"It's not a crime to love what you cannot explain"
Klaus Mikaelson, Vampire Diaries
QUARANTAQUATTRO
"This will be your room" Jacqueline said as she showed Hayley around the house or rather, mansion, they would all be staying in for now. "I'll get Jeremy and Tyler to help you with all the dust"
Hayley nodded as she inspected the room.
"This place is ancient" Hayley commented but gazed out the impressive window anyway.
Jacqueline snorted, "I was expecting it to be like the one back in Mystic Falls. That place was bigger than my whole house but this... well, it's certainly enough room for everyone" she shrugged
You lived in Mystic Falls?" Hayley asked
"Not when you were there apparently" Jacqueline said as she pulled off a sheet from the small couch and table. "I left for a few years"
Hayley nodded, "Mystic Falls was always so drama filled the entire time I was there"
"Still is" Jacqueline confirmed, "It wasn't growing up though... that didn't happen until after I left. Though I never did like the town too much anyway"
"So, uh, are you and Elijah together or something?" Hayley asked
Jacqueline laughed and looked up to see Hayley's questioning gaze on her again. She smirked, "Actually Rebekah and I are together" she announced with amusement at the pink that tinged Hayley's cheeks.
"Oh! The sister..." Hayley nodded in embarrassment, "Good for you"
Jacqueline watched Hayley for a moment longer as her suspicions of Hayley being interested in Elijah were growing more and more. She would just have to pay attention and see how that all works out for them. Though Jacqueline did not plan on running around playing match maker for them.
Rebekah probably would.
"Thanks" Jacqueline hummed as she fixed the table. "So, in all this time has anyone asked you how you feel?" she looked up at Hayley as she worked to fix the furniture.
"About having a miracle baby with a psychotic one night stand?" Hayley shot back sarcastically
Jacqueline rolled her eyes, "About being a mother" she corrected bluntly
"Oh. I... well, I was abandoned when I was a born and my adoptive parents kicked me out the second I triggered the werewolf curse. So... I don't really know actually cause I never really had a mother of my own" Hayley admitted honestly
Jacqueline blinked in surprise.
She didn't know anything about Hayley but she hadn't expected that to be the answer to her question. Though even a fool would be able to see how unsure and nervous Hayley is about all this. Jacqueline had briefly assumed it was due to the way Hayley had found out and the drama that occurred after it.
"It's difficult at first" Jacqueline began as she recalled those early stages. "When they're newborns and you have to make adjustments in your life for that. They shit and cry and never sleep when you want them to" she chuckled
It was true though.
Elena had been a fussy eater when she was a baby.
Jeremy had never wanted to sleep during the nights. Then he would fall asleep while playing or something equally as inconvenient.
"You have kids?" Hayley looked briefly surprised before realisation dawned on her face. "Sorry. Jeremy and Tyler are yours, right? I just - I don't know, you didn't really look old enough"
Hayley looked embarrassed again.
"It's complicated. Jeremy is technically my little brother and Tyler isn't blood related at all" Jacqueline sighed, "That doesn't make them any less family though. I raised Jeremy and Elena when our parents wouldn't - so just because I'm not biologically a mother doesn't mean I don't understand it. I raised them both from the day they were born"
Hayley smiled, "At least someone was there to look after them then"
Jacqueline nodded, "Tyler's like my younger brother - It doesn't particularly matter what roles we all fall into though. Family is family"
Hayley nodded.
They continued cleaning up the room Hayley would be staying in for the next few minutes. Jacqueline used the vampire speed to make it that much faster too. Neither of them said any more to each other that wasn't cleaning related but they worked quickly to get the job done. Jacqueline was hoping she'd be done before Rebekah gets back with Jeremy and Tyler again.
Rebekah had taken the boys to a bar to learn - snatch, feed, erase.
Jeremy had gotten his daylight ring and was putting it to good use. He had seemed to gain a little confidence since they had moved to New Orleans.
Mystic Falls had held him back.
Jacqueline's phone rang and she sighed before stepping out to answer it. "Hello, Kol. What can I do for you?"
