Link opened his eyes, his breath quick and heavy from the sucking, vibrating feeling he had experienced in his head just a few moments ago. He fell to one knee, catching his fall with a hand as sweat fell from his brow. He waited a moment for his breaths to slow, staring down at the ground he had collapsed upon with his knee and hand freezing, buried in a thick, powdery layer of snow. Pulling his hand from the snowdrift, he shook his now red fingers before looking up and around at his surroundings. Though the sky seemed blue and sunny, snow continuously fell to the ground, resting upon the grassy plains and on the sides of small, jagged mountains that loomed in the area. Link's eyes traveled along with the mountain range before noticing a familiar uneven, rocky pathway that somehow avoided being covered in snowfall. He squinted, trying to see what sat at the end of the pathway in the distance. Just faintly noticeable by its dim lanterns, stood a wooden hut that sat on a bounder sitting just on the edge of a deep void in the mountains, where powerful winds blew upwards into the sky.
The Flight Range? Link asked himself as he began to take a few steps forward, stepping from the deep snowfall onto the rocky path. He continued forward as the hut in the distance became clearer, however, he soon stopped near the edge of the windy cliffs the range sat over. Standing on the rocks stood the familiar Rito Champion. His feathers ruffled in the wind as he peered into the violent winds, watching as each gust spiraled around the rocky pillar that sat towering in the center of the void. Though Revali of the Rito's figure seemed at peace, his eyes were darting around, glancing at each individual target that sat dotted amongst the circular chasm walls. Curious, Link attempted to walk closer, however, he was soon blown back by the powerful gust of winds that came only a second after.
With a leap, Revali was in the air; soaring through the eye of the gale. Link watched as he elegantly soared higher into the sky. Though it seemed he had much control, to Link's surprise Revali's wings had started to shudder. After rocking side to side, the Rito Champion began to circle with the winds; being tossed around before inevitably being thrown from its power. Twisting and twirling with feathers flying in every direction, Revali rocketed back to the ground. Link winced at the sound of the painful thud as the Champion crashed onto the wooden roof of the Flight Range.
After laying on the roof for a moment, Revali stood. With a little leap, and a flap of his wings, he landed back on the rocks he stood on previously. However, the moment he landed he immediately stumbled as pain coursed through his body. Standing still for a moment in order to let the stinging feeling leave his body, Revali gritted his beak before reaching over his shoulder and grabbing the bow on his back. With a powerful swing and a violent yell, he threw the heavy wooden weapon at the rocky mountain wall behind them. It slammed against the wall before landing in the snow piling up in the grass.
"How can I prove myself to be the best if I can't get this power under control!" Revali yelled, clicking his tongue as he began to pace the edge of the chasm. "The chief of the Gerudo, the Protector of the Mountain, the Princess of the Zora… all Champions have chosen to support the Princes of Hyrule. Of course, it'll be I who is tasked with Vah Medoh, the Gifted of the Rito. My understanding was the Champions were the ones tasked to defeat the Calamity; however, now that a lowly little knight was chosen, they have to play second fiddle to him?"
Revali growled to himself as he walked over to where his bow lay in the snow, ignoring the limp he now had from his earlier crash. He stopped just before the resting bow, staring down at it as his feathery eyebrows furrowed.
"The rest of them stand out; people with the power, the skill, and the responsibility to deserve their praise. However, that little knight has nothing to his name but being a naturally gifted fighter, immediately grasping any weapon and using it with ease. He didn't need to properly train a day in his life, and he only gained that old sword by chance," he continued, bending down to take the bow in his feathered hands once more. "For someone who doesn't work a day in his life for what he has; a knight who only relies on his raw talent. He'll never understand what true power is."
Revali turned from the mountain wall he had been facing in order to stare back into the powerful winds of the void. He crouched, allowing the powerful winds of his own creation to engulf his body. With a powerful flap, he was in the air once more. He soared upwards, however, just as before the gust caught him from his flight. After tumbling through the air Revali crashed again, this time through the window of the Flight Range and into its interior. But, just as before, he limped out of the hut before crouching down and attempting again.
Link furrowed his eyebrows and watched each attempt as Revali pushed himself further. For what seemed like hours, he continuously flew into the air only to be knocked back, crashing into mountain walls, the wooden hut, and eventually the rocky edge of the chasm. It wasn't until the sound of hooves began to echo in Link's ears did he turn his attention away from the sight.
Three horses were walking up the gravel pathway. The two in the back were dark horses, with two silver armored men resting in the horse's saddles. The one upfront, however, was much brighter. Its mane was as bright as the snow that fell around it, its purple and gold etched reins sparkling in the sunlight. Its rider shined just as brightly, wearing a pure white fluffy outfit, outlined with the same gold markings. Her golden hair billowed in the winds Revali was creating as she now caught sight of him flying through them once more. However, just as before, he crashed this time face-first into the rocky ground.
"Not enough," Revali said, now gasping for air with exhaustion. "I must stay in the eye of the whirlwind. I must push myself even harder."
