LOLA BENNETT WAS A MOM...KINDA.
Technically, she wasn't Bonnie's mom but she might as well had been. There were even a few times Bonnie slipped up and called Lola 'mom'. Bonnie always apologized but Lola never minded because truth be told she did see herself as Bonnie's mother.
It's not like either of their parents did anything for them.
She was the one who paid for everything, took Bonnie to school, stood up for her, saved money for her future college tuition, taught her how to use a tampon when she first got her period, gave her the sex talk, raised her and everything else.
If someone caught Lola on an off day where she was tired or during a time where she was tipsy and asked her who Bonnie was to her Lola would absentmindedly reply "she's my daughter."
Being a mother (kinda) meant that Lola didn't get many days were Bonnie wasn't in the house or a free day.
Bonnie was supposed to be at Elena's house. So why was she banging on Lola Bennett's door at seven a.m?
"Lola!" Bonnie yelled, banging on the door. "It's seven! I've got school and you've got work! Wake up!"
Lola curled up around her surprisingly firm pillow, "I thought we you spending the night at Elena's!" She yelled back refusing to open her eyes.
What was with this girl and ruining her sleep?
"I came home last night," Bonnie deadpanned, "Elena's boyfriend came over and just...yeah...I left. I got home at like 2 a.m." she wiggled Lola's doorknob, "Why...why is the door locked?"
Lola sat up and rubbed her eyes before thinking hard. Bonnie was right. Lola never locked her bedroom door because she was an open person and because Bonnie sometimes had nightmares and liked to crawl in bed with her from time to time in the middle of the night.
Why did she lock her door?
She glanced around and—
Why does my bed feel lopsided?
She huffed and her hand squeezed her pillow when she heard something mumble.
Wait...mumble?
She whipped around and instead a pillow in her hand she had been an well defined muscled arm.
Laying in the bed next to her was the guy from last night fast asleep with the only thing covering his nakedness was Lola's pink bedsheet.
Lola's mouth fell open, "O-Oh, what the fuck?!" She shouted, she stumbled out of bed and covered herself with a blanket. She nudged the nudged the guy harshly, "Hey, hey uh...Eli," she hissed.
He only rolled over and buried his face in her pillow.
"Son of a—" Lola grabbed a pillow and hit him with it, "hey! Hey!" She went to hit him with the pillow again only for his hand to shot out and grab her wrist. She frowned, a bit dazed by his reaction speed.
Elijah sat up and stared at her seemingly amused, "What have I done to..." he glanced at the pillow in Lola's hands, "deserve such a rude awakening?" He slowly let go of her wrist and Lola held her wrist to her chest protectively.
His lips tilted into this small half smile and Lola blushed because—
Dammit he had dimples!
He eyed her carefully with his light brown eyes and Lola's throat felt dry. She wasn't used to handsome men. Not that the guys around mystic falls were ugly or anything just most of them just weren't her type. She didn't get to go out often because of Bonnie so the only guys she saw were snobby white guys who came to the restaurant for lunch. Or there were some guys in Mystic Falls who just weren't into black girls.
Lola cleared throat and forced herself to look away, "R-Right...sorry I just..." she forced out before Elijah stood not the least bit bothered about his nudity. "Uh...I—you—"
Elijah tilted his head, "You?" He eyed her very clearly amused by her reaction which Lola did not find amusing at all.
Lola swallowed, "W-Well...I, uh, y-you...I forgot," she muttered, looking away from his package.
"Lola!" Bonnie banged on the door again and wiggled the door knob. "What are you doing in there, are you okay?"
Oh, right.
Elijah's eyes narrowed, "Who is at your door?"
"My little sister, I have to drive her to school," she whispered hurriedly as she rushed to put on her underwear, "Look, uh...go get ready for school, okay, baby? Give me 10 minutes." She sighed in relief when she heard Bonnie's footsteps walking away. She turned to Elijah who was surprisingly already dressed, "Look, Elijah...uh-last night was good—great—uh...I saw stars you know and you're package is uh—you know—nice and I..." she turned bright red and shut her mouth. "I'm going to stop talking."
Elijah raised a brow, "What do you mean by my 'package' is nice?" His face was blank with only a raised a eyebrow. "I do not recall having a package."
Was this guy serious?
Lola turned to him from her place in front of her mirror as she tried to style her thick Maine of curly hair, "You seriously don't know what I meant by 'package'?"
"I believe I do not."
She searched his face for any signs that he was bullshitting her but Elijah had a surprisingly good poker face. He seemed deadly seriously that he didn't know what she meant by his 'package'.