"Darling, nothing at the moment. Other than telling me if Nik and Elijah know of an incident involving 6 dead vampires?" Kol asked cheekily, "I don't fancy being in trouble when I get home"
"Kol" Jacqueline groaned in annoyance, "Why didn't you call Rebekah with this? Or Elijah?"
Kol laughed, "I haven't gotten the chance to annoy you all day, darling. You're very welcome"
Jaqueline hung up on him.
She huffed and walked down the stairs when she heard Hayley talking to someone who just walked in the door. Jacqueline really hoped it was Rebekah cause they hadn't gotten to spent much time together this morning in the busy house.
"Who are you?" Hayley asked
"You must be the maid" Rebekah said dismissively
"Hello" Hayley said dryly. "Not the maid though"
"Right" Rebekah sighed, "You're the werewolf girl my brother Klaus knocked up. I was expecting to see some kind of supernatural miracle baby bump... I guess your not showing yet. Hayley, isn't it?"
"You have your brothers manners" Hayley snorted
"And his temper too, so watch it" Rebekah added warningly
Jacqueline faltered slightly in her step as she felt the jealousy coming from Rebekah. The one thing about having a BloodBond meant they couldn't hide their feelings from each other - even if they themselves were refusing to acknowledge the emotions. Jacqueline wasn't sure what to make of the jealousy Rebekah felt when talking to Hayley.
What did it mean?
Jacqueline guessed it was a conversation they could have later though...
"I see you've met Hayley" Jacqueline smirked as she walked into the room. Jacqueline kissed her girlfriend on the lips in greeting. "How was today? Did Jeremy have fun with the new daylight ring?"
Rebekah nodded and wrapped her arms around Jacqueline's waist, preventing her from pulling away again. "Jeremy and Tyler had a perfectly good time. How were my brothers? Did they behave?"
Jacqueline sighed
Rebekah chuckled, "I know that look. What did they do now?"
"Kol has apparently killed 6 of Marcel's vampires and want's us to deal with Klaus and Elijah before he gets home" she rolled her eyes with a huff of annoyance. "Elijah and Klaus were... well, they were themselves"
"Mhmn... did you invite Davina over tonight?" Rebekah asked as she rested her forehead against Jacqueline's. Neither one caring about Hayley's curious eyes taking in the interaction.
Jacqueline smirked and hummed, "Actually. I was thinking we could just spend the night together and leave the guys to fend for themselves"
Rebekah laughed and nodded easily in agreement. "I do believe we haven't spent much alone time together since we made the move to New Orleans"
"Ugh! Do you mind!" Jeremy made a face as he walked back into the room. "I'm a vampire now! I can hear you talking about things I don't want to know!"
Hayley snorted.
"You don't have to listen" Rebekah retorted with an amused roll of her eyes. "Just because you're a vampire doesn't mean you get to eavesdrop all the time"
"Well why else would we have advanced hearing for?" Tyler said as he walked towards the stairs with a few bags of chips in hand.
Jacqueline and Rebekah exchanged an exasperated look.
"Why don't the two of you go help Hay-" Jacqueline started before both boys vamp sped up the stairs and into the safety of their rooms. Jacqueline stared at the stairs momentarily bewildered at what had just happened. She blinked at Rebekah in shock, "They did not just do that!"
Rebekah bit her lip in an effort not to laugh.
"I'm gonna kill them both!" Jacqueline yelled
Elijah and Klaus' underhanded ploy to get Jane-Anne's body back to the witches in an exchange for Hayley had been successful. Klaus had pretended to have a small little hissy fit and bit one Marcel's best vampires in a dramatic show. Then just as Marcel had been defeated in thinking his vampire would die, Elijah swooped in with all the answers to Marcel's problems.
Klaus's blood to heal the bite.
All Marcel had to do to get the blood was a tiny little favour to Elijah... allowing Elijah to have Jane-Anne's body.
Now Marcel didn't really have a choice but to accept if he wanted to make sure his guys didn't start wondering if they were really on the winning side. Marcel accepted the deal and swooped into his followers looking like a hero. Of course, none of those vampires knew the magic remedy Marcel had found was Klaus' blood.
Thus keeping that little tid-bit of information a secret for later use.