He pushed himself up properly in order to try once more, however, just as before he could attempt to control the whirlwind again, the sound of padded footsteps caught his attention. He looked back, seeing Zelda jump down from her horse along with her knights before walking forward towards him. He sneered.
"You know, your highness…" he said as he properly pushed himself up, clearly ignoring the pain. "It's rude to eavesdrop."
Link furrowed his eyes as annoyance filled his chest. He looked over at Zelda, expecting to see the same, however to his surprise she seemed perfectly at ease.
"My apologies. I went to the village and was told I could find you here," she remarked with a gentle smile. Revali glanced back before properly turning around to face her, seemingly ignoring her friendly gesture.
"You have need of me. To defeat Calamity Ganon," he said roughly. He paused for a moment before continuing in a more pompous tone. "To slay the beast once and for all… it will be my great pleasure."
"Thank you, Revali," Zelda said, relief filling her voice at the sound of Revali's quick agreement. "If we work together, I'm certain we'll be able to defeat-"
"However!" Revali suddenly yelled, cutting the princess off. He turned, crouching down to allow the winds to take him into the sky for a final time. Link and Zelda both watched in awe as he finally remained in the eye of the winds, soaring high into the sky. It only took a moment's work. Revali shot downwards, and at the speed of the gales he flew through with his bow and bomb arrows in hand, the targets in the chasm exploded. Many exploded in groups at the same time, though the untrained eye would've thought they all blew up at the same time exactly. From the heaps of smoke, Revali appeared once more from the dark clouds before landing on the borders of the Flight Ranges deck.
"I know that I play the biggest part in helping that," Revali cleared his throat before raising his beak in the air. "That little knight with the darkness-sealing sword. Correct?"
Link frowned, watching as Revali put his feathered hand on his hip with a pretentious smile.
"Well, if he loses his confidence after seeing me in action… don't come crying to me."
While Link continued to frown, Zelda giggled as she brought a gloved hand to her lips.
"Why thank you, Revali. I'll gladly keep that in mind," she said, unknowingly receiving a slight glare from the invisible knight standing beside her. Link always thought those two had a small bond, though he could never understand why until now. "I believe I shall take my leave then. It seems you're a bit busy and I have… things to attend to."
Link noticed the slight drop in Zelda's tone at her last words. However, she didn't elaborate. She simply bowed, before walking back to her horse. It didn't take long for the princess and her two guards to disappear down the gravel pathway. Revali watched with his confident smile remaining on his beak, however, the moment Zelda was out of sight Link noticed his smile fade as he turned to look at the now scorched target remains littered in the chasm. Revali clicked his tongue before allowing the winds to take over once again.
"Not enough…" he muttered under his breath before soaring into the sky once more. Link watched as the Rito soared higher into the sky, however the pounding in his mind had begun to return. He closed his eyes and brought his fingers to the bridge of his nose. Link began to lose his balance, feeling as if he could pass out at any moment as his vision blurred. The ringing in his ears had returned as well. He continued to stumble forward before beginning to fall. However, just before he could hit the ground, he caught himself just as before.
The pounding in Link's mind ceased, the constant strain of his consciousness being sucked away beginning to loosen its grip. He shook his head, trying to make the ringing in his ears disappear. His eyes began to open, however, they were soon met with the powerful winds that circled the area, while the ringing had eventually vanished, it was now replaced with the sounds of gears and heavy winds. Doing his best to keep his eyes open, Link looked downwards to inspect the ground he stood on. Even under his fluffy boots, he could feel the rough texture of the rocky flooring. Though the floor seemed uncomfortable, it was cushioned by the thick moss covering the ground. The moss not only gripped the surface but also climbed the pillars that also seemed scattered around the area. It wasn't until Link's eyes had fully adjusted did he recognize the incredible wingspan of the Divine Beast he had only once been on.
Vah Medoh? Link asked himself, however, before he could ask why he was sent directly to the Divine Beast, the already violent winds had begun to become even more twisted. Link looked off one of the edges of the beast's wings to see a powerful twister of winds shooting up into the sky. He squinted, trying to see through the winds before recognizing the dark feathered Rito soaring through the center of the cyclone. He soared upwards, circling above Vah Medoh's surface before gliding downwards. Just moments from hitting the mossy ground, he pulled back, flapping his powerful wings before his talons landed on the surface.
"This is truly excruciating," Revali said, ruffling his feathers as he placed his hands behind his back. "That lowly knight is the one destined to defeat the Calamity Ganon? A knight, with nothing to his name but pulling that little sword from whatever old forest he found it in?"
Revali clicked his beak as he began to walk forward, the invisible Link now following him.
"He blocks one guardian laser, then pronounced one of the best warriors of our time? It's… nonsensical."
Revali walked to the edge of Vah Medoh's wing, staring down at the village far below where he had left Link after supposing his impossible challenge.
"As if that little knight could make his way up here. Wingless, brainless, and wordless. The only thing that knight has to his name is that dingy old sword of his, that even he claims he can't even hear," he continued, clicking his tongue. "I am a warrior, a Rito one at that, that worked tirelessly to get the powers and skills that I have. For a knight who's done nothing but do the bare minimum; a knight who, just as the rest of those irksome Champions, have nothing but simple talent to their name to be put not on the same, but a higher position than mine… I meant what I said."
