"Normal Speech"

Tangelo Island

Morning came and Ash had woken up early. Politely nudging Pikachu, the Mouse Pokémon awakened and snuck out of the room with his trainer as the other two were asleep.

Ash knew all humans weren't bad, but he wanted some alone time. Right now, Ivy was the only human he felt like he could trust. Seth was slowly working his way on Ash's good side, and Tracey he just met.

Making his way to the beach, he stared at the horizon just as the sun came up. Taking a deep breath, he gained a determined expression on his face. "Well, buddy, time to do some training for the Orange League!"

'You bet! Let's show them what for!' Pikachu added.

"Excited are we?"

Ash and Pikachu jumped as Seth and his two Pokemon had appeared beside them. "Okay, can you stop doing that?" Ash questioned, still startled that the teenager was just that stealthy. Said teenager shrugged, "Can't help it, I'm an early riser too. Plus, my parents have told me how sneaky I can be."

Ash calmed himself, the teenager had noticed the shift in his aura. He clearly still needed to be warmed up to humans again. And he had the perfect idea to help him. "So, you are doing some training for the Orange League?" Seth asked.

"Yep," Ash nodded, "Me and my team are going to take down each gym leader and win the league this time!" he finished with determination.

Seth nodded, "Perhaps I can be of assistance. Plus your Psyduck problem remember?" 'Yeah, take it from a fellow Chu," Seth's Pikachu assured.

Ash mauled the idea over. The beach looked like it had enough witnesses in case things with south. But Seth doesn't look like the kind of trainer to strike another person.

"...okay, I guess you can train with me," Ash allowed. Pikachu was still weary, but allowed this as well.

"There you two are!" Tracey said, out of breath, "you about to some training right? Guess I better let out my teammates for a breath of fresh air."

"The more the merrier, Ash you won't mind right?" Seth asked. Ash seemed on board with it. Witnesses were around and Tracey didn't seem like the person to pull a stunt. So, he allowed the Sketchit to bring out his Pokémon.

"Okay, come on out everyone!" Ash said, sending out Ivysaur, Wartortle, Pidgeotto, Togepi, Psyduck, Mr. Mime, and Lapras. Lapras' appearance shocked all the present Pokemon minus Pikachu. "Guys, this is Lapras. Say hi."

Ivysaur was the first to make a move, extending a vine as a handshake. Lapras happily accepted it and Wartortle was next to greet the Water/Ice Type.

"Your turn!" Seth yelled, sending out his ten Pokémon. Ash recognized a few: Charizard, Gardevoir, Lucario, Braviary, a Vileplume, a Golduck and a blue Ninetales. Seth also had a blue bipedal turtle with a gray beak, chest armor and shell.

"Don't leave me out of this!" Tracey said and revealed his hand. He had Venonat, Marill, Scyther, and a new kind of Pokémon. It resembled a painter from the looks of it with a brush on its tail.

Ash decided to pull up his Pokédex to identify the new Pokémon before.

[Carracosta, the Prototurtle Pokémon. This Pokémon emerges from the water in search of prey despite the fact that it moves more slowly on land.]

[Alolan Ninetales, the Fox Pokémon. A deity resides in the snowy mountains where this Pokémon lives. In ancient times, it was worshiped as that deity's incarnation.]

[Smeargle, the Painter Pokémon. It draws symbols with the fluid that oozes from the tip of its tail. Depending on the symbol, Smeargle fanatics will pay big money for them.]

Ash was shocked at this information. Carracosta looks like an ancestor of Squirtle's line, Ninetales had an Alolan form, and Smeargle seemed like an amazing Pokémon for artists. Shaking his stupor away, he saw Tracey sit down, pull out a sketch pad and begin to draw with his Smeargle. Venonat was hoping around, probably using its radar senses, Marill was swimming in the tide, and Scyther seemed to be sharpening his scythes.

"Alright," Seth began, "Leonardo, summon some rocks." The Prototurtle Pokémon obliged, glowing with a sliver aura before roaring. Several rocks appeared, not like Rock Slide, and Seth continued, "Soar, carry these rocks around the island. This should help with your talons' strength so you can use those moves better." The Valiant Pokémon nodded before carrying the biggest one and flew off.

"Emma, practice your Ice type moves in a nearby tide pool. Nothing too big to disturb the natural Pokémon that live there." The Alolan Ninetales nodded and took off to find a tide pool.

"Leonardo, dive into the sea. Swim about 10 laps around the island." The Unovan fossil Pokémon dove in after his instructions were given.