Lola blinked, "I meant your dick," she blurted out without thinking, "you know your pogo-stick, the little guy, your stick-shift, the—" she cut off her rambling when she noticed Elijah stifling a chuckle. She turned bright red, "you tricked me."
Elijah smiled a bit, "My apologizes, Ms.Lola," he said, "Your full name is 'Lola' correct?"
"It's actually 'Loretta'," Lola said quickly, slicking her hair back into a tight ponytail, "But don't call me that, only rich old white men call me that or my dad." She wrapped a robe around herself. "And though you are white and look very rich you're not old so just call me 'Lola'."
"Now you..." she stopped when she finally got a good look at her bed, "Oh my fucking god. M-My bed frame."
Now she knew why her bed felt lopsided when she woke up. Her bed frame was broken. On of the legs had completely broken off because of their activities they did the night before.
She had sex for the first time in a year...and she broke her bed frame.
Lola's head pounded. What type of freaky shit did they do last night to the point where they broke the bed frame?
Maybe any other time she'd think it was funny she broke her bed by having sex off all things but it wasn't funny when she remembered she would have to be the one to figure out how to pay for another one.
"Shit," Lola swore, groaning, "we broke the bed frame."
Elijah walked over next to her to see the damage, "Ah, yes. It would seem we did." His lip quirked a bit as of he found it funny but Lola didn't find funny one bit.
"I'm not gonna have the money to replace that for at least a year," she muttered to herself, "fuck.." she rubbed her forehead. She shook her head. "Unless I use the money in savings but..."
Elijah frowned, "I see," he said, "you don't have money to attain a new bed frame."
"No, I don't, I'm broke as hell," Lola muttered, rubbing a hand over her face. "Fucking great um—"
There was more banging on the door, "LOLA! We're gonna be late!"
"You need to leave!" Lola blurted out, "L-Like now! My sister cannot see you!" She looked around her room frantically until she spotted her window. Their house was only one floor level and Lola's room happened to have a window leading to their backyard. "The window!" Lola pried open the window. "Look, this was great...uh..really, really great, and uh—"
"I enjoyed myself also."
Lola blushed, "Right...right but...you gotta go," she gestured towards the open window.
Elijah eyed the window before turning his gaze towards Lola as if asking 'are you serious?' and Lola nodded.
There was no way Lola was going to let her one night stand walk out of here with Bonnie here. She didn't want her sister to know she had a sex life at all, Bonnie grew up seeing Lola as a mom who wanted to know that their mom had a sex life even if Lola's was practically non existent.
Elijah did as Lola told and climbed out the window though he did look a bit ridiculous because of his suit. Before Elijah left he stared at Lola for a while and a small smile, "I will see you later then...Loretta."
Lola flushed, "Hey, don't call me—" he was already walking away and Lola sighed, "that."
"LOLA!"
"Oh for fucks sake...I'm coming!"
THE CAR RIDE TO BONNIE'S SCHOOL WAS A BIT CHATIC.
Lola had barely had time to finish brushing her teeth before Bonnie was physically pushing her out the door of their house and into the car. Then Lola had pulled over to McDonald's to grab Bonnie breakfast ignoring her own growling stomach and gave Bonnie the change for lunch money since she wasn't able to pack her lunch that morning.
Usually Lola was on top of her game in the morning. Most mornings, she got up, got dressed for work, fixed Bonnie breakfast and pack her lunch and she would be out the door before seven. But she wasn't expecting Bonnie to be home today.
"Oh my god," Bonnie muttered watching as Lola nearly crashed into another car. "We're gonna die."
"We're not gonna die," Lola said ignoring a car honking at her am when she nearly crashed into the back of the their car, "...I think."
"I don't know how you got your license," Bonnie added.
"Okay, I'm driving skills aren't that bad," Lola protested wincing when a car honked at her. "...sometimes."
Bonnie sighed but double checked to make sure her seatbelt was on.
"So, Elena's boyfriend came over to her house last night that's why you came home?" Lola asked. "What's his name Steven or something?"
"Stefan," Bonnie corrected, "But...yeah. I just don't like like him that much...he rubs me the wrong way."
Lola narrowed her eyes, "Did...did he do some shit to you or something? Bonnie, did he hurt you?"
"No, no," Bonnie said quickly, "I just...I don't like him is all."
"If you say so," Lola muttered. "Hey...are you, like, doing okay?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," Lola sighed, "You've just been distant from me...I just...I don't know. I feel like your keeping something from me."
Lola had been noticing strange things about Bonnie. Like how Bonnie would get home later at night than usual (which forced Lola to give her a curfew), and she would give vague answers whenever Lola asked what she and Elena had plans to do. It had only started a couples months ago before their Grams passed away.
"Aww," Bonnie said teasingly, "Are you worried about little old me?"
