In a motel room somewhere in the dark recesses of the city, Roman Torchwick sat in an armchair as he watched yesterday's news. Near the vanity doing her makeup is a small woman in the three colors of her namesake.
Roman growled at the news reporter misreading his villain name. "Can't these people read?" Neopolitan shrugged silently. Roman takes out a fresh cigar and placed it in his mouth. He then pulls out a lighter and flicked it on. Just as he was about to light the cigar, there is a knock at the door.
"What?"
"The candlelight burns a brilliant orange," a gruff voice answered. Roman glances over at Neo, who glances back. Roman flicks his lighter off.
"Come in," he said. The door opens and several individuals entered the small room. Each person varied on sizes and Quirk, such a large lizard looking man. Neo moved from the vanity to stand close to Roman.
A woman with brown spots around her shoulders and neck moved forward. "You the Wicked Gentleman?"
"Wicker," Roman corrected irritably. "Seriously. I thought they teach you English in high school."
The woman chose to ignore the comment. "We heard from the streets that you're looking for hired hands for an operation."
"Oh, goodie. Folks with actual back bone. At least, I hope. Well, it's better than none at all. Now, if you all would just have a seat over there, I –"
"Yeah, and why should we listen to you?" the lizard man grunted. "You don't think we've watched the news, Quirkless? We came here to make the hero society tremble. How would a Quirkless wimp like you do anything?"
Neo's eyes changed from their normal colors (pale pink/brown) to white/brown as she looked at the lizard with indignation. She was about to move her parasol when Roman stopped her.
"I'm starting to wonder if having a Quirk Factor leads to a deterioration of braincells," he said mockingly. "Of course, that doesn't include you, Neo. You are a diamond among lumps of coal." Neo flashes him a smile and wink, her eyes has changed back to their original color.
"Whaddyou say, Quirkless freak?" the lizard man growled angrily. He moves to swipe at Roman with his claws. The orange haired man smirked as he easily dodge the attack with a twirl before shoving the handle end of his cane against the assailant's throat.
"Ho ho, look at that. Someone's a little big for their breeches," Roman said merrily. "Funny for you to say that when just decades ago, your kind were the ones called freaks." His jovial expression turns dark "Now, listen here, snakeskin. In this day and age, all that matters is power. Which is to be expected in this superhuman society. However, I have noticed something. The big wigs up on top of the food chain certainly love their muscle heads and pyromaniacs that go for the big prizes that they fail to look for the termites that lurk in the crevices of this flawed society. One termite isn't enough to break a foundation, but an infestation can. And an employer of mine plan to do just that. And they hired me to look for those termites." Roman lowers his cane down and the lizard man sighs in relief. It was short lived, however. Roman swiftly flips his cane around shoves the other end against his throat. "Yes, I am Quirkless, but don't you dare underestimate my abilities. I may not have fangs or claws or whatever else, but what I do have is what made humans the true apex predators pre-Quirk." Lizard Man felt the tip pressing harder. Why down does it feel like there is an opening? It's almost like the end of…the barrel of a gun. "Have I made myself clear?"
"I-I understand," Lizard Man wheezed.
"Good," Roman smirked. He moves away and the Lizard Man could finally take a breath. "Now that we are all on the same page, be ready for the heist I have in mind. It's more of a test run, really, to see if you lot are up to snuff. So, please, don't embarrass yourselves."
"Yes, sir!" the criminals exclaimed. The move around the room to find a good seating spot.
Roman sighs. "Just can't find good help these days."
In his single bound, All Might made his way over to the Emerald Bridge. The suspension bridge was given the name from the green lights that decorate the wires and towers. The lights are hardly seen during the day, but as the sun sets and the night draws near, the beautiful lights of green shine gloriously. The middle tower was the most intricate, called Beacon Tower. The tower was surmounted by a number of green spheres or lights as well as an intricate clockwork mechanism consisting of many interlocking cogs and gears.
The hero lands on the circular balcony located near the top, just outside of an old friend's office. Said friend is at his desk, his large swivel chair is obscuring All Might's vision towards him. He's probably in the middle of paperwork, though All Might knew that he would always find time for visitors. The No. 1 Hero taps rhythmically on the glass. The other man paused, and a knowing smile had formed. With a light push of his foot against the marble floor, he swerves around.
