"Why do I have to do the dishes! Can't it be someone else's turn?" Kol whined, "I won't be doing them today, brother!"
Elijah gave him a look that said otherwise.
Jacqueline snorted.
However, before any more could be said about the topic, the doorbell rung. Immediately everyone tensed. Nobody but the witches knew they were living here. They weren't on good terms with witches anymore though.
"Tara can answer the door" Jacqueline quickly stood as everyone followed.
They were ready for a fight.
"I can hear a heartbeat" Jeremy said, "Does that means it's a human?"
"No. Witches and werewolves have heartbeats" Tyler pointed out lowly as the boys followed everyone else across the house. The plantation was so large it meant the kitchen was nowhere near the front door.
"Wait" Klaus said suddenly, stopping in his tracks before giving a shake of his head. "It's just Cami" he sighed
Cami?
Jacqueline rose a brow and watched as Klaus went and answered the door. She knew, as a werewolf that Klaus had recognised Cami's scent. Similarly to how her magic can sense other supernaturals. Or like how vampires can hear heartbeats.
This was just a perk of being a werewolf.
Jacqueline just hadn't realised he had been around Cami long enough to know the scent that well.
Contrary to popular belief - werewolves can only recognise someone's scent if they're around it often. Meaning they can't recognise a randoms scent after just meeting them. It's usually just friends, family, and anyone relevant to them.
Apparently that included Cami?
Jacqueline shrugged when she noticed Rebekah's questioning gaze.
It seemed that nobody had known Klaus and Cami spent that much time together. Jacqueline had been under the impression Klaus only interacted with the blonde when they needed to compel the woman. As far as Jacqueline could recall they only compelled Cami a few times.
Maybe this was a personal visit?
Cami had seemed more genuinely interested in Klaus than Marcel.
"You compelled me!" Cami spat as soon as she stood face to face with Klaus. "Look" Cami shoved a piece of paper at Klaus without letting him get a word in edgewise.
"Love-"
"No! You compelled me to forget as soon i leave! That way I'm too busy trying to figure out if I'm loosing my damn mind, to realise I'm playing spy for an immortal egomaniac!"
Klaus scoffed in a tone that suggested he was amused.
Jacqueline thought there might have been a little hurt in the scoff as well. She exchanged a look with the others as they overheard.
Not like it was hard to hear though.
Cami was yelling.
"You- oh god. You've been making me go out with Marcel!" Cami gasped, "20 minutes ago I thought I liked Marcel. I'm going crazy, Klaus, you have to stop this. Please"
Klaus sighed, "I only compelled you to give Marcel a chance, love. Technically anything you felt for him was entirely real"
"You think your so clever, don't you? Compelling the poor nieve bartender?" Cami pushed the papers further into his chest. "Look what I found. Real me - not your compelled minion/therapist"
"I remember this..." Klaus glanced at the papers in his hands.
"You think this is a joke?" Cami sounded close to tears at this point. "My sanity is not a joke!"
"No, love, I don't believe it is" Klaus murmured
Jacqueline sighed as she realised where this was going. Jacqueline liked Cami well enough to feel sympathy for the woman. This mess that Cami had gotten pulled into didn't have anything to do with the woman. Yet Cami was suffering because of it.
However, what really struck Jacqueline the most was Klaus' reaction to it all.
Clearly Klaus would do anything to protect his family, and to get what he wants. Everyone knew that without a doubt. Though it was the way he almost sounded regretful with Cami that was new. It didn't take a genius to realise Klaus cared for Cami. Jacqueline would even bet that if there had been a way to keep Cami out of this mess - Klaus would have taken it.
He wouldn't have admitted as much though.
Likely not even to himself.
Maybe love had made Jacqueline go soft... but she found herself not liking the position Klaus had been put in. Now that Jacqueline knew how utterly amazing love could be - she hated the idea of preventing Klaus from finding it. Jacqueline hadn't had any real contact with Cami but she knew Klaus well enough. Jacqueline had been a lot like Klaus before she met Rebekah.
She knew how scary letting someone in can be...
But she'd done it.
Jacqueline knew she was better off for it. Especially when she knew Rebekah would never betray her trust. Love didn't have to be a weakness - Jacqueline had learnt that it could be strength too.
"Okay..." Jacqueline stepped into the hallway. Giving a now embarrassed Cami a small smirk in greeting. Jacqueline touched Klaus' arm in silent comfort as she moved to stand beside him.
"Uh, hi, sorry" Cami flushed as she looked between Klaus and Jacqueline. Cami pursed her lips, "I didn't know you had company"
Was that jealousy?
Judging from the pang of amusement coming from Rebekah... Jacqueline realised it was.