Jacqueline had no doubt that the next time it would be revealed would be equally as dramatic. That just seemed to be how things worked when around the Mikaelson's.
Even their plots have flare.
Though no matter how it happened, it got done, and Elijah exchanged Jane-Anne for Hayley. Though Sophie was still magically linked to Hayley by an intricate curse Jacqueline wasn't sure she could undo without harming the baby. Curses like these, linking spells on a person's entire lifeforce, aren't meant to be taken lightly.
Sophie was desperate though.
Though sooner or later Sophie's own desperation and one track mind would get her killed. Cause while Klaus might be going along with the witches plan for right now - he wouldn't for long. Not until he was sure he didn't need the witches on his side.
In the meanwhile they would all be putting on the performance of their lives.
Which was how Jacqueline found herself moving in time to the music, body moving and hips swaying. Her ego preened under the stares she felt following her every tantalising move. Jacqueline may only every way to be with one specific woman, but that didn't mean knowing others thought she was hot would have no effect.
It was only better when she knew it was all a ploy.
A ploy to aid Klaus and Elijah in their plan to take Marcell down and protect the new addition to their odd family unit.
Jacqueline wouldn't fail them.
She and Klaus were closer than ever with the honest admissions the other night at the doc. Sure, they'd had to drink half a bottle of bourbon each to be able to make them... but that wasn't really the point.
They now shared a new understanding even if it wasn't voiced.
Klaus is scared.
Just like Jacqueline had been before almost every major decision in her life that involved even an ounce of emotions. Jacqueline had reminded Klaus of that fact. She reminded him of when she was scared out of her mind at completing the BloodBond with Rebekah. Then it had turned out to be one of the best things she had ever done. Jacqueline had reminded him of that and then she had shown him the pure joys of raising a child.
Raising a tiny little human who loves you unconditionally.
And all you have to do to get that love is be there for that tiny little human.
Klaus had done it once before.
Jacqueline had managed to get Klaus to let go of some of that fear just enough for him to realise what was right in front of him. She was glad to see that he was going to take what he wants - whether he could admit to how much he wants it or not.
If she had to swing her hips a little on the dance floor to help with that... then who was she to complain?
Though Rebekah had pouted about it.
"The city of New Orleans. People of all stripes and flavours, from all over the country come here to party on our streets. Some are just looking for fun, others something darker and more dangerous. So, we invite them into my home and we give it to them" Marcel explained as he stood above the dance floor watching. "Then at the stroke of midnight, everything changes"
Jacqueline rolled her eyes to herself as she listened into the conversation.
Men.
So, dramatic!
Jacqueline laughed as the overhead lights flashed a bunch of different colours. The signal was given - and the vampires who had been enjoying the party started to feed on all the humans in sight. Screams filled the room but Jacqueline knew that none of the humans would die tonight. She forced her shoulders to remain relaxed as the party changed around her to something more sinister. Though no vampire dared to approach her, knowing she had explicit permission to kill them on sight for even trying.
"And it's time to feed" Marcel needlessly added, "This is how I keep my guys happy. The occasional all-you-can-eat buffet"
Using the distraction of all the vampires currently being busy feeding, Jacqueline pulled out her phone and texted Elijah. This part of the plan was actually her idea and she really hoped it was gonna work like they want it to. It was simple really, Jacqueline would inevitably have to reveal she isn't loyal to Marcel. Then they'd have nobody on the inside... unless they found someone who wouldn't be suspicious to take her place.
Like a newly turned vampire...
That wouldn't be suspicious because all of Marcels vampires take vervain now.
However, if they created a day-zero vampire and got to them before Marcel and his vervain. Well, then they would have the perfectly controllable spy.
It's perfect.
Once the text was sent Jacqueline turned in Marcel and Klaus' direction. Looking up at where they stood on the balcony overlooking it all. They were grinning like two old friends would. Though she knew Klaus had to be hurting a little on the inside at seeing the man he thought of as a son had not only lived, but thrived without him.
She met their eyes.
Then Jacqueline smirked and gave a small little wave as she continued dancing. Klaus's grin widened ever so slightly as he recognised that their plan for tonight was going well. Jacqueline chuckled, she was rather good at multitasking - collecting information and gaining Marcel's trust while also having a little fun. Jacqueline hadn't been to a party since before she had returned to Mystic Falls and she had missed having some fun.
