, giving the inventor a towel to dry himself off with. The kid managed to do a decent enough job at fixing it.
Izuku finished drying himself off and gave the owner his towel. "Sorry that I couldn't truly fix it."
The owner waved his hand. "Not a problem, kid. You managed to make it tolerable when the repairman gets here." He honestly didn't expect him to fix the machine enough just so it won't cause problems for everyone else. Because of this the owner gave the reluctant kid some money as a reward, 1100.51 yen to be exact.
"I-I can't accept that, sir!", Izuku stutterd in surprise, waving his hands.
The old owner just chuckled. "C'mon, kid. Just take it." The inventor hesitated before putting it in his pocket. "I gotta know kid, why did you really want to help me?"
Izuku looked nervous as he looked at the owner. "W-well a hero is always there to help those in need, right?"
The owner didn't look surprised at his answer but respected the little boy for going through with this, lending a hand for someone else in need. "Better head home, kid. It's getting late."
Izuku looked at some of the old broken parts so he can use them for his first pieces to his first invention.
"Can I take some of these damaged parts?", Izuku asked.
The owner looked at him weirdly. "Uuh, sure. Don't know what you'll use them for."
Izuku bowed his head. "Thank you, sir." He took the pieces and put them in his book bag, waving goodbye as he left the laundromat
The owner just stared at the kid as walked up the street. What a strange boy.
Izuku's day at the school was going normal, albeit by his low standards. He had arrived at school right as the bell rang in order to evade the bullies before class. Bakugou had obviously made some snide comments about his appearance and connected it to his quirklessness.
Then, there were the teachers who didn't seem to bat an eye as the bullies pinched him, knocked down his pen or screeched in his ears. All in all, nothing out of the ordinary had happened yet. Izuku sighed with annoyance as the bell rang for recess. Recess was the absolute worst for him and all the other bullied kids. Even though the teachers didn't care much about them, at least they made sure things didn't get too physical in the middle of the class. But during recess, it was a free pass for the bullies to do whatever they want.
Luckily, Izuku had found a quiet spot beneath the slides where he could hide out as long as he didn't make too much noise. He did have to make an appearance sometime or the other so that the bullies didn't realize that he was avoiding them. Sure they went out of their way to ignore him to show that he's worthless but at the same time, he was their favorite punching bag. Kacchan was smart enough to realize that he was hiding from him and could destroy his hiding spot.
He waited patiently for all the bullies to leave and get their victims before quietly sneaking out and moving to his hiding spot. He felt shameful that he was hiding out while all the others had to face the bullies but he pushed the thought into the back of the mind.
Izuku breathed a sigh of relief as he reached the shadowy cover underneath the slides. He looked to see if anyone had caught him disappearing. Once he was sure that no eyes had followed him, he took out his phone from his pocket.
Izuku liked to use recess to learn martial arts from youtube or from the manual his dad bought him. He was proficient in traditional self-defense already but he wanted to learn more. He remembered how he had found Jeet Kune Do from his manual and had been practicing it for about a week. He still had trouble with some of the basics but his stances were getting better.
Izuku was happily humming along as he took notes of the stances in his analysis book for future reference when he heard loud shouting, "Kacchan!" he exclaimed in his mind, alarmed. He looked at the clock on his phone with bewilderment. Kacchan usually liked to go after him last so he had more than enough time to finish up his lesson. So what was all the commotion about?
He slowly shifted his position and stared with wide eyes. Bakugou was hitting a classmate repeatedly into the dirt. While that was a regular occurrence, what made this case special was that Bakugou was using his quirk. Izuku clenched his fists in anger. Here he was quirkless, fighting to become a hero whereas Kacchan already had a quirk but was using it as a villain. He ran out of his hiding spot angrily and grabbed a rock before flinging it at Bakugou, "What the hell do you think you are doing!?" He demanded.
The other kids stared in shock at Izuku. They were uncomfortable with Bakugou using his quirk on someone else too but they didn't have the guts to stand up to him. But here was Izuku of all people, confronting him.