Lola rolled her eyes, "Well, yeah."
"I'm...I'm okay," Bonnie told her, "Nothing is happen, I promise. I'm just still...digesting Grams death I guess."
Later, Bonnie knew she would feel guilty about using Grams's death as an excuse but what was she supposed to say. 'Sorry, Lola, I'm just busy hanging out with my slightly suicidal best friend and her vampire boyfriend oh, and by the way we come from a long line of witches' Lola would look at her like she was crazy. Bonnie thought Lola already enough on her plate the last thing she needed was to have her life completely turned upside down.
"Oh," Lola muttered. "I get that. How's Caroline?"
"She'll live," Bonnie replied. "Hey, are you coming to the carnival tonight, you have the night off right?"
Lola winced. She had completely forgotten about Bonnie's school carnival. It was supposed to help raise money for the school.
"I...I don't know," Lola muttered, "I don't think I'm gonna take tonight off, I may pull another shift."
Normally Lola would spend her days off sleeping in and maybe watch some trashy tv show but with her bed frame now being broken and the bills due soon she didn't think she could afford not pulling another shift at the dinner. Unless she used her savings which Lola was desperately trying not to take money out of.
Her savings money was the money she was trying to save for law school. And law school and even college in general was expensive. Lola had already gotten her G.E.D. last year (she had to drop out of high school to get a second job) and now she wanted to go to college but she knew she'd have to wait until Bonnie graduated and moved out to even consider applying.
"You should think about," Bonnie said, "Caroline planned it so you know it's gonna be good." Just as she said that Lola pulled her car into the parking lot of Bonnie's school.
Lola paused, "I'll think about it," she promised. She leaned over and kissed Bonnie's cheek, "Have a good day. I love you."
Bonnie smiled as she opened to car door, "I love you too."
Right before Bonnie closed the door, Lola shouted, "And remember—"
Bonnie rolled her eyes, "Make good choices," she finished, "I know."
"YOU'RE LATE," Tiana, Lola's boss and the dinner's owner, said flatly.
"I know, I'm sorry," Lola blurted quickly rushing to put on her apron. "I—"
"I don't want to hear excuses," Tiana said with a harsh glare, "Get to work or you're fired," she added before strutting away.
Lola sighed, "Right," she muttered.
"Hey," Carly said popping up from behind her. She smirked. "Long night."
Lola blushed, "You know it was."
"How was it?"
"I..." Lola looked around to make sure no one was listening. "We broke the bed frame," she hissed quietly.
Carly eyes widened, "You nasty slut."
Lola rolled eyes, "It was good...like really, really good..." she trailed off.
"Better than Mason Lockwood?"
Lola frowned at the mention of her ex-boyfriend, "Yeah...I mean, Mason wasn't bad or anything we just—" she started to ramble.
"Relax, the guy isn't even here," Carly rolled her eyes, "you know he's in town right."
"I...no...I didn't," Lola said quietly. She groaned, "I hope I don't run into him," she muttered. But knowing how small Mystic Falls was she probably would. "He probably still hates me."
"He's such a jackass," Carly said, "he shouldn't hate you for doing something you chose to do to your body."
Lola swallowed, "he was just hurt," Lola muttered, "I should've told him about...you know...before I decided to do it not after I got a—"
Carly frowned, "Lola, you know you didn't do anything wrong, right?" She asked raising a brow. "I mean, you were like sixteen? Eighteen? Nobody that age should be—"
"Can we not talk about it?" Lola asked desperately, "Please, I—"
"BENNETT!"
Lola whirled around only to find Ms.Tina walking towards them with a bouquet in her hands. "Yes?"
Me.Tina thrusted the flowers in her direction, "These are for you," she scowled, "Who ever sent these make sure they don't send you stuff her again, alright? This isn't a mailing service." Before Lola could reply Ms.Tina turned around and walked off.
Lola frowned eyeing the bouquet of pink roses. She picked up the note attached. Carly leaned over her shoulder nosily.
Dear Loretta,
It was a great pleasure to be in your company last night. I hope to see you again. I also apologize for the bed frame, I hope the check attached will suffice.
—Elijah
On the note there was also a handwritten number attached. Lola turned the note around and her jaw dropped.
Attached to the back of the note was a handwritten check for a thousand dollars. That was way more money than she needed for a bed frame. She could probably use the left over money for her college savings.
"Oh my god," Lola muttered.
"He gave you his number and a check for a thousand dollars," Carly said faintly, "You have to call him or I will."
"You aren't even into guys."
"I'm not into guys but I am into money."
Lola shook her head, "I'll think about it." She glanced at the flowers again and her lips twitched.
Elijah, Huh.
