TRENTUNO
Jacqueline heard the doorbell ring and frowned. She had no idea who would be at their door this early in the morning. Jacquelines heart lurched when she realised it might be Rebekah. Quickly Jacqueline opened the door expecting to see the blonde woman who she hadn't spoken to in a few days.
But it wasn't Rebekah.
Jacqueline's eyes widened before she pulled the person into a hug. "Tyler!" She greeted the 18 year old happily.
Tyler was like her little brother.
Jacqueline was glad to see him, even if she had hoped it would be Rebekah. Jacqueline had spoken to Tyler and Davina everyday on the phone without fail. Jacqueline had listened to Davina complain about being bored for weeks and listened to the girl attempt to fish for Tyler related facts as subtly as possible. Tyler had mostly talked about the Pack or Davina and even mentioned Marcel a few times.
Though Tyler didn't really like Marcel.
Tyler chuckled as he hugged her back just as tightly. "Good to see you missed me" he joked
Jacqueline slapped him lightly on the shoulder and huffed. "I'll always miss you. Don't be an idiot" She smirked
Tyler laughed and kissed her cheek.
"Now. What are you doing here?" Jacqueline demanded as she allowed a little bit of worry to seize her.
Tyler smiled, "Honestly? I heard about everything gong on here and I wanted to help. I wanted to make sure you and Jeremy were okay" Tyler admitted before his face hardened a little. "Especially after everything you said about Elena"
Jacqueline sighed.
She nodded in understanding.
She knew it affected him as much as did her and Jeremy. Tyler may not be blood but he was as much a part of their little family as she is. Tyler had basically grown up in the Gilbert house. He might not have gotten along well with Elena but this still affected him too.
"Okay" she relented before grabbing her phone and keys. "Well, Jeremy is in the city staying with my friend and Elena is god knows where. So we're going to the Grill for breakfast"
Tyler grinned.
Jacqueline led him to her car and refused to acknowledge the slight disappointment she felt at having no previous plans. For weeks now she and Rebekah had gone out for breakfast every day.
That all stopped after they kissed though.
And that had been seven long days ago...
Jacqueline was starting to realise she had lost her friend forever now. She wasn't sure what had come over her, but it was bittersweet. Jacqueline hadn't expected to be attracted to Rebekah like that. Though now she realised she was, it put things into perspective. Jacqueline had realised she'd had stronger feelings for Rebekah for a while now.
There was no way of ignoring them now.
Not after that kiss.
Jacqueline had never done anything like that before. As much as it hurt that Rebekah clearly didn't feel the same... Jacqueline couldn't find any regret for the action in her heart.
It had been amazing.
Not that Rebekah seemed to agree though.
Jacqueline sighed as she drove and shook her head to rid herself of the thoughts. She needed to focus on the present. Not dwell on something that she couldn't change. Dwelling on things had never done anyone any good.
"So?" Tyler drew out, "What's Jeremy doing in the city?"
Jacqueline smiled proudly, "You know that art program?"
Tyler nodded.
"Well It's for an exhibition" Jacqueline stated with a wide smile as she parked the car. "Jeremy is going to watch a real art show and then he'll come back here and have to create one a piece to be shown in the next reveal"
Tyler whistled, "Damn"
Jacqueline nodded and climbed out of the car as they both headed into the Grill. "Yeah. I'm really proud of him. He loves it"
"He always did" Tyler agreed
Jacqueline led them to a table and they sat down. "Anyway how's things with the Pack? They know your here?"
Tyler nodded, "They do. New Orleans is crazy right now. The local witches are pissed at the vampires"
Jacqueline hummed and rolled her eyes.
Tyler snorted, "D is going good with practicing control. She missed you bringing her lattes though"
Jacqueline smiled, "She only reminds me everyday"
Tyler nodded, "I think she's bored up in the Church on her own. She's always texting me. The Pack jokes that I'm glued to my phone now" he huffed a little
"You two dating yet?" Jacqueline smirked
"What!" Tyler coughed awkwardly in surprise and embarrassment. "We- we're not dating. We're friends"
Jacqueline rolled her eyes and rested her chin on her hand. She gave him a look. "Come on, Ty!" She sighed, "You like her and you can't deny it"
Tyler huffed and begrudgingly nodded his agreement.
"You should make a move" Jacqueline informed him seriously.
Tyler rose a brow, "Why? Did she tell you something?" He asked trying to fake indifference
Jacqueline chuckled, "Not outright. However, she does ask about you when we talk"
Tyler smirked.
Jacqueline snorted and shook her head in fond exasperation. Jacqueline waved over one of the waitresses. "I'll have a chocolate shake and a waffle" Jacqueline said
Tyler nodded, "Same thanks"
They waitress was a young teen who didn't bother trying to smile before walking away. What great customer service...