"Little late for a visit. Don't you think," the man smiles, "Toshinori Yagi?" Despite his grey hair and the age lines around his eyes, it's difficult to believe that he is in his early 50s.
All Might gave hardy laugh as he opened the glass door and walks in. "It's been a long time. Hasn't it, Ozpin?"
"Indeed, it has," Ozpin said as he rises from his chair. He walks over to a table with a coffee machine and several mugs. "Care for a cup of coffee?"
"Decaf. If you have any."
"That is blasphemy, but this is for you. Coming right up."
A small silence fell as Ozpin prepared the coffee machine, so All Might decides to make conversation. "Where's Glynda?
"She's out on patrol."
"Ah. I see."
Another bit of silence, save for the tick-tock of the cogs and gears, fell between the two and All Might already started get too fidgety his leg started shaking. Ozpin noticed this and turned around. "You know you don't have to be in that form while you're alone with me. Don't spend your energy on my account. You are on a time limit."
There was a pause, a beat, before All Might reverts to his true form in a puff of smoke. He wheezed and cough.
"Right. Sorry about that."
Ozpin smiles as he walked over and gives him the decaf. "There is nothing to apologize for."
"Right, so—…thank you." He takes a sip of the coffee. "So…what's life like as UA's vice principal?"
"Oh, exhilarating, in more ways than one. Inspiring young minds, encouraging them on their chosen paths, sharing stories with other teachers over a nice cup of coffee…Though the paperwork I could do without," Ozpin motions over to the papers at his desk. "But, it grants me the greatest reward of watching the next generation of heroes go out into the world."
"You make it sound more complicated than it needed to be," Toshinori mused, rubbing the back of his neck.
Ozpin chuckled. "Oh, you'll understand one day as well, Toshinori, once you start teaching there."
Toshinori gave a watery smile. "Heh…yeah. I don't think I can be a great teacher. Saving people and catching the bad guys, that I can do. But…teaching? I'm sure Gran Torino would think its a bad idea." Just because Toshinori has above average intelligence, it doesn't grant him teaching skills. In fact, Gran Torino had said that the only living being that Toshinori could teach properly is a brain-dead monkey.
"I'm sure you'll do fine. Especially if you had been watching Glynda's lectures. You have been watching them, yes?"
"Yes, I have. But her brand of teaching the hero course is…how do I put it…"
"Too stiff?" Ozpin smiled.
"I was gonna say boring, but yes," Toshinori nodded.
"That doesn't come out as a surprise. It's likely she's teaching what she had learned back at Shiketsu."
"I'm still curious why she's teaching at UA instead of Shiketsu."
"Whatever the reason may be, she too looks forward to your new teaching job. As is Qrow."
"Are they now?" Toshinori stares into his mug, seeing his sickly reflection in the dark liquid. "Then, that makes three people who has more faith in my teaching ability than me."
"Four."
The blonde hero raises a shadowed brow. "Four?" Ozpin puts a hand on Toshinori's shoulder.
"I have faith in you as well."
A genuine smile formed on Toshinori's face. "Thanks, Oz." He looks down again. "Still though…I'm a little worried. And right now, it's less about me teaching and more about…this." He waved his hand at himself. "One day, everyone – including my students – will see what I've become and lose their sense of peace. Their pillar. What if I mess up? What if I make a mistake?"
"Toshinori –"
"I can't afford to make any mistakes," Toshinori said seriously. "Not now. Not ever." Silence fell once more, the noise being the cogs that turn above them like a clock. It almost reminded Toshinori of his limited time.
"How is Achillea faring?" Ozpin asked suddenly.
Toshinori stared at him, perplex at the chance of conversation. "Young Nikos? She's doing fine. She's back at Might Tower, doing some work for me while I'm here. Why?"
"Does she know about your current condition?"
A pause. "…Yes. Not long after she became my sidekick. Hadn't had a choice, really." He and Achillea was chasing a villain. All Might went ahead to arrest the criminal. Just as he was about to grab him, his time was almost up, causing him to falter. The villain noticed this and was about to attack All Might before Achillea swooped in to knock him out. It was at that moment, he poofed out of his muscle form.
