TW!: MENTIONS OF PAST ABORTION

"I'M DROPPING OUT," Bonnie said dramatically, leaning her head against the kitchen table.

"No the fuck you're not," Lola said immediately, coming out of the kitchen with a apron on. She had been making dinner. She sat down across from Bonnie. "What's wrong?" She asked.

Bonnie didn't verbally answer, instead she just pushed a piece of paper towards Lola. Lola flipped the piece of paper around only to find it filled with unanswered Calculus problems.

Lola raised a brow, "I don't see the problem."

"I don't understand any of this," Bonnie groaned, rubbing a hand over her face.

"Isn't you're teacher supposed to teach you this?" Lola asked.

"He doesn't know how to teach, he just reads out of a book," Bonnie muttered.

Lola sighed and glanced at the paper, "The answer to this is 5.2," she pointed to another problem, "this is 19."

Bonnie looked at her with wide eyes, "How the hell did you do that?"

"Language."

Bonnie rolled her eyes.

Lola shrugged, "it's basic math, I just did it in my head. I was in high school once before, I wasn't always a drop out."

"Oh, right," Bonnie said, "I forgot you're a genius."

Lola flushed, "I'm not a genius," she muttered. "But I will help you."

"Really?"

Lola looked her like she was stupid, "Of course, I wouldn't I help you?" She asked.

Bonnie shook her head, "Sorry," she replied, "Oh shit I almost forgot—"

"Language."

Bonnie rolled her eyes, "Jenna is having a barbecue at her house tomorrow, do you wanna come?"

"Whose Jenna again?" Lola asked, scratching her head.

Unlike most people of Mystic Falls, Lola didn't keep track of everyone who came to town. First, she didn't think it was any of her business. Second, Lola didn't have the time to pay attention to anyone who wasn't Bonnie. Between work and taking care of Bonnie Lola didn't have the time to care.

Bonnie raised a brow, "Elena's aunt, the one who took her and Jeremy in after her parents died. I've talked to you about her before."

Truthfully, Lola didn't pay much attention when Bonnie talked about her friends. Unless it was juicy gossip Lola didn't really care.

"Ohhhh," Lola muttered, "Okay, now I remember...I don't know if I can, I've got work and stuff."

"It's on Friday, you're off," Bonnie pointed out and Lola sighed. "Please, you never go out."

"I do so go out."

Bonnie raised a brow, "Since when?"

Lola bit her tongue. She hadn't told Bonnie about her finding a new...friend (?) in Elijah. She shared everything with Bonnie but...Lola just wanted to keep one thing to herself.

Lola sighed, "Alright...I'll go."

Bonnie clapped her hands, "Yes!"

Lola rolled her eyes, "Enough talking, let's get down to business to defeat calculus," she said gesturing to Bonnie's homework and Bonnie groaned loudly.

TRUE TO HER WORD, LOLA AND BONNIE ARRIVED AT THE GILBERT HOUSE. They ended up walking to Elena's house since they only lived a couple blocks away.

"I haven't been here in forever," Lola muttered as Bonnie rang the doorbell. She rubbed her arm feeling a bit insecure.

Lola just hoped she wasn't underdressed. She hadn't been to a party of any kind in years and hoped her jeans and graphic tee-shirt was enough.

"You look fine," Bonnie replied, noticing Lola's shifting.

"Who did you say was coming again?" Lola asked.

"Elena, Caroline," Bonnie started to list off, "Stefan, Jenna's boyfriend Alaric—"

"Wait, you're history teacher Alaric? Mr.Saltzman?" Lola asked quickly.

Lola had met Alaric a while ago at Bonnie's parent-teacher conference. She didn't think too much about him. He tried to chat with her but Lola had gotten straight to the point and asked about Bonnie's grades and behavior in class because she had a shift right after.

Bonnie nodded, "Yeah, him and—"

The door opened and standing on the other side was a tall pale skinned man. He had dark shaggy hair, and pale blue eyes and a half-smile on his face.

"Damon," Bonnie said slightly surprised. "I didn't know you were coming."

Damon smirked, "Bon-Bon."