"HUH! WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY, YOU DAMN DEKU!?" Bakugou demanded angrily.
"You heard what I said!" Izuku replied back haughtily.
"Tch!" Bakugou pushed back his original victim into the dirt. The boy looked to Izuku with shock but quickly scampered off, "I'LL TEACH YOU HOW TO TALK TO YOUR SUPERIOR, YOU QUIRKLESS PEASANT!" He shouted.
"Bakugou… you're going too far-" Someone tried to point out but had an explosion slammed in their face.
"WHAT, YOU ASSHOLES WANT TO DIE TOO?" The students squirmed in fear and shook their heads.
Izuku frowned, he knew a fight was coming and was revising every single fighting lesson in his head as fast as he could but his mind kept turning up blanks in the heat of the situation. He tensed but fell into the stance he had been learning a while back.
He took a deep breath to calm himself down and remembered what he had been learning, "When the distance is wide, the attacking opponent requires some sort of preparation. Therefore, attack him on his preparation of attack. To reach me, you must move to me. Your attack offers me an opportunity to intercept you." He noted.
Sure enough, Bakugou launched at Izuku with his explosions to propel himself at high speeds. Izuku's eyes widened slightly at the speed of attack but as an analyst, he already knew Bakugou was capable of something like that. He ducked beneath the attack and thanks to the momentum, delivered an open palm strike to Bakugou's gut where he knew there was a pressure point. He struck with enough force to knock the wind out of the explosive boy.
Bakugou's momentum shifted and he fell headfirst into the ground with a slam and remained unmoving. Izuku hesitantly turned him over in fear and was glad to see he was still breathing and was just unconscious.
"What on earth!?" Izuku winced as he heard a teacher yell angrily. The teacher rushed to Bakugou with concern and gave Izuku a menacing look. "Explain now!" Izuku whimpered at the teacher's tone and fell quiet.
Fortunately, the boy he saved came to his aid. "Sensei, B-bakugou was trying to use his quirk to hurt me. Izuku came and insulted him and Bakugou tried to hurt him too but Izuku knocked him out."
There were murmurs of agreement, concern, and confusion throughout the group that was gathered.
The rage in the teacher's eyes disappeared at the explanation but his steely tone remained. "Even so Midoriya, you don't knock out your classmates. You should have told a teacher instead of retaliating." The teacher said, glaring at the Quirkless child.
Izuku nearly snorted at that. And what? You guys never do anything. You would just give a warning, Izuku retorted in his mind but didn't dare say it out loud.
The teacher picked up Bakugou's limp body, "Come with me, Midoriya. I'll have to call your mother and the principal will determine what to do."
And Izuku knew what was in store for him just by those words alone. Keeping his head down, he followed his teacher all the way to the principal's office. While on the way, he noticed how a few students and teachers looked at him like he was a repulsive creature that climbed out from the pits of Hell, how they would whisper awful names about him under their breaths or hurl insults his way. It made him grit his teeth, but he knows that that was nothing compared to how his principal will react to this.
There he was, sitting in a chair in the middle of the room with the principal glaring at him behind his desk with the eyes of a judge about to give a criminal his jail sentence.
"Why did you do it, Mr. Midoriya?", the principal demanded.
The young Midoriya steeled himself in front of the principal, looking him in the eye as he answered. "Because Kacchan was harming someone else and he was about to attack me, so I defended myself."
The answer made the principal's head pop a vein. "Do you have any idea what you've done, Mr. Midoriya?" Izuku realized how he said his name, like it made him have a sour taste in his mouth.
"Mr. Kazuma, he-"
The principal slammed his hands on his desk, making Izuku flinch. "Bakugou Katsuki is a hero in the making. He has the Quirk that is perfect for that line of work. And! You! PICK! A! FIGHT WITH HIM?!"
The words made the young inventor flinch even more but he held a defiant look in his eyes.
The principal sighed as he sat back down. "He has more value in the future than you'll ever have in a lifetime. Just be glad I can't expel you and send in the streets where you belong."