"And how did she react?" Toshinori grew curious of these questions.
"Good? She was surprised, but after that, she just…treated me normally." It was…weird, to say the least. Weird to Toshinori, anyway. His new sidekick, holding the incapacitated villain by the collar, stared at the emaciated form that is Toshinori Yagi, taking in how his Golden Age costume hung off his shoulders, practically drowning in it. She was expressionless, her vivid green eyes seem to stare straight into his soul. Toshinori had braced himself for a myriad of confused questions.
What happened next had left Toshinori stumped.
After a moment of silent shock, Achillea smiled and said how happy she is that he is okay. Toshinori was at a loss for words, as it wasn't what he was expecting. After confirming he didn't get injured, they contact the police and Achillea takes the criminal to them, explaining that All Might went back to patrolling. Afterwards, Toshinori meets when Achillea in his office at Might Tower and explained the situation. His true form, his injury, his fight with All for One…As soon as he was finished, he waited for Achillea's response. What Achillea said next stumped him again.
'No matter what you look like or what happened, you are still my hero, and I would like to continue working for you, All Might, if that is okay with you.'
Despite seeing what became of him, she still called him All Might.
Why?
"That's because you are still you," Ozpin smiled. "You are still All Might, a hero, and always will be."
Toshinori stared at him with shock. "Oz—"
"I won't lie and say that you won't be making mistakes, because you will. I know this because well you know." There was a look on Ozpin's face. It was gone too fast for Toshinori to read, however. "You will and you will learn from that mistake. We all slip up every once and a while, but we live and learn from them. You are no different. You may be the Symbol of Peace, but you are still human. Just like me, just like Qrow…and just like Summer."
"Oz…" Toshinori smiles. "What did I do to deserve a friend like you?
Ozpin smiles back. "It's getting late. You might need to hurry home."
"Yeah, you're right." He hands his friend the half empty mug. "Thanks for the coffee and…for listening."
"It's my pleasure, Toshinori. Remember what I said, and you'll do fine. And don't stress over looking for your successor. Slow down and focus on what needs to be done now. As a wise man once said 'Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.'"
"…You got that from a movie, didn't you?" Toshinori asked.
"I'm frankly surprised you knew that," Ozpin commented.
"I had a lot of catching up with the girls." A lot. Toshinori holds out a hand to Ozpin. "Have a good night."
"You too as well." Ozpin clasp his hand over Toshinori's. then, with no warning, Ozpin pulls Toshinori towards him and into a hug. It was…in a sense awkward. It was usually Toshinori who'd give big hugs due to his massive muscle form. But now, with how thin he is, he's easily wrapped in Ozpin's arms. A particular sight when comparing their heights: Toshinori's 220 cm vs Ozpin's 198. Getting over the awkwardness, Toshinori wraps an arm around Ozpin. It wasn't long. 5 seconds at most when they backed up. "Be careful on your way, friend."
"See you tomorrow," Toshinori said before heading for the elevator. Ozpin seats back in his desk to do his less than stellar paperwork. His eyes wonder back to Toshinori.
For whatever reason, Toshinori seems to have thought that, as the Symbol of Peace, he is not allowed to make a mistake, no matter how small and insignificant. While it was Toshinori's intention to get media coverage so that it would deter villains, Ozpin was starting to think that it may have caused a negative toll on Toshinori's psyches. That he has to be perfect, that All Might has to be infallible.
Ozpin prays that one day, Toshinori would learn that he is enough. That Toshinori is enough.
Just as Toshinori made it to the elevator, he paused. Ozpin noticed and looked up. "Toshinori?"
The blonde turned around slowly with an embarrassed expression. "Ha…I…forgot my keys at Tai's place…"
Even someone as smart and strong as Toshinori Yagi – All Might – are capable of mistakes.
Morning comes along and Ruby, fully dressed in her uniform, exits the house with Yang. "Wanna ride to Archam's Treat for breakfast?"
"I thought that you were gonna meet up with Mirio and Blake," Ruby said.
"I am. They're there too."
"Oh. Okay, then. Let me text Jaune that we're coming over."
"K."
After she sent the text, Ruby follows her sister to the shed where Yang's bike, nicknamed Bumblebee, resides. They noticed their father on their way there, climbing in the family van. Tai notices them and gets the window down.