Lola raised a brow, "You know him?" She asked, her tone a bit threatening.

There was no way in hell Lola would be okay with Bonnie hanging out around a grown ass man when she was only seventeen.

Quickly catching on to Lola's tone Bonnie quickly said, "He's Stefan's older brother, I don't know him that well but I've met him before."

Lola relaxed a bit, "Oh," she muttered.

Bonnie watched with narrow eyes as Damon held out his hand, "Damon Salvatore, and you must be?"

Lola quickly shook his hand, "Uh, I'm Lola," she said awkwardly.

"Lola Bennett," Bonnie corrected quickly, "my sister," she hissed a bit at him.

Damon's eyebrows raised, "Oh, really. Witchy, never mentioned having a sister...especially not one as beautiful as yourself."

Normally someone calling her beautiful would make Lola blush but all she could focus on was the name he called her sister.

"Witchy?" Lola asked lowly, "Why are you calling her witchy? Is that some shitty insult?" She asked Bonnie annoyed.

"No," Bonnie said through grit teeth as she glared at Damon, "It's just a stupid nickname. Can we come in now?"

Still smirking, Damon sidestepped to let them through. As they walked down the hall Lola could feel his stare burning into her back uncomfortably.

"Lola Bennett, oh my god is that you?"

Lola frowned and turned around only to see the woman with pale skin and blonde hair. "You must be Jenna?"

"Oh shit, you must not remember me," Jenna quickly held out her hand to shake, "I'm Jenna Summers, I took AP Cal with you in school. I always wondered what happened to you. You work at that restaurant right?"

Lola grimaced, "Yeah...I do," she muttered.

God, never in her entire life did she feel more like a failure until now.

Just when she thought nothing could get worst a very familiar voice came from behind her:

"Hey, I found the shot glasses...Lola?"

Lola wanted to throw up. Hell, she wanted to die because in front of her was her ex-boyfriend who she hadn't seen in years: Mason Lockwood.

Mason hadn't changed much since high school. He was taller and more muscular, he had grown his curly hair out a bit but...he was still the same. Just looking at him made Lola want to cry.

He seemed surprised to see her too because he nearly dropped the shot glasses in his hands. "U-Uh, hey...it's been a while, huh."

Lola's throat felt dry and she found her mouth unable to form words. Her heartbeat felt hard against her chest like a drum. Her palms suddenly felt sweat and her head started to pound. Lola thought she was going to faint.

How could he just stand there and say hi? How could he just stand there and act like he never called her a murderer?

The smirk slid off of Damon's lips, "You two know each other?"

Mason nodded, "Yeah..we have history. How have you been?"

Tears filled Lola's eyes, "I-I need to go," her voice cracked, she turned to Bonnie, "I-I need to leave right now. Will you be okay here by yourself?"

Bonnie frowned, "Lola, are you—"

"Bonnie," Lola said, her voice sounding strained, "I really need a yes or no answer like right now. I-I can't be here right now."

I can't be around him.

Bonnie hesitated, "I'll be fine."

"Sorry to leave so soon but I need to go," Lola said awkwardly, grabbing her purse, "now. I...I just remembered I have a shift for work."

Mason frowned, "Wait, Lola, I've really been meaning to—"

"Thank you for having me," Lola flashed Jenna a painfully fake smile and practically flew out of the front door.

SURPRISINGLY, LOLA DIDN'T HAVE A PANIC ATTACK.

Instead she found herself at Mystic Falls local liquor store with tear stained cheeks. It was a bit early to be trying to drink but Lola didn't care.

"That stupid motherfucker," Lola grumbled, "How could he just—urgh!"

She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand as she scanned for a cheap bottle of vodka to drink away her anxiety when she heard someone calling her name.

"Lola?"

Lola sniffed and turned around to see Elijah. He looked the same as always in his too fancy suit and loafers.

"Hey," she cringed at the way her voice cracked. "I mean...um...hi. What are you doing here?"

Elijah held up a extremely expensive looking bottle of bourbon. He frowned, "Are you alright?" He asked gently.

She let out a bitter laugh, "Not really," she muttered, "But it's fine...I'll deal with it. I always do."