Those. Words. Those words made Izuku want to punch the principal in the face for what he just said.
The door opens and Izuku turns to see his mom, the teacher who sent him to the principal's office, Bakugou with minor bandages and Mitsuki and Masaru who look annoyed with the situation.
The principal greeted the parents and told them what happened: how Bakugou would be doing minor roughhousing and how Izuku would jump to conclusions and pick a fight with the explosive boy. Yes, that's exactly what happened, Izuku rolled his eyes at the bullshit that was put in front of everyone.
Mitsuki angrily turned to her son, who was scowling at Izuku the whole time. "What did I tell you about picking fights with other students, boy?"
"Not my fault that they're a bunch of whiny little bitches, you old hag.", the explosive boy responded rather rudely.
Izuku looked at his mother. She just stared at the principal with a blank expression, but Izuku knew she was pissed.
"Is there something wrong, Mrs. Midoriya?", the principal asked, a little uncomfortable with how she hadn't blinked when she stared at him.
"There's something that I don't get in your story, Mr. Kazuma.", Inko answered coldly. "You said the teacher was able to stop Izuku from hurting Katsuki badly, yet the teacher failed to stop him from roughhousing with the other student. Why is that?"
"Mrs. Midoriya, the teacher was there but-
"So the teacher was there to stop my son from 'hurting' Katsuki but didn't do anything about the roughhousing beforehand?"
"Mrs. Midoriya, we have only one teacher during the recess period-"
"There's only one teacher during recess when there are at least 50 students outside? A lot can happen that one teacher may not know about."
"There's only so many teachers that are available during the recess period, Mrs. Midoriya. What do you want from us?", Mr. Kazuma asked, frustratingly. She had him by the balls and he couldn't do anything about it.
"I want you to actually be competent at your jobs.", Inko answered, her cold, venomous viridian eyes boring into the principal's skull. She was getting tired of seeing her son crying home about how the kids pick on him, tired of seeing mysterious burn marks on her baby, and she was tired of this school's staff being indifferent at best and negligent at worst to her boy.
The principal looked terrified and offended as he was about to give a response, only for Inko to shut him up again
"How long is Izuku going to be suspended for?", Inko asked, wanting to get straight to the point.
The principal gulped. "A week."
"And what about Bakugou?", Mitsuki frowned.
"Three days."
With that said the principal gave both families a packet for their sons to do when they were home. Mitsuki and Masaru apologized to Inko on the way out, to which she brushed aside. She knew they were trying. But at some point, enough is going to be enough. Someone has to teach Bakugou Katsuki a lesson, someday.
Honestly, this was a blessing in disguise for Izuku. He didn't have to go to school to deal with those teachers, he didn't have to hide from Kacchan's ugly face during school hours, and he didn't need to have his intelligence insulted when he did assignments.
It was why he was busy locking in the rotation gears into his shoes. This was the biggest hurdle he had to deal with: making sure the gears moved smoothly across the soles.
With a final twist of his screw, he managed to latch it on for both sneakers. Now all he would need to do is set up the activation modules for the pair and he would be set.
Meanwhile, Inko was in the living room, drinking tea. Her hand was shaking in anger as she was thinking about what happened at the school. She couldn't take it. She couldn't take the discrimination happening against her son.
Absent-mindedly, she picked up the phone and called her husband, "Hello?" She heard him speak on the line. Inko gritted her teeth and tried to inform Hisashi of the situation but broke down sobbing almost immediately.
"Hey, hey! What's wrong?" Hisashi asked in distress.
"It's about Izuku." Inko sobbed.
"What, did something happen to him?"
"He got suspended for a week."
"Suspended?" Hisashi asked, confused. "What did he do?"
"Bakugou was hurting another kid with his quirk and Izuku saw it and knocked him out."
Inko waited for a response from Hisashi but was certainly not expecting an enthusiastic one. "That's my son! He taught the bully a lesson. It's fine, babe, there's no need to be sad."
