Enzo frowned as he looked at her and Jacqueline was almost nervous for his answer now. It should have been simple. It should have been instant with no hesitation; yes Jacqueline, you're human.
But it wasn't.
She could tell from the look on his face that he wasn't sure anymore.
"Just say it" She snapped impatiently, "Whatever your thinking... just say it"
Enzo blinked, "When I first met you... I didn't sense anything different about you. Witch's though... sometimes they only come into their magic during their teen years"
"Like puberty?" Jacqueline asked dryly, "Puberty for witches! Ain't that just great?" She muttered.
When she had recalled the conversation with Shelia it had been an off handed comment. A question about dark magic and why a witch would hate it. It should have been a simple conversation, a simple question of no importance.
...but then Enzo froze.
He had looked at her strangely, like he was seeing something he hadn't seen before. And Jacqueline realised maybe Shelia hadn't been all that drunk. Maybe something magical really was happening?
Enzo shrugged, "I haven't met that many witches, Jackie" he reminded her with dry humour. "I've been here since the 60's"
"Sorry" she sighed knowing it wasn't him she was actually mad at... she wasn't mad at anyone to be fair.
Maybe Shelia for starting all this?
Mostly it was because knowing about the supernatural and being a part of it, were two completely different things.
"Witches can't be compelled" Enzo said before he beckoned her closer to the cell he was locked up in. "Let me try. Are you on vervain?"
Jacqueline nodded and slipped off the bracelet of vervain. She was trusting him and it was a risk but she needed to know the truth. This was the easiest way to determine if there even is anything to worry about.
Enzo's eyes darkened, "Put your hands on your head" he compelled
Jacqueline felt a weird thing happen then and a buzzing on her skin. It was almost a comforting feeling against the fear being compelled caused. Blinking, she realised she hadn't moved to comply and her eyes widened before she could stop them.
Enzo pursed his lips, "Are you sure you haven't had any vervain?" He asked quietly
"I'm positive" she answered before thinking really hard about it. Jacqueline knew she hadn't had any vervain because she had been using it for jewellery. She had taken it to a friend who melted it into inconspicuous jewellery. Jacqueline was going to make sure all her piercings had vervain jewellery.
Cause Jacqueline had gotten her nose pierced a few weeks ago. She had also gotten 4 new piercings on each of her ears. It was why she had been wearing the ugly ass bracelet of Miranda's that had vervain in it. Cause she didn't currently have any that she was able to consume.
"Okay" Enzo sighed, "You need to be careful then. If Dr. Gilbert finds out about you... if the rest of Augustine finds out..." he trailed off
Neither of them needed to speak what would happen aloud.
Jacqueline had witnessed Enzo's torture and she knew exactly how brutal it would be. She could only imagine what they would do with a witch...
"Yeah" she nodded letting out a long breath. "Shelia told me I shouldn't be alive - so she's out of the question. But I'm gonna need to get help with this"
Enzo nodded in agreement, "You can't risk an accident and revealing your magic to them" then he lowered his voice to an almost apologetic whisper, "Especially not since your father won't be as caring towards you"
Jacqueline hummed in agreement but didn't say anything. She'd had trust problems for a long time now. That being said, meeting someone with more issues than yourself made it easier to open up. Jacqueline had told Enzo over the three years she'd known about him, all about her life. Of course she hid behind a facade of Indifference as she did so - but it felt good actually telling someone. While he had been locked up for a long time he still managed to come through with some helpful advice. Especially advice on not letting the weight of her responsibilities stop her from being a teenager.
He eased her pain... and she eased his.
For two prideful people they sure did need some extreme emotional support sometimes!
"How do I find a witch?" Jacqueline asked having no idea where to even start.
"You could try finding a magic or herbal shop?" Enzo suggested as unsure as she was about it all.
"Yeah" she nodded, "and if those witches think I shouldn't exist?"
Enzo sighed regretfully, "I don't know. I really don't, Jackie"
Jacqueline smiled, "It's alright. You're too good to me, y'know. Thank you, Enzo" she smiled warmly
Enzo nodded and smiled back, "I hope you figure it out, hun. I don't want to see you end up like me"
"I still don't understand why you won't let me help you, Enzo?" Jacqueline frowned at him. "You could run. Get to other side of the world and then live your life. Some small town scientist wannabes won't chase you that far"
Enzo shrugged and she knew he wouldn't answer so she smiled again before leaving.
They'd spoken about it only a few times, but the more they did, the more she didn't understand why he didn't let her help. Jacqueline thought it was because maybe he didn't realise how big the world is since his time in captivity?
Either way he was very set on her not helping set him free.
Jacqueline parked her car in front of the little herbal shop. It had taken her 57 minutes to drive here and she hoping to find some answers. Staring at the store she saw all the 'magical' trinkets in the window but was still somewhat surprised at how blatant it was. Then again, Jacqueline had never believed in witches before. It wasn't hard to think that most people just thought it was all a joke.
Sighing she climbed out of her car and crossed the road.
Pushing open the door she instantly felt her skin buzz. Almost like an aura was surrounding her and the shop. Jacqueline realised it was a slightly unnerving feeling, but after a second it became more comforting than anything else. A slight smile appeared in her face before she schooled it and approached the register.
There was an older woman, maybe 50 years old, behind the register. The woman's brown hair was pulled into one of those complicated up-do hairstyles that were popular about 50 years ago.