"What happened?"

Lola shrugged, "Just the usual running into my ex-boyfriend and now I'm gonna just," she held up her own cheap bottle of vodka, "drink my sorrows away. It's my day off so why not spend it wasted off my ass."

"Ex-boyfriend?" Elijah said slowly like it was hard to form the words.

Lola nodded, "And now I'm going to get drunk and maybe cry a bit. It depends on how I feel."

"Ah," Elijah nodded, "How would you feel about participating in a better solution?"

"I don't know what's better than what I was already planning to do. Getting drunk sounds like a good idea."

"How would you feel about getting some dinner together?"

And as if on cue Lola's stomach rumbled. She sighed, "I guess some food wouldn't hurt."

ELIJAH TRIED TO TAKE LOLA TO SOME FANCY RESTAURANT. Key word: tried. As soon as he pulled into the parking lot of some fancy French restaurant Lola immediately demanded that they went somewhere else to eat because he seemed to have forgotten Lola was not rich.

Eventually he did ask her where they should eat and Lola gave him the directions. They needed up on a park bench eating chilly cheese dogs from a food truck. Well it was more like Lola was eating a chilly cheese dog because Elijah—

"You've never had a hotdog before?" Lola asked surprised, taking a less than ladylike bite out of her hotdog.

Elijah grimaced as he stared at the greasy food in his hand, "I believe I have not."

"How have you never hotdog before?" Lola asked, "That has to be impossible. Everyone has had to eaten one at least once in their lives."

"Well I suppose I'm part of the small percentage of people who have not," Elijah told her, distastefully eyeing his hotdog. He was genuinely surprised Lola was able to talk him into buying this.

Lola chewed loudly, "Oh, right. You only eat rich people food, right?"

"I prefer to call it refine dining," Elijah told her, his lips forming into a small smile.

Lola rolled her eyes, "Here," she picked up the end of Elijah's hotdog with a napkin and held it up towards his lips. "Just try at least one bite and if you do end up liking it you owe me a favor."

"And if I don't enjoy eating this...food," he said the last part almost as a question, "what do I receive."

Lola shrugged, "I guess if You don't like it then I'll owe you a favor. Just try it, please, for me."

Elijah eyed the hotdog before eyeing Lola's face and sighing. After a moment of hesitation he leaned forward and took a small bite off the end. Instead of spitting it out he made a thoughtful humming sound.

Feeling victorious, Lola smiled, "Not that bad right?" She asked, putting his food back on his plate.

"It is...adequate," he said after a moment and taking another bit.

Lola smiled widely and Elijah couldn't help but give a small smile back.

"You know I just realized I don't know a lot about you," Lola told him, "We should play twenty questions?"

"Twenty questions?"

Lola nodded, "Yeah, I ask you a question then you ask me a question. But when you answer each question you have to be honest. You don't have to answer any questions you don't want to answer though."

Elijah paused, "...Okay, I'll participate."

Slightly surprised he's agreed, Lola cleared her throat, "Okay...um. What's your favorite color?"

He eyed her, "It was previously red but I have find myself lately favoring green. And yourself?"

"Pink," Lola replied immediately, "What's one thing you like about me? And if you don't like anything about me what do you hate about me?"

Elijah looked at her like the idea of disliking anything about her was ridiculous, "I like your rambling...I find it endearing. What were you first thoughts when you met me?"

Lola blushed a bit as she took a sip of her soda. She always found her rambling annoying and thought other people would be annoyed by it too but clearly Elijah didn't mind it.

"I thought you were handsome and that you had a nice head of hair," Lola told him honestly with dark blush covering her face ignoring Elijah's amused smile. "...I also thought your shoes probably costed more than my bills and house mortgage."

Elijah glanced at his shoes, "There is a slight possibility they do," he told her and Lola laughed.

"What we're your siblings like?" She asked.

"Well...there is Finn, he is not the biggest fan of our family and chooses to distance himself from us...Niklaus who suffers from a bad temper, Kol who is reckless and Rebekah who is spoiled but sweet," he said fondly. "And you? What's your sister like?"