She'd recommend this one to Kol later.
Kol would love this.
Jacqueline grinned and tuned back into Marcel and Klaus' conversation again. Though only Klaus was aware she could do such a thing. It was why she was the perfect person to get information. Cause Marcel and the vampires didn't think she could ever overheard them. They think they know what she is - but they don't.
They underestimate her... and It'll be their downfall.
"My nightwalkers love it" Marcel was saying, "Got them working hard, trying to earn a daylight ring. They deserve to blow off a little steam. My daywalkers, the trusted few, they just like to party"
"Seems like a lot of graves to dig" Klaus commented idly
"Yeah, well, we can't kill them all or tourism will drop. So we give them a little vamp blood and heal them" Marcel explained, "Then we compel them and send 'em on their way. No muss, no fuss"
"I'm impressed" Klaus said
"Nothing I didn't learn from you back in the day" Marcel allowed humbly
Jacqueline shook her head a little in exasperation as she listened to them. Marcel sounded very much like he enjoyed showing off all the ways he had improved what Klaus had originally built. This was just another classic example of times where ego get's in the way of business.
Marcel was playing a dangerous game.
He was overly cocky in Jacqueline's opinion - but she had always thought that about him. When it had been all fun and games the fact didn't matter much. Though now it does and she couldn't help but think Marcel was a bigger idiot than she first thought. Marcel may be charismatic and more charming than Klaus but Marcel was in no way stronger or more capable.
He'd do well to remember that.
But he won't.
Cause at the moment Marcel thinks that just because he's the current king, he'll stay the king.
Being too confident is a thing.
A thing that Jacqueline was going to exploit as best she could. She wanted all the information she can get before one of these idiots finally put two and two together. Jacqueline did happen to find herself wondering just how long it would take for that to happen though.
"Jacqueline" Thierry called as he approached, "Marcel wants you to accompany him for drinks with the Hybrid"
She frowned, "Why?"
Thierry sighed and moved closer to lower his voice enough to not be overheard. "Marcel doesn't trust Klaus yet. I think he wants both a distraction and a buffer between them"
Jacqueline hummed as she looked up to the balcony and met Marcel's eyes. This wasn't what she expected to happen and she didn't know how to feel about it. There were a couple theories she had for why Marcel would want her with them and none of them included being a 'buffer' between the men.
Marcel was making a move.
A move that Jacqueline didn't fully understand yet.
She walked over to the stairs and met the men at the bottom with a charming enough smile. "Marcel" Jacqueline greeted, making sure to physically show that he had her full attention. Jacqueline knew that by completely ignoring Klaus, she was effectively dismissing the Hybrid and boosting Marcel's ego at the same time.
Marcel looked pleased at what he believed to be an unconscious dismissal.
Marcel grinned, "Jacqueline. I'd like you to meet an old friend of mine - Klaus Mikaelson" Marcel clapped a hand on Klaus's shoulder as he introduced them.
Jacqueline looked at Klaus and nodded blankly, "Nice to meet you" she offered Klaus a rather indifferent look as she returned her attention to Marcel. "Thierry said you were asking for me?"
Marcel smirked.
"I was actually" Marcel nodded and threw an arm over her shoulders as he steered her out the exit of the party. "Join us for drinks?"
It wasn't a question though.
"Of course" Jacqueline easily accepted anyway. She remained as casual as ever despite the fact she still wasn't sure what Marcel's angle here was.
Did he know she knew Klaus already?
Was this a test of loyalty?
Or could this possibly be just Marcel showing off to Klaus. Wanting to look he has it all - money, loyalty, New Orleans and a woman at his side?
Jacqueline forced the thoughts into the back of her mind for now, she could dwell on that later once she has more information. If she was going to remain calm and sharp then she had to focus on the here and now of it all. They still have to figure out how Marcel is monitoring the use of magic in New Orleans. He isn't likely to share with someone he doesn't explicitly trust. Klaus wasn't going to make that list and right now Jacqueline having Marcel's trust was their only real chance at finding out.