"Mallard, help Ash's Psyduck. He's having headaches, so practice using Calm Mind." The evolved form nodded and looked at its pre-evolved form intently.

"Paris, your Psychic type moves are doing great. So let's work on your Fairy type attacks at the moment." The Embrace Pokemon warped away after her instructions were given.

"Ignis, spar with some off the left over rocks. Aaron, stealth warm ups." The two Pokémon accepted their task and went to it.

"Rafflesia, practice your Solar Beam. Get it to fire faster without the use of Sunny Day." The Flower Pokémon lumbered her way over and went to work.

"Thor and Eevee, you know what to do." Both Pokemon gave cries of affirmation and went to work, sparring each other.

Ash, as usual, was gobsmacked at the commands Seth had given. He knew what he was doing, working on his Pokémon, and Ash hadn't a clue were to begin!

Pikachu slapped him in the head with his tail, bringing the Ketchum back to reality. "Okay... um... go spar I guess. Except Togepi and Lapras, considering the both of you are still young." His battle ready Pokémon, minus Psyduck, Togepi, and Lapras, nodded and practiced.

Ash got a few meters away before sitting down, trying to figure out what to do now. If he was honest, he hardly trained his Pokémon. The only time he remembered doing that was before the League.

"Need some help?" Asked his "mentor."

"..y-yes." Ash admitted, as much as he hated to right now. He could have done this on his own, but he felt like he knew nothing at this point. He had only recently learned about the new types and other regions recently.

"May I suggest using your Pokédex?" Seth suggested. Ash blinked at that. Of course! The Pokédex was more than just scanning Pokémon and getting information about them. Heck, they were a few times the Pokédex would mention his Pokémon learning a new attack.

Ash pulled the Dex out and scanned Pikachu with it.

[Pikachu, the Mouse Pokémon. Pikachu that can generate powerful electricity have cheek sacs that are extra soft and super stretchy.

Gender: Male

Ability: Static, Lightning Rod (Hidden Ability; Locked)

Moves: Thunderbolt, Agility, Quick Attack, Thunder, Double Edge]

Ash read the information with interest. He thought Pikachu knew Thundershock at some point. What happened to that? And what's an ability?

Seth sensed his confusion. "It seems Pikachu upgraded Thundershock to Thunderbolt. And an ability is a special trait that can give a Pokémon a boost during a battle or sometimes outside. Static paralyzes it's opponent through contact, but it's not always successful. There are also egg moves. Egg moves are certain moves that are passed down from the parents to the baby," the hoodie wearing trainer informed.

Ash mauled the idea over. That would make sense. He then scanned Pidgeotto.

[Pidgeotto, the Bird Pokémon. This Pokémon is full of vitality. It constantly flies around its large territory in search of prey.

Gender: Female

Ability: Keen Eye

Moves: Gust, Quick Attack, Sand Attack, Whirlwind, Wing Attack, Double Edge]

Ketchum whistled at the moves. He had also talked with Pidgeotto once and she felt she was close to evolving, so he wanted to train her before she evolved into Pidgeot. Plus he felt like it was long overdue. Ash moved on to his two most recent evolved Pokémon.

[Ivysaur, the Seed Pokémon. Exposure to sunlight adds to its strength. Sunlight also makes the bud on its back grow larger.

Gender: Male

Abilities: Overgrow, Chlorophyll (Hidden Ability; Locked)

Moves: Razor Leaf, Take Down, Vine Whip, Leech Seed, Solar Beam, Sleep Powder, Grass Pledge]

[Wartortle, the Turtle Pokémon. It cleverly controls its furry ears and tail to maintain its balance while swimming.

Gender: Male

Abilities: Torrent, Rain Dish (Hidden Ability; Locked)

Moves: Water Gun, Skull Bash, Bubble Beam, Withdraw, Bite, Rapid Spin, Water Pledge]

Ash pondered why they had these "hidden" abilities but Pidgeotto didn't. "How come they have hidden abilities, but Pidgeotto doesn't?"

"Well, it's kinda hard to explain. All I know is starter Pokémon and a few select others had access to two, sometimes three abilities," Seth answered.

Ash nodded along, "And these pledge moves?"

"Starter Pokémon can learn them from a tutor, but I'm guessing you did not know that. It seems they learned it on their own. And there is Fire Pledge. Each of the three moves can be combined with the other. Grass and Water Pledge can create a swamp, Fire and Grass Pledge create a sea of fire, and Water and Fire Pledge create a rainbow that helps with secondary effects on some moves," Seth explained.

Ash gathered the information carefully, secretly beaming with pride, and shifted his attention to Mimey.