Jacqueline looked back at Tyler, "You can stay with me. The spare bedroom is all yours"
"Are you sure?" Tyler asked, "I can see if mom will let me stay with her again?"
Jacqueline waved him off immediately as she shook her head. "Your family, Ty. We need to be together right now" she insisted and watched as he nodded and tried to hide a smile.
The waitress brought over their food.
REBEKAH POV:
Rebekah had agreed to go with Elijah for breakfast this morning. She knew he had only asked her because he wanted to know why she was upset.
But she couldn't tell him.
What was she supposed to say anyway?
Rebekah wasn't even really sure why she was so upset. Now that she looked back on things she had realised she felt more than just friendship for Jacqueline. Rebekah had spent every day with Jacqueline for the past few weeks. When they had been apart all she'd been able to think about was Jacqueline.
Jacqueline was a beautiful woman and Rebekah had certainly noticed.
This was as much Rebekah's fault as it is Jacquelines. Rebekah just didn't know what this meant for them yet.
Did it mean anything?
Rebekah had run away instead of dealing with how she felt. Maybe she had lost her chance to be with Jacqueline now?
Had there ever been a chance to begin with?
Was it a mistake?
Rebekah huffed and practically threw herself out of the car when Elijah parked in front of the Grill. Rebekah knew Elijah was watching her in worry but she couldn't find it in her to care. Her mind kept replaying what had happened with Jacqueline and what might happen now.
"Rebekah?" Elijah sighed and looked at her in concern. "What is troubling you?"
"Nothing" Rebekah whispered
Elijah looked highly doubtful and opened his mouth to comment. However, Rebekah started walking towards the Grill before he got the chance.
She knew it was rude...
Elijah didn't deserve it when he was only trying to comfort her about it. Rebekah just didn't know how to explain it to him. Hell she can barely understand it herself. All Rebekah knew was that she has very strong feelings for Jacqueline and is scared of how to go about them.
What would Elijah know about that anyway?
This is different.
Jacqueline is a woman for starters... a strong and confident and beautiful woman. This would be a lot different than any of Rebekah's previous love interests.
Rebekah slid into a booth and sulked as Elijah sat across from her with a sigh.
"Rebekah" Elijah began, "If my plan to stop mother came between you and your friend, I apologise sincerely-"
"Oh no!" Rebekah quickly denied as she finally realised what Elijah had assumed. It had all happened the same night after all. Rebekah felt bad as she realised Elijah had thought he was responsible for her friendship problems. Rebekah didn't want Elijah to feel bad when this had nothing to do with him.
"It's my fault" Rebekah admitted and intently studied the table.
"Rebekah if you told me what had happened, I might be of assistance" Elijah encouraged
Rebekah looked at her big brother and sighed. She didn't know what to say to him. Rebekah shrugged, "It's my fault. I don't really know how it all went so wrong" she admitted sadly. "It just happened so quickly and I fear I have made a mistake and lost my-" she cut herself off
The words burned on her tongue.
Rebekah didn't want to be Jacqueline's friend... well, not just her friend.
That was the confusing part.
Rebekah found herself wanting more than just friendship. She wanted to kiss Jacqueline again. Well, truthfully, she wanted to do more than just kiss Jacqueline. Rebekah didn't know what to think about those feelings. This had never happened before and she wasn't sure what it meant. She had never been attracted to a woman before. However, her attraction to Jacqueline was undeniable and there was no doubt in her mind as to it indeed being attraction.
A laugh caught Rebekah's attention.
Rebekah looked at the other side of the Grill and spotted Jacqueline.
Jacquelines back was to them but Rebekah knew it was her all the same. Jacqueline was laughing at something a man had said. The guy looked young, probably a little younger than Jacqueline.
Though what did age matter?
The guy was attractive, Rebekah supposed. He had dark hair and dark brown eyes, tan skin and a wide smile. He was muscular and he was looking a Jacqueline like she hung the very sun in the sky.
Rebekah's face fell in disappointment.
Jacqueline was a stunning woman who's beautiful inside and out, that much was rather obvious. Jacqueline would have no shortages in suitors of both genders and all ages jumping at a chance with her. Rebekah had been a fool to think otherwise.
It was her own fault she missed her chance.
Rebekah had run away and clearly this man wasn't going to do the same.
"Is that Jacqueline?" Elijah asked, though he sounded like he already knew it was. Elijah was just trying to figure out if the It's what she was looking at.
She wasn't an idiot.
Rebekah nodded nonetheless. "Yes brother it is" Rebekah agreed
Jacqueline and the man stood.
They even hugged before they both headed to go back to Jacquelines place.
Rebekah was not above listening in to their conversation. Though she wished she hadn't. Cause now she knew that Jacqueline was inviting the guy back to her house and she didn't want to know what they would be doing.