"So, love, you're a witch?" Klaus asked as they all walked through the streets of New Orleans.
Jacqueline hummed, "I am" she agreed
"I don't know if you are aware, but Klaus here, he's a Hybrid" Marcel informed her jovially. "That's half vampire and half werewolf"
"Impressive" Jacqueline agreed
Klaus scoffed slightly, "It's more than just impressive, love"
"That it is" Marcel chuckled before he steered them into a small little bar and towards one of the tables in the window. Jacqueline took her seat beside Marcel and across from Klaus without a word. She remembered Marcel taking her here one time for drinks. This had been the table they had sat at then too.
"Far cry from tonight's party" Klaus commented but took a seat
Marcel flagged a bartender down.
"Yeah... well, we can talk business here a lot easier" Marcel allowed
Business?
Jacqueline swore she was completely at a loss of what exactly her role here tonight was going to be. Marcel had never really spoken about his 'business' with her before. At least not when it hadn't involved stopping the Harvest ritual, that is.
Marcel's eyes lingered on a blonde woman who walked over to a seat across the room.
Klaus rose a brow and smirked, "Ahh. In pursuit of the bartender from Rousseau's, I see?" Klaus chuckled as he looked at Marcel knowingly.
Marcel sighed and shrugged before glancing at Jacqueline and then back to Klaus. "We'll see, I guess, my love life is a working progress" Marcel vaguely answered before redirecting the conversation. "Now, the coroner called. He's got my number in case any dead tourists show up"
"Let me guess. Dead tourists with a stamp on their hand?" Klaus nodded
"It happens. Someone takes a drunken tumble off a balcony or into the Mississippi..." Marcel shrugged, "Apparently I've already got two of them tonight"
Looks like Elijah had already done his part.
Good.
Klaus just shrugged before he once again noticed Marcel's wandering eyes. Klaus stood and stepped into the blonde human's way. "Excuse me, love? What's that your studying?" Klaus asked with a charming enough smile
"Abnormal psychology" the blonde told him
Jacqueline snorted.
Klaus smirked, "Abnormal psychology. Well... perhaps you could help me diagnose my friend over here" Klaus guided the blonde over to their table. "He's been a little bit depressed. Can't keep his mind off a girl. He tells me she's a queen fit for a king"
Marcel chuckled a in a display of embarrassment, looked down at his drink briefly.
Jacqueline watched the woman who seemed more charmed by Klaus than Marcel. She was glad that Marcel didn't seem to notice though. However, Jacquelines eyes narrowed at the genuine smile on Klaus' face.
Klaus likes the blonde too?
"I think he should cut his losses and move on" Klaus said
Marcel looked up at that.
"What's your professional opinion, love?" Klaus asked the woman
A faint blush stained the woman's cheeks. "Be a nice guy... and maybe the opportunity will present itself someday" the blonde smiled sarcastically before making her way to the door.
Jacqueline immediately liked the blonde!
"Hey!" Marcel stood, his attention easily caught by the blonde now. "How about tonight. 9 o'clock? I'll meet you right here?"
"I'll take it under consideration" The blonde woman said before walking straight out the door without a second glance.
"Harsh" Jacqueline smirked in amusement.
Marcel rolled his eyes to hide the wounded pride. "Jealous?" Marcel threw back at her with an easy grin, though it didn't really reach his eyes. Cause as much as he probably would like her to be jealous - he knew she wasn't.
Jacqueline smiled at him anyway, "You know me, Marcel" she shrugged
"Yeah. You're loyal but you don't love anyone" Marcel nodded and slung his arm back over her shoulders as he sat back down. "That's why I like you, Jacqueline. Cause you're loyal to me and not gonna get that ice cold heart broken over a little dating"
Jacqueline hummed and forced herself not to throw his arm off her shoulders. "I do like that woman though" she said honestly, "Ballsy but nice"
And the perfect distraction to keep Marcel busy. Marcel always seemed to go for the women who will give him a chase. Marcel thrived off the attention freely given to him but only returned it to women who didn't swoon.
The blonde hadn't swooned.
That made the bartender studying psychology the perfect way of distracting a player like Marcel.
Everyone knows the way to a man is through three simple things; pants, pocket and pride.