[Mr. Mime, the Barrier Pokémon. It's known for its top-notch pantomime skills. It protects itself from all sorts of attacks by emitting auras from its fingers to create walls.

Gender: Male

Ability: Soundproof

Moves: Barrier, Light Screen, Double Slap, Psychic, Safeguard]

Ash whistled again at seeing Mimey's moveset. This is his first Psychic type so he was expecting big things. And his mother made him look so easy to use in battle with barriers. Shaking the thoughts of his mom out of his head, he turned to Psyduck, who was training with Seth's Golduck.

[Psyduck, the Duck Pokémon. Psyduck is constantly beset by headaches. If the Pokémon lets its strange power erupt, apparently the pain subsides for a while.

Gender: Male

Ability: Cloud Nine

Moves: Scratch, Tail Whip, Disable, Confusion, Water Gun

Notes: Recommend teaching this Pokémon Calm Mind before further training it]

Ash secretly snickered at Misty's Pokémon, remembering how much he usually disobey her. And this Calm Mind move was what Golduck was teaching him. Maybe that was worth keeping the teenage trainer around. Ash then saw Togepi, he began to wonder and scanned the baby Pokémon.

[Togepi, the Spike Ball Pokémon. It is considered to be a symbol of good luck. Its shell is said to be filled with happiness.

Gender: Male

Ability: Serene Grace

Moves: Metronome, Charm]

Ash was shocked at this. Misty's little incident former baby had some attacks?! He definitely was going to work with him into the point he can battle. And finally, Ash scanned his newest member.

[Lapras, the Transport Pokémon. A smart and kindhearted Pokémon, it glides across the surface of the sea while its beautiful song echoes around it.

Gender: Female

Ability: Water Absorb

Moves: Water Gun, Sing, Ice Beam, Mist]

Ash read up on each of his current party members moves and abilities, before turning to Seth. "Your Pokemon are great health wise, but they need more diverse moves to help with countering their type disadvantages or in a neutral battle. Plus, some of the moves your Pokémon currently have can be upgraded, if you will. Like take Ember for example, it can evolve into Flamethrower. Flamethrower can stay, but other fire type moves such as Fire Blast and Overheat can come from Flamethrower. And it seems like almost my Pokémon can help with a majority of your team right," Seth explained.

Ash pondered this. Maybe... Seth could help him with his training. Ash lended and saw Tracey still sketching with his Smeargle while his other Pokémon were relaxing (or in Scyther's case, training). So maybe they aren't as bad.

"Alright, then let's get started!" Ash said, his determination returning.

Seth gave a smile, time for the mentoring to begin...

Ash's Pikachu slammed his tail to a nearby rock. Each time, he made a small dent while cringing in pain. Thor was doing the same, but taking on a metallic sheen, cleaving into the rock. Ash's eventually turned metal as well, but not perfected.

Pidgeotto avoided an crescent air fueled blade from Soar, before she flapped her wings harder to perform Whirlwind. Pouring more energy in her Whirlwind, it began to send Twister. Which the Bird Pokémon cawed proudly as Soar the Braviary acknowledged her success.

Ivysaur concentrated, mixing up poisons within himself. The Seed Pokémon then fired two streams of poison at a rock, dissolving it a bit. Ivysaur smirked, getting Toxic down as Rafflesia the Vileplume cheered happily.

Leonardo Carracosta fired a boiling blast of water at a rock, before allowing Wartortle to practice. Wartortle fired a Water Gun at first, but after a few more attempts, the Turtle Pokémon fired a more salty form of Water Gun. The Water Kanto starter cheered as his ancestor nodded in approval.

Mimey focused on his psychic energy and fired a zig zag rainbow colored beam at Paris the Gardevior, who responded with multiple orbs of energy. Psybeam and Hidden Power exploded on contact.

Togepi wiggled his fingers before glowing with a sliver aura. He conjured multiple fossil rocks and hurled them at Eevee, the Evolution Pokémon dodged them with grace. He occasionally let the baby get a few shots in, performing following up with a cute expression.

Mallard the Golduck closed his eyes, mediating intently. Psyduck had closed his eyes too, trying to mediate as well. Both Duck Pokémon felt at peace as their mind only pictured a drop of water that was very soothing. And for the first time, Psyduck's head didn't hurt anymore.

Lapras concentrates and fired a trio of blinding lights, Confuse Ray being learned.

Ignis applied heat to the boulder, melting it into magma. Lucario mediated in peace, using his aura to track movement around himself.

