Word of my upcoming fight with Midorya had seemed to spread as fast as wildfire. Several people had the topic fresh on their lips as I passed by them. They'd dull their conversation down to a whisper, and follow me with their eyes.
"That's her. The one that's fighting Midorya."
"Think she can beat him?"
"I don't know. Midorya knows his stuff. She better be ready."
Kaminari sighed audibly from next to me.
"Is everything okay?"
He shook his head sadly.
"You still don't believe I can beat Midoriya, do you?"
"It's not that I don't, but I don't think you know what you're up against."
I put my hands on the sides of his face, and his golden eyes lit up.
"I know you're worried, but I'll be okay. I swear."
He smiled weakly, and squeezed my hand. It was hard to be confident for the both of us, but I knew if I doubted myself in the slightest that it would show.
"Does Jiro hate me?" I asked, attempting to change the subject.
He looked over at me with confusion plastered on his face.
"Why would she?"
I shrugged, and plucked a stray piece of grass out of the ground.
"Maybe because she thinks I stole you?"
He blinked, and then laughed from the pit of his stomach.
"You stole me?"
I hid my face so he wouldn't see the spreading warmth on my cheeks.
"Miya, you didn't steal me. Our relationship wasn't great before you showed up. We fought, we argued, shit was going downhill before I met you. We were long broken up before you came around, honey."
I peeked out at him, and he was laying on his back. He had his arms behind his head, and he was looking up at the sky.
"She doesn't hate you."
I spread my wings out, and nuzzled in the grass next to him.
"If you say so."
He propped himself up on his arm.
"Miya?"
"Hmm?
"Are you worried?"
It was my turn to prop myself up on my arm.
"About what?"
His eyes had a sad look about them.
"The fight." he muttered.
I reached out, and took his hand. The warm, tingly electricity made me smile.
"As long as I look out, and see you standing there I'll have all of the confidence in the world."
He wrapped his fingers around my hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze. I looked over at him, and saw him trying to discreetly hide the blush that was spreading over his cheeks.
"Enjoying ourselves, are we?"
Mr. Aizawa stood in front of us. His arms were crossed, and his eyes were bloodshot. His hair, however, wasn't in his face like it had been the last few days. It was pulled back, and exposed both of his eyes.
"You," he pointed at me, "need to report to Principal Nezu's office immediately."
He kept his eyes on me as I stood.
"Is there any special reason-"
"I didn't care to ask, but I would get there fast. He seemed very anxious to meet with you. I'll be escorting you since you no longer have that device strapped to your wrist. It seems you don't have his full trust yet."
"Goody." I mumbled under my breath.
I waved quickly to Kaminari, and then followed closely behind Aizawa. His eyes stayed forward, and his mouth stayed closed as we walked.
"Are you prepared for your match against Midoriya?" he asked after several silent minutes.
"You know about that?"
"Of course," he looked back at me, "who do you think suggested it to Nezu?"
"So, forcing me to fight a classmate is the first thing that could have come to mind?"
He half smiled as he turned his head back.
"Seeing your abilities in action is the only way to quell my concerns."
I rolled my eyes.
"Why Midoriya?"
"Bakugo would have been too eager to harm you, and I assumed there would be no point in having you fight Kaminari. Midoriya has shown a significant amount of growth as of late. I'm eager to see how he handles himself, and his Quirk."
I chuckled.
"And pitting us against each other is a good way to test that?"
"Precisely."
The remaining time spent walking to Nezu's office was silent. He'd occasionally look back at me out of the corner of his eye, and then continue looking forward.
"Miya."
He let his hand linger on the knob of Principal Nezu's office door. I turned my head as he looked at me.
"When we get in there, please keep an open mind."
"Keep an open mind about what?"
He twisted the doorknob, and pushed the door open.
"Ah, Suzume! It's lovely to see you again."
The little white creature bowed in my direction. A knock came at the door, and Nezu's ears perked up.
"Come in, Hatsume!"
An excitable girl with pink hair, and odd eyes sprang into the room carrying what looked like a large black suitcase. She spotted me, and broke into a large smile.
"Suzume, this is Mei Hatsume. She's in class 1-H which happens to be the Department of Support." Nezu said.
"I make all of the super cute, awesome, adorable babies for the other students."
"Babies?" I asked, quizzically.
Nezu stifled a laugh, and directed his attention at the suitcase on the table.
"Hatsume has made over 150 hero support items, as well as assisted the other students with developing their hero outfits. As a matter of fact," he motioned towards the suitcase, "she has something to share with you."
Hatsume squealed happily, and pressed the metallic silver buttons on the sides of the suitcase. The top opened with a pop, and she pulled out a long, black piece of cloth.
"I've been working on this all week. What do you think, Suzume?"
When she turned the cloth around it felt as if someone had punched me in the stomach. In her arms was the most beautiful black dress I'd ever seen. It was short, but flowy, and it seemed to shimmer in the dim lighting of Nezu's office.
"This is," I swallowed, "for me?"
"This is your hero outfit. You'll be debuting it during your match with Mr. Midoriya."
Hatsume shifted excitedly in her chair.
"The material is lightweight, and breathable so you'll be comfortable even in the hottest weather. There's two holes in the back for your wings, and it's stretchy because I wasn't exactly sure how big your wings are."
She leaned back in her chair to try to get a better look.
"This," she pulled out a long, ribbon like piece of material, "is one of my super special babies. It's an arm band I designed to measure the negative side effect of your Quirk. Once it gets a feel for you it'll help your body distribute the right amount of feathers without you feeling as much pain as you normally do."
She stood, and wrapped the band around my arm.
"Your winter gear comes with thermal leggings, and a shawl to keep you nice and warm. I can always make upgrades where they're needed. Just come down to Hero Support, and look for me."
"Th-thank you, Hatsume."
She smiled, and then snapped her fingers.
"Here."
She handed me a thin piece of black ribbon, and I examined it.
"Thanks for the," I held it up in front of my eyes, "string."
She clutched at her stomach while she laughed.
"It's not a string, silly girl. It's a smart hair accessory. It will hold any hairstyle you choose without slipping. It's baby number 153. One of my absolute favorites."
I pointed to the band on my arm.
"I thought this was-"
"They're all my favorites! So precious, and adorable! They're all my babies!" she exclaimed.
In the back of my mind I secretly hoped that this would be my last meeting with Mei Hatsume.