"Who was the young man Jacqueline was with?" Elijah asked
Rebekah sulked, "I don't know"
Elijah frowned at her.
Rebekah ignored him as she stood up. "I'm not hungry anymore. I'll see you at home, Elijah" with that she left as quickly as possible. All Rebekah wanted to do was crawl into bed and nurse her broken heart.
Cause she had missed her chance.
She had been afraid and ignored Jacqueline when Jacqueline tried to reach out. Now Jacqueline had moved on and Rebekah had lost, quite possibly, the one good thing in her life.
ELIJAH POV:
Elijah was filled with equal parts relief and worry that he wasn't the cause of Rebekah's friendship problems. He had been worried and guilty when Rebekah announced that she and Jacqueline had a falling out. He thought it might have been because he asked Rebekah to kidnap Elena.
Apparently that's not the case though.
Yet Rebekah is still miserable.
Elijah couldn't help but be a little suspicious that his sister was hiding something. Rebekah had been quite evasive of giving any real answers. Though he doubted whatever it was is bad, he can see it's hurting Rebekah. Elijah had hoped she would tell him about it at breakfast. However, seeing Jacqueline and that young man in the Grill had seemed to worsen Rebekah's mood.
Even Kol had steered clear of bothering Rebekah this past week.
"Well?" Nicklaus asked as soon as Elijah walked through the door again. Nicklaus looked at him expectantly, having known about this mornings efforts to help Rebekah.
Elijah pursed his lips, "I am afraid I do not have a grasp on the situation" he admitted
Kol snorted, "So much for fixing her bad mood"
Elijah gave Kol a look that thankfully made Kol shut up. Not that Elijah would voice such a relief aloud. He did love his siblings but sometimes Kol failed to grasp appropriate times to speak.
Nicklaus sighed, "Well? Did she say anything?" He demanded impatiently
Rebekah and Nicklaus had always been the closest amongst them all. They hurt each other like nobody else can, but they always forgave. Rebekah was truly one of the only people Nicklaus allowed his love to show for. Hence why Rebekah's apparent sadness was troubling him.
It troubled Elijah too.
Elijah had seen Rebekah go through many things. From her first heartbreak to pure joy. Yet he had never seen her as truly sad as she is now.
It was worrying.
Elijah sighed, "She was rather vague. Rebekah confirmed it was not Elena's role as hostage to create a falling out. Though I can confirm this is about Jacqueline as we suspected. Rebekah said that It was her own fault... she said she made a mistake and it all happened rather quickly"
"Well what the bloody hell does that mean?!" Kol huffed in annoyance
"Maybe we should ask Jacqueline" Nicklaus stated and stood
"No" Elijah denied as he recalled the young man from the Grill.
"Why not?" Nicklaus demanded
"Nicklaus do you know of a young man other then Jeremy in Jacquelines life. He looked younger than Jacqueline, dark hair" Elijah sighed knowing if anyone would know it was Nicklaus
Nicklaus paused, "It could have been the werewolf boy" he said
"His relation to Jacqueline would be?" Elijah inquired
Nicklaus huffed at the question but answered anyway. "He was supposed to be like Jeremys brother or something. I don't know. He's a Lockwood though, not a Gilbert. I was going to use him in the sacrifice but then Damon killed his uncle and he left town"
"He has not returned since?" Elijah asked thoughtfully
"No" Nicklaus said before narrowing his eyes. "Why does it matter?"
Elijah sighed, "I believe he was the young man with Jacqueline this morning. Rebekah seemed upset by his presence but I can't think of why" he said keeping his voice even and controlled as he lied.
He could think of only one reason.
And it fit the situation.
Elijah had seen jealousy in Rebekah's eyes this morning. He had originally assumed Rebekah and Jacquelines falling out had been over the boy though. Now it appeared Rebekah's jealousy might have been over Jacqueline instead.
Could his sister have feelings for Jacqueline?
Elijah didn't know.
He didn't honestly know what to think at the moment. However he did know that he needed to test his theory.
"We're going to host a dinner tonight" Elijah said as he stood from his chair.
"What?" Kol asked in confusion
Elijah simply nodded, "Invite the Salvatore brothers, Elena, Jeremy, Jacqueline and this Lockwood boy. I'll inform Rebekah of the event"
"How is this going to help?" Nicklaus asked
Elijah kelp his composure as he looked between his brothers. "Trust me" he said before walking away. If the Lockwood boy was Jacquelines 'brother' then Rebekah should be a little happier to realise it. He didn't know what had happened but he hoped that bringing Jacqueline over would allow for them to sort it out.
Maybe they would become friends again?
Or if Elijahs suspicions were proven true, then maybe they would become more than that.
He had observed his sister over the duration of her friendship with Jacqueline. Elijah had seen the obvious difference in Rebekah. He found his sister was happier and more confident than ever before. Jacqueline is good for Rebekah in whatever capacity the two wish to have.