Ash's Pikachu brought his hand up on the same rock and brought it down with a white glow, effectively causing a small fissure in the rock. Thor gave a thumbs, Brick Break having been a success.

Pidgeotto flew with Quick Attack to strike her mentor, but failed to nail Soar. They matched attack, Quick Attack to Aerial Ace and Wing Attack to Steel Wing. Pidgeotto worked on her evasion against aerial opponents with this, and eventually learned Agility making her faster.

Ivysaur fired Leech Seed in a fast succession before it began to become faster and fire green seeds instead. Bullet Seed had replaced Leech Seed.

Wartortle fired Brine after Brine in quickly on moving targets provided by Seth. He struggled a bit at first but was able to start improving his accuracy on the moving targets.

Togepi covered himself in a pink light before firing a few flashes of lights at Eevee. The target endured them before shaking it off and asked to be hit again.

The Barrier Pokémon created a multicolor force field, defending himself with a Shadow Ball. He gritted his teeth, straining to keep it together.

Lapras fired an Ice Beam, trying to lessen the recoil with Emma the Alolan Ninetales at her side. The Fox Pokémon was helping her to use the Ice move better. Lapras eventually created a shard of ice and fired it.

Tracey eventually stop his sketching, falling asleep as he did with Smeargle next to him. His other Pokémon eventually joined their trainer, making a pile.

Seth even worked alongside his Pokémon while teaching Ash. The boy began to get something he hadn't had in a few days...

Friends.

After the grueling workout with his Pokémon, Ash landed on the floor exhausted. Since it was his first day of actual training, he agreed he would have to start pacing himself.

Pikachu had worked on Iron Tail, not perfected yet, and Brick Break.

Pidgeotto had learned Agility for her speed and learned Twister in replacement for Whirlwind.

Ivysaur had learned Toxic and Bullet Seed, much to the Kanto Grass Type's pleasure. Maybe evolution wasn't such a bad thing.

Wartortle had learned Brine (still keeping Water Gun at the moment) and gotten better with his accuracy.

Mr. Mime had learned Psybeam and Reflect. Ash liked that idea, he had always been a straight forward battler, physically but perhaps teaching his Pokémon some defensive moves while he's at it.

Togepi, the baby of the group, was making process. Ash figured when he was old enough, he could start battling. Until then, he had learned Ancient Power and started to learn Dazzling Gleam.

Psyduck finally started to have not any headaches thanks to learning Calm Mind (in your face, Misty!), so his training would begin shortly.

Lapras, while young, was training hard to please. Her Ice Beam had improved, Confuse Ray had been learned, and Ice Shard was an accidental learn but was still appreciated (she kept Ice Beam).

Overall, Ash was pleased with the progress his Pokemon made. And it was all thanks to Seth...

Maybe his visions from earlier were beneficially. Maybe he was meant to travel with him.

Ash walked up to a resting Seth. "Hey, um... Seth?"

The light skinned trainer turned to Ketchum, "Yes?"

"I was wondering if you could travel with me?" Ash asked.

"Sure," the teenager answered. In his mind, Seth smiled, Ash was coming around.

"Hey, could I join you?" Tracey asked. Ash thought it over, not sure what to think. "I guess it wouldn't hurt..." Ash said.

"Alright!" Tracey said with a thumbs up.

Ash grew a small smile. Pikachu admitted Seth was great with training him but he still had some wariness towards other humans.

Plus, he could totally spar and beat Seth's Pikachu one day. He wanted to be like him and more.

Ash's Team (on hand): Pikachu, Pidgeotto, Ivysaur, Wartortle, Psyduck, Togepi, Mimey the Mr. Mime, Lapras

Ivy's Corral: Charizard, Muk, Kingler, Tauros Herd (x30), Mew

A/N: In my opinion, Pokemon moves evolve like Pokemon. Some of those moves can stay while using upgraded moves. Like Ember can become Flamethrower, and Flamethrower can stay while learning Overheat and Fire Blast. Tackle can be fully evolved into Giga Impact, but the Pokemon will forget the attacks, Take Down, Double Edge and other moves that involve charging.

Pikachu's Thunderbolt was an upgraded from Thundershock. Wartortle still knows Water Gun while having Brine, but will eventually forget it as it will be upgraded. Pidgeotto learned Twister from her Whirlwind attack. Lapras might have Ice Beam for her remainder of her moveset, unless I decide to give her Aurora Beam.

Also seeing how Ash's Pignite learned Fire Pledge without any tutoring, figured I would give Ivysaur and Wartortle their respective Pledge Moves.