Revali observed the mountains of Herba from above on the Divine Beast, apparently lost in thoughts most certainly regarding the unworthiness of the Hylian knight he spoke about in his rant. Link watched as the Rito Champion overlooked his home, frustration building in his feathered features. However, his expression soon changed from that of anger to one of confusion.
"What the…?" he uttered as he squinted his sharp green eyes, now peering downward towards a specific portion of the mountains. Growing curious, Link walked forwards towards the edge of the Divine Beasts wings himself, peering over to where Revali seemed to be looking down. It was easy enough to make out the Flight Range from up in the sky, however, the muffled sounds of explosions and smoke billowing from the range made it much easier to notice. Revali instantly began to prepare, crouching down in order to allow the winds to circle around him again. Link, noticing the Rito's intentions, immediately went to his hip in order to get his paraglider from the Slate, however, his hand only felt the leather of his belts. The Sheikah Slate wasn't with him. Unable to come up with any other plan, Link jumped onto Revali's back just before he took off into the sky.
It was a weird feeling, riding on the back of a Rito as a ghost, Link could feel the winds blowing around him, however, he couldn't feel the feeling of Revali flapping his wings beneath his body. He also could never imagine Revali ever allowing him to properly ride on his back.
With his bow gripped tightly between his talons, and his unknowing rider gripped tightly to his feathery armor, Revali dove at an incredible speed. Link looked back at the bow flying behind them, only assuming that Revali felt as though the Flight Range was under attack. He furrowed his eyebrows as he faced forward, looking down at the smoking range they flew towards. Even with his memory loss, he had never heard anything about the Flight Range being under attack…
The two soared downwards as the range became much easier to make out. However, to Link and Revali's surprise, there wasn't a monster in sight. In fact, the wooden hut of the Flight Range seemed to be in perfect condition, along with the smoke beginning to clear from the area. Confused, Revali circled the range from the air before landing on the top of the hut. Jumping from his back, Link stood on the roof's hut next to the Rito Champion, doing his best not to lose balance on the slope beneath them. They watched, inspecting the area. It didn't take long for Revali to notice two of the targets in the Flight Range's windy chasm had been scorched and broken. Someone had been taking aim in his training grounds! However, before he could guess who it was, the trespasser had made himself known.
With a paraglider in hand, a blue-clad knight rose from the depths of the void. With unimaginable skill, he soared through the winds billowing through the range. Revali and Link watched as the knight, with a white and blue bow on his back, circled the center rocky tower of the chasm before raising higher. Releasing the paraglider from his grip, the knight quickly took the bow from his back as he started to fall. Revali sneered.
"As if he could match-" he began, however, he was soon silenced by the sudden group of deafening booms. The targets in the void had all exploded. Many blew up in groups at the same time, though the untrained eye would've thought they all blew up at the same time exactly; just as Revali had done weeks before. The knight quickly grabbed his paraglider before falling too far into the ravine, riding the winds before landing on the rocky edges with his bow still in hand.
Link, standing next to Revali on the roof, slowly glanced over at him. Revali's face seemed expressionless, however, his eyes were filled with shock, and then anger. Link was blown off the roof from the sudden force of winds that Revali used to take back off into the sky. The Rito soared around before landing directly in front of the blue-clad trespasser.
"I don't remember giving you permission to enter my private training grounds," Revali billowed, causing the blue-clad knight to back up slightly. "If you think you're special just because you can hit targets at that speed, you're wrong. Ha, I could do that in my sleep!"
Winds billowed from beneath Revali, a show of power that the knight said nothing towards. Revali stared down at the knight's blue eyes before turning his back to him.
"Leave. Now," Revali said darkly. The knight nodded before turning and walking back down the rocky pathway. The Rito Champion glanced back before clicking his tongue in anger. Once the Hylian Champion disappeared, he looked forward, inspecting the destruction of the targets the knight had shot. He sat in silence, watching as the smoke disappeared into the winds.
"I will be the best," Revali uttered under his breath. "I will show that lowly silent knight, and the people of Hyrule. Don't underestimate me. Don't look down on me. Being considered beneath you… truly is asinine"

To those in the States: Happy Thanksgiving!
To those anywhere else: I hope you're having a wonderful day!
This chapter was a little different from my usual. If you've noticed, I tend to try and stay away from retyping and using direct scenes from in memories. Usually, I'll give context or add on to said memories, like what happened afterward.
Obviously, I still did that. This second part of the chapter was what happened after Revali's "Challenge" to Link in Rito Village. So why did I replay Zelda's memory from the Champions Ballad? I wanted to give a bit more context to it. To show more of how hard Revali is willing to work, yet show a bit more of his insecurities when he believes no one is around.
I hope you guys didn't mind seeing part of a memory already shown in the game, I know a lot of fanfictions rewrite those memories, so I hope I did it in a way that made it different. I don't plan to do it again unless it adds context to Link and Zelda.
I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter, let me know if you did! Remember to follow my Twitch to get more insight into the story!