"Yeah?" he asked.
"Going to work, dad?" Ruby asked.
"Yeah. After I give this to Toshinori," Tai said, showing the girls a set of keys.
"Aren't those to his apartment?" Yang asked. "Did he seriously forget it?"
"Yep, apparently he did," Tai said as he started the ignition.
'He forgot his own keys?' Ruby wondered.
"Then, where the hell did he stay last night?" Yang asked, worried. "He didn't get mugged, did he?"
"Toshinori? Oh, no. A guy like him can handle a mugger."
"Are you sure?" Ruby asked.
"Yes, Ruby. I'm sure," Tai reassured her. "Despite what had happened, Toshinori can take care of himself. As for where he is, he called me and told me he's with a friend."
Ruby was still worried but took her father's words. "If you say so…"
"Where are you two going at this hour?"
"Ruby and I are going to Archam's Treat for breakfast," Yang answered. "I can order something for you to pick up on your way back if you want."
"Nah, it's fine," Tai declined. "I might pick something up before I go out on patrol later."
"'Kay. Later, dad."
"Stay safe," Ruby said.
"I will. Have a great day at school, girls." His daughters watch as he drives around the dirt path and on to the road before resuming their trek to the shed.
"For someone who works super close to All Might, Uncle Toshi seems rather scatterbrained," Ruby said.
"Sound familiar?" Yang joked. Ruby slaps her arm playfully.
Yang pulls open the sheds doors to reveal her pride and joy, a yellow and black sports motorbike Yang affectionately called Bumblebee. Attached to the bike is a sidecar for any passengers not willing to hang on to Yang. Ruby was one of them and plops into the sidecar after plucking a red helmet from a worktable. Yang gave a sideways grin as Ruby take out her goggles and place them over her eyes.
"What's with that?" she asked.
"I plan on giving them a test run after school," Ruby said.
"Think it's a good idea? You could get in trouble."
"Not if I have a learner's permit, which I need to remind you that I do, and as long as I can test them in a place where there's not a lot of people," Ruby explained. "Sentaku Park seems like the best place since no one goes there anymore. Besides, all I'm gonna do is test to see if they can handle speed Quirks."
"Where is it? The park."
"A few blocks away from the other side of the Emerald Bridge."
"Whatever floats your boat, little sis," Yang said as she reached for her yellow helmet.
"Now, let's go! I'm hungry!" her sister exclaimed, bouncing in her seat.
"Okay, okay," Yang laughed.
Archam's Treat, sequestered near the Emerald Bridgem, is a mom-and-pop diner clearly modeled after American's 60s era retro diners, complete with checkerboard floors, pleather booths, cushioned swivel bar stools with a back, and various hero memorabilia. It is no surprise because the family owning the restaurant originated from the USA.
Despite being a family-owned establishment, it gained notoriety in the Patchi community and some of Musutafu near the Emerald Bridge because of its American cuisine which the food is made from the family's farm that is sure to fill up your stomach with modest portions and modest prices courtesy of co-owners Lucius and Prism Arc and excellent customer service from the diner's waitresses, the daughters of Lucius and Prism and older sisters of Jaune. Even some heroes have dined there after a hard day's work or early in the morning for a good jumpstart for the day thanks to their famous Heroic Breakfast Specials, breakfast meals of a balanced diet mixed with Prism's special ingredient.
Greeting the Xiao Long-Rose sisters is the oldest of the Arc daughters, Rosie, a woman nearing thirty. "Hey, Ms. Yang, Ms. Ruby."
"Hey, Rosie," Yang greeted.
"Good morning," greeted Ruby.
"You two already have a table waiting for you and breakfast should be out shortly," Rosie told them.
"Yeees! Thanks, Rosie!" thanked Yang.
"It's my pleasure~. You two enjoy yourselves!"
"Okay!" the sisters said together. They head over to a booth where they see Jaune and another blonde, large in stature in contrast with his Tintin face wearing the UA High uniform.
Ruby missed the vexed look on Yang's face as she greeted the boys. "Hey, Jaune. Hey, Mirio."
"Hey, Ruby," Jaune greeted.
"And a hello to you too, Rose!" Mirio greeted. "Cute goggles."