A warm feeling filled Lola's heart, "Bonnie is...everything. She's smart and so sweet. She can be a bit of a smartass but I think she gets it from me. She's a good person...Sometimes I think I didn't do a good job raising her, I thought maybe my mom or dad would've been better but I think she turned out to be an okay kid."

"From the way you speak of her," Elijah started to say, "I would say you did a excellent job raising her."

"Really?"

The fact he thought she did a good job surprised Lola. In the back of her mind Lola always thought Bonnie would have been better off raised by one of their parents. Not with Lola who could barely pay the bills on time.

He nodded, "From what you speak about her. I can tell you did a wonderful job raising her."

Lola blushed, "Oh, thanks," she muttered. She cleared her throat, "Moving on. How old are you?" She asked. "Sorry if that's a rude question. I just realized I've been hanging out with you all this time without even knowing you're age."

Elijah briefly froze before taking a sip of his water, "How old do you think I am?"

Lola eyed him. Elijah looked not much older than her. "Like...twenty-four."

Elijah smiled a bit, "I'm twenty-seven."

Lola shrugged, "Damn, I was close."

"Can I ask a more..." Elijah hesitated, "personal question?"

"Sure?"

"Earlier you were crying over your ex-boyfriend," He started to say and Lola froze. "What exactly happened today?"

Lola swallowed, "Um...back in high school before I dropped out...I dated Mason Lockwood my freshman year.," She paused, "I...everyone who we knew at the time was doing it so we decide to have sex. My parents weren't around and Mason's parents never payed him any attention, he was practically raised by his nanny. So neither of us were educated on how important safe sex was. A-After a couple of times of us doing it... I got pregnant when I fifteen."

She looked up expecting to see a judgmental look on Elijah's face but his face remained stoic. She had no idea what he was thinking.

"I...I couldn't take care of a baby. I could barely take care of myself and I had Bonnie I had to take care of. I wasn't finically stable or even old enough to be in charge of a baby so...I talked to my grandma and I-I got an abortion. I decided to tell Mason a week after. He was furious," her voice cracked, "He told me he should've been apart of my decision and that it was his baby that I killed. He called me a murderer and broke up with me. I mean...sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I didn't get an abortion but...I don't regret what I did. I know I made the right decision. But seeing him again after all those years...I just couldn't..."

Telling Elijah about her abortion felt like a weight off her shoulders. Lola never talked about her abortion with anyone. The only people she had ever told was Carly, not even Bonnie knew about it.

"I see," there was a dark edge to Elijah's voice, "Would you like for me to take care of him?"

"Take care of...no, no," Lola quickly shook her head, "He...I don't want you to go through any trouble for me and Mason...despite what he said before that when we were together he wasn't that bad."

The anger didn't disappear from his face, "Was he good to you?" But based on his voice it seemed like he already had decided his feelings about Mason.

Lola scratched her head, "I mean before I told him he was an okay boyfriend. Usually, I had to plan our dates and stuff, and sometimes I had to make the first move but he was never mean to me or anything before."

"You should date a man who's willing to put in effort for you," Elijah told her, "not someone who makes you wonder if you should make the first move."

Lola's breath hitched.

"And you deserve better than how he treated you during that time in your life. You were only a mere child and had to go through that process alone. I apologize that you had to go through that experience by yourself."

Lola's eyes filled with tears, "You don't need to apologize," she told him, wiping her tears with the back of her wrist. "You didn't do anything wrong."

Elijah reached in the pocket of his suit and pulled out a handkerchief, "I'm aware," he handed it to Lola who quickly wiped her eyes, "but someone needed too."

Lola eyed him and sniffed, "You know something, Elijah?"

"Hmm?"

"You're a good person," Lola told him.

His eyes widened and Lola gave him a small smile.

Elijah had been described as a lot of things but never in his long life had he ever heard someone call him a good person. It felt...nice.

Lola leaned over and planted a soft kiss on his cheek, "Thank you."

Elijah couldn't help but touch the area on his cheek where she kissed, "What for?,"

"For comforting me, for talking to me," Lola smiled a bit, "Thank you for...just being you."