"Hello-" Jacqueline started seeing the older woman already looking at her
"What do you want?" The woman sneered, "I don't mess with your kind here!"
Jacqueline glared and grit her teeth in annoyance. She wasn't fool enough to think this witch-bitch wouldn't hurt her, but she also wanted to punch the granny witch anyway. Clearing her throat she sighed, "I'm looking for answers. I was hoping someone could explain to me what's happenin-"
"No!" The witch scoffed and turned her nose up at Jacqueline. Almost as if the mere suggestion of associating with Jacqueline offended her.
"I don't understand" Jacqueline started again
"You're an abomination!" The witch yelled. "You defy nature's wishes, you defy the balance! It's impossible to control dark magic... it controls you, little girl!"
Jacqueline clenched her teeth and sighed angrily.
What the fuck was she supposed to do now if nobody would help her?
Stalking out of the shop she got in her car and headed back to Mystic Falls. It hadn't been enough that her pride was hurt having to ask for help... but to be denied like that had pissed her the fuck off!
What was she gonna do now?
Jacqueline grunted in anger and tried her best to calm down. She could feel the magic - or whatever the fuck it is - tingling under her skin. While she didn't understand what was happening... Jacqueline knew without a doubt it wanted to surface.
Which raised the question of what would that look like?
...and she was no where near close to having answers.
Deciding not to let her one failure get her down, Jacqueline had done what she discussed with Enzo. And continued to looked up as many magic or herb shops as she could. Now all she had to do was narrow down the list to what was more likely real and what was fake.
There were reviews that helped.
Hints dropped into the websites and such that would point to it being real. A few shops websites spouted off that nature and balance of everything bullshit. So, Jacqueline figured those were real. Though she was more apprehensive in going to one of them again. If she repulsed the nature and balance witches then she'd have to find a different type of witch.
Cause why would a stranger help someone who they're repulsed by?
Jacqueline didn't think they would - not even for a pretty chunk of change.
Her job at the local tattoo shop paid great in both salary and tips. Although she technically could get any ink done, being 16 allowed her to work there without issue. Especially since Jacqueline was great at art and good at freehand tattooing.
As she had told Enzo - Jacqueline had received her custom made jewellery literally made with vervain melted into the metal.
...her new nipple piercings were also made with vervain melted into the metal.
Jacqueline had even added it to the ink for one specific customer who'd come in and slyly asked for their own pre-purchased tattoo ink to be used. She hadn't ever thought about adding vervain into a tattoo before, but it made her want to get Jeremy and Elena a tattoo birthday gift.
Jeremy would jump at the chance.
The 11 year old Gilbert took every chance he got to come with her to the sketchy little tattoo place she works in. Jeremy loved art in general but the whole tattoo process seemed to have caught his attention. Just as it had caught Jacqueline's attention. Then again, Jeremy always had been a lot like Jacqueline...
Elena was repulsed though - won't even step foot in the shop.
Vervain jewellery was more of Elena's thing obviously. While it was less permanent than Jacqueline liked, it was still subtle enough to give Elena the upper hand should the situation arise.
"Raack?" Jacqueline called out as she walked into the shop
"Yeah?" The man in question appeared in front of her from the storage room. "You wanna do your ink, don't you?"
He knew her too well.
Jacqueline smiled, "Yeah" she nodded and settled down in one of the chairs. She had thought about what she would get inked permanently to her skin and decided that she wanted Elena and Jeremys names. Raack nodded and cleaned up the skin on her ribs before he began the lettering. It wasn't going to be too complicated. Just Elena and Jeremy inked in big, bold fancy letting on her ribs...with vervain in the ink and now permanently in her skin.
Momentarily Jacqueline wandered that if she really did end up being something supernatural, if this was pointless?
However, Jacqueline would rather have it and be over prepared, than not prepared at all. It might also help her tell if she was ever in the company of a vampire...cause God knows she wasn't always thinking clearly when falling into bed with someone.
The buzzing sound of the tattoo machine lulled her mind out of the spinning thoughts. The pain was bearable, it felt like a small constant stinging and wasn't as uncomfortable as she assumed it would be. Jacqueline instantly knew she'd be getting more done though.
She became a tattoo artist because she loved creating art and seeing It permanently be one someone for the rest of their lives. Until now she hadn't realised how much she liked being inked herself!
After another hour of cleaning the skin, wrapping it, cleaning the bench and paying. Jacqueline was heading home to show Elena and Jeremy.
They had been setting the table for dinner when Jacqueline had announced that she would be going out for an hour or so. Saying she would be back soon with something to show them both. Though she left before either managed to ask any questions.
...and that had been 2 hours ago.
When Jacqueline walked back through the door she found Jeremy and Elena had waited up watching tv.
"Your back" Elena stated curiously
Jacqueline grinned, "Uh-Huh and look at what I did!" She lifted her shirt excitedly and peeled back the covering to show her new tattoo.
Jeremy was quick to get a closer look at it. "That's awesome!"
Elena frowned, "Why'd you get our names?" Though the question was a lot softer than it probably would have been if the tattoo wasn't their names. Elena still didn't sound all that enthusiastic about it.
"Cause I love you both. You're my family. I'll always be there for you no matter what, all you have to do is ask" Jacqueline told them, momentarily serious. "I'll give up everything if either one of you asked me to. I'd die for you"
After fixing her shirt Jacqueline allowed herself to be pulled into a hug by Jeremy and Elena.
"Now get to bed" Jacqueline mock scolded them