Ruby puff her cheeks in annoyance and sits next to Jaune as Yang sat with Mirio. "They are not cute! They're a work-in-progress!"
"All right, all right!" Mirio smiled.
"Where's Blake?" Yang asked him. "I thought she was gonna be here."
"She was," Jaune answered. "She was the first one here."
Mirio nodded. "That's right. And just when I arrived, she left."
"Did you know what happened before she left?" Ruby asked Jaune.
"I was cleaning the tables for my dad, so I wasn't paying much attention, but I think she got a text from someone. After that, she left."
"She looked like she was in a hurry. She even forgot her book." Mirio holds up the novel.
In the blink of an eye, Yang's lilac eyes changed to a heated red. "It was that fucking guy again, wasn't it?"
"Yang!" Ruby exclaimed.
"I don't know," Mirio said. His usually chipper look took a more serious tone. "But what I do know is that there is no use in getting mad over it. We've done everything we could for her and now it's up to her to make the right choice. If we intervene with contempt, then it would just make things worse."
Yang glared her red gaze at Mirio before submitting with a sigh. "Fine." The lilac return to her iris', though there was still a hint of red.
Jaune was confused. "Wait, what guy?"
Ruby was equally baffled. "Yeah, what are you guys talking about and what does it have to do with Blake?"
Yang sighs. "Don't worry about it."
"She's right," Mirio nodded. "You two should worry more about preparing for UA. I know that we just started this year, but it never hurts to be ready." And it is at that moment Rosie came with their food.
"Here you go! Heroic Breakfast Specials #3 and #5 for the UA students, a plate of strawberry pancakes for a Ms. Ruby, aaand a Jaune Special for our little man!" The woman pinches her kid brother's cheek, much to his annoyance.
"Knock it off, Rosie."
"Enjoy!"
"Thank you very much!"
The group of four put their focus on the food in front of them. At least, for a beat before Mirio asks, "So, have the two of you started a workout schedule yet? Arc?"
"Uh, yeah," Jaune stuttered slightly. "My dad's been monitoring my exercises and my mom's been giving me a nutritional, well-balanced diet for them." He refers to the plate in front of him.
"And look at him now. So much for tall, blonde, and scraggily, huh?" Yang asked.
Jaune blushes. "Heh-heh…"
"Sounds good! What about you, Rose?" Mirio asked.
Ruby paused, her fork-full of pancakes and strawberries midway. "Uh. Well—I—Uh…"
"Zilch," Yang said.
"Nada," Jaune said.
"Nope."
Ruby makes a frustrated noise. "I just don't see why I have to train when I have support gear?"
"Remember what Uncle Toshi said?" Yang asked.
"Yes, Yang, I do. I still don't see the big deal!"
"I remember hearing about a homeroom teacher in UA saying something along the lines of 'no true hero is a one trick pony,'" Mirio said.
"I think I remember Uncle Qrow saying that once…" Ruby said thoughtfully.
"In other words, you're gonna have to rely on your other assets if you want to become a successful hero."
Ruby groans. "Okay, I get it. I need to train. Can't we talk about something else?"
"Sure. It's the new school year, got any new friends I should know about?" Yang asked.
Ruby blinks once. "…Seriously? That's what you want to talk about?"
"Hey, you wanted to change the subject. So, out with it."
"Um…those two that Jaune sometimes hangout?"
"Are you talking about Nora Valkyrie and Lie Ren?" Jaune asked.
"Yeah, them."
"Ruby, the fact that you didn't remember their names says a lot about your 'friendship' with them," Yang said.
"Fine, whatever. Why would I need more friends when I have you guys?" Ruby questioned.
"Mirio and I, plus Amajiki, Hadou, and Blake, are two years ahead of you. You need more friends your age."
"Um, I have Jaune."
"More than that, little sister. No offense, Arc."
"None taken."
"Yeah, well I tried that and met Cardin Winchester. Stupid jerk," Ruby pouted. "So, why try?"
"Ruby, you have more friends around you, you just need to find them," Yang said.
At this point, Ruby is getting frustrated. "Okay, when did we go from, 'I need to train' to 'I need more friends?' I'm perfectly fine with what I have now! And I don't need more friends to help me grow up. I drink milk."