Klaus' feelings were returned then, Huh?
Jacqueline smirked wider as she nodded, "We were finishing up family breakfast. Klaus has a real way with words, doesn't he? Cause I think what he meant to say was come on in - it's probably time someone explains all this to you"
Klaus just chuckled but he did step aside to welcome Cami inside the house.
Cami sighed.
"Indeed. I do believe this is the perfect opportunity for some time without the Mikaelson men" Rebekah grinned as she joined them in the hallway.
"Where are you women going then?" Klaus asked
"You just got kicked out of your own house man" Tyler sniggered, "I've seen Jacq drag people out kicking and screaming - don't question it, man. That would be embarrassing"
Kol snorted.
Klaus rolled his eyes and glanced at Jacqueline with a cocky smirk. "She wouldn't dare" Klaus said confidently
Jacqueline smirked.
Kol chuckled, "Brother I do believe my many 'incidents' are proof that she very much would"
Jacqueline hummed, "You can all go stay at the hotel for the weekend. It'll be great"
"We'll take care of Cami!" Davina smiled widely and grabbed Cami's hand, dragging the woman into the house. Clearly Davina was excited at the idea of a girls weekend. Especially since Cami had spent some time with Davina already.
Davina liked Cami.
"It could be fun" Hayley said, "I'll be the only one who can't drink... but I'll live vicariously through Jacqueline and Rebekah. I get the feeling they could both out drink me anyway"
"That's decided then" Rebekah nodded with finality.
Tara laughed at the look Elijah and Klaus exchanged as they accepted defeat.
"You should pack a bag or something" Jacqueline directed the suggestion towards Tyler and Jeremy.
"What?" Jeremy frowned
Tyler looked just as put out by what he knew wasn't a suggestion. "Us too? What did we do? Come on-"
"Best make it quick then" Rebekah grinned
Jacqueline snorted.
"Apparently because I'm a masochist I went by Sean's grave. I saw the words 'murder' written on his grave. I should be horrified... but it... it didn't bother me at all. I've slept like a baby every night this week, even though my twin brother hacked 9 priests to death in a his Church a few months ago." Cami started ranting, her voice showing her disgust with herself and the confusion. "A guy I've been seeing - Marcel. I don't even really like the guy to be honest... he's hot, nice smile, charming. That's never really been my type. He's too superficial, too egotistical"
"Tell me about it" Rebekah rolled her eyes in agreement
Jacqueline chuckled.
Cami briefly smiled but the woman was too upset to care much for jokes at the moment. Clearly there was a lot on Cami's mind that she needed to get out.
They were merely here to listen.
"We've only been on 2 dates" Cami admitted, "And I care more about him ignoring me than seeing 'murder' scrawled on my twins grave. For months after the massacre I couldn't think of anything else... and then suddenly, nothing. I need to feel that pain! Without it I feel broken, empty, like there's someone to blame and I'm letting them get away with it..."
"You've been compelled, Cami" Davina said, gently taking the blonde woman's hand in support and comfort.
Jacqueline pursed her lips.
Sure, she knew why Cami had been compelled and knew it had been necessary to do. However, Jacqueline had never considered the extent to which compulsion might affect Cami's life. Jacqueline had admittedly been thinking about her family and her own needs rather than Cami's. The compulsion Klaus had used was only supposed to get Cami to distract Marcel. Otherwise the only think compulsion should be doing is hiding the knowledge of supernatural.
This wasn't that though.
Jacqueline didn't know anything about this Sean kid. She had no part in compelling that grief away.
She supposed she could understand why Cami needs the painful memory to keep going every day. That one event seemed to have made such a large impact on Cami that it changed the woman forever. Without the memory of that event... well, Cami was lost. Jacqueline didn't think that had been Klaus' intention though. She figured Klaus had been trying to help the woman.
"How did you figure it out?" Hayley wondered and rubbed her growing stomach.
Cami sighed, "I wrote a code for myself. When that didn't work then I set a tape recorder and put it in my handbag"
That was... smart.
Jacqueline knew that there was a reason she liked Cami after all. The woman may be merely human but she's smart. Not many people would have thought to do that. It was really no wonder that Klaus has a thing for Cami. Klaus didn't seem like the type of person to be interested in someone boring and naïve - Cami was none of those things.
"Then you came here and confronted him?" Tara asked
Cami shrugged, "I planned on asking him what was going on. Then I saw him and I remembered..."
"Yeah. The compulsion" Rebekah nodded in understanding, having been the one to compel Cami to remember when Klaus left again.
"We can undo the compulsion" Jacqueline sighed. Everyone but Tara seemed surprised to hear Jacqueline knew how to reverse compulsion.