"It's not about that. All the teachers and the principal discriminate against him because he's quirkless. They just keep watching as the bullies hurt people and the moment Izuku fights back in any way, he gets detention or suspension.", Inko replied.
Hisashi was quiet for a while, "Maybe, we should look into other schools?"
Inko laughed cruelly at that, "Hisashi, you know we can't afford to move or change school districts for Izuku. There's nothing to do."
"Maybe if we complain to the school board?"
"Maybe, but will they listen to only one parent?"
Hisashi scowled, "I don't want to see Izuku keep getting broken down. I know this is the reality for the quirkless but still…"
The husband and wife sat in silence, on opposite sides of the phone, unsure of what to do.
Hisashi finally broke the silence, "I'll try and talk to Izuku to just stay out of everyone's way. I understand the reason why he got himself suspended and I support him but it won't look good on his application papers to UA."
"So that's all we're doing, riding everything on whether he gets into UA. And if not, his mental health is broken down for something that never happened."
"Inko, I'm 100% sure, he'll get into UA. If not hero, then support, if not support, then Gen Ed. But I believe he will without a doubt become a hero." Hisashi asserted
Inko smiled sadly, "I hope you're right," she said as she saw Izuku hurry out of his room to grab batteries and an ammeter for his circuit, an innocent smile still present on his face, "The best we can do is to protect that hopeful smile of his."
"Don't worry.", Hisashi assured her. "As long as you recorded the conversations, we can make a strong case."
Inko thought to herself. Hopefully, our son stays strong.
Izuku was excited. Absolutely elated.
His first invention that he worked months on was finally complete.
He woke up early and made himself a bowl of cereal. After he finished eating, he put on his sweatpants and jacket before heading to his mother's room to wake her up.
"Mom. Mom. Mom.", Izuku called out to her, shaking her awake as he could barely contain his excitement.
"Mmm….Oh. Morning, Izuku.", Inko yawned and noticed her little inventor was dressed. "What's going on, sweetie?"
Izuku jumped up and down in excitement as he held her hand. "I finished it, Mom. I finished my first invention." This brought her awake a little bit. Her boy finally finished something.
"Oh, that's great, Izuku.", Inko congratulated her son. "Can I see it?"
Izuku shook his head. "We have to go outside in order for me to demonstrate, Mom."
"Ok. Gimme a few minutes. Mommy needs to eat and get dressed.", Inko promised, getting a nod from her son as he left the room.
Inko was curious about what her son made. She had seen him dedicated to his project for a long time. She brought herself up and got her clothes on before getting her food made.
After all that, the Midoriyas went outside in the back of the apartment. Izuku was humming a happy tune, which bought a smile to Inko's face.
Izuku stopped and turned around to his matriarch figure. "Okay, mom. You said that I should work on individual parts of my armored suit." Inko nodded.
"Well, I figured I could start with the easiest tools first. Specifically, my Rocket Shoes ." Izuku pointed down to his shoes, which looked like his red pair but with a more smooth metallic surface and somewhat bulky.
"Interesting, honey. But are you sure this is safe?", Inko asked, concerned for Izuku's wellbeing.
Izuku put on his helmet. "Don't worry, Mom. You can pull me down if things get out of hand."
"Ok, honey. Please be careful."
Izuku nodded. He got on his tippy-toes and clicked his heels together. Instantly, rocket propulsion was activated on his soles as he slowly started to levitate.
Inko was shocked that her son was able to create something like this.
Izuku would build some speed to fly around his mom like a bee, giggling and laughing before clapping his hands together and the propulsion stopped.
Inko caught her son, so proud of her little inventor's first milestone. "That was amazing, honey!"
"Thanks, mom!", Izuku agreed. It made him happy that his mom acknowledged and appreciated his first breakthrough.
With that amazing presentation, they went back inside to celebrate with a big breakfast to celebrate Izuku's first successful invention. The young Midoriya knew that he had a long way to go.
But, it felt good knowing he did something good for once.