She grabs her glass of milk and drinks a big gulp of it. She nearly slams it back on the table and wipes the milk-stache off her face with a huff. Then, she lets out a cute burp. She blushes when the other three chuckled at her.
Several hours pass and the last bell of the day rang for Aldera Middle School. Izuku walks out of the classroom with one of his notebooks in hand, editing a page of a hero and mumbling to himself. Despite his attention being somewhere else, he was able to maneuver through the hall from experience. Unfortunately, such talent doesn't grant him the ability to see an upcoming shove in the back.
"AH!" the boy exclaimed as he fell forward. The contents in his bag spilled out across the floor. The sight caused an uproar of laughter at Izuku's expense, but none was more booming than Bakugo.
"Whoops. Didn't see you there, Deku!"
The green haired boy moved to his knees numbly, doing his best to ignore the laughing. He goes to work to pick up his things. It was at this moment when one of Bakugo's 'friends' decided to kick his hand harshly. Izuku yelped in pain, grabbing it with his other hand. No doubt that's gonna be another bruise to go with the others, if not a crack. Much to his luck, Bakugo and his group decided to leave, but before giving him hurtful and depreciating comments. He shuddered a sigh.
"Here we go again…"
After he had put back his things into his yellow backpack, he leaves the school, trying to ignore the stares and snickering. And trying not to cry.
As per usual, he treks back home alone. A routine he's done for years, a routine he had become quite accustomed to. Ever since he attended Aldera Middle, he had memorized the many routes between home and school, including shortcuts through alleyways in case the paths are unavailable due to traffic or villain attacks. And today seems to be one of those days.
A huge traffic jam was made due to an earlier villain attack while he was at school. It wasn't a big deal. He'll just use the alternate routes. To his bad luck, it would appear that even the alternate routes were affected by the attack. Even the shortcuts were a no go.
"You've gotta be kidding me," Izuku muttered. "Just my luck…"
To his anxiety, he has to find a new path home. Said path is a long way away from his apartment. He calls his mother, telling her it may take awhile before he could get home. The woman asked if he wanted her to come get him, which he politely declines. The new path makes the trek home just about 30 minutes more than his usual paths. To relief his mother's own anxieties, he promised to text her.
So, Izuku continues with his solitary journey. While he doesn't mind it, it gives him time to think, it's…very lonely. It's been so long, but he remembered how he and Bakugo once walked together. How they once quizzed each other on hero facts, many about All Might. But then, Bakugo gets his Quirk…
…and Izuku didn't.
Lost in his thoughts of times long past, Izuku walks by a dense foliage overgrown over a sign that said 'Sentaku Park.'
And a couple of white rose petals fluttered behind him.
"Huh?" Izuku turns around as a breeze blew through his hair and the leaves in the trees. Somehow, he notices a path that was easily hidden in the thick flora if not for the wind. It was there when he noticed the sign. "Sentaku Park? I think I've heard of this park. I think it's been abandoned for years now. So…" He shouldn't go in there. Who knows what's in there? It's places like this that is usually a meeting place for undesirables. He glances at the path again. The wind blows again, making the leaves and tall grass to move about. Almost beckoning him to enter.
In the end, Izuku's curiosity overpowered his uncertainty. He forces his feet to move forward into the playground. It was…actually beautiful, in a way. And it was very clear that no one had been in this park for a long time. Kudzu vines took over the playground equipment, thankfully not to the point of looking suffocating. Something interesting catches his eyes. A Kiki cat plush backpack with a notebook next to it found a home on top of a plant-free picnic table.
"Someone's here?" Izuku thought. He looks around for the other occupant. "Who?" Judging from the items, it isn't a criminal. At least, he hopes it isn't. As he was distracted, he didn't notice a red blur coming towards him and crash into him. The two tumbles to the ground with Izuku flat on his back.
Izuku winced a little, sore from the sudden impact. "What happened?"
The body laying over him groaned as they lifted themselves off Izuku. "That's what I want to know…" Izuku looks up, seeing a pair of goggles curtained by black/red staring down at him. The person moves the goggles up, revealing shining silver eyes.
It was here, at Sentaku Park, where Izuku Midoriya and Ruby Rose first met.
Chapter 03: An Unforgettable Encounter – Complimentary Colors