Elijah sped up to Rebekah's room and knocked on the door.
He wasn't surprised to receive no reply. Rebekah had been do that a lot as of late. Disregarding that, Elijah entered the room and found Rebekah laying on her bed sadly.
"Rebekah" he greeted
She looked at him with a sigh, "Yes Elijah?"
Elijah held back a frown at her lack of care. This was not how Rebekah normally reacted, even when her heart is broken. This was completely different...
"I have come to inform that you that I am hosting a dinner tonight. I want you to be there with us" Elijah said leaving no room for negotiation.
Rebekah sighed, "Who will you be trying to impress tonight?"
"The Gilberts and their extended family" Elijah said diplomatically and pretended to ignore the panic on Rebekah's face. "I want to ensure no further ordeals occur"
With that Elijah left her bedroom knowing that if he stayed she would try and get out of it. Elijah knew that he was going to have to force Jacqueline and Rebekah together if neither were willing to meet on their own. Even if this night was a ploy he still hoped to bring peace between this town and his family.
Hopefully two good things could come of this night.
Elijah went about getting the cooks to prepare dinner. He spent most of his time making the last minute preparations. Rebekah had yet to emerge from her room all day. Even though both Kol and Nicklaus had tried to tempt her out.
Rebekah had not budged.
Elijah genuinely worried Rebekah might refuse him tonight. He hadn't seen his sister like this before and he certainly could not predict how she would react.
That bothered him incredibly.
Not once in a 1000 years had Rebekah been so upset. Yet Elijah really had no idea what it was about nor how to help. Elijah hoped he was doing the right thing tonight.
He'd hate for it to be worse.
The doorbell rang.
Elijah straightened his suit jacket and strode to the door. He could hear Jacqueline warning the Salvatores to behave on the other side and smiled fondly. Elijah didn't find that he liked too many people but he was rather fond of Jacqueline nonetheless.
He opened the door and gave a polite smile, "Thank you for coming. Please, come inside" he opened the door for them.
Jacqueline stepped forward politely and smiled, "Thank you for inviting us, Elijah. Truly It's a pleasure" she said and Jacqueline looked like she meant it too.
"I wouldn't exactly call this a pl-" Damon began before he started coughing
Jacquelines smile grew tight as she turned and rose a threatening brow at Damon. "Damon was just about to say how much he enjoyed receiving the invitation. Right, Damon?" Jacqueline asked sweetly
Damon continued coughing and gave a thumbs up.
Jacqueline nodded and obviously relinquished whatever magical hold she'd had on Damon. Elijah let his lips turned up briefly in amusement at the interaction.
He understood Jacquelines position all too well...
"Ah the lovely Jacqueline" Kol grinned as he walked into the room. Kol took Jacquelines hand and kissed it in greeting. "Anytime your ready to talk about your magic, darling, I'm all ears"
Jacqueline smiled in amusement.
"Let's get this over with, shall we?" Damon sighed in exasperation and earned himself a warning look from Jacqueline.
Elijah led the way.
They walked into the dining room and took their seats. Elijah looked to Kol when he noticed neither Nicklaus nor Rebekah were with them. Kol gave a small sigh before taking his seat.
"I will fetch my siblings and then we may commence the evening" Elijah announced before speeding up to Rebekah's room.
Rebekah was sitting on her bed - fully dressed but making no move to join them.
Nicklaus was hovering with an oddly worried look on his face.
Elijah looked between them, "Will you be joining us?" Rebekah sighed and silently stood as she brushed past him down towards the dining room. Elijah looked to Nicklaus for an explanation but only received a shrug from his younger brother.
Elijah signed.
He walked back into the room and took his own seat. "Thank you all for coming tonight. I'm sorry" he looked at the young Lockwood boy. "I do not believe we have met before. I'm Elijah Mikaelson"
"I'm Tyler Lockwood" he nodded pleasantly
Rebekah looked up and peered at the boy with a small frown on her face. "You're Jacquelines brother?" She asked hesitantly
Tyler nodded and gave Jacqueline a rather sheepish smile. "Yeah. I didn't realise she talked about me" he admitted looking a little embarrassed
Elijah studied Rebekah closely as she looked deep in thought. He wondered what Rebekah was thinking now that she knew Tyler was Jacquelines family.
Rebekah smiled, "All good things" she assured
Elijah let out a silent breath and exchanged a look with his brothers. While Kol looked confused, Nicklaus looked a little suspicious of the reaction. Elijah just hoped Nicklaus would keep any and all suspicions to himself for now.
"Let's eat" Elijah said before gesturing for the food to be brought out.
He could only hope the night went well from here on out. Though as Jacqueline comfortably engaged in conversation, Elijah figured it would go fine.