It was a BloodWitch thing.
"It will be a little painful though" Tara warned
Cami nodded quickly, "Please! Just give me my mind back"
"Okay..." Jacqueline agreed hesitantly as she stood from her seat on the couch and approached the blonde woman. "Just- just remember that Klaus isn't the bad guy, alright? I know you got caught up in this mess that wasn't yours. If you were protecting your family and unborn child, wouldn't you do anything?"
Cami pursed her lips before giving a slow nod.
"I-" Cami sighed, "This is all so crazy... but I guess, yeah, I think I would"
"For what it's worth" Rebekah said, "My brother can be a Grade-A jackass but I've never really seen him care for a woman before. Not like the way he does for you"
"He gets that little smile on his face when he sees you!" Davina grinned teasingly
Cami blushed.
Hayley nodded in agreement before adding, "I haven't known Klaus long. We only had a drunk one night stand... but I can see that the way he looks at you, Cami, is not usual for him"
"I really hope this doesn't deter you in still dating my brother" Rebekah hummed with a smirk
"We're not dating!" Cami protested immediately
Davina giggled, "Not yet"
Jacqueline held back a sigh as she held her hands to Cami's temples. "This is gonna hurt..." she warned
Jacqueline walked into the hotel room that the guys had all been sent off to stay the night at. The bags of breakfast take-away she had in hand were supposed to be a peace offering for them being kicked out of their own home. Jacqueline had volunteered to bring over the food. She knew Klaus would likely want an update on Cami but would be too proud to ask for it.
Jacqueline knew better than to think he didn't care though...
After all, she was the same with in regards to hiding her feelings. Whether or not she thought those feelings would be judged.
It was just a natural reaction.
Jacqueline's brows furrowed when she heard the classical music playing from inside the hotel room. Though this was more of an apartment than a hotel room if she were being accurate. With 4 bedrooms in the one floor, only one person had needed to take the couch. She had expected to hear bickering, fighting or even video games when she walked in... not classical music.
Who even listens to classical music anyway?
Maybe Elijah.
Jacqueline walked into the entertainment room, stopping dead in her tracks as she took in the sight. Elijah was reading a book on the couch, opposite him Klaus was doing the same. Tyler, Jeremy and Kol were sitting silently on the other couches, scrolling through their phones.
What the hell?
"So this is what you all do the first time you're off on your own?" Jacqueline scoffed at the absurdity of the scene. "Vampire book club?" she mocked
Kol snorted and looked up from his phone briefly to eye the bags in her hands. "Is that food, darling?"
Jacqueline stared at him for a second before she nodded and looked for a place to set the bags. Her brows raised when she realised she had completely missed the dead maid bleeding out over the coffee table. She supposed that was the only thing about this scene that was unsurprising. Instead she handed the styrofoam take away containers to each of them, not really wanting to touch the dead woman.
"But seriously?" Jacqueline prompted them all with raised brows. "What's with all the reading?"
"Reading edifies the mind, love" Klaus said as way of explanation. "Isn't that right Elijah?"
Elijah nodded, "Yes that it quite right, Niklaus"
Jacqueline blinked at them in her state of shock and confusion. Though none of them paid her any mind as they all went right back to their reading or scrolling on their phones.
This was weird.
Really weird.
"Well... okay then" Jacqueline shook her head a little at the men. "I'll just let myself out" she awkwardly added into the silence of being ignored. She could hardly believe she was being ignored in favour of reading and phone screens. Jacqueline scoffed and headed for the door before this could get any weirder than it already was.
"How did the sleepover go, love?" Klaus called before she could leave
"We explained everything to Cami - the truth" Jacqueline turned back around and looked at Klaus. He wasn't even bothering to look up from his book though. She crossed her arms over her chest with a smirk as she added, "Then we all got naked and had a pillow fight in the entertainment room"
That had their attention.
"You did?" Kol looked rather interested in the conversation now.
Jeremy made a face, "She's messing with you, man"
Kol deflated with a pout.
"It was the alcohol, I think" Jacqueline continued with a small shrug, relishing in the fact none of them seemed to be able to tell if she was bluffing or not. "Hayley was the only sober one, of course, I think she took a few pictures. Luckily Cami is the same size as me, cause those panties she was wearing are long gone"
Jacqueline calmly held onto her composure. An almost thoughtful look on her face as she spoke.
Blinking, she looked back at the men who had now forgotten all about their stuffy old books. Jacqueline shrugged innocently and walked right out the apartment door - ignoring Kol and Klaus' questions as she went.
It wasn't until she was back at her car, did she allow herself to laugh.
That was sure to make for some entertaining conversations once they all return home.
